Battle Of The Baristas

13692598_1056026451113173_1734902563087125335_nThe Dayton Baristas first monthly Thursday Night Throw-Down was held on July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee on Wayne Ave. There was a large & enthusiastic crowd of baristas representing 7 different shops around the Miami Valley & Cincinnati. The evening included friendly coffee competition, food, fun, and Gladgirl Shelly who’s a local DJ that made sure to spin some vinyl.

13735810_1056023844446767_8110516626137342064_oAdam Solomon of Ghostlight Coffee and Shelby Lewis from Boston Stoker made it to the finals of the Latte Art Competition with Solomon coming out on top with his free pour Swan. Judges included Jon Lewis of Deeper Roots Coffee, Dan Clayton of Twisted River Coffee & Warren Taylor president of Snowville Creamery.

Jon Lewis took top honors in the Blind Tasting Contest which featured coffees roasted by Boston Stoker, Telemetry Coffee & Deeper Roots Coffee.

South Park’s Ghostlight Coffee hosted this first of a series of monthly events with support from Boston Stoker, Deeper Roots Coffee, Telemetry Coffee, Snowville Creamery, Cavalier Distributing & Gladgirl Shelly from WSWO Oldies 97.3 fm.

Thursday Night Throwdown-Dayton launches Monthly Barista Competition

latteIf you’re a barista then the Third Thursday of every month is now your day to throwdown and show what you’ve got! Dayton now has it’s own regional barista competition, starting on Thursday, July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee and taking place at a different location on the third Thursday of each following month.

“We have so many talented baristas around the Miami Valley,” Henry Dean, Boston Stoker Coffee Company President said. “Thursday Night Throwdown is a great way for us to show off all of our local talent and also push each other with a little friendly monthly competition.”

The first Thursday Night Throwdown will focus on latte art. For only $2 baristas can enter in and showcase the best of that their steady hands and unbridled imaginations can create.

“Latte art has become very popular so I’m excited to see what Dayton’s baristas can do,” Shane Anderson, Ghostlight Coffee Owner said. “The winner gets all of the collected entry fees but really this is more about getting together and growing a community.”

After July, Thursday Night Throwdown will take place at changing coffeehouses each month to limit any perceived, “home field advantage.”

“I’m excited to host the first one,” Anderson said. “We want to be seen as a relaxed, neighborhood coffeehouse, but there’s also a very artistic side to what we’re doing. I think this is a great chance to revel in that a little more.”

For those interested, Thursday Night Throwdown takes place on the third Thursday of every month. Locations and times vary. The kickoff event takes place on July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee from 6-9pm and is a latte art competition. Entry is $2 and winner takes all.

Sweeten Your Day with a Honey Latte

Ghostlight Coffee on Wayne Avenue has  introduce a new menu of lattes sweetened with local honey: “Café con Miel”
There are five exciting, and exotic Miel lattes…they start with local honey from Twin Creek Apiaries, shots of espresso roasted by Deeper Roots Coffee, mix in spices from Miami Valley Spice Traders and Cocoa from a new Dayton company, Mesocacao.

the Morroccan features a spice blend called “Ras el Hanout.” This blend is considered “Top Shelf” throughout Morrocco and much of North Africa. The blend consists of such spices as Coriander, Star Anise, Cardamom & White Pepper…so there is a little heat, but not too much.the Mumbai includes the Miami Valley Spice Traders take on “Masala” or Indian Spices, often used in Chai (Tea). You will note Cinnamon, Cloves, Anise & Cardamom.

the Mesocacao is pretty straightforward…this is cocoa powder directly from Matagalpa Nicaragua, mixed in with the honey latte. It was processed in Central America and imported directly by an exciting new local small businsess.11234930_881929075189579_1019171520801933575_o

the Beesting has been on our menu before. This is SPICY! Ginger and Cayenne provide the heat, to balance the sweet of the honey. Want it extra hot? Ask your barista to toss in some extra cayenne.

the Miel Básica is a “Basic Honey” Latte…but with locally sourced honey from Twin Creek Apiaries.

They will also have Twin Creek Apiaries Honey available for purchase in jars.

You can also add the local honey to other beverages, that is available upon request with charge.

Their supply is limited and these lattes will only be available as supplies last.

Cold Brew Now On Tap At Ghostlight Coffee

10405543_10152571464673273_5267839714880458696_nThis morning South Park’s Ghostlight Coffee becomes the first Dayton beanery to put  cold-brew coffee on draft. A concept borrowed from the bar rooms, the tap injection of nitrous oxide that gives beer a smoother, creamier feel (as opposed to typical carbonation which adds fizz and bubbles) and apparently it does the same for coffee.

A growing trend, started in Seattle, Ghostlight  owner Shane Anderson shares he’s “the 2nd Ohio location to bring in a kegerator  to offer the  Cold Brew, which comes out like a Guinness.  It’s going to take a little time to get the brew exactly right, but we’re excited to introduce this concept. Down the road I’m looking forward to experimenting with ciders and more.”  In a town that’s welcomed the microbreweries with open arms, coffee from a tap just seems a natural! Just think about it, you can grab a growler of coffee for the morning and then a locally made IPA for an early evening treat.

