KENNEDY VINEYARD is a locally owned, family run business featuring wines using Niagara and Concord grapes grown on site. They have a Riesling that is a little champagne like and delicious as well. Feel free to browse the menu below and check out the various wine choices. Most are sweet with a fruitty finish, again due to the Ohio grapes.

Subterranean’s April 22nd album release is getting national attention

Subterranean, a band who got it’s start downtown at the old J-Alan’s club, has evolved into one of the hottest bands in the region. Their debut album, Loom, which releases on Saturday April 22nd, is already garnering attention from multiple national music publications, as one of the emerging acts to check out.

The members of Subterranean describe their music as “improv with intent.” There is no succinct way to describe them, as they genre-bend not just from song to song, but within songs themselves. I asked guitarist Chris Coalt how they manage to pull that off so seamlessly.

“I think it starts with consuming music without boundaries. I’ve never liked titles or categories. Why can’t things just be what they are? So as a songwriter, I’ve always naturally blended different genres together, because it felt natural to me. As a band, we’ve wanted the freedom to do anything, so we have never let ourselves get pigeon-holed into one style.”

As an avid fan of their live music, I wondered how that improve sound would translate into recorded music. Would it alter or evolve once they got into the studio? Chris further explained that for the most part, the nuts and bolts of the songs remained. “Gary King (Refraze Recording Studio) is a great engineer, so he was able to give us some nice ideas on harmonies and vocal arrangements, but the majority of the songs were already in place. Although I will say, one song got created spontaneously in the studio!”

A song developing naturally and unexpectedly in the studio doesn’t surprise me. These veterans of the Dayton music scene schooled themselves on improv during tireless jam sessions all over the city. Replacing a rhythm guitarist or keyboardist with sax, proved to be their winning combination. Breaking the rules of the traditional 4-piece rock arrangement helped this band find their voice: a sound is extraordinarily dynamic, bouncing from moody jazz to funky jams to what borders on heavy metal.

Big Damn Holiday Jam at Therapy Cafe

This holiday jam session is a Dayton music tradition!

Dayton area musicians and fans are gathering at Therapy Cafe on Wednesday December 21st for the Big Damn Holiday Jam, a special homecoming jam session for the holidays. This unique event includes touring local musicians we don’t get to see too often, so this is definitely a “don’t miss” event!

Not only is there amazing music provided, there’s delicious food provided as well. The theme for this week is holiday appetizers. Feel free to bring a dish if you’d like! It’s a family gathering vibe, which is what makes it extra special.

You can even get some holiday shopping done! Abyss Collections, Candis Young and Jonathon Gale will have some lovely creations for your last minute holiday gifts.

Most of all, I’m looking forward to seeing The Family favorites jam together, including Chris Houser, Dino Dimitrouleas, Jeremy Canonico, Ronald Frost, Jonny Dread, Eric Henry, Melissa Nicole Henry, Anthony SaxTone Arrington, Phil Bradley-Hutchison, Marcus Cornwell and Alex Delk. They’ve even have Blues favorite Bob Dellaposta at this session, to kick off the evening’s festivities with an acoustic hour from 8pm to 9pm.

Hog Jam Adds Canoeing to the 11th Annual Music Festival

One of the area’s most beloved local music showcases, Hog Jam Music and Camping Festival, is back yet again with it’s eleventh year of musical goodness. This year festival organizers have added a fun twist, by changing the location of the festival to Adventures on the Great Miami in Tipp City, adding canoeing to the list of awesome activities this event has to offer!

The best reason to go is the simply astounding line-up of local music, which includes The Almighty Get Down, Guthrie Brown, Subterranean, Tony Red Band, Jonny Dreads and the Mystiks, Sharon Lane, Reyna Spears and many more! Add camping, waterslide, vendors, canoeing, and the traditional hog roast to the event, and it’s a “don’t miss” event for music lovers and adventurers alike.

The Werk Out is Dayton Band’s Biggest Event Ever

It’s incredibly exciting when one of our own home grown Dayton bands makes it big. Many Daytonians are not aware of the incredible national following The Werks have created. After ten years of touring, most recently from an adventurous Alaskan tour, they are back to their native Ohio to throw their biggest party yet, the 7th annual Werk Out Music and Arts Festival.

The festival started closer to Dayton, but as it has skyrocketed in popularity, it found it’s home at the Grateful Dead’s old stomping grounds, Legend Valley Concert Venue in Thornville, Ohio (formerly known as Buckeye Lake Music Center). This year’s festival is the biggest and boldest yet. Music fans were thrilled to see the amazing line-up of both national and regional acts, which include some of the top names in the jam and electronica scene, including STS9, Lettuce, and Greensky Bluegrass.

This year’s festival includes special collaboration sets that are certain to be unforgettable:a daytime memorial set dedicated to the memory of beloved former Werks member Norman Dimitrouleas; Twerkapod, which is a late night 90’s music tribute set with members of Twiddle, The Werks, and Dopapod; Daft Funk, a tribute to Daft Punk by Earphunk; and an appearance by Everyone Orchestra with special guest Todd Stoops.

This is one of the premiere music festivals in Ohio, and Dayton Ohio couldn’t be prouder of our home town boys making it big! Congratulations to the Werks family, and for fans, don’t miss this highly anticipated summer festival!

Dayton Music All-Stars Gather for Aria Marie Fundraiser

The Dayton music scene is a generous one, gathering often to give back to the community and loved ones through benefit shows. One that is particularly exciting is coming up at Oddbody’s Music Room. Nightbeast, Jasper the Colossal, Shotgun Surprise and Team Void are all performing together to benefit the Aria Marie Foundation on July 9th, 2016.

The Aria Marie Foundation was founded in March 13, 2014 by Dale Spradling, lead singer of Shotgun Surprise shortly after Aria Marie, his daughter, lost her life tragically. She left behind a beautiful baby girl, Maleigha Nicole. Dale was inspired to start up the foundation to help children who have lost one or both parents by raising money to provide a small college fund for each child and providing Christmas presents to the children yearly.

Attending this show is a win-win for rock fans. Very reasonable, typical entry fee to see one some of Dayton’s best rock bands, plus help give back to a deserving charity! If you want to make a donation to the Aria Marie Foundation, click here.

Alexis Gomez is a Food Adventures Fan !

Good things happen to good people. So is the case with local musician and national American Idol Star, Alexis Gomez. Hard work and success has paid off for this fun natured, family loving young woman. She is one of the nicest, down to earth people you could meet. It isn’t every day that you get to go on a Food Adventure with a music star!

You may remember when she first stole America’s heart with her memorable TV debut, the audition scene where she “made it to hollywood” HERE IS THE VIDEO.

Alexis took time out of her busy schedule to have lunch with us at one of her favorite spots, Boosalis Bakery in Crosse Pointe Center, Centerville. Recently, she has been traveling to Nashville and Dayton to write and record music. Alexis is also gearing up for a slew of concerts this summer ranging from Dayton area venues to the House of Blues, Cleveland! Food Adventures sat down with Alexis, her mom and sister and of course we wanted to talk .. FOOD

But before we dive into that, let’s get to know one of Dayton’s upcoming stars and 2015 Amercian Idol Finalist..

— She is a Dayton native who has been playing music and singing with her family her whole life. She has many photos on her Instagram of early years playing shows, or rehearsing with her family.

— Very involved in her church, Alexis and her family believe in giving back to the community. She has a strong spiritual upbringing, that has made her humble and well grounded, with a refreshing appreciation for life.

— Alexis is definitely a foodie, and told us of her American Idol visits to some cities where she got to sample the area foods. But many times, the contestants were served a strict diet, some of which included limited selections. She laughed, telling us she doesn’t like mushrooms for breakfast. But sometimes that was all they had to offer, so she was grateful when traveling and getting some “outside food.”

1) DON PABLOS – Yes, we know it is a chain, but her Mexican roots call out to her current obsession – Don Pablo’s Prairie Fire Bean Dip. There is a location near the Fairfield Commons Mall.

2) FLYING PIZZA: She loves the hand tossed classic cheese pizza, a Dayton original! Alexis also finds their breadsticks and cheese sauce irresistable.

3) MI BURRITO MEXICAN GRILL: Located at 8374 Princeton Glendale Road in Mason, Ohio, this place is a little known secret to Daytonians. Alexis says it is worth the short drive for some amazing burritos, nachos and more Mexican specialties

4) AREPAS and CO.: Sweet Choclo Arepas are her fave at this Columbian restaurant with 2 popular locations in the Dayton area

5) CITY BBQ: Her “go to” is the Chicken Tenders with the

City BBQ, Centerville

Brushfire BBQ sauce! Alexis hits up the downtown Centerville location, but there is another location in Beavercreek/Fairborn at 2330 N Fairfield Rd. for foodies in that area.

6) BOOSALIS BAKING and CAFE: Alexis told us about an incredible trademark menu item here, and she was right! The Cranberry Turkey Sandwich served with homemade cranberry bread is one of the best sandwiches Food Adventures has ever eaten. Also those Kouign Amann pastries, pronounced “Queen Amann,” are delicate, delicious buttery pastries, that are reminiscent of a croissant in a cupcake shape. You gotta try this place in Cross Pointe Center!

7) LOCK 27 BREWING: Alexis says the Keener Burger is the best bet here. Chef House agrees !

