Introduction of a Ohio Proud Craft Beer Act

February 13, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Ohio House Reps. Steve Hambley and Martin Sweeney introduce HB509, the Ohio Proud Craft Beer Act, a bipartisan bill creating a certification for craft beer brewed with Ohio-grown ingredients.  The Ohio Proud Craft Beer Act is supported by the Ohio Craft Brewers Association, the Ohio Hop Growers Guild, the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, the Ohio Corn & Wheat Growers Association and many breweries and barley maltsters across the state.

Ohio Proud is a marketing program that will require an investment from breweries who want to use the designation when they produce a beer with at least 50% Ohio grown ingredients. The program already exists. This just adds craft beer and cider. The Department of Agriculture will have to set criteria for beer and cider if the bill is passed.

The Cherry Mocha is a  rich concoction containing espresso, a “slightly sweet” mocha sauce, candied cherry syrup, and steamed milk. You have an option with all Starbucks’ espresso drinks to have it mixed with the Signature Espresso or the new Blonde Espresso.

And if that’s not enough Valentine’s love for you, the chain has also released a selection of festive treats to go along with the new beverage’s chocolatey-cherry goodness: Confetti Hearts Cake Pops with chocolate cake on the inside, milk chocolate on the outside, and heart-shaped sprinkles on top, and heart-shaped sugar cookies with pink and white frosting and plenty of sprinkles.

Fifth Street Brewpub launches new Logo

February 6, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

This week Fifth Street Brewpub is showing off it’s new brand.

They have adopted a new look with a new logo. After five years they figured it was time to refresh their branding image to remind the community of who they are and what they believe in while also reaching out to new audiences.

Working with Sharpe Creative they developed a logo that helps depict their long-ago adopted motto of “Building a Community, One Beer at a Time.” The logo is comprised of a hand with barley nestled in the palm. From friendly handshakes, to our hand-crafted beer and food, to the many hands that comprise this astoundingly strong co-op, and to the helping hand we lend the community though our charity events, the hand is a symbol of who we are, what we do, and how we connect. And the barley? Well, it is tough to be a brewpub without brewing great beer.

Brewmaster Darren Link turns out beers from the familiar to the unique. He is a master of the craft on his own as well as when partnering with local homebrew winners. Mint Cookie Stout, one of our most well-known beers- is an example of such a partnership with local Jim Witmer. Primarily delicious brews like this are only poured in the brewpub and through limited draft distribution. However, this week they are offering a new brew in bottles. Fifth Date, a stout brewed with lactose, fermented with cherry, and conditioned with chocolate, will be available in bottles beginning 4pm on Thursday, February 8th. 22oz bottles of the 6.5% ABV brew will be for sale in the brewpub and select regional bottle shops. This release makes the beer perfect for getting cozy and sharing the love this Valentine’s Day.

Additionally, to pair with this new beer they’ve crafted a new food menu. In following their brewpub fare tradition, this menu offers, as Chef Molly Parks puts it, “a take on familiar pub food with a comfortable, modern twist.” To be frank, it is simply a collection of food we love to eat while drinking beer. Top sellers such as the Salmon B.E.L.T., Henry Street Chips, Turkey Avo, and our Ohio-raised beef burgers are joined by 24 new menu items. We listened to the community as they shared with us their favorites, their wish for more selection, and their dietary needs. They are doing a soft launch of the menu beginning Tuesday, February 6th and then an official launch on Friday, February 9th.

Started in 2012 by the passion of 32 community members, a once rundown former bar was crafted into a neighborhood brewpub supported by a community of over 3,200 member/ owners. Nestled in St. Anne’s Hill Historic neighborhood among Victorian houses and small businesses, we are a neighborhood pub with a great big heart for giving back while quenching thirsts and filling appetites. . Member or not, their doors are open to all.

