New Michael Moore Film Now Playing at THE NEON!

We just opened a documentary that is insightful, optimistic and terribly funny – Michael Moore’s WHERE TO INVADE NEXT. Knowing Moore’s work, you might look at the title and feel as though you already know where this film is going…but it’s actually quite a different tone (more below). In addition, we’re holding ANOMALISA as well as the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS (we’ve even brought back the documentaries for a few screenings). On February 19, we will open the new highly-anticipated Maggie Smith film – THE LADY IN THE VAN.

“The Junior Leaguers Club of Dayton will sponsor a screening of OPPOSITE FIELD on March 5, 2016 at Noon. This is the club’s fifth annual fundraiser at THE NEON, and this movie is a classic underdog sports story about an Ugandan Little League team. This documentary is inspiring and will have the audience displaying a wide range of emotions as the team makes history as the first African team hosted by the Little League World Series. This is a great film for adults and our youth. The funds raised will go into the Junior Leaguers Club scholarship fund. The tickets are $30 for adults (which include movie, glass of wine, glass of soda, and popcorn) and $15 for students (which include soda and popcorn). Tickets can be purchased at THE NEON. The ReelAbilities Film Festival is happening at numerous venues around Cincinnati, but one special screening is coming to Dayton on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 – ON BEAUTY. “Rick Guidotti, who after 15 years of working for clients such as Yves Saint Laurent, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar, grew tired of seeing the same ideal of beauty ‘spit up at us constantly.’ In a moment of serendipity, Rick walked by a young woman with Albinism at a New York City bus stop, and wondered why she wasn’t considered beautiful in his other world. Free Summer Party Downtown
The Dayton Metro Library is inviting the whole community to a Summer Party. There will be free entertainment, games, contests and hands-on activities for the whole family on Saturday, August 9, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Main Library and in Cooper Park, downtown Dayton.Chuck Duritsch from the Dayton Metro Library says, “We want to celebrate not only our summer readers who worked hard and met their goals, but also have a fun afternoon for everyone!”
What’s in store?
Visit the Technology Petting Zoo to see the latest gadgets, then pet puppies from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Make your own cotton candy, then ride a blender bike and make a smoothie. Time the Rubik’s Cube champ, learn break dancing skills from Deja Kru, and meet a young Yo-Yo Master. Book swaps, henna tattoos, physical challenges, chess games, storytimes, oh my! There’s too much to mention. Suffice it to say there are activities throughout Cooper Park and inside the Main Library as well – plenty for adults and children to have a fun, free afternoon. Food vendors will be on hand for the purchase of food and beverages, but all other activities (from the Active Zone to the Zoot Theatre puppets) are FREE.
“This is a chance for families to come together for a fun, free event to celebrate the summer,” said Diane Farrell, Director of External Relations for the Library. It’s such a different experience.”
Brown wanted to do a culinary variety show in the style of “The Carol Burnett Show,” “The Smothers Brothers” and “Sonny and Cher,” 
all of which he enjoyed growing up in the 1970s. Bringing back the kind of clever songs and comedy skits of those shows was his goal. As was being part of it. “I like to sing and play the guitar,” Brown said. All the music in the show is original, including songs “The Meat Goes On,” “Airport Shrimp Blues” and “TV Cookin Ain’t Like No Other Cookin.”

A&E on a Budget: UD Presents Free Arts Performance
The University of Dayton will be taking over the Schuster Center on Tuesday, April 5th, for their annual Celebration of the Arts performance. Where else can you experience eighteen different arts ensembles in under 2 hours? And even better – it’s free!
The evening will feature performances by University of Dayton music, theater and dance students as well as visual arts displays in the lobby. Burt Saidel, arts reviewer for The Oakwood Register, and Georgie Woessner, general manager of WDPR-FM, will serve as masters of ceremonies. The evening begins at 6:30 pm in the Wintergarden with a visual arts display and pre-show entertainment. The evening will continue at 8 pm in the Mead Theatre. The event is free, but tickets are required and can be reserved online.

