Food Adventures

Say It Ain’t So, Rinaldo !

September 2, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Rinaldo’s Bakery – 45 years comes to a close

One of Dayton’s Iconic bakeries is closing September 14th.  No more huge elephant ears, half moon cookies, Italian wedding cake, tiramisu, or “adult” birthday cakes.  Rinaldo’s Bake Shoppe, located just north of downtown at  at 910 Fairview Ave., plans on closing its doors forever in less than 2 weeks.

The Food Adventure is over for Rinaldo and Anna Stolfo, who came to Dayton from Italy and have been making baked goods for 45 years.  The bakery has been a staple for local Italian specialties and Kosher items.    The closing will come a day after the Dayton Italian Festival weekend aka “Fall Festa,” which depends on Rinaldo’s Bakery for many dessert items.  The date of closing also coincides with  the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Rinaldo and Anna’s son, John had taken over most of the operations of the bakery, but John’s health concerns and the work load proved too much for the family to keep bearing.   Daytonians will miss this one of a kind bakery.

We at Dayton Most Metro and Food Adventures would like to congratulate the Stolfo family on the success of their life’s work, since opening the bakery in 1970.  Every time we visited we were met with a smile, and treated like family.  We have enjoyed spending time with the family at the Bella Villa Hall as club members, and appreciate all the specialty cookies they made for us and each specialty cake that made our party a success.

Treadway’s Gardens: On the Vine Since ’69

August 28, 2015 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Mrs and Mr Treadway, Owners of Treadway’s Garden since 1969

93 year old Frank Treadway sits in the shade, on a swing with his wife, in front of his Centerville farm and produce stand.  He talks about getting married in 1946, and driving from his Cumberland Kentucky home to Dayton on his honeymoon..  He and his wife fell in love with Dayton, and the rest as they say, is history.  And what a history it is, Treadway’s Garden, on State Route 48 near Social Row Rd., has left a legacy of fresh farm produce through 3 generations.

The whole family is involved, even grandkids, students and part time adults.  The result is a haven of produce and flowers that has become a staple in Centerville.

Treadway’s Gardens is a favorite stop of Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax.  Why?  The inviting atmosphere, the great local fruits and veggies. And finally, of course the  friendly service is the clincher.   You feel welcome, they treat you like family.   It is a true joy to stop by the garden and see what’s happening.

And who better that the Food Adventures Crew to give you the inside scoop on Treadway’s!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— TREADWAY’S GARDEN is located at 10245 Dayton Lebanon Pike, in Washington Township/ Centerville

Ripe, Red Tomatoes ready for salad, sauce or slicing

— Treadway’s Hours – 7 days a week , 10am – 7pm, Memorial day thru Halloween.

During Sept and Oct., they usually stay open until 6pm.

Don’t forget they sell Frazier Fur Christmas trees from North Carolina in the winter !

— A true family owned business.  Mr. and Mrs. Treadway started selling produce at the farm in 1969.   Today their three children all have a hand in the farm.  Stephanie has been running the operations for the past 9 years.  Her brother Jeff tends to the bees, and honey making.   Janet, who recently retired form teaching, is now involved with the farm too!  All of the grandkids and that have lived in the area have worked at the garden and benefited in a lot of ways.  They learned the meaning of hard work and family values.  Mr. Treadway told Big Ragu, “If you wan’t to lose that belly, I can get you working here picking some produce in the field.”  Farm chores are a heck of a workout.

Chef House tours the farm with Stephanie Treadway Wilson

–— Stephanie Treadway Wilson took us on a tour of the 10 acre farm.  They rotate farming 5 acres each year.  We saw the bees and an old smoker near the farm house.  Those cluster of structures are some of the oldest buildings in Montgomery county.

— They have a “pick your own” option for some of the vegetables throughout the summer.  In past decades, adults would mostly do this, in recent years, there has been a trend where parents take their kids to the field to help them learn about freshly grown fruits and vegetables.  There motto is “Our garden is your garden.”  Each child who comes to the garden gets a free Zinnia Flower from the farm.  They make you feel welcome at every turn.

Treadway’s is very kid friendly !

— There are also some local sauces, jams, etc. for sale at the garden, including Housemade Sriracha and Housemade Hot Honey, which of course our close to our heart.

— Giving back to the community – Treadway’s supports many local organizations such as MDA and Alzheimers local charities.  The Big Ragu can remember when he worked MDA fundraising events from 1994-2002, the Treadway family would donate much of the concession stand produce used for hamburger and sausage toppings.   Stephanie’s 3 children all worked for the MDA camp as well.  The family is humble and quiet about their local charity involvement, but we want to sing those praises here.

Now it is time to taste some of the bountiful harvest.   They are all fresh and delicious products, but we have our faves.

Without further delay, here at the MUST EATS at Treadway’s Garden !

Take a bite out of the delicious peaches, at Treadway’s

MUST EATS:

— PEACHES: The cleanest, plumpest, juiciest peaches known to man are here.  We find ourselves unable to get to the car before taking a chomp out of one of the peaches we bought.  Freshness in every bite, tell us what you think after trying one of these gems.  Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu recommend these as favorites.

— NATURAL HONEY: Made on site from bees on site !  Mr Treadway himself and son Jeff tend to the bees.  The result is your benefit, with some of the tastiest honey you have ever tried. On toast, or drizzled over good food, you cant go wrong. We also love cooking with this stuff!

— SWEET CORN: Some of the best in the area and 50 cents per ear.  Like all of Treadway’s produce, you can count on them to be beautiful, fresh and delicious.  We have been making them 3 ways this summer: steaming, boiling and grilling the corn in the husk.    It kicks your cookouts up a notch.  So sweet, so delicious, we add a bit of butter and salt and as Jackie Gleason said .. “How sweet it is !”  The Big Ragu highly recommends this corn on the cob!

Lots of Pepper Choices from Hot to Not

— CANTALOUPES:  Hungry Jax says you cant go wrong with the cantaloupe at Treadway’s Garden.  Juicy, fresh and beautiful, they make the healthiest of summer time treats and eats.  A versatile fruit, this deliciousness goes well with practically any meal.

— TOMATOES : Giant, plump and juicy tomatoes in trays adorn the greeting area.  The display speaks for itself.  Slice them up alone with some salt or sugar, or use them in a salad.  We prefer a slice with our grilled burgers.   Also, Hungry Jax and Big Ragu like them for helping make the perfect marinara sauce.  Here is a Food Adventure tip from Chef House: The 50% off tomato bin is great!

— ONIONS: Some of the best looking, large onions around are found here.  We asked Mr Treadway, what is your favorite thing on the farm? He answered, :Onions and tomatoes! You can make a meal with them by themselves.”  You know what, he is right.  Listen to the expert with 68 years of farming experience.

Green Peppers

— SUPER CHILE PEPPERS:  These are some very tasty peppers. They are grown like Thai chilies, pointing up towards the sky, but they are in the cayenne family, which are not as hot as Thai Chiles.  Chef House knows good, spicy food, and she says these peppers are perfect for cooking.

