“The season has officially started. Dayton has the best “Fish Fry Season” around! When you hear “fish fry”, the words “boring” or “dull” may come to mind. Well let me tell you something…Dayton fish fries are nothing of the sort! Traditionally, fish fries were held on Fridays during the season of Lent as we Catholics don’t eat meat on those days. However, with the many Catholic parishes/schools and other organizations out there, and the amazing popularity of fish fries, they have expanded to Fridays outside of Lent as well. At a typical fish fry, you will be able to experience an amazing evening full of fish, chips (fries really), beer, silent auctions, black jack, poker, and much more! Plus, the cost you pay is significantly less than the amount you would spend on a night out on the town…and it supports a good cause! So, regardless of whether you are Catholic or not, definitely make a point to “catch” at least one or more of these great fish fries this season.“

When I worked on the West Side of Dayton 15 years ago there was a place in Drexel, an old-fashioned Root Beer stand that had the best fried Pork Tenderloin. It came on an undersized bun with pickles, onions, and mustard. For a few bucks, this slice of fried breaded pork could keep you satisfied until way past dinner. It was reminiscent of the Fried Tenderloin you could only get at the county fair when I was a kid.

The Bloody Mary is a common “Hair of the dog” drink, reputed to cure hangovers with its combination of a heavy vegetable base (to settle the stomach), salt (to replenish lost electrolytes) and alcohol (to relieve head and body aches). Most medical advice suggests that the alcohol only numbs the discomfort: only rest, water, and electrolyte replacement can cure a hangover. Nonetheless, Bloody Mary enthusiasts enjoy some relief from the numbing effects of the alcohol, and based on the number of local restaurants that are featuring bloody mary bars we know Dayton loves a good bloody mary!

Sometimes the dream of opening a business doesn’t equate to the reality of a retail business. Opened by retired Dayton police officer Bill Parsons and his sister Kellie Tomlinson in June of this year, Parsons faced the realization of the time and energy it takes to run a retail operation.