WYSO’s Summer Concert celebrates Rev Cool and local music
This Sunday, WYSO 91.3FM will be presenting a free summer concert at Carillon Park. It’s going to be a night of music and dancing headlined by the Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble.
If you aren’t a regular WYSO listener, you may be wondering about Rev Cool, whose name adorns a variety of bumper stickers around the Miami Valley. Jim Carter has been hosting Friday evening programming at WYSO for nearly 30 years under the name Rev Cool. The show is called Around the Fringe and airs on WYSO every Friday night from 8pm until midnight. It features music from “around the world and right here in your own backyard.”

Rev Cool’s local music connection predates his time on the WYSO airwaves. In fact, by the time he started hosting Around the Fringe he was already president of his own record label, I WANNA. The label was responsible for the very first Guided by Voices release and an Earth Island Orchestra release featuring Macarthur Genuis Grantee Regina Carter.
“He had already proven himself as a cutting-edge live music promoter. And he was already firmly established at the center of a Dayton’s vibrant local music scene,” says WYSO Music Director Niki Dakota.
In the past few years, Rev Cool has taken the great dance-able vibe from his radio show and turned into a live performance. The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble features DJs accompanied by live musicians and dancers coordinated by Cityfolk’s Kelsa Rieger.
“Over the last two years, The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble have come to be nothing short of a live-music REV-o-lution. It’s a sensation to the ears and the eyes, it lifts your spirits, and it leaves you powerless not to dance. It just may be the perfect stage show. Simply exhilarating,” says Dakota.

This perfect stage show will be rounded out by two other great local acts, C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks and Ruckus Roboticus.
C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks has been making a splash around the Miami Valley with their unique brand of instrumental, guitar-driven boogie. Featuring a stellar lineup of local musicians, their set promises to get the audience ready to dance. Arrive at 5pm sharp so you don’t miss a minute of their set.
After Parlour Tricks, Ruckus Roboticus will be spinning a DJ set that promises to lots of fun. If you didn’t make it to his EP release show I told you about a few weeks ago, now is the time to see him in action.
This is a family friendly event and should be wrapped by 9pm so bring the kids. Hopefully they’ll be so worn out from dancing that you’ll have no problem getting them to bed when you get home.

The Michelob Dayton Blues Festival is the second of three free summer festivals presented by the City of Dayton Department of Recreation & Youth Services and The Downtown Dayton Partnership. It’s a day of music from Ohio blues acts beginning at 1pm. San Antonio’s Jose’ Alvarez with Los Blancos will headline at 8pm. The festival takes place at Dave Hall Plaza (Fourth & Jefferson Streets) and is hosted by Earl “Southside” Hayes

Wright’s Parlour Tricks have signed on for a weekly gig playing what they’ve coined as ‘pizza parlor boogie.’ The show is free every week and for the first month, they’ll be joined by opener Rob Heiliger. To get a taste of the tunes before you go out, check out Kaleidoscope on Wednesday at 8pm on WYSO. Chris Wright will be in the studio talking about the band and spinning some of their recordings. Wright will be joined on the air by former Luxury Pushers bandmate, Eric Purtle who’ll be talking about his band, Dark Backward’s upcoming CD release (more info on that later this week on Dayton Most Metro).
Free Bluegrass Show at Island Metropark
File this one under “Super Cool Free Event.” Saturday evening Dayton is lucky to have a Bluegrass legend performing at Island Metropark for Five Rivers Metroparks’ Annual Bluegrass Concert. Dr. Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys will be performing in the bandshell along with Dale Ann Bradley beginning at 6pm. Stanley has been playing Bluegrass for over 55 years and casual fans will recognize his music from the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou. This is a great opportunity to see a legendary performer in a great outdoor setting – and did I mention that it’s free?!
Mountain Screamer begins May Residency
As a new month begins, it’s time for The Buddha Den to present a new artist in residence for its NTRO/XPO showcase at South Park Tavern. This FREE weekly event is a great way to get to know some of the of the area’s new and established bands. Hot off the release of their self-titled debut album, Mountain Screamer will be rocking every Tuesday in May with a host of special guests:
