Warped Wing Brewing Co. and Century Bar Collaborate On Kette’s Pride!

November 3, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Century bar has started construction on Kette’s Kandies. The Century’s new 1920’s inspired speakeasy cocktail bar.

From 1909-1913 the building at 10 South Jefferson Street was home to the Kette and Sons Whiskey Company. But during the flood of 1913, their building was destroyed by fire. Afterwards, Kette, seeing prohibition looming, exited the whiskey trade and opened a candy store. “That inspired the name and store front for our new speakeasy lounge”, said Century’s Joe Head. “It’s a great story and we want people to experience the rich heritage Dayton had during that place and period in time.”

To help kick off the project, Century Bar and Warped Wing Brewing Company have collaborated on another barrel-aged beer. “The Kette’s made and sold rye whiskey, so we decided to use rye whiskey barrels as our aging vehicle”, said Head. “And because my favorite style of beer is Porter, we worked together with Warped Wing’s Brewmaster John Haggerty to develop the beer. “The beer is coal black in color with aromas of cocoa, vanilla and bourbon and notes of dark roasted malt, bourbon and hints of wood with tannins from the barrel”, says John Haggerty. “We’re calling it Kette’s Pride. The name is a tip of the hat to Kette who was and will be remembered as a Dayton icon”, according to Nick Bowman, VP of Sales & Marketing for Warped Wing.  Kette’s is 8% ABV.

This very limited draft only release will be available at Century Bar next Wednesday, November 8th.  The Century will host a toast event at 5pm to celebrate the kick-off of construction at Kette’s Kandies. It will also be available in the Warped Wing taproom.

Say Goodbye To Warped Wing Pints

September 12, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Beginning September 18th Warped Wing Brewing Co. will be transitioning all of their 16 oz. 4-pack can offerings to 12 oz. 6-packs. This will include all of their core beers, seasonal and limited edition runs. In addition, Warped Wing has purchased a versatile bottling line for special limited production offerings.

“We’ve put a lot of time and effort into the decision to transition to a 12 oz. can,” said Nick Bowman, Managing Partner & V.P. of Sales & Marketing. “Last year we engaged in a fairly extensive customer brand survey. What we learned from our customers was that even though they liked our 16 oz. canned beer offerings and thought they were unique, they ultimately prefer 12 oz. 6-pack portioning. This was a practical decision that also gave us the opportunity to evolve our brand look and feel. Consumers will see a slightly modified design of the cans. This new packaging decision also runs in parallel to a ramped up retail presence this Fall” said Bowman.

“In addition to the new cans, our new bottling line will be commissioned in November for our Bourbon Barrel Aged program as well as some of our limited beers. We will offer 2 different bottle sizes: 375 ml and 500 ml bottle size. We are very excited to add small batch bottle selections to our portfolio. It’s unimaginable the potential we will have to offer our customers” said Bowman.

John Haggerty, Warped Wing’s Managing Partner & Brewmaster is working with Dipran S.R.L., an Italian manufacturer of bottle fillers, to create a state-of–the-art bottle filling line that will cater to ever-changing customer tastes. “The bottling line has some unique features and flexibility” said Haggerty. “It gives us so much greater opportunity, versatility and capability” he said.

To help celebrate this transition with their customers, Warped Wing will be hosting a 12 oz. can party at the brewery on Thursday, September 21st in the taproom at 5PM. Core 12 oz. 6-packs as well as the latest Fall seasonal, CreepShow will be available for carryout and on tap. The initial rollout of the new cans to wholesale will start on Monday, September 18th.

Cardboard Crowns Kickstarter Event!

September 11, 2017 By Brian Petro

Cardboard Crowns Logo

Opening in October 2017…

The intersection of board games and beverages is not a new phenomenon. For those that have been enjoying coffee shops since the late 90’s, there has always been a few well-loved board games on the shelves of our favorite place to grab a cappuccino to start the day. It was not until 2010 that two enterprising Canadians opened Snakes and Lattes, the first café to offer games as a reason to get some coffee with friends, not just as an added benefit. In the seven years they have been open, they have witnessed an explosion of venues that offers drinks and light snacks while gamers enjoy some beverages and explore new games. While many started with coffee drinks, there has been an evolution into craft beer and craft cocktails. Coming soon, a new venue in the Dayton area will offer a space to explore gaming with good friends. Cardboard Crowns will be opening up this fall at 147 N. Springboro Pike, and they want you to be part of the fun with a Kickstarter Launch Party this Saturday, September 16 from 12 PM to 5 PM at Warped Wing Brewery!

