Dayton Ballet & DCDC Volunteers Duel Behind the Bar!

Dayton is renowned for it’s incredible legacy in the history of American dance. In 1927, The Schwarz School of Dance (now Dayton Ballet School) was opened in Dayton, by the gifted Schwarz sisters, who returned home after performing professionally around the world. Ten years later, the sisters created “The Experimental Group for Young Dancers,” and staged a performance at the Dayton Art Institute. This was the first performance of what is now the Dayton Ballet, the second oldest regional ballet company in the US.
The Schwarz sisters instructed another pioneer of dance, Jeraldyne Blunden. In 1968, Jeraldyen went on to create her own school, Jeraldyne’s School of Dance. A few years later, she established the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the first modern dance company in Ohio. The company regularly performs in Dayton, and around the world, including an upcoming trip to Russia and Kazakhstan next May as part of Dance Motion USA, a cultural diplomacy program organized by the U.S. Department of State and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

These incredible achievements and milestones are being celebrated with style over the next year or two. The Dayton Ballet celebrates it’s 80th Season, and next year DCDC hits their 50th Birthday! Volunteers from the Dayton Ballet Barre and DCDC Ambassadors are joining forces Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 at Brixx Ice Company to kickoff these spectacular seasons! They’ll be slinging drinks as dueling bartenders, and might even have a dance off or two!
Enjoy commradere, drink specials, and a fun way to support these historic arts organizations. Best of all – there will be random ticket giveaways for the exciting up-coming seasons! There will also be ticket discounts available to anyone interested. Tickets to these outstanding artistic events are perfect for date nights, girls nights, and gifts!

Sixth Annual Brew-Ha-Ha: West V. Midwest
Dayton is in the midst of a craft beer explosion. There are daily notifications that new breweries are opening or that current breweries are planning to expand. In Montgomery county alone, there are well over a dozen breweries. From Crooked Handle in the south to Hairless Hare in the north, breweries are popping up all over. However, the fuse for the craft beer movement was lit on the West Coast. Anchor Brewing Company was bought by Fritz Maytag in 1965, just as the brewery was going to sink quietly in a sea of macrobrews. He resurrected the brand, inspiring other west coast beer enthusiasts to take their home brews and start offering them to the public. It has now been fifty years, and the west coast still rules the roost when people look at raft beers. As of 2014, roughly one of every four breweries were located in California, Oregon, and Washington. It would take all the breweries in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio to make a comparable amount. That is a lot of breweries. A wide variety of beer. The Montessori School of Dayton thinks that the Midwest has come a long way in the craft beer game, and is ready to put breweries head to head at the 6th Annual Dayton Brew-Ha-Ha on January 28th from 6 to 9 PM.

We all know the Midwest is best. Time to prove it!
Most years have had a theme focusing on the flavors of the Midwest. Kevin J. Gray, curator of the beers and co-chairman, laid out the format: “We thought it was time to go head to head with the giants—to pick a bunch of really interesting beers from the Left Coast and pit them against the best that Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and the other Midwestern states had to offer.” In a Montessori school, the environment is important. They want students that are “eager for knowledge, who will initiate learning in a supportive, stimulating, and thoughtfully prepared learning environment.” Mr. Gray asserts that they will be creating an environment that is welcoming to everyone, from those just dipping their taste buds into craft beer to those who have explored every style and flavor profile. There will be Beer Ambassadors there to answer questions and direct you to the beers best suited for your tastes. For the home brewers looking to do a little research, members of DRAFT will be there to answer any questions you may have.
Three hours is a long time to be sampling beer. Fortunately, there will be some other events at Brew-Ha-Ha. Chicago’s Gyros And Dogs will be offering hot dogs, gyros, pita sandwiches, and other delights to compliment the beer. There is an online silent auction running now through the end of the event, where you can pick up some fantastic gifts and help support the school. Some items listed are from Proto Build Bar, Day Yoga Studio, Sherwood Florist, Dayton Funny Bone, and more! This festival has been growing every year, bringing beer lovers together from all over the Miami Valley and educating them about the amazing craft beer options in the region.