8) DIXIE DAIRY DREEM: This iconic ice cream stand in Moraine is a local favorite. Alexis grew up on the chili dogs and blue raspberry slush floats, which says are some of the best in the world.

9) DEWEY’S PIZZA: Great pizza, started in the Oakley neighborhood in Cincinnati. Alexis suggests this custom combination to top your pizza: White Sauce, Ricotta Cheese, Banana Peppers and Roasted Red Peppers.

10) ELE CAKE CO. BISTRO and WINE BAR: Alexis frequents this bistro at Austin Landing for their Ratatouille dish. It is a friendly and fun atmosphere at this little shop

Sideshow, a free music and art festival, is happening downtown May 13-14

This year marks the 11th time the Dayton Circus Creative Collective’s has presented their annual two-day community arts festival, The Sideshow. It’s an exciting milestone that this group and the community have made it possible all these years.
The Sideshow celebrates the local arts scene and is unique in Dayton for its variety and ambition.

The Sideshow recognizes the potential of every individual to create. We empower the members of our community by helping them actualize their dreams. We value the contributions of everyone, and we support each other with a true sense of community. We know that through collaborating with others, we create something greater than ourselves.

Sideshow 11 will be presented at The Yellow Cab building (700 E. 4th St) on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, 2015. It traditionally features a variety of artwork – including installations, sculptures and paintings from more than 50 local artists and performances by over 50 musical acts.

Admission is FREE! Donations will be accepted to support the event.

Insider tip! There is a FREE show at Trolley Stop this Friday April 29th, 2016 with two incredible bands, Grover and Common Center. Plus that fabulous patio? It’s a no brainer for Friday night fun!

On the fringes of the jam band scene, local rock quartet Grover, blend funk, soul, and jazz, in a down and dirty rock band that comes across unpolished and “garage” as much as they do highly-skilled, almost veteran.

Common Center is a group of individuals from Covington, Kentucky that gather to form a collection of sonic exploration. Their all-original material arises from a vast array of influences morphing together to create a unique sound previously unheard, but longed for, by the ear. They combine powerfully upbeat as well as tranquil themes with mystic, other-world intertwining melodic elements from instrumental and vocal harmonies.

Enjoy a beautiful evening with some of the region’s funkiest talent!

The Music Power Conference

The Dayton music community is coming together in a way that we’ve never seen before. Local music experts are volunteering their time and knowledge to benefit musicians and bands in the area through the first ever Music Power Conference, being held this May. The sole purpose of this conference is to bring all those together, who are contributors to the music scene (artists, venues, media, agents, producers, etc.), and to work on a common goal: “To enhance the visibility for artists with higher venue attendance, and to facilitate a process of reaching the consumer in a proven strategic marketing effort and not in a hopeful manner.”

This one day, all-day event is absolutely packed with music business keynotes, panels, clinics, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring. Attendees with have the tremendous opportunity to learn new ways of approaching audience development, and overall become more successful in the music industry, both locally and at large. For local musicians, this is a “don’t miss” event!

The Boxcar Suite Celebrates New Life on the Limb EP

One of the city’s most beloved local rock bands, The Boxcar Suite are celebrating the release of their newest EP, Life on the Limb, by throwing a huge April Fool’s Day Party with their friends the Nick Frye Band. Join in on the revelry Friday April 1st at The Trolley Stop. Show starts at 9pm.

If you’re not familiar with The Boxcar Suite – it’s long overdue that you get familiar with them! They are likened to Tom Petty, Neil Young, but definitely that Dayton rock’n’roll edge. To get a taste of their newest music, check out their Room Full of Cowards video below.

Get to know Oddbody’s Music Room

In my early years of going to see live music in Dayton, I went to many memorable shows at McGuffy’s House of Rock in east Dayton, off Burkhardt Ave. It’s always been a great general admission venue, which is so much more fun than seated shows. In the last few years, the line-ups just weren’t calling to me, and it fell off my radar.

In 2014, the venue was sold to new owners. Now named Oddbody’s Music Room, I was cautiously optimistic about the venue’s future. When I first met with the new owners, Neilson Hixson, Skip Murray and Richard Eckhardt, I knew this historic space was in good hands. I was so impressed by their professionalism and dedication to bringing not only great sounding shows, but a more diverse offering of musical acts.

In the last couple years I can attest that have done a simply fantastic job bringing our former stomping grounds to new heights. What’s new? Well other than a fresh coat of paint, the sound and light system has been revamped and cranking! It’s definitely one of the best indoor venues in the regional area.

I got a chance to catch up with Neilson about his thoughts on taking a chance on the venue, the local music scene, and how to keep up with this exciting spot:

1. What inspired you to open a music venue? What an exciting venture!
It’s really simple. I think we’re crazy. This is a tough business, make no doubt about that. So many highs and lows. I’ve been promoting shows for well over 20 years and we had an opportunity to maintain this iconic Dayton stage. We took a leap of faith and did it.

