X & LOS LOBOS – First-ever National Tour Together

April 29, 2025 By Dayton937

Two legendary bands, one historic tour! X and Los Lobos — pillars of the Los Angeles music scene — are teaming up for their first national tour together to celebrate 99 Years of Rock ‘N Roll. With all original members in both bands still rocking stages after over six decades, this tour marks an extraordinary moment in music history. This highly anticipated tour will bring X and Los Lobos to Huber Heights, OH for a performance at Rose Music Center on Sunday, September 21.

A Legacy Like No Other

These two iconic bands have paved their own paths in the industry—DIY ethics, mainstream success, top ten lists, Grammy wins, world tours, and a steadfast dedication to their craft. Now, they join forces to bring fans a celebration of their unparalleled careers.

“48 years is a long time. 51 years, even longer. But 99 years combined is an insane number for two rock and roll bands and with the same lineup? Unheard of. That’s what we got going this year when Los Lobos team up with our good amigos X for our very first American tour together. Sounds like a celebration and everybody is invited.” – Louis Perez Jr. (Los Lobos)

“This is a dream come true for me. We’re taking the 70’s & 80’s punk roots of LA both East and West all over the country. TOGETHER! 99 years and still going strong. Let’s have a party!” Exene Cervenka (X)

In addition to the tour X have released a brand new video, narrated by Exene, celebrating over 40 years of their iconic rendition of “Wild Thing.”

A limited edition 12” picture disc vinyl including “Wild Thing,” a long-time fan favorite, as well as Exene’s narrated wild history of the song will be available via Fat Possum Records. Pre-order now. The video behind the genesis of X’s “Wild Thing” was directed by James Blagden (the genius behind Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No).

X continues to ride the success of their ninth and final studio album, Smoke & Fiction, released last year via Fat Possum Records. Produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Foo Fighters), the album debuted in the Top 10 on four Billboard charts and has been met with overwhelming praise from both critics and fans. X will perform career-spanning hits along with selections from Smoke & Fiction and their 2020 release, Alphabetland.

Do not miss this first and last tour of its kind. This has never happened before and likely to never happen again. Long live Rock ‘N’ Roll!

ABOUT X

Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in the first wave of LA’s flourishing punk scene; becoming legendary leaders of a punk generation. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978, followed by seven studio albums released from 1980-1993. Over the years, the band has released several critically acclaimed albums, topped the musical charts with regularity and performed their iconic hits on top television shows such as Letterman and American Bandstand. X’s first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift are ranked by Rolling Stone among the top 500 greatest albums of all time.  The band continues to tour with the original line-up fully intact. In 2017, the band celebrated their 40thyear anniversary in music with a Grammy Museum exhibit opening, a Proclamation from the City of Los Angeles and being honored at a Los Angeles Dodgers game where Exene threw out the first pitch and John Doe sang the National Anthem. In 2019 X reissued and remastered their first four classic albums via their collaboration with Fat Possum Records; Los Angeles (1980), Wild Gift (1981), Under The Big Black Sun (1982) and More Fun In The New World (1983). In 2020, X celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Los Angeles and celebrated with a surprise release of Alphabetland, their first new studio album, featuring the original line-up, in 35 years.  In August of 2024 X released their ninth and final album, Smoke & Fiction.

ABOUT LOS LOBOS

For over 50 years, Los Lobos have defied musical boundaries, blending rock, blues, Tex-Mex, country, R&B, and traditional Latin sounds into a style uniquely their own. Rising from East Los Angeles in the ‘70s, the band gained widespread acclaim with their Grammy-winning cover of “La Bamba” and have since built an enduring legacy with multiple awards, hit albums, and a reputation as one of the most dynamic live acts in music. With all original members still at the helm, Los Lobos continue to push the limits of their sound while staying true to their Chicano roots.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10AM on Friday, May 2 at Ticketmaster.com and the Rose Music Center Box Office.