— CAYENNE PEPPERS:  You have never seen cayenne peppers this big.  Chef House recommends these magnificent looking peppers to  give some heat to your summer cooking.  Truth be told, Chef House also walks around sometimes, munching on these peppers.  Now that’s a hot habit.

— PUMPKINS:  Chef House is always impressed and obsessed with the beautiful pumpkins at Treadway’s. Carving or cooking, you have found the perfect local place to grab your Halloween and Thanksgiving Pumpkin needs

Sweet Corn at Treadway’s Garden on State Route 48 in Centerville

What’s on the horizon for Treadway’s Gardens?  Frank’s grandson (Stephanie’s son) Taylor is being groomed to eventually take a more leading role in operations.  One of his current additions to the mix, is putting Treadway’s produce in the Oakwood Farmer’s Market.  This has helped introduce more Dayton people to their amazing goods.
What is the secret to 46 years of successful farming and produce sales?

Frank Treadway says “word of mouth,” and points to the customers who were sitting and talking to each other.  He feels the inviting atmosphere makes customers comfortable and coming back for more.

Stephanie says passion plays a big part too.  “If a person has passion for what they are doing they will succeed.   It seems that success comes if you are passionate about anything you do and are a well rounded person.”   Great advice from one of Centerville’s iconic families.

Make sure you visit Treadway’s Garden, have a seat in the shade, and enjoy the field of dreams yourself.

Thinking Outside the Kid’s Lunch Box

August 13, 2015 By Dayton937

“Banana Dog” – a fun twist on PB&J

It feels like summer barely started and here we are already looking to start another school year! It’s that time of year again where we make sure our kiddos have the necessary supplies, new clothes and even technology to start the school year off right. In addition to being so conscious about your student’s educational needs, let’s explore some creative and delicious options for their appetites!

After all, Food Adventures aren’t just for adults !  Dayton Most Metro’s resident foodie mom, Hungry Jax, is here for some tips on making the most of your children’s school lunches!

EQUIPMENT:

First, let’s talk about the lunch box hardware that is helpful for making health, fun and easy lunches. Obviously, a good lunch box that has a thermal lining will help keep foods fresh and flavorful while it hangs out in your kid’s locker or coatroom. Buy a mini ice pack to toss into the lunch box/bag to further ensure their food stays cold.

Depending on beverages that your child prefers at lunch, a good thermos to keep water, milk or juice cold is also important. Finally, there are so many lunch container options that help parents create their own “bento box” for kids on the market. You can find many options in the food storage aisle of your local grocery store.

SUN-BUTTER:

While peanut butter and jelly has always been a fantastic “go to” for school lunches, these days many schools are not allowing nut butters due to allergy concerns for their students. A close alternative is using Sun-butter, which is made from sunflower seeds. Sun-butter has a very similar taste and consistency to peanut butter! Some kids might notice the difference right away, but keep offering it to them and they eventually will get used to it. You can find sun-butter in most grocery stores in the natural foods section.

TOO CRUSTY?

Do your kids not like the crust on their sandwiches? Get creative! Use large cookie cutters to cut their sandwiches into fun shapes! You can also buy actually sandwich cutters that are made to cut the shapes out to as close as the edge as possible so as to not waste any food.

Now THIS is a fruit roll-up!

Now THIS is a fruit roll-up!

TORTILLAS TO THE RESCUE:

Hungry Jax will vouch that when in doubt, put food rolled up into a tortilla and a kid will eat it. Just about any sandwich filling can be rolled up and even sliced into pinwheels! One of her family favorites is taking 8oz of cream cheese and whipping it with a tsp of vanilla and tsp of lemon zest. Slather a wheat tortilla with this mixture and then add fresh fruit. Roll up and leave whole or slice it up! A refreshing lunch that’s not the same old lunch meat or pb&j! And it’s versatile! Instead of a sweet cream cheese, go savory with chopped herbs and veggies!

DO THE DIP:

Another thing that kids like to do: dip their food into stuff. Why not make some fresh humus and chop up some veggies or pitas to dip? Slice up a baguette, pepperoni and mozzarella and let them dip it in homemade marinara for a fun play on pizza.

HOMEMADE vs STORE MADE:

Are your kids a fan of those popular pre-made lunch containers found in the refrigerator section of the grocery store? You know the ones: they have slimy, pre-cut lunchmeat, cheeses and crackers? We aren’t. And here’s why: we can create our own version for cheaper and healthier. Buy a stack of the segmented lunch containers (one for each day of the week). Chop up your own meats and cheeses on Sunday night and divvy them up within the containers. The night before or morning of, add crackers, fruit/veggies and whatever else you want. Boom. You just saved yourself money and preservatives.

SMOOTH & HEALTHY MOVES:

Do your kids like smoothies? Make a batch of smoothies on Sunday. Freeze them in small containers and on the morning of school, toss one in their lunch bag (don’t forget the straw). By lunchtime, the smoothie will have thawed enough to drink! It also duos as an ice pack!

Homemade granola is a great addition to a healthy lunch!

Homemade granola is a great addition to a healthy lunch!

Yogurt is another great option. Let your kids build their own yogurt parfaits! Buy a tub of yogurt and divvy it up into small containers on Sunday night (yes, we are keeping you busy on your Sundays). Chop up fruit for them to add as well as granola! Even toss in some chocolate chips for a special treat! Your kids will have fun assembling their parfaits and you can feel good that they are getting a healthy meal!

Salads are another great option where you can include healthy and fun options. Also consider pasta salads!

With a little forethought and preparation, you can provide your kids (and yourself) with healthy and fun lunch options that are more affordable and creative!

INTERNET & INPUT:

There are so many ideas out there on the internet! Start a Pinterest board and let your creative juices flow! And don’t forget to let your kids help! Make it a part of their nightly routine to put a lunch together for the next day. Get their input on what’s easy to eat but still fills them up. It only takes an extra 10 minutes a day to prepare your kids for the ultimate Lunch Food Adventure!

Check out some of our favorite go to websites for great recipe ideas!

WEELICOUS – a fantastic website for family meals!

100 DAYS OF REAL FOOD – learn how to feed your family with out all the preservatives!

We hope our tips gave you a few new ideas to get the most out of packing your kid’s school lunch.  Think outside the lunch box and your children will be grateful.

Meet the Food Adventures Crew !

Hungry Jax

JACLYN SCANLAN aka “HUNGRY JAX”:

Jackie relocated to the Dayton area in 2006.  This Italian girl from Upstate NY found herself in a very different culinary atmosphere than what she was used to back home in Utica, NY.  However, different proved to be good a she fell in love with not only this “gem” of a city, but also the food and foodies within it! Cooking is a passion of Jackie’s.  She loves to use her husband, John, and two daughters, Coraline and Ashlyn, as her lab rats to test recipes out.  Some of her recipes have even been published in National Food Magazines!  But as much as she loves to cook, she also loves to take a night off from her kitchen and enjoy eating out and letting someone else do all the work (and the clean up)!  Other foodie interests include 8 years of volunteering at the Dorothy Lane Market School of Cooking and being an Alton Brown fan since way back when he wore bowling shirts.  Jackie is excited to be part of the Food Adventures team and is always looking forward to experiencing some new eats!

