Dayton Dining

From Cuba,with Lime

July 11, 2016 By Brian Petro Leave a Comment

They are all ready and waiting…

July 11th is National Mojito Day and a perfect time to revisit this article, originally posted in July 2012.  Cheers!

It is getting warmer, and that means things will be changing soon in the Miami Valley. If the weather is even a little warm or a little sunny, we will wear shorts and flip flops. We are all getting very distracted at work by the lovely days that we could be out enjoying the fine weather instead of being behind a desk. Lawns need mowing, cars need washing, and our closets are shedding all of their winter clothes in preparation for warmer times. Patios are also opening up across the city, and cocktails are being served on them to many very relaxed patrons.  We start to gravitate to lighter and fruitier flavors, or anything frozen. There is one perennial that appears again when the spring and summer months roll around. It was born on a tropical island, and its combination of citrus, sweetness, and fresh mint never fails to bring us back there. The mojito is a staple on any patio in the country, and one of the few cocktails we have a fairly accurate history of.

The base of the mojito goes back as far as 1586. From a practical perspective, Sir Francis Drake’s raid on Havana that year for gold was a huge disaster. From a drinker’s perspective, it was the beginning of summer cocktail season. One of his associates mixed a drink with aguardiente (a very early and raw form of rum, loosely translated to “fiery water”), lime, sugar and mint. It was called “El Draque” (the Drake or dragon, since the Cubans were not fans of Sir Francis); the addition of the extra ingredients was to cover the harsh nature of the liquor. It continued its evolution in the fields of Cuba. The people working the fields would crush up the sugar cane and extract a very sweet liquid from it, which they called guarapo. That sweet liquid was a staple of the workers and the base of a new spirit, rum.

Rum is really the only thing that changed “El Draque” into the mojito. The other ingredients did not change, but the switch to rum also changed the people that drank it. It moved from the fields of Cuba to the patios. It became more refined, and evolved into a drink that Cuba started to be known for.  It was first recorded as a mojito in a drink manual from a bar named Sloppy Joes in 1931.  This was during Prohibition, when the nearest bars in Florida were in Cuba. This attracted sort of a cocktail tourism, and people started to discover the joys of rum cocktails. From Sloppy Joe’s it moved over to a bar named Bodeguita del Medio, which became THE place to get mojitos during the 20’s and 30’s. Ernest Hemmingway (more of a daiquiri man) was once quoted as saying “My mojitos at La Bodeguita. My daiquiris at El Floradita.” During this time, the cocktail picked up a few modern conveniences: “charged” water (soda) and ice. Both of these items were in very short supply in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There is some evidence the ice was added a little earlier, but we know that both were part of the drink when it migrated, post-Prohibition, to the United States.

1939 World’s Fair, thank you for the drink

The mojito made its grand entrance to the United States at the New York World’s Fair in 1939 as the featured drink at the Cuban pavilion. It spread like wildfire through the U.S., becoming a hugely popular drink in bars all over the country. It was fresh, it was foreign, and people were enamored with the unique flavor. At least, it was popular until the 60’s. It was about that time that processed juices and other beverages became more fashionable to use as mixers, and technology trumped fresh juices and ingredients. The drink was pushed aside by the Long Island iced tea and the mai tai. It was not revived until the craft movements of the 80’s when beers and fresh ingredient cocktails came back into vogue, and processed cocktails started to share the limelight again with smaller cocktails from a long forgotten period. The resurrection continued into the 90’s. Latin food became quite the culinary fashion. During the height of the popularity of the cosmopolitan-driven series Sex and The City, The Los Angeles Times referred to the mojito as “a cosmo for the more adventurous”. And with its light and crisp flavor, they were not entirely wrong. It’s final step back onto its original throne was James Bond having one in “Die Another Day”, offering Halle Barry one as well.  Now it is considered one of the top classic cocktails in the country, right along with the mai tai and Long Island iced tea. It is another cocktail that made Imbibe’s list of most influential cocktails of the century.