Eat, drink, and support the Montessori School of Dayton!
This year, they are working hard to expand that knowledge to the fine breweries on the Pacific coast.
Tickets for the event are on sale right now! General Admission is going to be $40, with a limited amount of VIP tickets costing $50. That extra $10 get you in to the event at 5 PM, giving you one more hour to sample the beers they are providing. Proceeds from the event will go to the school’s improvement fund. The funds from this year’s event will be going to help install an energy efficient roof on the school.
While the west coast has created some iconic beers, the Midwest has crafted beers that can stand up to anything that is being brewed there. On January 28, the Montessori School of Dayton hopes you join them in deciding where the best beer in the country is brewed.
Donut Haus Hosts Fundraiser for Kettering Family Who Lost Their Son
All of us have heard about the senseless, tragic killing of the Kettering Fairmont 16 year old last weekend. Ronnie Bowers was the young man that lost his life with a gun shot to his head over the weekend.
Mike Hemmert, owner of Springboro’s Donut Haus Bakery, just announced on his facebook page, a plan to help the family deal with some of the costs they’ve incurred due to this tragedy.
“The Donut Haus is a long time supporter of the Springboro School District. When I heard last night that Ryan Combs (who works at the high school) is the stepfather of the young man that was tragically killed, I wanted to help. There is also a second connection, as Ryan’s Mom (Julie Marconi Combs) is a long time School Bus Driver for our School System as well. My daughter has been teaching for 8 years in an area School District and I know first hand the sacrifices they make,” says Hemmert.
On Saturday, Sept. 10 from 6 AM-NOON they will donate $1.00 for every dozen donuts they sell along with 50 cents for every cup of coffee. They expect to make a nice donation to try and help this family with the support f their loyal customers.
The days ahead will be very hard for this family as they plan the funeral. A Go Fund Me campaign set up for the family when Ronnie was on life support has already raised over $10,000. According to his Aunt Shannon, “Ronnie has made the lives of several people possible through the donation of his organs. His heart will beat on, his eyes will still shine, and laughter will still be heard through the air in his lungs. My family’s tragedy is another family’s miracle. I wish there was a way to take away the pain.”

Rooted in Love Benefit at Trolley Stop
Rooted in Love is an all ages benefit concert aimed at raising funds to help a local family offset the mounting financial challenges that come with the devastating news that a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Last year was very challenging for Aaron & Lisa Spoores. Having one child begin high school, while balancing the obstacles of Autism with the other, and then downsizing from two incomes to one, was extremely difficult. Then came the cancer diagnosis. The 6 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy, a year of astronomically expensive IV immunotherapy, and other required treatments.
The crushing physical, emotional, and financial toll caused by cancer can seem insurmountable to even the strongest among us. This is a disease that has touched all of us in someway or another and requires shared strength of community to overcome. No one can do it alone.
Please join us this Saturday June 11th from 2-6pm at Trolley Stop, in the Oregon District. Donations will be accepted at the door as well as several donation buckets throughout the venue. There will be T-shirts, raffles, and a silent auction as well. The Trolley Stop has been very generous in donating 10% of all sales from the entire day to this event so please come early, stay late, and feast upon the culinary delicacies that the Trolley Stop has to offer. Online donations can be made here: https://www.paypal.me/

WDPR Invites You To Catch A Rising Star
WDPR Discover Classical 88.1 & 89.9 will host its annual Catch a Rising Star gala this Saturday, June 4, at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery (2600 Deweese Pkwy, Dayton). Doors open at 7 p.m.
Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served at the semi-formal event along with wine and beer from Yellow Springs Brewery. The gala is named for its format, which includes multiple performances by up-and-coming young classical musicians throughout the evening.
Croatian classical guitarist Ana Vidovic will headline Saturday’s event. The 35-year-old virtuosa began learning guitar at five years old and has been performing internationally since age 11. At 13, she became the youngest student ever to attend the prestigious National Music Academy in Zagreb, and later studied at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.
Classical Guitar Magazine described her talent as producing “so many moments of insight that you often feel you are listening to the music for the first time,” and Guitar Review wrote, “It is difficult to know where to begin when discussing the enormous talents of Ana Vidovic. Her dynamic range, beauty of sound, precision of articulation and virtuosity are such that listening becomes more of an absolute musical experience.”
In a rarity for classical musicians, Vidovic has also become a viral sensation, garnering millions of views for her YouTube videos.
Homegrown talent will also be on display at Saturday’s event.
“Catch a Rising Star is our chance to shine the spotlight on up-and-coming classical musicians from the Dayton region, many of of whom we first met through our annual Young Talent Search,” said Shaun Yu, President/CEO of Discover Classical, “The talent is absolutely stellar, and we couldn’t believe our good fortune when Ms. Vidovic made herself available for this event.”