Dayton Art Institute Announces Leo Bistro Winter Hours

leo-bistro-webFrom November 22, 2013 through January 5, 2014, Leo Bistro welcomed guest purveyor Ghostlight Coffee of South Park on weekday evenings. “Ghostlight at Night” featured exceptional coffees, espresso drinks, locally sourced snacks and speciality cocktails from The Dayton Cocktail Co. Special events included a Repeal Party and a Belgian Ale tasting.

Beginning Wednesday, January 8, Leo Bistro will be open 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, unless special programming is scheduled in the museum. For the most up-to-date information, check The Dayton Art Institute’s website, at www.daytonartinstitute.org/leobistro, or call 937-223-4ART (4278). Leo Bistro will remain open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. on Sundays.

Bottled drinks and a selection of favorite local snacks will be available for purchase at the Guest Services Desk during all hours the museum is open, and a seating area will be available for museum guests just outside The Museum Store or in the General Motors Entrance Rotunda.

The Dayton Art Institute enjoyed hosting Ghostlight Coffee during the 2013Ghostlight Coffee holiday season and encourages everyone to visit Ghostlight’s location on Wayne Avenue. The museum looks forward to welcoming guests to its many exhibitions, social events and educational programs in 2014.

The first of these new events and programs takes place tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8. Warm up your Wednesday night at The DAI, with the debut of the museum’s new “Side By Side” docent program at 6 p.m. Rick Hoffman and Janet Estep will join forces to compare two narrative paintings in the museum’s collection: the Master of Marradi’s Judith and Holofernes and RobertBrackman’s Life About Me. Which painting was likely stripped from another object? Which one speaks to a Ukrainian heritage? Learn the back story with this lively discussion in the museum galleries.

Side By Side gallery talks take place on select Wednesday evenings, and they are free to members and included in the price of general admission for non-members. Meet in the museum rotunda at 6 p.m.

Start the evening or continue the fun afterwards by joining Director of Engagement Jane Black in Leo Bistro for a related pairing. In homage to the Master of Marradi’s Judith and Holofernes – Italian wine and beer, or a fine espresso from our “Dada Java” machine. And as a nod to Robert Brackman’s New York City in the 1950s – an assortment of spiced cocktail nuts. This limited menu will be available from 4 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8.

Ghostlight Coffee Celebrates Second Anniversary With Second Location Announcement

In November of 2011, things changed in South Park.  With the opening of a cozy coffee shop  who focused on high quality, hand crafted beverages and snacks, suddenly  the Dayton community began to flock to this Wayne Avenue location.

shop,” featuring a rotating selection of coffees from many of the best roasters in America, including Deeper Roots Coffee (Cincinnati), MadCap Coffee (Grand Rapids, MI), Handsome Coffee (L.A.), Bows & Arrows Coffee (Victoria, B.C.) and Sightglass Coffee (San Francisco).  Ghostlight was voted  “Best of Dayton – Best Cup of Coffee” in 2012 by the readers of ActiveDayton.com &  Dayton Daily News.
Ghostlight Coffee has become a  popular “community minded” coffeehouse, hosting many AfterHours events such as music and poetry and featuring local artists on it’s walls.  It has gained popularity amongst touring musicians for it’s “listening room” atmosphere, different from most bar venues that these musicians frequently encounter.  It also has become the home of the “Gem City Poetry Stage” and previously hosted the popular “Story Slamm” series until they moved to the larger Dayton Black Box theatre. Just recently they opened a meeting room which doubles as a quiet study space for it’s many university students and professors.  The business will soon expand services to offer coffee & espresso bar catering for events and online ordering of coffees and gift boxes for individual and corporate orders.

 

But with their second anniversary comes another expansion:   Ghostlight at Night in the Dayton Art Institute!

Ghostlight at Night will feature hand-poured, artisan roasted coffees by Ghostlight Coffee and hand-crafted signature cocktails by the Dayton Cocktail Co., as well as a small-plate menu of sharable snacks. Ghostlight at Night hours will be Tuesday – Friday, 3:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., beginning Friday, November 22 and continuing through January 3.

“The holidays are a busy time here at the museum, and this wonderful new partnership with Ghostlight Coffee allows us to offer guests a unique evening experience1470317_392642647533235_1664257405_n in Leo Bistro,” says The DaytonArt Intitute’s Associate Director Jane A. Black. “Ghostlight at Night will complement Elite Catering’s weekday lunch and weekend brunch service at the Bistro.”

  Ghostlight at Night will host several evening events at the Leo Bistro location, including:
      “The Art of Coffee” Tastings Events, including November 22nd…Tasting of the new Panama Geisha coffee, roasted by Deeper Roots Coffee.  The roaster will be on hand to talk about this rare coffee varietal.
      “The Art of the Cocktail” Events, hosted by The Dayton Cocktail Co., including December 5 Repeal Day Party, featuring prohibition era cocktails and punches.
      Live Music at Leo Bistro, including December 6, featuring The Soucek Jazz Trio, a popular ensemble comprised of area music educators frequently performs at the Wayne Ave. coffeehouse to a packed house.

In addition to Ghostlight at Night, Leo Bistro will continue to offer full lunch service, powered bty Elite Catering. A full menu of soups, sandwiches, salads and entrees is available Tuesday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Leo Bistro also offers a weekend brunch menu, servedSaturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon – 5 p.m.

Ghostlight at Night is part of a host of holiday-related events and programs at The Dayton Art Institute. WYSO ReInvention Stories: Shane Anderson

This week on ReInvention Stories we meet Shane Anderson, owner of Ghostlight Coffee on Wayne Avenue in South Park.

Growing up, Anderson was a band kid. In high school, he dreamed of becoming a band director, which, he did. Anderson was a band director and music teacher for fourteen years. Most of that time was spent at Miami East High School and Vandalia-Butler High School. But he had another dream, of one day running a coffee shop. And he wanted to quit teaching before getting too burnt out.

A Musical Journey ‘Unbroken’ With Tim Gebard

The Dayton music scene has people from all walks of life immersed into it.  Go to a show, and you will notice the differences of each and every single person performing.  You have your punk rock bands that wail around the stage, and occasionally throw themselves onto the crowd.  There are the artists and bands that just take the room over, and will not let go till they say that they are done.  You have your dreamers-the people that will not allow anyone to get in the way.  There is also the performer that simply enjoy going on stage and play live, simply just for the thrill on being on stage.  Old and young, no matter the case, there is one thing that each and every artist or band has in common. That is they have love and appreciation for music.

One great example of someone that truly has a love for music is local musician Tim Gebard.  Gebard is currently in the process of working on his newest EP, which is due by April.  His first album, Unbroken Hearts, is available at Omega Music, The Record Gallery, and on his website (www.timgebard.com).

Gebard grew up in Springfield, Ohio and started playing music in his teens.  He grew up listening to the classics – Van Morrison, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.  He worked at a local record store in Dayton in the early 70’s, where he was able to spin some of his favorite music.  It was great experience for him, getting the chance to branch out and find music that would inspire and influence his music playing.  While sitting down at Ghostlight Coffee recently, Gebard told me a story about an experience he had at the record shop.  He went into detail of when Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking tour de force, The Wall, was released.  “We had to play that record from the minute we opened to the minute we closed”, explained Gebard.  “We all got sick of hearing it.  So, one day we got our shipment and I noticed that we got a record of a woman whose vocals were simply amazing.  We put it on, and immediately sold every single copy within an hour.  It was the latest album from Aretha Franklin.”  That speaks to broad musical influences.

While he was always around the music scene, and many friends went on to careers in the music field, Tim’s playing was limited to his solo acoustic efforts. Gebard would continue to write music throughout the years, always continuing to keep the passion for music running around his body and mind.  About five years ago, he joined with some friends in a cover band called Pocket Change, playing for private parties and events.  Internal conflicts proved to be a struggle.  At one point, Gebard would use his work that he had written and fill in the lead role in the singing department.  Ultimately, the band broke up.  But the experience of singing and writing helped propel him to go into the studio.

In October, 2010, Gebard started recording with Dean Vincent at Studio D in New Carlisle.  He would use all the music that he wrote, and have people come in and help with the process.  He had legendary guitarist Junior Smith come in and play on many of the songs.  Violin accompaniment from the ever-talented Sara Kasten and Susan Heeg would bring orchestral influence to some of the songs.  Contributions from the Toles family, local Gospel music legends (especially nephew Doug Toles Jr.), added another influence to his music.  Ron Hartwell, a noted Dayton-area band leader, added dynamic sax and flute tracks.  And the pedal steel guitar playing of virtuoso Wayne Hobbs brought an incredible country influence on several cuts.  And local singer-songwriter Jayne Sachs sang on several songs.  When Gebard spoke of the people that came in to help lay down the tracks, his eyes lightened up, and the humbleness came and stood squarely right in front of him.  “I still can’t believe that I was able to have all this talent come in and play”, Gebard said.  “I loved how the album turned out.  Ultimately, each artist brought a desire to serve the song.”

Unbroken Hearts is an album that simply will not let you define it as one genre, something that Gebard purposely did.  With each song, there are different influences that sprinkle throughout the album.  From country to rock, from soft to fast, Unbroken Hearts guides you all around the dial of music in its purest forms.  ‘Someone To Believe’ presents a lounge room vibe to the song that gives it a jazz feel.  For the Jimmy Buffet fans, ‘Let’s Find Out’ will fulfill those dreams of lying around on the beach, having a drink with an umbrella in the clear glass.  ‘Crazy ‘Bout That Woman’ is a twang upbeat that would give classic country fans a reason to smile.  Hearts is a warm, inviting collection of songs that dives into the joys of being in relationships, and the beauty of being in love.