It is influential for a reason. Rum is a naturally sweeter liquor, and holds together the tartness of the lime and the bite of mint together in a very refreshing manner. It is simple enough to make in any bar or home, and during the warm spring and summer months it is incredibly refreshing. If you are looking for the best place in Dayton to find one, El Meson was an overwhelming favorite in an impromptu poll. Sidebar 410 and Meadowlark were also mentioned, as well as the kitchen of Superfry! If there are other places you feel make remarkable mojitos, let us know in the comments section. If you are going to make it at home, here is the traditional recipe.

Mojito baby picture

Mojito

2 sprigs of young mint
1 oz. of simple syrup
.75 oz. of fresh lime juice
1.5 oz. of light rum (Bacardi is an excellent choice)
2 dashes of Agonstura bitters (optional)
1.5 oz. club soda

In the bottom of a glass, lightly muddle the leaves off one sprig of the mint leaves in the simple syrup and lime juice. You want to press out the mint oil from the leaves without tearing them up, as this might bring some bitterness to the drink. Add the rum (and the bitters, if you choose to), ice, and the club soda, and stir. The other lime sprig is for garnish.

El Draque grew into one of the most recognized drinks of the world. Over the 400 years the cocktail has been in existence it has changed little, but maintained a following, sometimes large, sometimes only for the adventurous. Light and refreshing, it is a perfect warm weather drink. Cheers!

Belgium by the Pint and Plate: The Belgian Ale and Food Festival

July 11, 2016 By Kevin Gray

IMG_0610Belgium comes to Dayton on July 30th with the 5th annual Belgian Ale and Food Festival (BAFF). Arguably one of the most underrated beer fests in the Gem City, this high-end festival pairs some of the best Belgian and Belgian-style beers in the world with quintessentially Belgian dishes in the beautiful 1920s setting of the Miami Valley Golf Club. Explore the wooden walls of the grand ballroom while quaffing a St Louis Fond Tradicion Geuze paired with Roast Lemon & Rosemary Chicken. Or, if you want something heftier, how about a St. Bernardus Barrel Aged ABT 12 with a beefy, carmalized Carbonnades Flanandes? Go classic by pairing a saison with Moules Frites, Belgian steamed mussels and fries. And sample the best local interpretations of Belgian styles with beers from Toxic, Warped Wing, 5th Street Brewpub, Eudora, Yellow Springs Brewery, and Dayton Beer Company.

Founder Jule Rastikis and Treva Jenkins

The BAFF is the brainchild of Jule Rastikis and is a fund-raiser for Salem Avenue Peace Corridor, a neighborhood non-profit with the goal of revitalizing the Salem Avenue area. Rastikis, a local entrepreneur and the president of the Peace Corridor project, is passionate about reestablishing Salem Avenue and the adjacent neighborhoods as a thriving community. In the group’s mission statement, they draw upon the United Nation’s definition of peace, calling for “a vitalization effort to intentionally cultivate our Shared Destiny of safety, prosperity, a great quality of life, and a strong spirit of community.”

Rastikis is a bona fide beer geek who, five years ago, realized the craft beer renaissance was leaving Dayton’s west side largely behind, despite the region’s stabilization and its nascent revitalization efforts. Rastikis wanted to share the vision of his neighborhood and was motivated by “getting people to cross the bridge.” Channeling Kevin Costner in Field Of Dreams, Rastikis explains that, “If you do the right event, people will come.” He wanted to prove that he could draw attendees from more than just the immediate area, and has been overwhelmingly successful. Attendees from each of the last four events have come from 25 different ZIP codes.

PicsArt_1405260176148As for why Belgian beer? “Because that’s what I like,” quips Rastikis, adding that “no one else is doing it.” His love for all things Belgique began with a Beer Bon Voyage trip through the country, where he and his wife sampled beers from monasteries and centuries-old breweries. An evangelist for the beers, Rastikis has lined up a tasting list that includes the best of Belgian styles (including Piraat, one of his favorites) and foods that accentuate the beers. Attendees can also purchase raffle tickets for the Holy Grail of Belgian beers, a beer package that includes brews from nine Trappist breweries: Spencer, Gregorgius, Achel, Chimay, Rochefort, LaTrappe, Orval, Westmalle, and Westvleteren. (The raffle includes the highly sought after and hard to obtain Westie 12). The event also offers attendees the chance to experience Rastikis’ life-changing trip for themselves—the purchase of a ticket enters the ticketholder into a drawing for a Belgian beer cruise, with airfare for two from New York, this October.

The event takes place Saturday, July 30th from 4-7 pm at the Miami Valley Golf Club (3311 Salem Avenue Dayton, OH 45406). The event is limited to 200 people, so get tickets early or risk the event being sold out. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased online at www.daytonbaff.com. For more information about the Salem Avenue Peace Corridor, visit their website at www.peacecorridor.com.

BEER! A Celebration of Dayton Brewing is Back

July 9, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

BeerHeralded by Paste Magazine as one of the country’s most underrated beer destinations, the third annual BEER! A Celebration of Dayton Brewing is set for Saturday, July 16 at The Yellow Cab from 1-5pm.

“It’s crazy to think that four years ago Dayton didn’t have a single operating brewery,” Brian Johnson, Organizer said. “Even more amazing is the quality of all of breweries that have popped up since then. Whether you like hoppy, dark, experimental or a more traditional style, it’s being brewed here and it’s being brewed well.”

Each ticket for BEER! is good for a 13 – 6oz pours and serves as your vote in the coveted “Dayton’s Best Brewery, People Choice Awards.”  Defending champs  Hairless Hare Brewery  beat out  2014 years champ, Fifth Street Brewpub, by just 7 votes. The beers the winning Vandalia brewery served up were Hoppicrisy Session IPA 5.2 ABV,  IBU 64 and Strawberry Saison ABV 7.7,  IBU 19. Can’t wait to see what they come up with this year. Springboro’s Crooked Handle will be a new addition to this years competitors.  Read more about last years event here.

“It’s fun to see what people are up to,” Johnson said. “There are a number of brewpub favorites showcased, but there have also been a few surprises just for this event.”

BEER! is about more than just great local suds though, with live music, food trucks and an official after party at Yellow Cab.  Participating breweries for BEER! include all 13 Dayton local breweries. All breweries are subject to change.

For those interested in attending BEER! A Celebration of Dayton Brewing, the event takes place on Saturday, July 16 from 1-5pm and is $25 in advance and $30 at the doors with $5 designated driver tickets available. Tickets can be purchased at all Dayton local breweries and online. This event is 21 and up only.

Thursday Night Throwdown-Dayton launches Monthly Barista Competition

July 6, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

latteIf you’re a barista then the Third Thursday of every month is now your day to throwdown and show what you’ve got! Dayton now has it’s own regional barista competition, starting on Thursday, July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee and taking place at a different location on the third Thursday of each following month.

“We have so many talented baristas around the Miami Valley,” Henry Dean, Boston Stoker Coffee Company President said. “Thursday Night Throwdown is a great way for us to show off all of our local talent and also push each other with a little friendly monthly competition.”

The first Thursday Night Throwdown will focus on latte art. For only $2 baristas can enter in and showcase the best of that their steady hands and unbridled imaginations can create.

“Latte art has become very popular so I’m excited to see what Dayton’s baristas can do,” Shane Anderson, Ghostlight Coffee Owner said. “The winner gets all of the collected entry fees but really this is more about getting together and growing a community.”

After July, Thursday Night Throwdown will take place at changing coffeehouses each month to limit any perceived, “home field advantage.”

“I’m excited to host the first one,” Anderson said. “We want to be seen as a relaxed, neighborhood coffeehouse, but there’s also a very artistic side to what we’re doing. I think this is a great chance to revel in that a little more.”