Visit the brewpub at  1600 E. Fifth Street Dayton, OH 45403

Hours:
Monday-Thursday 4pm-11pm
Friday 11am-12am
Saturday 10am-12am

February 6, 2018 By Dayton937 46 Comments

The Hamburger Wagon is approaching its 105th anniversary.  Some love them, some don’t. If you have not tried them yet, what are you waiting for ??  **

** NOW IS YOUR CHANCE, COMMENT BELOW and YOU WILL BE ENTERED TO WIN 10 Burgers or 5 Doubles!**

Sherman “Cocky” Porter in the soaked streets from the 1913 Great Flood

HERE’S THE SKINNY on the BEGINNING OF THE HAMBURGER WAGON:

The year was 1913. Daytonians know this as the year of the Great Flood of 1913.   The city was decimated by flood waters and finding fresh food that had not been contaminated was tough.  Miamisburg was no exception as floodwaters from the Great Miami River wreaked havoc in the village.  Miamisburg was virtually under water.  In emergency response, the Red Cross set up tents for displaced residents and workers at the top of the Mound Hill.

One of volunteers, made a decision that day, that would change history in Miamisburg.  His name was Sherman “Cocky” Porter. He knew with the cold weather, people needed a warm food which was easy to produce in mass quantities.   He decided on an old favorite family recipe of hamburgers.  The tasty burgers were a huge hit and grew in popularity across the city.

The Book that put The Hamburger Wagon in the top 100 in the USA”

As the floodwaters receded, the tent city closed and life in Miamisburg returned to normal.  But by then an addiction had been started.  Miamisburg residents loved the little “Porter Burgers” so much that he kept up with the demand and served customers everyday.  After the flood, Sherman Porter kept his hamburger wagon open, selling burgers on Saturdays. They were so popular it soon became a full-time operation and the rest is history.  Fast forward to 2018 – One Hundred and Five Years Later, and not much has changed.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on TODAY‘S HAMBURGER WAGON:

—The wagon you see today is not the original on, it is a refurbished , close replica.

— in 2018 The Hamburger Wagon menu has 5 items:
Hamburger $1.25
Chips $1.25
Can of Pop $1.25
Double Burger $2.50

—The burgers are smashed cooked/flash fried in a deep, iron pan in an inch of oil.  They are topped with a round white  onion slice, a pickle sliced long ways.   The burgers are given a shake of salt and pepper.  The result is a one of a kind taste and a signature crunch.

The Legendary Burger from Hamburger Wagon

— On very busy days, the wagon sells around 1,500 burgers

—Super Secret Hamburer Wagon Meat Recipe:  For over 100 years the recipe has been a guarded and secured in a vault of secrecy.  Rumors abound of a little bit of sausage being in the meat, but Food Adventures cannot confirm or deny this.

—The Hamburger Wagon’s mantra is “We don’t need no stinking condiments, no cheeses or sloppy sauces.”

Six people have owned the Hamburger Wagon over the century, the latest being Dayton native, Jack Sperry.

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THE OWNER, JACK SPERRY:

— In 2008 Jack bought the Hamburger Wagon, and has since launched 2 more mobile wagons for private events, parties

Wagon Owner, Jack Sperry

and festivals.

— Jack is a former All State Football player at Centerville High School for the class of 1980.  He is also an Ohio state graduate.

— Mr. Sperry has 2 daughters and is very involved with Miamisburg happenings.  For example, he is instrumental in organizing the Rock N Green tomato festival each year in Miamisburg.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION:
The Book “Hamburger America” gave The Hamburger Wagon a national shout out in their book.  The book highlights their opinion of the best 150 hamburgers in the USA.

Smashing and splashing – frying up burgers

MUST EATS at the HAMBURGR WAGON:

—THE HAMBURGERS:
You have to try the legend. Take a bite out of the icon with the crisp onion and pickle. Devour the crunchy patty, and take a step back in time. The burger bun also adds to the goodness.

—THE DOUBLE:
The Big Ragu says this is the best thing on the menu. Why? Because the onion can be a little powerful, and the double deadens some of that. Breathe less fire, get the double burger.