Head to the brewery to learn about the Kickstarter, play new games and enjoy great craft beer. At this event, you have the opportunity to meet the owner and manager of Cardboard Crowns and hear about everything they have planned for the cafe. They will be introducing the support levels for their Kickstarter at the event, but you can prepare with this handy list:

  • $5 – Show your support for Cardboard Crowns and get your name inlaid in a wooden hex in the cafe’s bar top.
  • $15 – Donate a seat for one of our guests with your name on it! (Plus Bar Hex)
  • $25 – Help us grow the cafe’s library by backing a new game for the cafe’s collection, adding your name to the game’s inside box lid for all to see! (Plus Bar Hex)
  • $50 – Donate a section of shelving that will bear your name for all to see! (Plus Bar Hex)
  • Cardboard Crowns In Progress

All his space for gaming in progress!

$75 – You helped us purchase a table for the cafe that will forever bear your name! (Plus Bar Hex)

  • $100 – Two tickets to the cafe’s grand opening party, a private event open only to Kickstarter supporters! Each ticket includes drinks, food, your name in one of the cafe’s games, and a bar hex.
  • $300 – You’re donating the coolest seating option the cafe has to offer.  Our 6-seater booths will make you feel like you’re a VIP for the night.  As part of this reward, you’ll get to pick the board game that will be framed and used to theme one of our booths; your name will go on a plaque in the booth, you’ll get two tickets to the grand opening party and a hex on the bar top.
  • $350 –  The ultimate party experience.  You and seven friends get the cafe’s party booth for the night!  The package includes two drinks per person, two food items per person and a dedicated board game teacher to help make sure your group has a night they won’t forget!
  • $1000 – The cafe will only have one 8-seater party booth, and you’re going to help us theme it and put your name on it!  As part of this reward, you’ll get to pick the board game that will be framed and used to theme the cafe’s party booth; your name will go on a plaque in the party booth, you’ll get two tickets to the grand opening party and a monster sized hex on the bar top.
  • $2000 – The back of the cafe will feature a relaxed social corner for folks to sit down in and play social/party games.  Back at this level and you’ll get your name on a plaque letting folks know who made the area possible.  Additionally, you’ll get two tickets to the grand opening party and a mammoth sized hex on the bar top.
Cardboard Crowns game collection

So many games to play!

All of this support is going into a gaming café that has been planned out and well researched by Ben Adams, the owner of the venue. Ben has visited many other of these cafes across the country and has worked hard to address the most common issues he found in each location. To cut down on the noise of many games going on at once, soundproofing materials will be used on the walls and in booth separators to quiet down the space. Access to the cafe and its collection of over 700 games will be just a $5 library fee per person, and if you are looking to play in a private booth, an extra ten dollars for the party can provide that privacy. As mentioned above, there will also be a larger space for party games and party booth for private events.

They have developed a rating system for each one of the games, so those that are just getting into the hobby have an idea of the involvement of the game. Green labels are less involved games, where a quick explanation of the rules by one of the cafe’s game masters should be enough to get a group started. Yellow labels are more complex, and there will be staff on hand to help answer questions as you play. Red labels will be very intricate, heavy strategy games which may require more explanation than the team can provide. And with over 700 games in the collection, not every staff member will know all the games.  Booths and tables will have tablets available that will provide videos to explain the rules of almost any game in the cafe’s collection.

This Saturday, September 16th from 12 to 5 PM, is the big launch party! You will have the opportunity to support this new venture while playing some games with the owner and enjoying craft beers by Warped Wing. There are even some hints about game giveaways that day. Ben and the Cardboard Crowns team look forward to seeing all of you this weekend!

“Whiskey Rebellion” Release Party Saturday

November 17, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

WHISKEYREBELLIONFor the second consecutive year Warped Wing Brewing Company (WWBC) a Dayton craft brewery is releasing “Whiskey Rebellion”, a bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout. The brew is a collaborative effort between the brewery and The Century Bar.

As the story on the can reads:

“Swelling national debt in the late 1700s led to a government-imposed whiskey tax, which crippled the emerging bourbon trade. Thirsting for freedom, an undaunted few rose up and sparked our second great revolution. In time, the reins of government control unraveled. And a truce was penned. At last, the cuffs of commonwealth came off, liberating the free flow of bourbon once again. Whiskey Rebellion. A Russian Imperial Stout steeped in reclaimed bourbon barrels. Marked with accents of chocolate, vanilla and, what else, bourbon. Stand your ground.”

The Brewery will host a release party on Saturday, November 21st at 12:00pm. This year the beer will be available in both cans and draught. 2-packs of 16 oz. cans will be available in the taproom only and will be priced at $22. Supplies are limited with one case max per customer. The beer will be available for sale in draught only to bars, restaurants and retail the following week.

In addition to the Whiskey release, 6 other rare bourbon barrel aged beers will be tapped throughout the day with schedule to be released later this week.

Bendy Beer – Yoga at Warped Wing

August 9, 2015 By Nikki Nett

kaitlin yoga 3Warped Wing is opening it’s big door for a new class. Beermaking? No. Beer tasting? Nope.

Yoga. You can do yoga at Dayton’s very own Warped Wing Brewing Company. Flying Rye kind of sounds like a yoga pose, right?

It’s always so exciting to see former co-workers moving on to bigger, better, and in this case, bendier things. That’s why I was doing headstands of excitement (ok, I wasn’t, I’m just not there yet) to see my friend Kate putting together this unique event. She has spent the last few years becoming a yoga instructor and wanted to introduce yoga to those who may not normally be the “yoga-type”.

You may be thinking “what’s the yoga type?” and if given a list of descriptions, you’d probably not choose “craft beer drinker”. But, Kate is betting those two will go together like barley and hops, or warrior pose and lululemon.

When I asked her why she put this event together, she said,  “I love bringing the community together for a fun and care-free afternoon. What a better way to spend your time than with yoga and a craft beer? I am passionate about spreading the joy of yoga and bringing craft beer into the mix opens the door to many new people that may have not tried a yoga class.”kaitlin yoga 2

Due to the increasing popularity of this event, participants must purchase tickets in advance to guarantee a spot (yes, the last one sold out!) The next class is scheduled for Sun, Sept 6th,  click here for tickets.

From Kate’s event page:

Could yoga & beer ever exist? You bet your flexible-ass they can! Join us at Warped Wing Brewing Company for a rocking one-hour yoga class followed with a beer from the local brewery.

We will move through a fluid sequence of postures (asanas), focus on our breath (pranayama), that invigorate, strengthen, and restore the body.

This all levels class is ideal for anyone who is interested in exploring yoga in a different & chill environment & wants to expand their minds in respect to local beers.

Cost is $12, which includes a 1-hour yoga class followed by a pint of your choice. Must be 21 to attend.
Class will start right at NOON, so come early to get settled in!
BYOM (Bring your own mat) & water.

Hope you’ll join us for this fun afternoon of yoga & beer. I’ll be the one in the back, perfecting the childs pose and waiting for the Ermals.

Warped Wing Releases Summer Saison Thursday

April 29, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

11136657_829439873802162_999054952603734735_nA motivated group of engineers, the likes of Deeds, Patterson and Kettering to name a few gathered in a small barn out behind a house. These men, Dayton’s most formidable heavyweights of invention contemplated the future of industry. And discussed scientific and technological issues over long hours, cold nights and yes, Saison. The result? Some of the most important inventions known to mankind. These Dayton drivers of forethought were appropriately named the “Barn Gang”.

Warped Wing has  brewed this beer to celebrate the efforts of these hard working gentlemen. This Farmhouse ale is hazy, opaque, golden straw in color. Its Dry hopped with Vic Secret hops, which provides a melon and white grape aroma and flavor with a mild citrus note. There’s an ever so slight bitterness with just enough bite to balance the beer. The malt character is light and crisp and the beer finishes very dry.