For those interested, Thursday Night Throwdown takes place on the third Thursday of every month. Locations and times vary. The kickoff event takes place on July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee from 6-9pm and is a latte art competition. Entry is $2 and winner takes all.

Dive Bar Tuesday – Mack’s Tavern

June 28, 2016 By Brian Petro

Welcome to Mack’s Tavern!

Scouting locations for Dive Bar Tuesday is usually pretty straight forward. We listen to the readers, make lists, and visit the sites as time allows. More often than not when we arrive, there is no doubt we are going to a dive bar. The location is small and usually hidden, there is not lots of light, and the people we see know each other. The first one we attended, Miami Valley Sports Bar, was the only venue we visited where we started to question if it had jumped to the next level. There was good food, plenty of room, and they were in the process of expanding and making the place better. Is there an upper ceiling to what can be considered a dive bar? Where does “dive bar” end and “nice place to go for a night out” begin? This conversation continued even as we walked into Mack’s Tavern, ready to get some drinks and have some of their delicious pizza.

12140638_907156022652763_7222387680784579725_nMack’s Tavern (381 Miamisburg Centerville Rd, Washington Township, OH 45459, (937) 813-7217) failed the first test of what we have come to expect from a dive bar: difficult to find. It is just sitting there next to Big Lots on Miamisburg Centerville Rd., begging for you to pull up and visit. The place is well lit too. Not too bright, because no one wants that in a bar, but just enough light to see the vintage décor on the walls and the games that are lined up and waiting for you to play. There are still some nooks and crannies you can scurry off to for a private discussion or a first date, but the floor is set up, so it is easy to meet people. That is not by accident. MacKenzie Manley, the owner of Mack’s, wants people to come in as strangers and leave as friends. If that is something I have written before, there is a reason. It is one of the charms of the dive bar. Or, if you want to be politer with the naming, the neighborhood bar. It is working. Everyone was chatting and having fun. And MacKenzie knew every regular.

We could not even fit the food into the frame.

We could not even fit the food into the frame.

If you have not heard of MacKenzie, it is possible you have not been near a computer for a very long time. MacKenzie won the first annual Bloody Mary Showdown with a Barbecue Burger Bloody Mary. Media monolith BuzzFeed picked up a story about the tavern leaving coupons on cars left overnight for responsible drivers. She was a bartender at the Pour Haus for years and was voted one of the top dive bars in the city in her first year of operation. She understands both sides of the bar business: making great drinks and providing a comfortable environment for the patrons who show up. She was inspired by the venerable Cubby Hole and the Pour Haus from years gone by. Does your company need a place to have a lunch meeting? Call Mack’s. Do you want to throw that big party for the holidays, or maybe a small class get-together? Call Mack’s. Did your plans at a different bar in the city fall through? Call Mack’s. Talking with her, exploring the space, you start to wonder if you can call this a dive bar, or are we in a whole different place? This is a dive bar. MacKenzie was emphatic about it.

Their menu is filled with food and drink delicious options. Just recently she added ten more specialty pizzas and wings to go with the sandwiches and meal-sized plates of Mack and Cheese. There are many beers on tap and bottles she offers, and all of them at a reasonable price. Good luck finding any beer over $4 (but they do pop up from time to time). They offer cocktails as well, which they are happy to create to your taste. They do have some standards that they will pour for you, but for the most part that menu is a bespoke one. And after a meal and some drinks here, your wallet will not feel that much lighter. The philosophy that drives the atmosphere at Mack’s is that she wants you to have a good time without breaking the bank. The inexpensive menu and the really friendly workers there ensure that the experience will be a pleasant one. They have thought it out right down to the restrooms, which may be the cleanest, most attractive ones I have seen  in a while.

12472253_1020706721325808_2737119766153542610_nWhen you head into Mack’s Tavern, you are heading into one of the best dive bars Dayton has to offer. From their mascots Chewy the Boar and MacKenzie’s pit bull Haze to the one-of-a-kind signs on the wall, you are going to have a unique experience. They offer pool and darts for entertainment on a daily basis with Monday being reserved for karaoke and Thursday being a trivia night. And come football season, have no doubt, this bar cheers for the Steelers. It is a dive bar by design, and the lead architect has done an excellent job. Head into the easy to find, spacious bar and spend the night enjoying the food, the beverages, and the fact you are likely to leave with more friends than you had heading in. And leave your car if you had a little too much to drink. They will take care of that, too.

Zombie Dogz Finally Admits To Brown Street Location!!!!

June 27, 2016 By Guest Contributor

ZOmbiedogzHello everybody, there are a few things that we would like to tell you all. We’re expecting our second child soon and with that being said we will not be operating the truck very much after the month of July. We will still be doing a couple events and bigger festivals that we’ve done yearly. After this season we will be shutting the truck down except for festivals and a few other events.

It’s also come to our attention that there’s rumors going around of us opening up a brick and mortar restaurant. And we have been telling everyone that it’s not true. Well it is in fact true. We will be opening up our first actual restaurant hopefully in September. We’ve been trying to keep it a secret and we just can’t keep it from you all anymore. The restaurant will be located at the corner of Brown and Stewart in the UD area. It’s the old Shish Wraps location. So there might be a gap from us being in the truck and us opening the restaurant. We need time to hire a few more people, train, and open the store up. We look forward to starting a new chapter, we just want to say thank you all for believing in us and always being there with the constant love and support.

We will be hiring more employees when the time gets closer. So if you have experience and would like to join the team please let us know. We will start accepting applications when we’re closer to opening.

as posted on Zombie Dogz facebook page!

2nd Street Market Partners with Homefull For Fresh Local Food Options

June 24, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

SNAPNearly 30 vendors at the 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton, now accept SNAP/food assistance Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) tokens thanks to a partnership with Homefull, a nonprofit organization working to end homelessness. Participating vendors offer fresh food items, such as produce, dairy products, meat, specialty foods and bread.

This new partnership addresses a significant community need: According to Homefull and area news outlets, 23 percent of households in the Dayton area struggle with food hardship — the fourth highest rate in the United States. When compared to the rest of Ohio, Montgomery County has a higher proportion of residents who receive public benefits yet a lower number of SNAP/EBT and WIC-authorized vendors.
“The 2nd Street Market helps Five Rivers MetroParks serve as the region’s conservation leader by providing our community convenient access to local food, which is less taxing on the environment and often healthier,” said Market Manager Jimmy Harless. “This partnership with Homefull helps the Market provide new customers with more options for stocking their kitchens with locally grown and produced food.”

The partnership is funded by a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture aimed at increasing SNAP/EBT redemption at farmers markets in Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties.

Also new at the 2nd Street Market on Saturdays, Homefull Solutions will sell fresh produce grown by clients at its microfarm, located on the grounds of the men’s Gateway shelter on Gettysburg Avenue. Homefull Solutions also operates a community supported agriculture (CSA) program and The Market at Wright Stop Plaza.

“We’re excited to make it more convenient for our clients and the community to purchase fresh, healthy, local produce,” said Tina Patterson, Homefull’s chief executive officer. “This partnership also provides our clients with access to paying jobs, teaches them productive skills through meaningful activity and improves self-esteem.”
The 2nd Street Market is open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 40 vendors offer such kitchen staples as bread, milk, cheese, meats, oils, flour and more. The Market was named Best Farmers Market on the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Best of Ohio Readers’ Ballot from Ohio Magazine. The list of winners was generated by votes cast by Ohio Magazine’s website visitors each fall. Learn more about the 2nd Street Market at metroparks.org/localfood.