Three classical guitarists from Dayton will perform: brothers Garrett (age 16) and Mason (14) Chambal, and Connor Barney, a recent Wright State University alum who will begin graduate studies at Indiana University this fall.
Other scheduled performers are Eva Skanse, flute performance major at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the first flutist ever to win WDPR’s Discover Classical Young Talent Search, and Alex Wunder, an operatic baritone who graduated from Kettering-Fairmont High School this spring and will attend Belmont University in Nashville this fall. Wunder is, to date, the only male vocalist to win the Discover Classical Young Talent Search.
The Catch a Rising Star event will also include a raffle with prizes from artisans, businesses, and organizations from around the region, with tickets priced at 1 for $25 and 3 for $50. All proceeds from the evening benefit Discover Classical, Dayton’s public, 24-hour classical music station, which relies on listener support for most of its annual funding.
Tickets are $88.10 and can still be purchased at 937-222-9377, http://www.discoverclassical.org, and at the door the night of the event.

I recently visited the ThinkTV offices and studio on April 8, 2016 for a short tour/photoshoot with Isaiah Ashba, Manager of Events & Projects for ThinkTV. “Celebrating our 40th Anniversary is really a tribute to our community- the support we receive each year, hundreds of donors and volunteers are truly the ones that make the GreatTV Auction such a special event for us. 450-500 volunteers dedicate around 3,800 hours,” said Ashba. In addition, hundreds of local businesses and national companies have donated thousands of items in support of the auction.
“The GreatTV Auction is very much a volunteer-driven event. We have a crew of volunteers who have been writing copy for the auction items every Saturday since January,” said Operations Committee volunteer Jessica Singleton.

Make a Date for the Academy Awards: Dessert with Oscar
Dayton LOVES the movies! Art houses, local theaters, megaplexes and drive-ins all across the region guarantee you can see all the nominated pictures. Plus – beyond watching the movies, we’ve got a great collection of professional and aspiring filmmakers working and living right here. We’ve got the connections to the movies, and on Hollywood’s biggest night – Oscar Night – we’ve got the parties, too!
One of those parties is Dessert with Oscar – a fundraiser for local nonprofit, FilmDayton. FilmDayton hosts the annual FilmDayton Festival (scheduled for August 23-25, 2013), offers professional development for filmmakers, networking and educational opportunities, and acts as the regional film commission – supporting indie and commercial film projects that want to use the backdrop of the Miami Valley for their project.
This Oscar watch party puts the emphasis on party. Instead of seeing the action on the big screen in stadium seating, they welcome guests to The Venue on Third (905 E. Third Street) where multiple TVs will broadcast the show, allowing you to watch the action while enjoying the party. What’s included?

Local chefs from great places such as Ovations, Baked, Scratch Event Catering, Carmen’s Deli, J. Gumbo’s UD, and the Sinclair Culinary Competition Team create tasty desserts themed after the Best Picture Nominees. You might get some authentic bread pudding out of Louisiana for Beasts of the Southern Wild or perhaps enjoy a twist on some ‘white cake’ for Django Unchained. Come and see what kind of creativity connects the desserts to their films!
As a fundraiser for the organization, we’re keeping ticket prices affordable, but bringing the bling with an exciting film-themed silent auction! See the pictures of some of the great prizes. Everything for the practical bidder (you have to go to dinner anyway) to the film lover (autographed photos, DVDs, pilot scripts and more) to the Dayton Connoisseur (tickets to great local experiences) to the true adventurer with a Specialty Background Role on a hit TV comedy with extra casting by Calltime Casting. You never know what stars may show up when you’re on set at the reality-TV spoof The Real Husbands of Hollywood – see the clip below to get an idea!
Food, prizes, and so much more. If you know your movies, you can submit a ballot and make your predictions on who is taking Oscar home. If you just want to follow the action for fun – play Oscar Bingo! As we watch the events unfold, you’ll watch who cries, thanks God or forgets to mention their agent – and hopefully they’ll line up to win you BINGO!
Be our guest for a champagne toast then the bar will be pouring all night. Come as you are, but ‘sparkly and fun’ attire is welcome!