Stop by the Warped Wing Brewing Company at 26 Wyandot this Thursday at 5pm to be amongst the first to try this beer, perfect for summer swilling.

A Glimpse Back in Time Inspires Dayton’s Tipping Point

December 3, 2014 By Guest Contributor

Dayton, we’ve reached the tipping point.

Over the last two decades there’s been a number of significant blips on the radar that have suggested downtown still has a pulse.

Since I moved out of the suburbs and into Dayton in 2007, I’ve been one of the dedicated many shouting that battle cry.

I think those blips have hit a threshold. I think that momentum is finally reaching something special.Building

I’d like to thank America’s brewery boom and reaching back to our roots. This year the number of breweries in the U.S. topped 3000 for the first time since the 1870s.

The Dayton area itself has experienced much of the same. For downtown’s sake, it got its first neo-foray into brewing when Toxic Brew Company opened in 2012. Toxic brought Dayton its first brewery since the closure of the Dayton Brewing Corporation in 1961.

This was another blip on the radar, albeit a very important blip that led up to this year.

I’m not sure where I had read it, but I remember hearing something about a brewery in the old foundry building on Wyandot Street.

In college my band had played a show at The Foundry, and while Dayton wasn’t ready for it then, you couldn’t deny the industrial feel was something special.

Every time I passed it, I gazed inside and wondered if it, like many grandiose Dayton dreams (The Merc), were big plans that didn’t pan out for one reason or another.

Then, out of nowhere on Twitter I read “Hey! this Warped Wing place is opening in like two weeks!”

After catching The Coens’ “Inside Llewn Davis” at The Neon, a friend and I ventured over to Warped Wing for their opening day.

Much of the place was just as I remembered it, a wide-open, factory-like space, constructed mostly of concrete, only the stage was replaced by a large 30 barrel brewhouse and three 60 barrel fermenters.

The turnout was great. It wasn’t overwhelming, but a steady crowd of mostly Gen X’ers slowly introduced themselves to a fine new establishment deeply rooted in Dayton’s history.

That’s where I think the buy local trend and Warped Wing have meshed so well that a firestorm of momentum is moving this city forward.

Tasting+RoomInside everything Warped Wing has to offer, there is a story, rooted in Dayton, its innovation, and its past. The brewery itself is named after the breakthrough concept in wing construction, discovered by Dayton’s own Wright Brothers while developing their famous Wright Flyer.

So they’re a brewery, what about their beer, what makes this place special?

Again, it’s the storytelling. Ermal’s Cream Ale? An homage to Ermal Fraze, who invented the pop-top in Dayton in the 1950s. The Flyin’ Rye IPA? Another tribute to the Wright Brothers, and Dayton’s rich history in aerospace. How about the 10 Ton Oatmeal Stout? An homage to the 10 ton box crane inside the building itself, that was part of the foundry when it was constructed in 1937.

If you want to learn about the power of storytelling, any Peter Gruber or Jim Signorelli book is a great read, but what good is storytelling if it stays inside the walls of the old iron foundry warped wing operates in?

The key connecting all the dots has been Warped Wings mindblowing ability to distribute its product. When the president of your company is the brains behind Dayton’s wildly popular AleFest, you know you’re off to a good start, and Joe Waizmann has shown just that.

Within two weeks of opening I needed more than two hands to count the numbers of bars and restaurants that proudly served Dayton’s own Warped Wing beer.

Then summer arrived and Warped Wing can 4-packs were a real item you could go to your local grocery and buy Dayton’s own. Each can, brilliantly illustrated, tells its story of how it came to be.4pack

I headed south to a party with friends in Cincy and gave the birthday girl a 4-pack for her birthday. EVERYONE wondered when they too could get Warped Wing at their grocery store.

Not only are they just telling amazing stories, they’re working with other Dayton originals and creating new ones. Dayton’s own Press Coffee? Why not make a beer with them. Dayton’s renowned Century Bar? Of course you HAVE to create a beer with them.