Your Uniquely Shaped Cheeto Could Make You The Big Cheese

June 23, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

cheetosDo you stare at clouds and see clowns  or superheros in the lines of the marble on the floor?    Are you one of those highly imaginative people who’s seen Mr. T or the Pope in your toast?  Well, Frito-Lay’s latest consumer-engagement contest might of interest to you!

This summer, the online Cheetos Museum is taking online submissions from people who believe they have spotted a unique Cheetos shapes, ones resembling famous landmarks or people, or animals or objects.

Through Aug. 15, U.S. fans 13 and older can submit a photo of their special Cheetos shapes, along with a title and description of the snack piece, at CheetosMuseum.com.

Entries will be judged weekly based on visual interest, “buzzworthiness” and creativity. Each week for 10 weeks, one winner will be awarded a $10,000 prize and have his/her work featured on the “museum” site and in a real-life exhibit later this summer. Consumers will then vote from among the four weekly winners with the highest scores to determine a grand prize-winner, who will receive an additional $50,000, as well as glory on the site.

Other promotional videos — also featured on the contest site — show kids and adults proudly displaying Cheetos shaped like Abraham Lincoln, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Statue of Liberty, among other familiar images.

And don’t even think about using Photoshop to create your Cheeto shape. The official rules warn that if the sponsor determines that a photo was manipulated, the entrant/finalist will be disqualified, even if already announced as a winner.

Cheetos is also running an instant-win game in which paperboard replicas of Cheetos shaped like landmarks, animals, people or things have been seeded among specially marked packages; and a sweeps that is entered by sharing a Cheetos snack image on your Facebook or Twitter account and filling out a registration form.

Who’s Your Boo? Boosalis Baking & Cafe !

June 23, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Matt Boosalis, the friendly owner

Where is it? What’s the name again?  It is Boosalis Baking and Cafe and it is in the shops of Cross Pointe Center in Centerville.  If you go there once, you won’t forget this place.  We have been spreading the word for weeks now about this cafe.  Not only do they have delicious, sophisticated baked goods, but their sandwich menu is excellent as well.  It is the perfect place for a Food Adventure.

We were first introduced to the friendly owners of  Boosalis Bakery  at the “Night Market” at 700 East 4th St. at the old “Yellow Cab Building.”   They were selling delicious breads and gave us a great “end of the night deal.”  The breads were delicious and we never forgot them.

The Cranberry Turkey – the best turkey sandwich ever

Then as fate would have it, our new friend and American Idol star, Alexis Gomez asked us to meet her there for lunch… and the rest is a love story.  Boy meets croissant, and girls meet pastries.  Alexis was right, this place is unbelievable.

So let’s get the scoop on this little-known spot for scones and more…

The Pecan Roll

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— This bakery opened 8 years ago, but has been at 175 E Alex Bell Rd #280, in Cross Pointe Center since August 2014.

— Boosalis Baking & Cafe is open Tues – Fri 7am – 4pm and Sat. 8am-5pm

— Owner Matt Boosalis gets up at 3am each day to prepare the bakery’s old world menu.  He is very knowledgeable and constantly taking new classes and traveling to learn European pastry techniques.

The Kouign Amann Pastry – you dont know what youre missing

— The bakery prides itself on doing things the traditional way, from scratch. They are a throwback to the times of local neighborhood bakeries around the corner, using family recipes and time-honored baking traditions.

— The only fat they use in their recipes is from butter.

It is obvious that the people in this organization know what they are doing.  The clean atmosphere, is a welcoming invite to the

The Cross Pointe Chicken Panini – (tip: we substitute Turkey instead)

fantastic food.  But which foods are the best?

Food Adventures has the list in our “MUST EATS” for Boosalis Bakery ….

We have put in our research over the many trips to this Cross Pointe eatery, and here are the results:

MUST EATS:

— THE CRANBERRY TURKEY SANDWICH:  The Big Ragu will go on record saying this is the best turkey sandwich in town.  The

Strorefront in Cross Pointe Center off Alex Bell

bread makes all the difference.  Sliced turkey, piled high with lettuce and mayo.  Simple, yet remarkable.  The home made cranberry bread make the sandwich taste like a fluffy dream.

— THE KOUIGN AMANN PASTRY: You are going to start hearing about these “up and coming” trendy pastries soon.  Pronounced “Queen amann,” they are  a buttery croissant served like a cupcake.  Popularized in Breton, France, these delicate morsels pack a buttery, flavorful punch.  These pastries are one of the best things we have ever tasted.

Incredible Croissants and Cinnamon Rolls

— THE CROSS POINTE CHICKEN PANINI:  Warm, cheesy, toasted goodness with turkey, mozarella, and red peppers with a zip of pesto mayo.   At $6.95 it is a great deal and a very filling portion.  We found ourselves very quiet, as everyone ate this sandwich.  It is the kind of panini that you take a bite and it is so good you close your eyes. ** Here is a secret tip, substitute TURKEY for chicken, we think it is better .. just sayin…

— THE CROISSANTS: We could eat 6 of these huge croissants.

Food Adventure Lunch with American Idol Star Alexis Gomez and her family !

Very French, very old school, they remind us of the croissants we have eaten in Toronto,  Canada.  Curiously buttery tasting and delicious, these are definitely a nod to traditional croissants.

— ARTISIAN BREADS: We loved the French Bread and the Ciabatta most.  Amazing what a slice with a little butter and 10 seconds in the microwave can do to your tastebud’s world.  Great stuff, great prices and made from scratch.

We wish they all could be California … salads ….

— THE CALIFORNIA SALAD:  Healthy does of greens with madarin oranges and cranberries.  A truly unique and refeshing salad if there ever was one.  the balsamic vinegarette dresing is the perfect topping and the feta cheese is the perfect finish.  California here we come !

— PECAN ROLL:  Owner Matt Boosalis says these are best fresh, but we found a couple days later, 10 seconds in the microwave

Some of the best breads in the biz

and they taste fresh again.  At any rate, they probably wont last a couple days, they are that good.  A sticky, nutty taste that is finger licking material.

— THE TUSCANY PANINI:  It starts with homemade French bread.  Then they add Salami, Ham, Mozzarella, Roasted Red peppers and Basil Mayo.  Served toasted as a gooey, specialty panini.  Are you

The Tuscan is full of meat for you carnivores

kidding me?  A huge sandwich for around 7 bucks.  Get your butt to Boosalis Baking & Cafe, you wont regret experiences like these.

All in all, we were very impressed with Boosalis Bakery.  The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is a small deli, with limited seating.  Still it is a fun, cozy place.  Most importantly the food is this incredible homemade menu and the prices are right.  We hope to see more people discover them like we did.  We know we will be back again and again,

Who is your boo? Boosalis of course !

and you will too !  This is what Food Adventures is about at its core.  Finding little known gems, and exposing them to the masses.

Look for our feature articles right here, every week, on Dayton Most Metro.  Food info you can take as legit, because we are so thorough.

Just anothr rock start lunch at Boosalis !

Corner Kitchen Adds Grab & Go Lunch

June 22, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

-4The Oregon District’s hottest new eatery launches lunch to go today. It’s a clever way to extend Corner Kitchen’s audience, without having to deal with service, scheduling and other challenges of lunch at a fine dining restaurant.  Lunch will be available Tuesday through Saturday from 11am – 2pm.
Glancing at the menu, there are a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches and sides items to choose from in a very affordable $6-8.50 price range.   Beverages including soda’s, tea  and Elderflower Tonic are also available. According to their website, they’ll even  deliver box lunches to businesses and organizations downtown and nearby, though there is no mention of cost for delivery.

While the entrance to the restaurant is on the corner of Fith and Wayne, lunch boxes will be served out of a side entry on Wayne Avenue, next to Sew Dayton.  Looking forward to picking up lunch soon! Here’s a look at the menu, an art piece of its own, created by Marysa Justine.