Dayton at Work and Play: Richard Lundin

April 28, 2025 By Bill Franz

Conversation with Richard Lundin at Front Street (1001 East 2nd).
I know you came here from Chicago about 10 years ago. What brought you?
“One of the owners was getting ready to retire and I said I’d take a look at the place and give them my thoughts. I thought it would take me a few months, but 10 years later I’m still here. I became a part owner in 2020.”
“The three buildings here were built in the late 1800’s. There was a paper mill here once, with equipment powered by a canal that ran right by the place. Then it was the home of an envelope company. When they moved in 1965 the current ownership group bought the buildings and started renting space to entrepreneurs of all kinds.”
“There were a few artists who rented space back in 1965 – artists are always looking for inexpensive studio space – but it was mostly businesses. Over time the number of artists has grown. Now about 150 artists rent about 75% of the space. I think they see a benefit to being part of the community of artists here
I’ve always loved photographing here because I love taking pictures of people at work. At Front Street I’ve photographed boat builders, jewelry makers, glass blowers, painters, and many other kinds of workers. “I enjoy that too. I love to see people who are really good at the thing they do, and we have a lot of really talented people here.”

I’ve never seen a landlord get so involved in the success of his tenants. “We do what we can to support the artists here. We run a monthly party where everyone opens their studios and lots of people come. It’s the first Friday of the month and the following Saturday. And lots of people visit at other times, too. Our doors are open from 7am to 7pm and if you walk around the buildings during those hours you’ll always find some studios open and some artists who are happy to talk to you.”
“We’re doing something special here May 2 and May 3. It’s called ARTebration. We’ll have street artists from all over the country painting new murals on the walls at Front Street; plus there’s music and food and all of our art studios will be open.”

BBB-Dayton’s Community Honor Goes To Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton

April 28, 2025 By Dayton937

The Better Business Bureau is pleased to announce the recipient of BBB’s 15th annual Community Honor Award. This year, Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton will receive the distinguished honor.

The Community Honor Award was established in 2011 to recognize government, nonprofit or education organizations with proven commitment to improving all aspects of life in the Miami Valley. It spotlights the honorees’ efforts to realize not only their own missions, but their roles in making the Miami Valley a thriving community, taking care of its citizens – individuals and organizations. The honorees enhance the Miami Valley marketplace by offering their own tangible and intangible resources, making a positive impact on the evolution of the Miami Valley and the betterment of its people and industries. They demonstrate a passion for and progress towards improving the quality of life. This honor is reserved for organizations, which have shown stamina, steadfast determination and truly innovative ways of giving back to the community.

Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton builds new homes and renovates existing ones to provide the opportunity for low-to-moderate income families to purchase them with zero interest mortgages. It services each mortgage, allowing the organization to work with every homeowner to ensure the mortgage is successfully paid in full, resulting in transformational financial security. It even provides homeowner education classes to all partner families to prepare them for homeownership and provides critical home repair services to income-qualified homeowners who don’t have the financial resources for major repairs or upkeep. In addition, Habitat also runs two retail stores, selling donated household goods, cabinets, appliances, construction materials and hardware to the public. Funds generated in the stores offset operational costs. The organization has also expanded to serve Greene and Clark counties.

Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton has grown from a volunteer mission working from a church basement to what it is today with one simple belief — everyone deserves a decent place to live. In total, the organization has served over 1000 families locally, providing safe, decent, affordable homes.

With the current affordable housing crisis, Habitat operates with five core principles: demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ; focus on shelter; advocate for affordable housing; promote dignity and hope; support sustainable and transformational development. These principles guide everything the organization does. Its success hinges on the 4000 volunteers that come out each year to help build, renovate, and repair homes.

Norman Miozzi, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton executive director, says, “We’re so excited that the BBB selected Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton as the 2025 Community Honor recipient. Since 1983, Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton has served the Miami Valley with integrity; providing, preserving and protecting affordable home ownership. Receiving the Community Honor recognizes not just the hard work and dedication of our employees and board members, it also recognizes the work of thousands of volunteers, corporate partners and homeowners who have been the heart of Habitat For Humanity Of Greater Dayton for 42 years.”