Unbroken HeartsThe album Unbroken Hearts has seen some remarkable things tied to the album.  ‘Life Time Love’ was the winner of the 8th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards in the Country/Bluegrass category.  ‘Smiles Without Words’ was Honorable Mention in the Instrumental category in the 2011 International Songwriting Competition.  Several songs are under non-exclusive contracts with A&R companies.  (Note: A song from his upcoming EP – “To Licata”, an instrumental inspired by a recent trip to Italy – was recently named an Honorable Mention in the Songdoor 2012 International Songwriting Competition.)

Another great storyline with the album – Gebard’s son, Aaron, plays bass on most of the songs.  “It was really fun being able to have my son play on this album.  He is extremely talented, and it just added to the joy of making this album”, Gebard said.  Aaron has his own band as well: The Mergs, who have been playing locally for the past several years.

When you listen to Gebard talk, you hear the joys of being able to do something that he loves.  While we sat at Ghostlight Coffee, he spoke of the joys of being able to play with all the great musicians around town.  He spoke about wanting to travel to Nashville and getting the chance to show his talent at the famous Bluebird Cafe.  He talked about recent trips he has taken, and becoming influenced by the local music.  It’s always refreshing and a thrill to speak with people like Tim Gebard.  His love for music is all the reason to support the great music that is being performed live in town.

To see for yourself, Gebard will be performing at O’Riley’s Tavern in Brookville, Ohio on February 23rd.  Gebard will have a band performing with him (Jay Madewell on drums, Todd The Fox on guitar and dobro, Steve Makofka on accordion/etc.).  Aaron Gebard will also be playing in his dad’s band and also be playing with his own band.  The Tim Gebard Band/The Mergs show will start around 8pm.

BEST OF VEGAN IN DAYTON

2012 was such a busy year for *
Vegans in Dayton*! I couldn’t have anticipated the amount of good things that came to us this year. We have a lot to celebrate! We saw the opening of Fusian, the rise of Ghostlight Coffee and Thistle Confections (including the opening of the Second Street Market location), and businesses like Three Leee Cupcakery and Sweets by Ashley. Our favorite restaurants continued to excite us, such as the addition af vegan pancakes at Butter Cafe, and menu revisions from Lucky’s, Olive, an Urban Dive, and Sunrise Cafe.

In 2012, we said a sad farewell to Amici’s and their glorious pizza, and wished that Bombshell Bakeshop’s indefinite hiatus would end already! We suffered through intense sugar cravings at coffeehouses, and now have expanded options at Ghostlight Coffeehouse!(Press is slated to have Harvest Moon Creations treats sometime soon, but the date has not been set yet.)

2013 is promising to be a great year, with Linh’s Bistro (opened up Jan 1 and moved from the old location), Shish Wraps (opening sometime soon?), and Harvest Moon Creations working on opening a vegan bakery store-front in Xenia in Spring or Summer 2013! I may also get to weigh in on a new restaurant that may be opening in the Oregon District later this year!

Without any further ado, let’s review the best vegan experiences we had in Dayton in 2012!

Olive, an Urban Dive claimed the prize this year! People love their business ethics, their flair, and their dedication to delicious food. Of particular fanfare is the falafel burger, their weekend scrambled tofu brunch, and their socca-bread pizzas. They also do salads and soups quite well. They balance the art of local, fresh fare with dazzling flavors and exciting vegan protein. I give them major props for all the efforts they go through to serve the vegans in this town, especially as some of the menu items change from season to season. Our hats go off to the chefs and owners who dream up the great dishes that both vegans and non-vegans enjoy! (They also won second place in the Best Vegan Burger / Sandwich!)

This was the closest battle of them all, and I must declare a tie between Thistle Confections and Harvest Moon Creations! Both have a loyal following and have worked hard to ensure excellent ingredients and fresh, lovely baked goods that we feel great eating.

Butter Cafe easily landed this prize, with their always-stocked cases of Harvest Moon Creations cupcakes, twinkies, and cookies. Their hours are convenient, parking is easy, the hosts are super-friendly, and the cupcakes come in the cutest pink boxes!

BEST COFFEEHOUSE FOR DRINKS

I was extremely surprised to see yet another tie! This time, between Press Coffeebar and Ghostlight Coffee. Both have excellent ambiance, fantastic drinks, and are striving to meet vegan needs in 2013. As I love both and visit both regularly, I was actually very happy about this tie. Congrats!

Butter Cafe blew everyone else away! Perhaps it’s the vegan breakfast burrito, or maybe it’s the vegan blueberry pancakes. Maybe it’s because vegan dessert (usually elusive) is just around the corner in a chilled case. I love Butter Cafe, and am very happy to see that they won!