LEEANNE HOUSE aka “CHEF HOUSE”:

Chef House

Chef House or “The Sriracha Mamma” is all about the heat.  Lover of all things spicy she is constantly in the kitchen coming up with fun new ways to whip up veggies and add a little spice.  She is a Dayton native, with lifelong experience in the restaurant industry, working with some of the best chefs in the Miami Valley.  She loves to keep it local especially in the summer when beautiful produce is plentiful. She is a true foodie who knows we have a lot to offer in Ohio!  LeeAnne is also the owner of Housemade Sauces which specializes in a locally made Sriracha Sauce and a  Hot Honey Sriracha Sauce, which have won national awards.  Chef House is also the owner of the new “Bad Dog” Hot Dog Cart which features local dogs, local toppings and local buns!  She is also involved in putting on the “Night Market” events at the Yellow Cab Building.  She is definitely a foodie fixture around town, and an up and coming Chef.

The Big Ragu

STEVE MILANO aka “THE BIG RAGU”:

A lifelong Dayton resident, his early food influence was in his mom’s kitchen and his dad’s grill.  Other incredible food memories are his grandparents’ Italian and German/Scottish cooking.  Ragu’s love of food is only matched by his love of sports, travel, karaoke and just needing to be held.  An attention seeking missile, Ragu’s favorite foods include Seafood, Italian Food, and Chinese/Japanese cuisine.  Other hobbies include overeating  and a slight attraction to deep fried menu items.   Whether a locally owned business, fine dining, a dive, buffets, fast foods and even a few chain favorites, he enjoys visiting them all with a “no rules” attitude.  You can usually recognize him at festivals by the sweaty guy with the food stain on his shirt.  Emotionally eating his way through life with the Crew, they leave no plate unturned.  Most recently, his recipes have been featured in the monthly Foremost Seafood Newsletter.  This “foodie in his forties” is proud to be involved in dozens of local charity committees.

We hope to meet you at our Dorothy Lane Market Party Foods Class, where we will be cooking up a storm.   Seats are limited, get yours before we sellout.  Learn some new recipes, taste some fantastic party eats, and go on a full blown Food Adventure !

McGillicutty’s: The Greatest Breadsticks in the World

July 25, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Best Breadsticks in the World are at McGillicutty’s, but get a side of garlic butter for dipping

The waitress brings the overflowing basket of breadsticks to the table, still steaming…. Then the look….. you glance at the others at the table.  Should you grab a piece and risk being seen as rude?  Do you pause and risk not getting one of the best breadsticks in the world?  These are the kind of problems you will face at McGillicutty’s.

A popular Kettering icon, McGillicutty’s has always been known for their food and libations.  Let’s face it, it’s bar food, and McGillicutty’s has some of the best in town.  Whether it is Tuesday Night Trivia night, or lounging after a Softball game, it is the perfect place for a laid back Food Adventure.

For decades, the Food Adventures Crew has been hitting up McGillicutty’s for good eats, and here is the full scoop on this pub.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

The Mega Mug at Mcgillicutty’s – They had ’em first !

— The Kash family has been running McGillicutty’s since the early 1990’s, and are some of the friendliest hosts around.

— The location at 1980 E. Whipp Rd. was a former Noble Roman’s restaurant in the 1970’s and 80’s

— The smell of pizza dough hits you as you walk into the door, and the low key atmosphere is great.  We know it is a family friendly tavern, but we prefer slinging back some drinks and grub with the adult crew.

— A solid group of regulars support the place from dart leagues to Tuesday Trivia (the best in town), and Sunday night Karaoke.

— They dont use deep fryers, they use pizza ovens to bake their menu items.  The result is some inventive and delicious ways to enjoy various traditional favorites.

— Known for festival involvement, another big day for McGillicutty’s is St Patricks Day !  They go bananas on that holiday….

What is the best of this extensive menu?  We’ve got the answers after years of research.  Without further delay, we present our patented MUST EATS of McGillicuttys !

MUST EATS:

— PRETZELSTICKS (BREADSTICKS): When we say must eat, we mean it here.  These are the best breadsticks we have ever tasted.  Here is secret #1.  They are called pretzelsticks on the menu, which means they are lightly salted.  Secret #2 is that you must try them with the garlic butter sauce or the cream cheese sauce.  Sure the nacho sauce is good and so is the marinara, but the garlic butter and the cream cheese are the top 2, no doubt.  You won’t see these tips anywhere else, because nobody else knows about them, except you.  Aren’t you glad to be our partners in food?

The Pepperoni Pizza from McGillicutty’s is where it’s at

— THE PEPPERONI PIZZA:  The pizza is the key.  Thin crust, square cut Dayton style pizza.  The sauce give McGillicutty’s it’s unique taste as does the cheese and the taste of the crisp dough edges.  Deluxe pizzas are great, and loaded toppings are wonderful, but for some reason we keep coming back to the basic Pepperoni as our favorite.  WARNING: the pizza is served ultra hot and we fight the urge and still burn our mouth from time to time.  So.. beware !

— THE MEGA MUG: Long before Mexican restaurants or any other bar had the huge mugs, McGillicutty’s had the MEGA MUG.  These 34 ounce mugs are perfect for ice cold draft beers, and MEGA MONDAY’s means they are only $3.50 for domestics.  No matter what day it is, get a  Mega Mug of draft beer with your pizza and breadsticks.  So good, so cold, so thirst quenching…

Teezers are Long Tater Tots Stuffed with Jalapeno Cheese

— THE TEEZERS:   Tater Tots with spicy cheese inside.  A perfect opening to a McGillicutty’s visit. We have had others, but not like these.  Maybe it is because they bake them instead of deep fry them.  Maybe it is jalapeno cheese inside.  Whatever the reason, we can’t stop eating these bad boys with a side of cream cheese!

— THE ITALIAN STEAK SANDWICH: Served in a basket with chips, you can get a half or whole sandwich.  It is a cube steak with cheese and pizza sauce.  They added onions & banana peppers, all on a hoagie bun.  For some reason the combo is a perfect sandwich after a Softball game, or for watching a sports event.

— THE  WINGS:  These are broiled, not fried, so they may be an acquired taste.  Still, get them well done and get the Buffalo Hot sauce and you should be good.  Different enough to try, and good enough to keep ordering.  The Buffalo sauce is the best option here.  We order them extra crispy, plain and dip the wings in the hot sauce.

The Philly Cheesesteak from McGillicutty’s, this is just a half, order yours whole with extra mayo

HONORABLE MENTION to the PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH at McGillicutty’s.   It s nicely flavored shaved beef on a hoagie roll.  Asking for a dash of extra mayo is the secret to this one.

Did those peak your interest?

Next time when you are hungry and thirsty, try McGillicutty’s on a warm summer day, and even enjoy their parking lot patio.  Casual drinks, casual grub and a sports tavern atmosphere is the appeal here.  And you must order the GREATEST BREADSTICKS IN THE WORLD !  You may just even see the Food Adventures Crew inside with a Mega Mug and a pizza!

Want some more inside scoop on Dayton area eateries?  Then join Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax on Facebook HERE ! We are not food critics, we just love to eat !  We visit a restaurant many times before we write a feature article.  We don’t go to a place one time and then rate it, that’s an insult to you, the reader.  No stock photos here.  Look for the most reliable, complete and informative reviews from Dayton’s fave foodies, Food Adventures!

Zombie Dogz Leads Friday’s Sons of Italy Food Truck Rally

July 14, 2015 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Zombie Dogz Leads the pack of Food Truck into the Sons of Italy Grounds this Friday

Ladies and gentleman, boys & girls, children of all ages, this Friday evening marks the first ever Sons of Italy Food Truck Rally !

Bella Villa Hall is the place to be, as 15 Food Trucks plus a huge beer truck, will descend upon the Italian lodge on County Line Rd, to kick off  The Bocce Classic / Garlic Fest Weekend.  This promises to be a great chance for you and your family and friends to experience a Food Adventure, and even toss a bocce ball !

Dayton Most Metro, Sons of Italy and Food Adventures have the inside scoop on who will be there.  How?  Because we have put together one helluva lineup, as good as the All Star Game.  Oh …and there are beer trucks as well.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— THE SONS OF ITALY FOOD TRUCK RALLY is FRIDAY JULY 17th from 5PM – 9PM

— The event will take place at 2625 COUNTY LINE RD, BEAVERCREEK, OH 45430 (The same place where the Italian Fall Festa takes place)

Wings from the Painted Pepper Food Truck

— There will be BEER TRUCKS from 5-9pm as well!

— Acoustic Guitar entertainment from local musician, DENNIS CHRISMAN

— 15 FOOD TRUCKS WILL BE ON HAND !  See below for a full list of food trucks and must eats !

***** LIST OF FOOD TRUCKS AND MUST EATS ****

We have compiled some of the best, rarest, and tastiest trucks in the Dayton area to bring you a variety of deliciousness.  Some trucks plan to feature, special garlic inspired menu items !

The food trucks attending the Sons of Italy Food Truck Rally in reverse alphabetical order, just to be different…

3 Types of Tacos from Taqueria Mixteca: Chicken, Beef and Tongue

1) ZOMBIE DOGZ: A Dayton original and local favorite!  Try their “Grande Zombe” or their “Juan of the Dead” dog.  They will bring tears to your eyes, they are so delicious.  Get in line early, they are worth it, and the crowd knows it.  Huge dogs, good prices and toppings that will blow your mind.  Prepare your taste buds to get zombified, because they may feature a garlic dog of some sort!  This is Hungry Jax’s favorite food truck, hands down.

2) THE WICKED ‘WICH OF DAYTON: Fairly new food truck that started in March, 2015 and the buzz is they have good stuff.  Not much is known about this truck yet, my pretty…  But from the looks of their Facebook pics, the turkey, roast beef, ham sandwiches etc, have a local flair.  We are looking for some great eats from them this Friday.

3) TAQUERIA MIXTECA:  Brand new truck on the scene bringing the famous, authentic tastes of Mexico.  If you have not tried their food, it is distinctively different than any other Mexican food around.  This is street food you would find in Mexico City.  Holy cow, this will be a good match with a brew from the beer trucks!  Our MUST EAT– try any of their tacos, and experience an International event of cilantro, beef and onion.

Nanna Cream Ice Pop from Sweet P’s. Get your own, this Friday

4) SONS OF ITALY’S HOLY CANNOLI BOOTH: Not a truck, this booth has one item.. CANNOLI !  The “holy cannoli” is a deep fried cannoli. It is like bigfoot, it has rarely been seen.  This masterpiece is brought to you by the local Sons of Italy chapter.  If you are dieting, just have a regular cannoli, those will be available too.

5) SWEET P’S HANDMADE ICE POPS:  Dark Chocolate Garlic Ice Pops?  Answer: oh yeah !  Taste tested and customer approved, these special pops are sure to go fast!  If you want to wuss out, then try the  “Nanna Cream” or “Sea Salted Caramel” pops.  Enjoy the luxurious tastes!

6) THE PAINTED PEPPER:  One of The Big Ragu’s favorite trucks, this place makes a mean quesadilla.  Our big “must eat,” however is their wings.  Who knows what these cooks have in mind garlic-wise.  We are sure they will spice things up for the food truck rally!

Fried Mac & Cheese from Hunger Paynes

7) MOHAWK FREESTYLE GRILL:  Chef Aaron will unleash his Asian influenced “Garlic street rolls.”  Will he have his mouth watering burgers as well?  We think you can bet on it, so make sure you grab one !

8) LADDER 11 STREATERY: Jimmie’s Ladder 11 has some of the best menu items in Dayton.  We love their burgers and Tom Turkey sandwich.   the biggest must eat is their Ladder 11 sandwich.  As of last night, they were still working on a top secret garlic infused menu.  Stay tuned for the creative talents of the Ladder 11 family!

9) KOWALKSI HOTS:  Simple hot dogs, that pop when you bite them.  Called red hots or white hots, they are Upstate New York brands like Hoffmans, Zweigels and more.  You can’t find these anywhere else except upstate New York….  That is until now.  Get them coney style or with authentic Hoffman’s mustard form Syracuse.  Must eats are a Zweigels Red Hot with coney sauce and a Hoffmans White hot, with Hoffman’s mustard sauce.

The Onion Straw Burger from Horseless Buggy Eatery

10) HUNGER PAYNES:  The king of the local croquette, Andrew Payne has promised his Buckeye Chips will be at the rally.  We can’t wait to see his spin on garlic, or his old originals like the MUST EAT salmon croquettes and the Peanut Butter and Jelly balls.

11) THE HORSELESS BUGGY EATERY:  Is it the fish tacos or the onion straw burger that melted our hearts.  Or was it the Philly Cheesesteak?  All are MUST EATS  from these guys and are prepared to order, fresh..

12) THE HAMBURGER WAGON:  The double burgers are the MUST EAT here.  For over a century, the burgers have remain unchanged… will they doctor them up with garlic for the rally or will they stick with the legend between 2 buns?  Come find out !  We hope they mess with the century old recipe!

Go Cupcake will be at the rally Friday with their gourmet cupcakes!

13) GO CUPCAKE:  One of Dayton’s dessert faves, she will be bringing her creations to Bella Villa Hall.  Please try her inventive and addicting treats.  The MUST EAT is the peanut butter cup cupcake.  A work of art for the eyes and the tummy.  Indulge, go cupcake, it’s your burfday !

14) FRONANA: This new business uses all natural, frozen treat using flavored bananas.  The result is some of the best tasting, guilt free stuff in the USA.  Try the chocolate, our MUST EAT, and see if you don’t dance like Elvis eating a peanut butter and banana sandwich.  Just look for the guy in the bow ties scooping the tastes.

15) BELLA SORELLA PIZZA:  We are so excited to have this company at the rally.  The dough and ingredients are so fresh, Bella Sorella is some of the best pizza in the state.  The Italian club is the perfect backdrop for this pizza pie, straight from the authentic, on site Italian style oven.  We can almost smell the basil, tomatoes and … GARLIC!

What an incredible variety of fantastic Dayton foods.  What a collection of tastes ! DON’T MISS OUT !

Take some time Friday night and visit the SONS OF ITALY FOOD TRUCK RALLY.  Taste all the flavors within a few steps of each other.   There will be plenty of parking on site, and it promises to be a fun, laid back atmosphere.  The Food Adventures Crew of Hungry Jax, TheBig Ragu and Chef House are proud to be partners of the weekend festivities.  You can even play bocce ball on the open courts for$10 an hour !

Summer Grilling Tips for Great Food Adventures !

July 10, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Italian Seasoned Salmon, and Shrimp with Montgomery Inn BBQ Sauce

Who doesn’t love a good cookout?  Most Daytonians are elbow deep in grilling season this summer.  From parties, to romantic dinners or family time, this is the time of the year to use that gas or charcoal grill.  The Food Adventures Crew is here with some helpful tips to make your grilling experiences a success.  The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House share our MUST EATS an MUST DO’s.. Grilling out version!

— PREPARATION IS KEY:  Prepare beforehand to make it easy on yourself.  Marinade your meats and pre-slice veggies ahead of time instead of fumbling on the grill table.  Ziplock bags work great to hold veggies doused in a bit of olive oil, and grill ready!

— MARINATE YOUR MEAT: A simple soaking can do wonders for tenderness and flavor.

Hungry Jax says “Marinade chicken in buttermilk! It makes it so tender!”

Big Ragu loves using Soy Sauce, Worcester Sauce, and Minced Garlic mixture for a simple steak marinade.  For chicken, he uses a cheap bottle of Italian dressing or Olive Oil, Basil, Garlic Powder and Oregano.

Hand pressed patties from 80/20 Ground Chuck

— GET THE RIGHT TOOLS:  Make sure your tongs and flipper are long enough, and that they work correctly.  It will save you a few dropped sausages, or epic losses thru the grill grate.

— MEATS SHOULD BE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE WHEN GRILLING:  Take cuts of meat out of fridge 30 minutes prior to grilling, so they are not cold.  It won’t contaminate the meat! It will actually help you grill the meat more evenly.

— MAKE YOUR HAMBURGER PATTIES THINNER IN THE MIDDLE than the outside.  Always hand patty your burgers with fresh meat, and make them thinner in the center.   This is because the middle swells when you grill the burger.  This helps even the playing field, and prevents your burgers becoming undercooked meatballs.

— HIGH HEAT FOR STEAKS, ALWAYS:  Grill that steak and let it sit until that final flip.  The result is a juicy, seared steak with great grill marks.

Grilled Sausages with Beer Steamed Onions and Green Peppers

— FISH, THE LESS FLIPPING THE BETTER:   Cook fish about 75 percent then flip it once.  Let the grill do the work.  Wana see flipping seafood?  Go to Benihana…

— DRIZZLE LIME OR LEMON JUICE OVER SEAFOOD RIGHT AT THE END OF GRILL TIME:  This is always a  great finishing touch of flavor.

— GRILL SALAD:  Yes!  Chef House says, Grill salad! It doesn’t always have to be about meat.  Romaine, Belgium Endive and Radicchio are great together and hold up well on the grill. Wilt the greens and get some grill marks on there. Chop and toss with olive oil, vinegar and cheese.  Chef House suggests sherry vinegar or a sweeter white balsamic with bleu cheese. Fresh herbs are always a nice touch too.  Shout out to Miami Valley Spice Traders, who carries a great honey white balsamic vine

— GRILL PORTABELLA MUSHROOMS:

Chef House loves to marinate them overnight in orange juice, olive oil and garlic.  So easy, and her family’s favorite.

The Big Ragu uses Worcester sauce, soy sauce and garlic powder for his Portabella Mushroom Grill Marinade.

— GRILL ASAPRAGUS: The Big Ragu uses Olive Oil and Garlic Salt when grilling these sticks of love.

Grilled Zucchini and Yellow SquashThe Big Ragu uses Olive Oil and Garlic Salt when grilling these sticks of love.

Chef House marinates her asparagus overnight in her family favorite recipe of  orange juice, olive oil and garlic.  Is your mouth watering yet?

— GRILL PIZZA:  Hungry Jax loves this summer twist on the ole pizza pie.   Make sure you have a hearty crust.  Medium heat and inventive toppings are the key to pizza grilling  success !

— HAVE A LOCAL LUAU: Impress your family and friends this summer and have an entire grilled meal from local vendors.

Here are some supplier ideas from Chef House:

Keener Farms, one of the the area’s best butcher blocks for grass fed burgers and brats.

Ed Hill owner of Xenia’s HILL FAMILY FARMS has great Chicken available at Dorothy Lane Market.

KJB PORK, available at the  2nd street market.

Fresh veggies from Homefull, Patchwork Gardens or Flying Mouse. All of these local brands are found at area farmer’s markets.

— LEARN TO MAKE GREAT SAUCES: We love sauces to go along with grilled meat.  Chimichurri is a huge favorite of Chef House and so versatile.   Here is another tip from Chef House… www.Epicurious.com is a great site for new sauce recipes.

NY Strip Steak with Bleu Cheese Crumbles

— GRILL CORN IN THE HUSK:  Here is a quick, fun idea the kids and adults will love.  Get some fresh corn still in the husk, cut it at the tip.  Peel back and take out the silks. Pull the husk back up and soak in water for 20 minutes.  Throw them on the grill wet and watch them steam the corn on the grill.  Flip until the husks are brown on all sides, peel back and serve rustic style with salt and butter.

— OVERESTIMATE YOUR MEAT: Chef House says cook more meat than you need, so you have leftovers!  Especially chicken, which can be easily made into some delicious tacos the next day.

— BEER ISN’T JUST FOR DRINKING ANYMORE:  Get a tin pan, and pour in 1/2 of a beer.  Add some sausages and sliced peppers and onions and let steam on the grill.  Touch up the grill marks on the sausages just before you serve it.  Serve it with the steamed onions and peppers too, with or without a bun !  Now you’re a hero.

Dogs, Asparagus and Salmon

— THROW LIVE CLAMS ON THE GRILL:  Wana impress your friends easily?  Throw a dozen live clams on the grill.  When they open, they’re done.  It is that simple, but your friends with think it is pretty darn cool.

— HAVE A GLASS OF WATER NEARBY FOR FLARE UPS:  Just in case your juices or grease catch on fire, this keeps you and the fire, in control.

— SPARE PROPANE TANK:  Make sure you have an extra, FULL, propane tank on hand.  Nothing says “oh Sh*t” like an empty propane tank during grilling.  You never know when you are gonna run out, so don’t!  Keep a spare, full tank near to your grill, in cae you have to pull the “old switcheroo.”

— PLACE GRILLED FOOD INTO SEALED PLASTIC STORAGE CONTAINERS:  Especially at a cookout, flies tend to swarm to open plates of cooked meat.  The answer is get some plastic lid containers and seal the cooked meats inside.  Trust us, it works much better than fumbling with open plates and aluminum foil with open cracks.