John North, president and CEO of the BBB serving Dayton and the Miami Valley, shares, “The selection committee was impressed with this organization’s laser focus on serving the Miami Valley. They are a true example of how strong communities thrive when committed organizations get involved. Its efforts are unbelievable and it’s our honor to recognize them.”

The public is invited to join us at the Torch Awards For Ethics Dinner on May 13 at Sinclair Community College’s Great Hall to applaud this organization. You can reserve a table for $999 or reserve individual tickets for $99 per person. To make your reservations, call (937) 610-2277.

“Get ready to shake things up with the new flavors of Frank’s Dip’n, Squeeze, and Wings Sauces,” said Valda Coryat, North America Vice President of Marketing at McCormick & Company, Inc. “Consumers can dip and drizzle these flavorful sauces on their favorite foods – turning every meal into a tasty adventure. Each sauce offers accessible heat, inviting fans to experiment with a wide range of trending, consumer-preferred flavor combinations, such as “swicy” and easy, global-inspired flavors for anyone to explore and enjoy.”

NEW Frank’s RedHot Squeeze Sauces

Squeeze Sauces are thicker than traditional hot sauce and provide an ultra-smooth drizzle as a topping for favorite foods.

  • Frank’s RedHot Burger Squeeze Sauce: This creamy, tangy burger sauce blends spicy Frank’s RedHot flavor with dill pickle juice and mayo to add a pop of mild heat to make it the ultimate burger sauce — not just burgers, but also for fries, pizza, and chicken sandwiches.
  • Frank’s RedHot Korean BBQ Squeeze Sauce: This blend of soy sauce, garlic, and a touch of Frank’s RedHot delivers a burst of savory, medium heat to salmon, noodles, rice and more.

NEW Frank’s RedHot Dip’n Sauces

Dip’n Sauces are perfect for dipping ready-to-eat foods with their thick and creamy texture.

  • Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Ranch Dip’n Sauce: Thicker than regular hot sauce, this creamy dip delivers the perfect balance of Ranch flavor and Frank’s RedHot heat exactly where you need it – think chicken fingers, fries, crudités, and more
  • Frank’s Redhot Golden Dip’n Sauce: Sweet and tangy with a kick of cayenne heat, this thick sauce dip makes it easy to treat pizza, sandwiches, and more, to the heat you crave. Simply flip the cap, squeeze, and dunk, dip, or spread onto favorite foods.

  • Frank’s RedHot Secret Chicken Dip’n Sauce: Dip favorite foods like chicken fingers, fries, and more into this creamy sauce featuring a tangy, smoky flavor. Thicker than regular hot sauce, this clingy condiment delivers medium heat and a craveable taste to whatever is on the plate.

  • Frank’s Redhot Sweet ‘n Sour Dip’n Sauce: This sweet and sour flavor is perfect for chicken fingers, egg rolls, and other favorites. Thicker than regular hot sauce, and clingy for major dip-ability, this craveable flavor offers a medium heat.

  • Frank’s Redhot Roasted Garlic Dip’n Sauce: Throw a punch of garlic and spicy cayenne heat to tots, onion rings, pizza, and more with this thick, creamy dipping sauce. An inverted bottle makes it easy to get heat wherever, whenever you want it.

    .

NEW Frank’s RedHot Wings Sauces

Wing Sauces are perfect for elevating favorite foods; just toss or dip for an instant flavor boost.

  • Frank’s RedHot General Tso Wings Sauce: A delicious blend of soy sauce, aged cayenne peppers and vinegar paired with just the right amount of sweetness. Ready to use straight from the bottle, this craveable flavor delivers mild heat to stir-fry, chicken wings, shrimp, and more.
  • Frank’s RedHot Mango Habanero Wings Sauce: Sweet mango and fiery habanero unite in a sauce that is ready to bring the perfect balance of fruity, sweet heat to chicken wings, sandwiches, tacos, and fries.