BEST VEGAN BURGER / SANDWICH

Lucky’s landed this prize, probably for their house-made seitan sandwich. Pair that with their sweet potato or shoestring fries,made in their dedicated vegan fryer, or a house salad with vegan ranch, or any number of great sides and apps, as well as the best beer on tap selection in town (my opinion there).  Congrats to Lucky’s for their continual improvement as well as being second place in the Best Overall Restaurant for Vegan Food!

BEST VEGAN FOOD IN AN ASIAN RESTAURANT

thai9-1Thai 9 won this award hands down! Perhaps it’s because of all their vegan curries, or their choice of tofu, mock duck, or mock pork. Their sushi is excellent, and the decor is lovely. Service there is always charming as well. Linh’s came in second place, and I believe they hold a distinction of being the best non-Thai restaurant in town. In years past, I separated these two categories, and will do so in the future.

Taqueria Mixteca won by a longshot yet again! Congrats to a great restaurant! I absolutely love their taco salad and their fajitas
(ask for no cheese or sour cream) and their guacamole.

Perking Up for National Gourmet Coffee Day

messagepart-3Jules Winnifield is not a coffee connoisseur. While hiding a dead body in his friend Jimmie Dimmick’s garage in the groundbreaking 1994 Tarantino movie “Pulp Fiction”, Jules was offered a cup of coffee and was astonished at how good the quality was. “Mmmm! Goddamn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet s***! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster’s Choice right, but he springs this serious GOURMET s*** on us! What flavor is this?” Jimmie, being concerned about the contents of his garage, was not amused. “I don’t need you to tell me how good my coffee is, okay? I’m the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys S***. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it. But you know what’s on my mind right now? It AIN’T the coffee in my kitchen.” His pressing concerns are not our pressing concerns, but one thing may have stuck out: how did he get gourmet coffee in a non-Starbucks cup? We celebrate National Gourmet Coffee Day on January 18 by exploring the evolution of the gourmet coffee scene.

Gourmet coffee in the United States is still relatively young. The first gourmet coffee store was Peet’s Coffee and Tea, started in 1966 by Alfred Peet in Berkely, Ca. He was an immigrant from the Netherlands, and was used to having good coffee available to him. European coffee was rich and crafted, with depth and flavor that Peet did not get out of American coffee. Peet’s set the table for other gourmet coffee shops in the United States. Coffee in America had been in a state of decline since the end of World War II. People had become used to an inferior brand of coffee through rationing. It carried on for a few decades until the 1970’s and the growth of Peet’s and the birth of another giant in the industry, Starbucks. These two companies began their growth as gourmet coffee roasters; it was not until the late 80’s when Howard Schultz bought the company and began to expand from Vancouver to New York.

It was the national growth of Starbucks that created a demand for espresso and other European-style coffees across the country. Gourmet coffee messagepart-6went from something only immigrants enjoyed in their own homes, and possibly some shops in local ethnic neighborhoods, to something everyone wanted. It became a very affordable luxury, and the demand was huge. The espresso machine was originally created to take the gallons of coffee that had to be brewed and reheated for each patron and turn them into individual cups of freshly made coffee. The coffee was delicately roasted and finely ground to make a delicious, dark coffee that would fit in a small cup. The espresso machine had an added benefit; not only did it make water piping hot in a rapid manner; it could also be used to make milk hot. Espresso became the base for a core group of coffee drinks: the café latte (hot milk is added to the espresso in a taller glass), café au lait (foamed or steamed milk poured over a shot of espresso in a shorter glass), the cappuccino (espresso, hot milk, and steamed foam layered on top), and the macchiato (espresso is added to warm milk, the coffee leaving a mark on the milk). The Americano was also created, which is a shot of espresso with hot water, for American soldiers that could not handle the richness of the espresso. These drinks became the base for the First Gourmet Coffee Movement. Looking closely at the menu of most gourmet coffees shops, those drinks are the base for all of the other drinks they created.

messagepart-7Like any good movement, people kept moving forward and discovered something else. Coffee could stand on its own in terms of flavor. It did not need to be something fancy, including multiple flavors and a long list of instructions to make. Coffee could be simple, just water and beans, possibly some cream and sugar. The information age has allowed us to really dig into where the coffee you drink comes from, down to the farmer. People have become fully invested in the whole process, from growing to roasting to brewing to tasting. Experts choose and roast the beans according to where they are from and what flavors they are looking to bring out. They are focusing more on the underlying tastes of coffee, from the berry and citrus flavors that emerge from Ethiopian coffee to chocolaty and sweet coffees from Central America. Classic brewing techniques have become more familiar, with French presses and vacuum pots coming back into vogue for their brewing qualities. Special coffees are selected to be prepared with certain dishes, similar to what you would expect from a wine tasting. Coffee shops and private individuals are conscious of the full range of flavor they can get out of the dark beverage, and the focus is now on the basics, enticing the natural essences of the beans out.