Veggie Shish Kabobs

Filipino & Thai Food From Newest Food Truck

July 7, 2015 By Lee Anne House

FB_IMG_1436309475110Meet the next hot food truck, Asian Persuasion. They are having their debut night this Friday at the Night Market on July 10th at the Yellow Cab.

Just as the Urban dictionary defines the term Asian persuasion, these guys are full of swagger and confidence. They are stoked to introduce their creative blend of Filipino and Thai food.FB_IMG_1436309597396

The owners Jason and Scott have been friends for over 20 years and have been working on this food truck concept for nearly a year. Jason told us “The best part about starting this truck is I get to cook food passed down from generations of Filipino and Thai families. Every Filipino dish I cook was taught to me by my mother. Every Thai dish I learned from Scott and Inpanh who learned from their mothers. I look at this as an opportunity to share a little of our heritage with people and feed them the same things I feed my family at home. The food truck is just the beginning.”
FB_IMG_1436309470705You can expect to see the Filipino favorite Lechon this weekend. This is spit roasted pork that can be done boneless but still with the crispy skin everyone loves.

Food Adventures will also be at the Night Market. Come help them raise money for Homefull. You can buy a water balloon for $1 to throw at The Big Ragu, aka Steve Milano! Let’s hope it is hot outside!! Homefull is our local homeless advocacy group. They help find housing for individuals and families, learn life skills and job skills and even run a small farm with 150 raised beds. All proceeds will go to them.

This will also be the soft opening for Bad Dog. This is Dayton’s newest hot dog cart. Local grass fed beef from the Keener farm make up the dogs, buns from Ashley’s Pastry Shop in Oakwood and plenty of veggie toppings and sauces made by chef LeeAnne House. These are truly gourmet dogs!

The Night Market,  made up of farmers and locally made food, is held at the Old Yellow Cab building at 700 east Fourth Street. The market runs from 5-10pm,  under a large 60×40 foot tent. The rain won’t scare anyone away this weekend! There will be local beers available, live music and tons of local vendors for all kinds of shopping.

New York Weenies Invade Dayton

July 3, 2015 By Dayton937 1 Comment

John Kowalski Serving Upstate New York Style Hot Dogs

Reds, Whites and Burgs…

Timely colors for the 4th of July, yet these are the common call outs of the eats at Kowalski Hots, a Dayton area hot dog stand that sells hot dog brands, that are only found in upstate New York.

Only the Food Adventures Crew has the scoop on this unique, one of a kind, family owned business.. at least in Dayton it is unique.  In upstate New York, it would be a traditional and common favorite!

Do you know how tough it is to get these brands in Dayton, Ohio?  The answer, is you have to drive to Buffalo, Rochester or Syracuse, New York, yourself and get them, because that’s the only way they are coming here.

And that’s just what owner, John  Kowalski does.  He himself, or friends and relatives traveling back and forth get cases of his… well hot dogs in special casings… ironic, huh?  They even get the NY mustard too.  Authentic to the bone.  We have visited this hot dog cart at Menards on 741 or at area festivals a couple dozen times.  We are hooked.  We have even met his sister, Katrina, who was helping with the cart at various local festivals and food truck rallies.

In his upstate New York accent, John educates his customers about Red Hots, White Hots, and NY Coney sauce.  His long “aaa’s” are a distinct sound and make the experience even more authentic.  Now for the scoop on this Rochester native and his magical hot dog cart.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Hoffman’s White Hots on the Grill

— John Kowalski’s world was turned upside down by a stroke in March 2013.  Determined to make his Kowalski Hot’s vision come true, he persevered through 2013 and with God’s help, he was able to update the cart in 2014.  Today, he is in good health, and rockin’ the grill about 5 days a week.

— “HOTS” doesn’t mean heat or spicy, it is Upstate New York slang for Hot Dog… “BURGS” is short for hamburgers

— Kowalski’s hot dog cart can be found at Menards on 741 Wednesdays through Saturdays 11am – 2:30pm.  He is also at area festivals so make sure your check his Facebook page HERE.

— Using Evan’s Bakery and Dorothy Lane Market’s buns, Kowalksi Hots specializes in Hoffman brand hot dogs, Zweigel brand hot dogs and Sahlen’s brand from Buffalo.  He offers local burger meat and uses Jaworski brand, a Cleveland favorite for his Polish Kielbasa and Italian Sausages.

Let’s sort through the steaming weenies and find out which ones are the MUST EATS.. queue the fireworks…

MUST EATS:

— HOFFMAN’S RED HOT: Not hot or spicy, remember hot is just NY slang for hot dog.  These are German style hot dogs and more like the typical hot dogs we know here in Dayton.  Hoffman’s is a hot dog company out of Syracuse, New York since 1879 and is wildly popular up there.  These hot dogs use lamb casings.  This Red Hot is traditionally topped with Hoffman’s mustard (they have it) and onions… but make it your way, baby… Hot Dog !  Dont forget the bun is from Evan’s Bakery in Old North Dayton!

— HOFFMAN’S WHITE HOT: Nothing spicy – again hot means hot dog, but this is a white hot dog, and looks a lot like a skinny bratwurst.  The lamb casing on this gives a slight pop, when you bite into it.  It tastes a bit like a breakfast sausage, very mild.  The Big Ragu is weird with meat and even he likes it.  He doesn’t like brats and he eats this stuff.  In  Syracuse, they eat these with Hoffman’s Mustard, get some on the cart.

— SAHLEN’S BRAND FOOTLONG CONEY:  The footlong, oh yes.  This brand, Sahlen’s is famous and popular in Buffalo, NY.   Get one with coney sauce and load it up.  It will take you 2 hands to carry it around until you nibble to the halfway point.  Just a regularly flavored hot dog, but a damn good one.

Sahlen’s Footlong – just like they serve them up in Buffalo , NY

— KOWALSKI HAMBURG:  Served on a Dorothy Lane Market Kaiser Roll, this burger made our top list in Dayton.  A great burger, on a great bun, he even adds the “must eat” coney meat sauce on top of the patty.  Our secret – add relish and onions to the patty as well… result: AMAZING!

— ZWEIGEL’S RED HOT:  Plump and red in color, closer to what Daytonians know as a mild Metwurst. These are a little thicker and tend to split when you grill them.  Rochester native’s love that crunchy pop when you bite into them and traditionally serve them with Coney Meat sauce or just mustard, onion and relish.  You decide, we will take pictures.

Zweigels Red Hots and White Hots Splitting on the grill by themselves

— ZWEIGEL’S WHITE HOT: Most Dayton natives will think this is a Bratwurst.  Again, these split when you grill them and are typically served with meat coney sauce, or doctored up with mustard and other toppings. He serves them on the Evan’s Bakery rolls (Old North Dayton bakery).

Honorable Mention: THE WARRIOR PLATE:  Known as a “garbage plate” in some walks, this is a Rochester NY tradition.  It is macaroni salad, covered with either a burger or a red hot, and topped with coney meat sauce.  Are you hungry? Get one of these plates, named after John’s high school mascot.

A “Hamburg” at Kowalski Hots. Make sure you get the coney sauce on it !

COMING SOON:  You heard it here exclusively, they will soon feature a Beef on Weck with Au Jus.

UPDATE:

You can catch Kowalski Hots in Benham’s Grove at Americana festival July 4, 2015 all day.  He will also be at Garlic Fest, July 19th from noon-8pm at Sons of Italy’s Bella Villa Hall on County Line Rd.

Make sure you try some of these incredible whites and hots, when you are near Menards in Springboro/Miamisburg, or at  local food truck rally or festival.  The hot dogs are an inexpensive treat and the burger is fantastic too.  Take the opportunity to get a taste of what many will never taste, true Upstate New York Coneys.  Now, how much better does it get than that old school experience?

Cooking with Your Kids

June 25, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Just another cooking adventure with Coraline and Ashlyn!

Hey all! HUNGRY JAX here from the FOOD ADVENTURES CREW, with a feature geared towards Dayton area moms and dads (or Aunts and Uncles for that matter).

Summer is upon us! This means sunshine, pool and even more free time for your kids! Sunny days are easy for us to find things to do outdoors. But those days, where its just TOO hot or it’s a monsoon that has blown in, I find myself turning to my back up plans for activities indoors.  And that usually means you’ll find us in my kitchen making a delicious mess!

I have two fantastic daughters (yes, I may be biased but if you’ve met them, you’ll totally agree) ages 5 and 3. They love super heroes, bugs, princesses and legos. They are true mixtures of both my husband and I.  So when Coraline (my 5 year old) first asked me in that sweet little voice of hers at the age of 3 if she could help me cook, my foodie heart about exploded! My mind flooded with these picturesque scenes of my daughter and I laughing and singing in the kitchen as we created delicious memories together!

I instantly jumped at this chance to have her help me make something. Cookies. Cookies were clearly the easiest thing we cold make together. Chocolate chip to be exact. So I gathered all the ingredients and tools necessary, wrapped her up in an apron and began our first cooking adventure! Those daydreams of mine were about to become real!

And then things got real. Real messy. And chaotic. A THREE YEAR OLD? COOKING? AM I NUTS? Flour was everywhere (genius me had just cleaned the kitchen prior to this). She ate more ingredients than what she actually dumped into the bowl. She’s my first born, so clearly I was panicking that she would die from eating the raw dough. My anxiety was high. My blood pressure was higher. By some miracle we created a decent batch of cookies. After a bath for her, and a mopping of my kitchen, there were no traces of the disaster zone. It was after this experience that knew I needed to be better prepared for the next time this was going to happen.

The kids are now pros at making chocolate chip cookies!

So, after many kitchen creations since then, with Coraline , and now, her sister, Ashlyn (my 3 year old that insists on making her own scrambled eggs), I have come up with some key pointers to share with you all if you have yet to embark on a cooking food adventure with your kids!

 1. IT’S PEANUT BUTTER N JELLY TIME:

While cookies were a simple task for just me, add in a toddler and it was like trying to bake on a camping trip during the middle of a tornado. Starting out simple will help you gauge your child in how well they will listen in the kitchen setting. Have them make toast and let them butter it themselves. Or add the sprinkles on top of a cake. PB&J is a perfect option here. Obviously, if your child is older you can kick up the challenge, but when we are talking toddlers, ease into this. As they get older and better at this, let them start to choose ideas out of cookbooks for what to make. The more invested they are in what you are making, the more focused and committed they will be to creating the final product.

Own a Vacuum, or a dog in this case …

2. OWN A GOOD VACUUM.  OR A DOG:

There will be a mess. It’s impossible not to have a mess when cooking with kids! And you know what, the mess can be a lot of fun! I’ve found it helpful when I am making something that involves flour, I would let my kids play with an extra pile of it to occupy them while I cooked. Same thing with dough. They LOVE to roll out dough. Get small 6 inch long dowels and let them use that as their own rolling pins! As they feel more engaged and included they will begin to observe you. And one of the best ways to learn skills in the kitchen is to have a hands on experience! So, tossing flour and watching it disperse in the air or squeezing pizza dough to feel how to squishes and stretches helps your child not only have fun, but gain an understanding as to how things should look and feel when cooking.

3. OWN A FIRE EXTINGUISHER:

This one should be self explanatory. However, it is important to teach your children about safety in the kitchen, especially when using appliances and the stove. My kids were allowed to pull up a chair next to the stove and stand on it to observe me cooking before they were allowed to actually stir/make something using the stove. They learned how the gauges on the stove would indicate what burners are hot, and how to only hold the handle of the cooking vessel. Breaking down what would be common sense to an adult  into basic lessons is what a child needs to be successful in the kitchen

 4. DON’T CRY OVER SPILLED MILK:

Eggs will get dropped. Something will spill. Someone is going sneeze into the bowl of cookie dough. It happens. Sometimes it’s an easy clean up and fix, other times it’s something bad enough to have to start all over. Stay calm. It’s just food. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s just food. Freaking out and turning what could be an amazing memory into a memory of mom or dad hyperventilating and breathing into a brown paper bag isn’t what we are going for here.

Coraline at the age of 3 making sauce for the first time!

5. TAKE PICTURES:

My fondest memories of being a kid were cooking with my grandmothers and my dad. Memories that are forever branded in my mind. These days we have the gift of technology to instantly capture memories so that we can immortalize them and share them for generations to come. Take pictures. Lots of pictures.

Well foodie friends, I bid you good luck on your Food Adventures in the kitchen with your kids! Give it a chance. And then another. You’ll find what works for you and your children. It doesn’t have to go perfect. I promise you it won’t. But when you stop coloring within the lines you allow yourself to create a new picture. And it’ll be an awesome one.

MANGIA!

Cobblestone Cafe Quietly Reaches 15th Anniversary

June 19, 2015 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Baked Brie – served with crackers. A rare special at Cobblestone Cafe, but a MUST EAT !

This feature article is about a place that many Dayton area foodies have never visited.  But somehow, it remains very busy and this week is quietly completing its 15th year in business.  The Cobblestone Cafe, in Waynesville, has personality.  It is connected to a little home decor shop.  The cafe is a mom and pop version of ‘Cracker Barrel,’ but light years ahead.  The store is elegant meets antique, and the food is gourmet.   The laid back atmosphere is a perfect venue for chef creations is a quaint, cozy country atmosphere.  This article could just of easily been titled “The Coziest Cafe with Great Food that You’ve Never Been to.”  But alas, this is our Food Adventure mission.  To boldly go where no fork has gone before… and live to tell the tale, with killer pictures and tips from many experiences at a restaurant.  So join Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax as we explore one of the best kept secrets in the Miami Valley, The Cobblestone Cafe.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Cobblestone Cafe is a true “Mom and Pop” restaurant, owned locally by Rick and Brenda Weber for 15 years.  Currently, one of their sons, Ben, is a waiter as well.

Mushroom Ragu Crepes.. Did somebody say Ragu ?

— The cafe is located at 10 N. Main St. in Waynesville, and is tucked into shops in the downtown area.  The dining area is small, with the feel of home.