Shaquille O’Neal Tips Off Big Chicken’s “Inside The Sandwich Wars”

April 23, 2025 By Dayton937

Big Chicken, the concept created by basketball legend and serial entrepreneur, Shaquille O’Neal, fusing his home-cooked childhood favorites with today’s trending flavors, is officially raising the stakes with the launch of its first-ever “Inside The Sandwich Wars” (“Sandwich Wars.”)

Ultimate fans are invited to try four BIG sandwiches, each created in collaboration with former athletes and current sports personalities: Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and O’Neal.
Ultimate fans are invited to try four BIG sandwiches, each created in collaboration with former athletes and current sports personalities: Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and O’Neal.

The limited-time promotion tips off during Playoff season on April 23 and plays through June 30. Ultimate fans are invited to try four BIG sandwiches, each created in collaboration with former athletes and current sports personalities: Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and O’Neal.

Throughout the Sandwich Wars, guests will be able to cast their votes for the champion. The sandwich legend with the highest number of purchases and guest love across the U.S. will receive a $25,000 donation to the winner’s charity of choice.

“This one’s personal. These are my friends, my colleagues and now, my competition. We’re going head-to-head in the ultimate “‘sandwich playoffs,'” all for our fans and a great cause,” said O’Neal.

Each sandwich in the lineup reflects Big Chicken’s bold approach to BIG flavor and BIG personality, driven by menu innovation – combining crispy, juicy chicken with home-cooked favorites and craveworthy add-ons that highlight each personality’s taste.

The court’s heating up with this all-star roster:

  • Kenny The Jet: Some serious bounce. Crispy chicken brings the power, while fried pickles and jalapeño slaw add the crunch and kick. Pepper jack brings the heat, and Carolina BBQ sauce ties it all together. A Southern-style standout with game-winning flavor.
  • Shaq Attack: BIG flavor, BIG fun, BIG smiles. Starring crispy chicken, melty pepper jack cheese, fiery jalapeño slaw and chipotle BBQ – all stacked on a toasted bun. It is the MVP of Big Chicken, straight from the big man himself.
  • Sir Charles: Brings the heat from tip-off to buzzer. Crispy chicken at center, Mac & Cheese at power forward, bacon and crispy onions on the wings, with chipotle BBQ and Big Chicken sauce calling the plays, on a toasted bun built for an all-star.
  • The Ernie: All crunch, no benchwarmers. Crispy chicken brings the muscle, backed by smoky bacon, cheddar cheese curds and a pile-on of onion tanglers. Chipotle BBQ and mayo run the playbook, stacked high on a toasted bun. A bold bite built for the highlight reels.

“The Sandwich Wars are a reflection of what Big Chicken stands for,” said Josh Halpern, CEO of Big Chicken and Chief Business Officer of Craveworthy Brands. “We’re a brand built on bold flavor, true hospitality and connecting with the community in meaningful ways. This offer brings all of that to life, with our fans playing the most important role in deciding who takes home the title.”

“I created Big Chicken because I always believed comfort food brings people together, and this lineup takes that to another level. Big flavor, big competition and even bigger impact. Now, that’s what I call a triple double. It’s game time,” added O’Neal.

7 Beautiful Hikes in Miami County

April 23, 2025 By Guest Contributor

It’s no secret- Miami County has plenty to offer. One of the most treasured – and preserved – activities is exploring the beauty of nature.

Whether you are on the hiking trail, taking an easy stroll, or searching for something to really get your blood pumping – you can find it along our trails in Miami County.

Lace-up your hiking boots, grab your gear and get ready to check out these local trails.

Charleston Falls Preserve

As one of the most visited parks in Miami County, the Charleston Falls Preserve has more than 216 acres of prairie and forests. It’s an ideal place to hike, take in the sights, and enjoy all that nature has to offer. The park offers a variety of hiking inclines, perfect for all skill levels.

One of the most beautiful sights along this trail in Miami County is the “Miniature Niagara”, sharing the same rock strata as its namesake, Niagara Falls. From a small underground spring, the waterfall scales about 37 feet tall, then continues down to the Great Miami River.

Other areas to explore include the Thorny Badlands and Redbud Valley filled with beautiful colors and views of nature.

If you enjoy spotting unique wildlife, you’ll appreciate the opportunities that the Charleston Falls Preserve provides.

Great Miami River Recreational Trail

If you’re looking for a full-day, long trail experience, the Great Miami River Recreational Trail has 32 miles of paved trail for biking, running, and walking.

The Great Miami River Recreational Trail is part of the Great Miami Riverway, which is considered to be the nation’s largest paved trail network at 99 miles in length. This trail network connects communities up and down the river – and in the surrounding area – to facilitate connections between local events and attractions.

This trail takes explorers over small bridges, underneath state highways, along the river, and passes by a gorgeous golf course.

Check out a trail map, and plan your adventure!

Garbry Big Woods Reserve

For a beautiful little hike through a rustic area, you can enjoy the 2.2 miles of trails in the Garbry Big Woods Reserve in Piqua. It’s ideal for those who crave adventure but may have little ones in tow.

Even as a shorter trail, Garbry Big Woods still has a lot to offer. Take the family and explore more than 170 acres of land. It’s a great place to gather with friends and family, archery, fishing, and hiking. The mowed areas around the picnic shelters are great for taking a break for lunch. The shelters can also be reserved for parties and group gatherings.

The educational arboretum offers the opportunity to learn about Ohio’s native trees, as you learn to identify them by bud, leaf, or bark.

With their newfound knowledge, take the kids on a science adventure and see how many types of trees they can identify on their own. They will never know it was educational!

An interesting fact: the restroom facility is one of the first of its kind in Ohio to utilize the natural wetlands as a sanitary filtration system.

Hobart Urban Nature Preserve

If you’re looking for a hiking trail that allows you to explore the intersection of nature and art, try out the Hobart Urban Nature Preserve in Troy.

The trail on this preserve features a variety of welded sculptures, placed in specific habitats to illuminate the connection between nature and art.

The two miles on this trail make for an easy hike, but you’ll experience beautiful water views, plenty of flowers in the warmer weather, and various types of birds to spot along the way.

John A. Wannemacher Nature Reserve

You can take a hike through reclaimed agricultural land in this nature reserve in Troy, which features nearly two miles of trails and more than 100 acres of land.

If you are interested in viewing a variety of birds, be sure to bring your binoculars!

When you hike through this land, know that you’re walking through an area that has had a positive effect on local water quality as it reduces storm runoff, which helps to maintain water purity.

Maple Ridge Reserve

In Covington, you’ll find the Maple Ridge Reserve, which is located along the unique natural features of the Stillwater River.

This trail features 2.5 miles of peaceful, easy hiking through terrain that includes a sugar maple grove and a sugar camp. The large collection of mature maple trees provides sap for the on-site, educational maple sugaring operation.

The trees on this reserve provide an opportunity to view gorgeous foliage as the seasons change from the delicate leaves of spring to the bold colors of late autumn.

Enjoy a refreshing walk through the woods, watch wildlife, or fish in one of three ponds located in the park.

Stillwater Prairie Reserve

The Stillwater Prairie Reserve features approximately three miles of trail in a circular loop that winds around a variety of habitats. It is a great place to enjoy hiking – and even cross-country skiing.

Enjoy the local sights of marshy habitats, shrublands, fields, and woodlands. The area features a boardwalk, rowboats to explore the man-made ponds, and picnic areas to relax and refuel.

The Stillwater Prairie Reserve is the perfect destination for a day-hike along with a group of family or friends, or possibly solo for some quiet contemplation.

Miami County is proud of the gorgeous natural scenery that highlights the beauty and serenity of our area. Try out each hiking trail throughout the year, enjoying the distinct seasonal changes that bring a variety of sights to behold.

After your adventures, stop by a local brewery or restaurant to end the adventure! Contact the Miami County Visitors and Convention Bureau for more information about our area.

Dark Star Orchestra brings its critically-acclaimed Grateful Dead live experience to The Rose

April 22, 2025 By Dayton937

Dark Star Orchestra will bring its critically-acclaimed live, Grateful Dead tribute performance to Rose Music Center at The Heights on Saturday, August 9.

Performing to critical acclaim for over 25 years and over 3,100 shows, Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead live concert experience. Their shows are built off the Dead’s extensive catalog and the talent of these seven fine musicians. On any given night, the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. This allows fans both young and old to share the experience. By recreating set lists from the past, and by developing their own sets of Dead songs, Dark Star Orchestra offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon. Honoring both the band and the fans, Dark Star Orchestra’s members seek out the unique style and sound of each era while simultaneously offering their own informed improvisations.

Dark Star Orchestra offers much more than the sound of the Grateful Dead, they truly encapsulate the energy and the experience. It’s about a sense of familiarity. It’s about a feeling that grabs listeners and takes over. It’s about that contagious energy…in short, it’s about the complete experience and consistent quality show that the fan receives when attending a Dark Star Orchestra show.

Dark Star Orchestra has performed throughout the entire United States, including a sold-out debut at Colorado’s Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater, plus shows in Europe and the Caribbean with the band touching down in seven different countries. DSO continues to grow its fan base by playing at larger venues for two and even three-night stands, as well as performing at major music festivals including Bonnaroo, Milwaukee’s SummerFest, The Peach Music Festival, Jam Cruise, Wanee Festival, SweetWater 420 Festival, Mountain Jam, and many more.

In addition to appearing at some of the nation’s top festival, Dark Star Orchestra hosts its own annual music festival and campaign gathering, titled the “Dark Star Jubilee”, currently in its eighth year where DSO headline all three nights and are joined by a mix of established and up and coming national touring acts. Beyond the shores of the United States, DSO has taken its internationally-acclaimed Grateful Dead tribute to the beaches of Jamaica in the dead of winter for the past six years, with their event appropriately titled ‘Jam in the Sand’. Featuring an ocean-side stage, DSO sets up camp to perform shows for four nights along the tropical sands of an all-inclusive resort, selling out the event each year for hundreds of lucky attendees.

Fans and critics haven’t been the only people caught up in the spirit of a Dark Star show. The band has featured guest performances from six original Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, Vince Welnick, Tom Constanten and even toured with longtime Dead soundman, Dan Healy. Other notable guests have included Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish, Keller Williams, Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock, Peter Rowan, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and many more.

“For us it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years,” keyboardist and vocalist Rob Barraco explains. “We offer a sort of a historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985, 1978 or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the 90s, we offer something they never got to see live.”

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10AM on Friday, April 25 at Ticketmaster.com and the Rose Music Center Box Office.

Whispers in the Breeze Photo Exhibit at Rosewood Arts Center

April 21, 2025 By Dayton937

Rosewood Arts Center, Kettering Health Art Gallery announces the opening of Yiyun Chen X Fremaux-Valdez Solo Exhibition on April 21st.  It will run through May 24th. Yiyun Chen’s photographic project, Whispers in the Breeze, began as a pastime and was prompted by the artist’s wandering as a pedestrian along Lake Erie. The project became a ritual, and then a process of self-reflection and self-discovery for the artist as an Asian immigrant – exploring the relationship between people, environment and society.

The collaborative work of partners Ghislaine and Lando Fremaux-Valdez is on a gargantuan scale, executed in gouache and pastel on paper. Each drawing naturalistically portrays one or both of the artists’ bodies (sometimes many times over), but deranges them through fragmentation, anatomical corruption, and/or pictorial chaos

Closing Reception and Artist Talks: May 24, 2025, 1 – 3 p.m.