Their partnerships are not just reserved for the cool places in town, how about Esther Price, a staple in Dayton since 1926? Of course, Warped Wing has created a beer with them also.

All of this brings me to this past weekend. Thanksgiving weekend, when everyone journeys in from the current place they call home to return to the first place they called home.

The tasting room at Warped Wing isn’t small by any means. Friday I stood in line, shoulder to shoulder with strangers when I ran into some old friends, and a group of guys I went to high school with.

One of the guys I went to school with has been living in Chicago for some time, and he asked some questions about Warped Wings beers and by the end of this conversation he arrived at stating “Man, this place is almost too good to be true for Dayton, isn’t it?”

A few minutes later, I ran into the old friends I hadn’t seen in a while, one of which has been living in DC. Big smile on his face, he says “This place…this place is great.”

This was probably the tenth time I’ve been to Warped Wing in the nine months its been open, and it’s a rare occasion I see someone I know there, but that’s what makes the place so special.

It’s not just a hipster place where the kids are hang out; there are just as many people from the 35+ crowd. EVERY TIME I’m there, I see new faces I don’t see elsewhere downtown.

It’s completely realistic that on any visit you could share a pint, and make a friend, Warped Wing’s motto.

This is the place that is finally luring people out of the the suburbs to visit and try Dayton’s own Warped Wing.

In the scheme of things Warped Wing is just another brewery that sells beer, but this brewery has done something much more important, it’s inspired Dayton.

Hopefully you’ve all seen the Dayton Inspires campaign, it’s awesome, but I think a lot of the real problem has lied somewhere else…

No one has inspired Dayton.

Warped Wing has instilled a sense of pride in people. They can visit their local bar or restaurant, and order Dayton’s own and watch it come right of the tap next to the big dogs of Anheuser-Busch.

People can throw a a barbeque and offer friends a pint of beer proudly rooted in Dayton’s history.

It doesn’t have to be Tumbleweed’s famous “Dayton’s alright if you haven’t been anywhere else” sticker anymore, it’s alright to take pride in Dayton again.

People are holding their class reunions at Warped Wing, they’re showing it off to their families, and it’s the new place people want to check out when they’re in town for the holidays.

Warped Wing absolutely isn’t leading this resurgence alone. Dayton continues to step up with monumental improvements in key areas, like the ball park area for instance…

  • Over the last 5 years the Litehouse and Simms townhomes nearby have exploded onto the scene.
  • Water Street is primed to be the new jewel of the Gem City.
  • Riverscape has made tremendous progress and River Run will be here in no time.
  • Chris Wire’s Proto Build Bar is a fresh, and innovation concept.
  • Finally the old mendelson building by the ballpark is going to be developed into something I have no doubt will be amazing.

The Dayton Dragons and the Schuster Center were huge players in laying the framework to create districts people want to visit, and with the Downtown Dayton Partnership and the Greater Downtown Plan working full steam ahead to connect those, you can already start to see the dominoes falling.

While these huge investments were necesary to the viability of downtown, they haven’t created an experience that is uniquely Dayton; they’re more a means to providing exceptional entertainment from around the country.

I would argue Dayton has almost always had great local entertainment options, but since everyone moved to the suburbs over 50 years ago, Dayton-area people have needed a little help believing in what downtown has to offer.

Ironically, we had to go back 150 years to an industry forgotten in Dayton to retell the city’s story, to reaffirm it’s something to be proud of, and that Dayton does in fact inspire.

Celebrate International Stout Day With A Local Brew

November 5, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

10730897_734404563305694_5537387662222991057_n“There’s no taming our great American spirit. Especially when it comes to a good old-fashioned revolution. Introducing ‘Whiskey Rebellion’. Raise a glass to your brave forefathers who helped defend our freedoms, rights and innovative Dayton, O distilling heritage. The beer, named after the whiskey tax protests back in 1791 begins with fresh brewed Russian Imperial Stout. Then it’s craftfully aged to perfection in reclaimed bourbon barrels from the Bluegrass state. If you like bourbon and beer apart you’ll like them better together. Stand united. Whiskey Rebellion.” As described by Nick Bowman, head of Sales & Marketing at WWBC.