— Chef Jessica Livingston continues to impress with her menu.  Influences of French cuisine and country cooking are evident in standard dishes and specials.

— The cafe features a standard menu and daily specials.  Please note their hours are typically 11am – 4pm, and they are closed Mondays.

— On Sunday they offer a brunch, which is a one time only collection of 4 or 5 dishes available that day, along with the standard menu.  This is a great time to experience some of the more inventive creations of Chef Jess. (But they are closed Sunday for Father’s Day).

— The staff is friendly and helpful, from the first moment they serve you complimentary muffins, until your meal is finished with a complimentary Chai Tea.  The restaurant is very accommodating for kids.  A special shout out to the service staff Gabrielle, Ben and others who always make us feel like VIP’s.

The Lemon Herb Mahi Sandwich – get a fork !

Which menu items are the best? It  was tough to narrow the list down to a few choices, given the revolving menu and the new items we have eaten on Sunday brunches, but here goes.  Our patented MUST EATS for The Cobble Stone Cafe are as follows…

MUST EATS:

— BAKED BRIE: A rare special served sometimes on brunch days, this is one of the best appetizers we have ever eaten.  It is brie encrusted in a pastry and the melted cheese combo wakes up your taste buds like nothing else.  We beg them to make this a regular menu item, because it fits perfect in their cozy atmosphere.

— HONEY FRIED CHICKEN SALAD:  They feature their fried chicken on salads, sandwiches, waffles and by itself.  When you see the fried chicken as an ingredient at Cobblestone….. GET IT !  Irresistible and crunchy, it is magic on a plate.

— MUSHROOM RAGU CREPES: Crepes are a rare treat in Dayton, Ohio and these are rich, creamy and dreamy.  A tested creation, they have improved the recipe of this delicate and delicious meal.  Lose yourself in this plate.

— CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH: Simple huh?  Yes, and man is it good.  A filling, generous portion of Chicken Salad, that we suggest ordering on a croissant.  The soup and sandwich deal is pretty much a standard go to, and chicken salad leads the way !

— LEMON HERB MAHI on CIABATTA:  This is a tough one.. eat the sandwich, or fork it?  The Mahi Mahi is so good, it could easily stand by itself.  We find ourselves dissecting the sandwich with a fork and enjoying the Ciabatta top separately.

— CITRUS AHI KABOBS:    Perfectly seared and grilled, these skewers are seasoned with a perfect amount of lime juice and more.  We love their ahi appetizers as well.  This is another one of those rules of thumb at Cobblestone.  If you see Ahi tuna options, GET THEM !

— BRUNCH: Specialty items, and new inventions highlight every Sunday Morning.  A couple of the specials are usually breakfast foods, and a couple are lunch oriented.  Definitely worth checking out.

Honorable Mention: Vegetarians love the The Asparagus Sandwich and Cobblestone Cafe calls this their signature sandwich for the last 15 years. Also, the Zucchini Fritter appetizers are a good, unique way to start off the meal.

Everyone gets an “end of lunch Chai Tea,” compliments of the House !

So, Happy Anniversary Cobblestone Cafe and congrats on a great menu !  We can’t wait to see what the next 15 years has in store for local foodies.   Places like Cobblestone Cafe are a perfect example of why we write Food Adventure articles.  It is our opportunity to bring your attention to locally owned spots with terrific food, that you may not know about.  In a day where people are chasing the next grand opening, we wanted to let you know about an old standard, who is still pushing the envelope of taste after 15 years.

Thanks for reading this week’s feature.  We are not food critics eating a dish or two, in one visit and ranking a restaurant.  We are FOOD ADVENTURERS.  We are the real deal and visit a spot many times, before undertaking an article.  That way, we eat a huge variety of offerings, and don’t just list menu items or use stock photos.

Elvis Looking to Karate Kid Kick the Big Ragu

This Saturday, June 13th get your blue suede shoes and head to Miamisburg’s 5th Annual Rock N Green Tomato Festival.  There is gonna be Rock N Roll music all day long.  There is gonna be a 5k Walk/Run.  There is a Cornhole Tournament with a $250 first prize.  Oh, and there is going to be, our favorite… FOOD, including a Green Tomato Pie contest and a burger eating contest!

One of our favorite yearly festivals is the family friendly Rock N Green Tomato Festival held in Miamisburg.  A laid back atmosphere with plenty of vendors and activities, featuring great live bands.  And as always, admission is FREE !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— WHEN: The Rock n Green Festival runs Saturday, June 13th from 11am -11pm

— WHERE: The event takes place at Riverfront Park in Miamisburg, which is the field behind Ron’s Pizza in downtown Miamisburg

— Live Rock n Roll All Day Featuring “The Rejects” (America’s favorite kazoo band) and an Elvis impersonator witha 14 piece Las Vegas Style Band.

— There will be craft vendors and food vendors throughout the park

Green Tomato and Bacon Pizza from Ron’s

— Yours Truly, The FOOD ADVENTURES CREW will be judging the Green Tomato Pie Contest (signup here) and picking out the winners around 5:00pm.

Lots of food to sort through and we are gonna give you the inside scoop on the best eats at the 2015 Rock N Green Tomato festival.  Or as we call it our patented MUST EATS!

MUST EATS:

— THE FRIED GREEN TOMATOES:  Miamisburg Athletic Boosters have been selling these for years.  They are a must eat, and the crispiest, most delicious bites of the festival.

— GREEN TOMATO PIE:  You don’t like green tomatoes?  Wait a minute, do you like apple pie?  Then you will love this stuff. Keep an open mind and don’t go all “little emperor” on us, and we bet you like it.  The ladies selling these pies do a terrific job, so grab a piece of the cinnamon goodness, sit next to Elvis and enjoy.

Fried Green Tomatoes – a MUST EAT !

— HAMBURGER WAGON:  Get the legend between 2 buns here.  It’s with a pickle, salt, pepper and onion because this icon “dont need no stinkin’ condiments.”  There is also a Hamburger Wagon Burger eating contest that usually takes place around 2pm.

— RON’S GREEN TOMATO AND BACON PIZZA:  One of the staples at the festival, and a fun treat for kids.  Pizza never looked so colorful.  The soft tomatoes and the bacon make for the perfect texture and crunch.

— RON’S BACON and GREEN TOMATO SANDWICHES: New to the festival this year !  Call it the festival version of a BLT, and a MUST EAT !  Another magical creation from Ron’s Pizza.

— WALT’S GREEN TOMATO SALSA: Special batches made just for the Rock N Green Tomato festival.  This salsa is packed with flavor and of course, green tomatoes.  Yet another great salsa option with Walt’s signature taste and recipe !

There is so much more food to try including food trucks and vendors, so explore the grounds and your taste boundaries!

Don’t “no show” this festival !  Instead, hike around the grounds and enjoy the food and the music.  Heck, toss a few cornhole bags while you are there.

This festival packs in more food and fun than most.  One of the most welcoming, inviting festival atmospheres it is great for the whole family.  Pay homage to the Green Tomato, this Saturday !  It promises to be one heck of a FOOD ADVENTURE !