We are very lucky to have so many great coffee shops in Dayton to help us with this process. Winans Fine Chocolates and Coffees has been open since the 1961, serving chocolates with their coffees (which they have been brewing for about fifteen years). Boston Stoker was soon to follow, roasting beans and offering gourmet coffee since the early 70’s. The Ohio Coffee Co. has been doing a brisk trade in the coffee business as well, keeping downtown awake since 2009.  The great places to get coffee downtown continue to open and offer incredibly well crafted coffees and foods. Ghostlight Coffee, Press, and Eclipse have all opened within the last two years, adding some great environments as well as some interesting coffee options.

From its beginning in the mid sixties, gourmet coffee has explored a wide range of meaning to a wide range of people. Some people look at it from a classic standpoint, embracing the espresso and its kin as what is gourmet. Almost as a reaction to the complexity Starbucks injected into upscale coffee, there has been a movement towards just embracing coffee as it is, enjoying the roast, the bean, and the process of enjoying a fine cup. Where can you warm up with this cold weather?  May we suggest a Latte with the ladies?  How about a Mocha with the Mayor? Ghostlight Coffee on 1201 Wayne Ave is just the place for a Food Adventure that will heat up your winter months.  Opened in 2011 by owner Shane Anderson, it is a “must drink” on our list of locally owned spots.  This coffee house already has a cult following, and deservedly so.  Great beverages are the cornerstone of Ghostlight Coffee.  The storefront of glass windows in the dining room, overlooks a bustling Wayne Avenue.   the walls are adorned with local art, and music usually fills the air.  The place has a warmth to it, and we are not just talking about the coffee.   The Big Ragu finds the inviting atmosphere very appealing.   Another attraction is that the menu has a variety of choices to please almost anyone.

Ghostlight uses the “pour over” method to prepare many of their brews.  It is a manual method of making coffee, and a secret to great taste.  The hot water is poured just enough to wet all of the coffee grinds and seeps through a filter into a cup.  The hot water is poured slowly, starting in the middle and moving toward the outside in circles.  Free entertainment with each order!  The “Baristas” (coffee making staff), know what they are doing and the benefit from their expertise is in each flavorful cup.

Being a coffee connoisseur and frequent customer at Ghostlight,  Hungry Jax has a couple of recommendations to beat the cold.  The Fig Vanilla Black Pepper Latte is her favorite.   Black pepper in a latte?  Trust us, it works.  The fig and vanilla flavor makes it one of the better and more unusual lattes that we have tasted.  Every sip is incredible, and at the end you taste the black pepper.  It is one of those drinks that makes you wonder, in a good way.  We also suggest the Balsalmic Walnut Latte.  Again, with this coffee, Ghostlight creates yet another unique, creamy latte, with a nutty finish.  The Big Ragu goes for simple pleasures at Ghostlight like the hot chocolate, or a cappuccino.  The hot chocolate is creamy and rich, and the same goes for the cappuccino.  Other menu offerings include Chai Teas, Espresso, French Press Coffees, and Rishi Organic Teas.

The menu also includes many locally made pastries.  Depending on the week, the selection will vary with seasonal choices or standard favorites.  One of our favorite snacks available are the packaged toffees from Sweet Nothings, a local Dayton confectioner.   Their Sea Salt Toffees are so good and addicting that they should be illegal.

Ghostlight is not only coffee and snack central.   There are many other activities going on in this vivacious venue.   Events include live music, poetry, story slams, and the venue is available for scheduling special private parties.   Ghostlight Coffee is such an eclectic spot with a local flair.  It is a great place to bring friends, or go solo.  The friendly staff and patrons make it a joy to meet and see people from all walks of life, who are enjoying a good cup of coffee.  If you love what life in Dayton has to offer, than Ghostlight Coffee is a wonderful place to “get your drink on.”

Short, Dark, and Strong – National Espresso Day

Europe is a culture always on the move. In the 1600’s, coffee was introduced to Europe, allowing people to stay up longer to get more done. After it was given the blessing of Pope Clement VIII, it spread like wildfire through the continent, allowing people to stay up longer, be sharper, and get even more done. It overtook beer as a breakfast drink in New York by the 1670’s, and just kept getting more and more popular. Things moved really fast for coffee. The only thing that was not moving fast for coffee was how it was made. There were some innovations, like the French press and the vacuum pot, but they could only make small quantities, taking upwards of ten minutes to make two cups. People had factories to build and continents to conquer, so there was a constant search to speed up the process. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century, in the explosion of the Industrial Age, that coffee was put on the fast track.

Luigi Bezzera was one of the many people looking for a better way to get a cup of coffee. He created a machine that used steam power to force hot water at a high rate of speed through the coffee grinds, pulling out all of the best aspects of the coffee and doing it rapidly. It took the five minute long process of making coffee down to thirty seconds and the product tasted delicious. A machine to brew coffee for the masses was created in 1884 by Angelo Moriondo, but each cup was not created for individuals. Bezzera’s made a cup of coffee expressly and quickly for each individual. The patent was eventually bought by Desiderio Pavoni and then the machine mass produced, which helped to spread the popularity of this coffee concentrate, referred to as “espresso” (“fast” or “expressed” in Italian), throughout Italy. Eventually it conquered the European continent and went anywhere Italians travelled to. It was not just the speed at which espresso was made that boosted its popularity in Italy; if you wanted to sit down to drink your coffee, you paid an extra fee. Enjoying your coffee standing up made it a little cheaper, so you wanted to drink it a little faster. The espresso machine has gone through many refinements since it was first created. A piston pump was eventually added to force water through the coffee without depending on the boiler. This removed some of the burnt flavor from the espresso, since the water being forced through the grounds could be done at a cooler temperature. This was eventually replaced by an electric pump, which has created the modern espresso machine.

Espresso has a rich, deep flavor to it, much like you would expect when you compress an eight ounce cup of coffee into two ounces.  The cup of coffee, however, has more caffeine per serving. Espresso does not have a specific roast required, so you can make a dark or light roast coffee into an espresso. The beans are typically ground very fine; since the water is being forced through at a high rate of speed and you want to get the most flavor out of it. Espresso is also the foundation for a whole industry of beverages. American soldiers started to drink it while they were stationed in Europe during World War II, but added hot water to it do dilute the strong flavor, creating the Americano. Cappuccinos and lattes became popular because of the uniqueness of the foam on top of the cappuccino, and the American tradition of adding cream or milk to their coffee. If you want to add a little chocolate flavor to the mix, you can have a Mocha (also the name of the area coffee was rumored to be discovered). Most coffee chains also offer the ability to add espresso to a standard cup of coffee for a little extra kick, a red eye being one shot, and a black eye being two shots. The deep coffee flavor of espresso has also jumped into the world of cocktails as well.

When people think coffee flavor and liquor, Kahlua is what people reach for. It has been the go to coffee flavoring for drinks for decades. As the flavored vodka boom expanded, there were two companies in the early days that created enduring espresso vodkas: Three Olives Triple Shot Espresso and Van Gogh Double and Single Espresso.  Sminoff also has jumped into the mix with their Dark Roasted Espresso vodka, which also steps in with a 100 proof punch. Of course, if you want to make your own espresso vodka, there are simple ways to do that as well (via Bex Huff).

Equipment:

  • Coarse ground espresso beans
  • A 4 cup French Press for making coffee
  • Good vodka (I will always recommend Buckeye)
  • A funnel
  • A glass bottle

Process:

  1. Put a ½ cup of the espresso beans in the press.
  2. Add three cups of vodka to the press.
  3. Allow the mixture to sit for about fifteen minutes.
  4. Press down the plunger to strain out the coffee grounds from the vodka.
  5. Pour into the glass bottle for storage.

Now that you have a good, solid espresso vodka (store bought or homemade), here is the most popular recipe used for espresso vodka, the espresso martini.

1 oz. cold espresso
1.5 oz. vodka
.75 oz. coffee liqueur
.5 oz. white cream de cocoa

Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Shake vigorously, and pour into a chilled martini glass. If you want to make it extra fancy, you can rim the glass with powdered chocolate.

1.5 oz. espresso vodka
1 oz. vanilla vodka or vanilla liqueur (Dr. McGillicuddy makes a fine one.)
1 oz. white cream de cocoa

Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Shake vigorously, and pour into a chilled martini glass. If you want to make it extra fancy, you can rim the glass with powdered chocolate.

Espresso’s richness, versatility, and speed of making it has helped it become a staple to the coffee culture that has developed in the United States. It simmered as a novelty until chains like Starbucks helped it to cover the nation with its deep flavor and versatility. Our culture is not going to be moving any slower in the near future, so our need for a quick pick me will continue for a long time. However, we have found other ways to relax with this densely caffeinated drink. Grab Your Mask for Dayton’s Party of Parties “MASQUERAGE”

As charity fund-raisers go, the AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s Masquerage has earned a reputation as being an over the top, all out bash.  The masked ball was dubbed  Dayton’s Party of Parties by  Ron Rollins of the Dayton Dayton Daily News several years ago and  this themed event has continued to grow.  Started in 2002 by Square One Salon owners Brent Johnson, Doug Henderson and Josh Stucky at Therapy Cafe, the party has grown and moved across town, to such unusual venues like The Merc, The Foundry and it’s latest home- the Roundhouse at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Hundreds of volunteers will spend the week transforming the two story white barn into a fantasy set, under the direction of designer Chris Newman, owner of Cheeky Monkey, an interior design and faux painting company.  Newman volunteered in 2009 to help with one room at the Circus themed event that year, as then stepped up the next year as the creative visionary behind the Heavenly Pleasures and Sinful Delights 2010 Masquerage.   In 2011 the ARC Ohio party celebrated a Decade of Decadence, bringing back some of  the scenery and entertainment of the past 10 years.