The bottom line is that if you are bit of a Food Adventurer, you will have already tried these  or will be trying them soon.  Go for the single and double – tell us which one you like better.

*****WANT TO WIN 10 BURGERS or 5 DOUBLES?  You can have lunch with the Big Ragu and Food Adventure Crew on a bench or get them to go .  TO ENTER THE CONTEST COMMENT BELOW AT THE END OF THE PHOTOS *****

Sing For Your Supper

February 5, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

“Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun”

How many of you sang the above jingle?

On Tuesday, Feb. 6th between  3-7 pm customers who sing the old Big Mac commercial jingle  at one of the 14 participating Scott Family McDonald’s locations in Miami County, Sidney and Huber Heights can choose one of the three Big Mac sandwiches offered at the restaurant for free.

Locations for the contest are in Piqua, Tipp City, Troy and Sidney, as well as the Huber Heights store on Merrily Way.

Fun Facts about the Big Mac:

The Big Mac was created by Jim Delligatti, an early Ray Kroc franchisee, who was operating several restaurants in the Pittsburgh area.  The Big Mac turned 50 years old in 2017.

The Big Mac had two previous names, both of which failed in the marketplace: the Aristocrat, which consumers found difficult to pronounce and understand, and Blue Ribbon Burger.

The third name, Big Mac, was created by Esther Glickstein Rose, a 21-year-old advertising secretary who worked at McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.

The Big Mac has 540 calories and 34 grams of fat.

There are an average of 178 sesame seeds on the bun.

It originally sold for $0.45

The Big Mac is known worldwide and is often used as a symbol of American capitalism. The Economist has used it as a reference point for comparing the cost of living in different countries – the Big Mac Index.

The Big Mac Sauce is delivered to McDonald’s restaurants in sealed canisters designed by Sealright, from which it is meant to be directly dispensed using a special calibrated “sauce gun” that dispenses a specified amount of the sauce for each pull of the trigger. Its design is similar to a caulking gun.

The Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – on a sesame seed bun concept for the jingle was created by Keith Reinhard, Chairman Emeritus of DDB Worldwide, and his creative group at Needham Harper and Steers.

On August 22, 2007, McDonald’s opened the Big Mac Museum in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania to celebrate the Big Mac’s 40th anniversary.

Thanks to

I know nothing about football, or the Super Bowl but snacks? Well, I know a great deal about those. I recently asked my Happy Platers group what snacks they love to munch on at parties to help find healthier options. It seems as though anything you can dip a chip into and those tasty little meatballs are a hit. After anything salty, I need something sweet. And what’s a party without brownies anyway? OTHER HELPFUL TIPS

Let’s face it, sometimes we just want to use the recipe we always have and that’s fine too. Be mindful of high sodium and when an option, choose low salt ingredients. When it comes to sour cream – you can swap with Greek Yogurt to make it light. If you’re going to have chips – choose baked but an even better option for your dips is veggies! And last but not least – always remember one golden rule – everything in moderation. If your Super Bowl Party is your one cheat day, have the snack you want but watch your portions and drink lots of water 😉

Have a happy healthy weekend and I hope whatever team you’re cheering for wins!

That’s all for now.

January 31, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new spot for lunch in downtown Troy,  a ‘pop-up’ lunch spot open M-F with food provided by local restaurants, caterers and food trucks.

Lunch co-owners Karen Boone, Chief Operating Officer with Minesinger Companies, and Jessica Minesinger, Chief Executive Officer with Minesinger Companies, frustrated by the lack of lunch choices in downtown Troy, so they’ve created this space to be a quick-serve eatery, that they will sub-lease to food businesses through out the Miami Valley.

Its grand opening is set for Thursday, Feb. 1, and its staff will be serving meals Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm.

Lunch’s space is also available for rent for a special events, with flexible seating arrangements for up to 32 guests, but can hold up to 49.  You can hire your own caterer, or make your own food, play your own music, and use the  flat screen TV for presentations!  Contact them at 937.875.4633 for more info.