Masquerage 2012…Where Evil Can Be Tempting will pay homage to Vixens and Villains.  This theme was chosen to encompass a wide range of costume possibilities- from Gangsters and Molls of the 2o’s and 30’s, to B Movie Vixens, and without a doubt there will be some Disney villains like Cruella De Vil, Ursulas and  Maleficent.  While costumes aren’t required, over the years more and more of the crowd has gotten into the spirit, and  last year about 70% of the crowd were decked out. But the one thing that is required of all party guests is a mask, and whether you choose an elaborate professionally created head, a mardi gras mask or have one painted on, your options are endless.  Make up Artist Kelly Heuss explains “the painted on masks are the most comfortable, as often the plastic ones get pretty hot and sweaty when you’re dancing the night away. ”  You can make an appointment with Kelly  of www.airodynamic.net to get a mask painted on at Square One Salon, the Beauty Box and Mac cosmetics counters are also offering the service.

What makes Masquerage more than just a dance party is the entertainment.  Over the years there have been Aerialists dangling from silk ropes, escape artists, contortionists, dance crews, fire dancers, knife throwers, and more. While ARC Ohio won’t reveal the line up for this year, they promise to continue the tradition of sexy, sultry and super eye catching performers.

And what’s a party without great food.  Chef Matt Hayden of Scratch Catering has created amazing munchies over the years and always has something tasty planned.  Cake Hope & Love will be featuring some sweet treats this year and has even gone a step further by offering to donate a a portion of all proceeds from the sale of their red velvet cupcakes from their Beavercreek store to ARC Ohio.

All  guests will be welcomed with a Jaegermesiter cocktail and Yeungling Beers and Buckeye Vodka are the barsponsors this year.  General admission tickets are $50, which is exactly what it costs ARC Ohio to administer one HIV test.  Testing is provided free to anyone who asks, and the test is a swab of the cheek with results in just 20 minutes.

If you prefer to attend Masquerage as a VIP, splurge for the Red Ribbon Lounge tickets, which include valet parking by Lexus of Dayton, face painting, all of your drinks, appetizers, entry into the 2nd floor lounge and the always coveted Swag Bag for $150.   Tickets can be purchased online  or at Square One Salons, Lexus of Dayton or Ghostlight Coffee. Tickets will be available at the event, but will cost $10 more there. The party starts at 8pm and runs til 1am, but the fun won’t end then, the official Masquerage After Party is hosted by MJ’s Cafe at 119 W. Third Street.

Michael Shoup Kicks Off Tour at Ghostlight Coffee

Dayton native Michael Shoup is calling his first tour of 2012 the Hello Ohio tour, and he’ll kick it off here in Dayton at Ghostlight Coffee in South Park.  Currently-based in Nashville, Shoup’s most recent album is called Learning How to Live, but that’s not all he’s up to.  In 2011 Shoup began a project called A Song For You wherein he wrote 3 songs based on inspiration from fans and then shared them for free.  A Song for You is continuing in 2012, and who knows, maybe he’ll get some inspiration for the project right here in the Miami Valley.  Check out the video below for more on A Song for You.

Shoup performs at Ghostlight Coffee on Friday, January 20th beginning at 8pm.  Presale tickets are available here for $5.  Tickets will be available at the door for $8.

New Almodovar Film at THE NEON!

Hello Everyone,

Special thanks to all of you who came out over the weekend.  This was our best Thanksgiving Weekend ever, and THE DESCENDANTS is certainly a hit!!  (Interesting to note, 2nd place goes to the Thanksgiving weekend we opened AMELIE in 2001…3rd place to our Thanksgiving opening of SIDEWAYS – also Alexander Payne – back in 2004.)

If you haven’t had a chance to see MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, Thursday will be your last chance to see it at THE NEON.  On Friday, we will open the latest film by my favorite filmmaker of all time – Pedro Almodovar.  THE SKIN I LIVE IN is a melodramatic thriller that reveals itself in a brilliant way.  I sat in the front row during its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival – when the film was introduced by its stars Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya.  The film has stuck with me ever since – and I’ve grown to like it even more.  That said, I wish I hadn’t read much about it before seeing it on the big screen.  (Due to that reason, the description below will be relatively vague by comparison to the content of the film.)

Synopsis for THE SKIN I LIVE IN:  “Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed three things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig…” (Sony Classics)   Visit the film’s official website.

As you can tell by now, the Weinstein Co. decided not to open MY WEEK WITH MARILYN in Dayton on December 2.   Right now, we don’t know their intentions for the film in this market.  Though we would certainly love to play the film, it will all be a matter of screen availability when they decide to move forward.

Starting this Saturday, we’ll be hosting The Holiday Family Movie Series…sponsored by The Downtown Dayton Partnership, DP&L and THE NEON.  The movies begin at noon and are free for children 12 and under; other tickets are only $2 each.  On December 3, we will play MIRACLE ON 34th STREET (original 1947 version).  On December 10 – POLAR EXPRESS.  And lastly, on December 17, we will play A CHRISTMAS STORY.  All of these movies will be presented via digital video projection.