2. Let’s say someone hasn’t heard of Oddbody’s Music Venue. How would you describe it? What differs it from other venues in town?
We look like a classic mid cap rock club that you’ll find scattered around the country. The room might not be fancy but what we really have going for us is our stage and production capabilities. And that’s really what matters doing what we do. The stage and the team we have running it. We put it on a pedestal to honor it. The production of a concert is hands down the single most important part in all of this. And I think the patrons, the fans, who come and see these artists really feel that.

3. You have been involved in the Dayton music scene for a long time. How has the scene changed over the years? Thoughts about it’s current state?
When I got started doing all this stuff I was primarily booking and promoting metal. That’s always where my heart has been. And the metal scene is still pretty solid around here. Great local artists and when we bring in these larger touring bands generally the attendance at the shows remains good. In the last two years I’ve learned a lot about other music scenes in Dayton. Some are extremely strong, others hit and miss. But there remains a lot of extremely talented local talent. Bottom line is the bands and the people actively attending shows will change over time. Change is constant in the music business. But if you book the right bands at the right time people will come out to see them. You absolutely can’t take anything for granted though. Just simply booking a band and expecting people to buy tickets will run you out of business as quickly as you started it. Getting butts in the seats remains hard work. And if you are not willing to do the work this business is not for you. That sure hasn’t changed much.

4. What advice would you give to musicians? Regarding promotion and/or professionalism?
Decide who you are. Are you doing it for fun or is this a business? Are you just happy being a local band playing some gigs here and there or are you going to try to “make it”. Are you willing to put in the work? Look it’s just as crazy being a young touring band as it is a venue owner. But it’s what we do. It’s in our blood. Practice your instrument, develop a sellable product, invest in your product, and fully commit to your product. Build a team to help you sell your product. It’s like running any other business. It’s not easy, you have to take some leaps of faith. You will still probably fail. But you only live once. And who wants to go through life thinking you never tried to do anything. In a matter of minutes venue owners and stage managers can see what choice you’ve made. Think about that too.

5. You have some amazing shows coming up. What’s the best way for way for people to keep up with the schedule?

Dive Bar Tuesday – Phone Booth Lounge

And the the night began: with a cocktail or two).

Since the team started working on Dive Bar Tuesdays, one bar has been at the top of our list to get to sooner than later. It is one that we all discovered while working together and we had been attending for a while. The location was relatively central to where we all lived, the food and drink prices were right, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxed. Schedules did not align, especially since on Tuesday nights the bar was packed. Packed to the point people were making reservations. Reservations? In a dive bar? When Tuesday Night Trivia is so popular that majority of the tables in the place are set aside, something special has to be happening. This week we were finally able to make it to the Phone Booth Lounge in Kettering. It was much quieter than the last few times we tried to enjoy the calm atmosphere we were accustomed to.

The Phone Booth just exudes calm. It could be the fact that they have been serving customers for the last five decades. That’s right, they have been sitting there taking care of customers since 1964. The wood paneled walls and stained ceiling tiles tell that tale well. And not in a “this place needs an update” way. It is just comfortable, like a well-worn sweater. The bartenders are friendly, going the distance to help me find a whiskey I enjoyed (I was feeling some Bushmill’s) and rooting through the beer cooler for me. There were photos of bands surrounding the stage, and lit signs indicating all of the upcoming events being held there. There is live music all weekend, including a Blues Jam on Thursday nights. Monday through Wednesday they have beer specials and something different each night; Wii bowling on Mondays, trivia on Tuesday, and warm up the stage on Wednesday with karaoke. This month they will also be teaming up with the Dayton Blues Society for their Second Annual Youth Showcase on February 20^th.

Their cocktail menu reflects their claim of being the Home of Kettering Rock and Roll. The shot list falls on the more traditionally named side, with Black and Blues, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Sweet Tarts. When you look over to the cocktail menu, however, the rock comes out. You can find some Sweet Emotions, possibly Blinded by the Light, or end up Knocking on Heaven’s Door. There is a list of beers, wines, and other liquors they have on the back, but it is not a complete list. There is one thing that they took down that I really enjoyed using to see all their beers; a beer shelf that hung over the bar. It allowed you to look at the selection of specialty beers and be ready to order on a moment’s notice. This is also one of the few bars I have been to where all of the liquor is not up where it can be immediately seen. The hiding of the complete beer and liquor menu may just be a clever ploy to get you to chat with the staff.

So. Many. Nachos.

The food menu is a perfect complement to the space. It is all very comfortable food. You are not going to hit many surprises on it, unless you order the nacho platter without understanding what you are asking for. There was other food on the table, like hot dog pretzel bites and fried mushrooms, but we all turned our heads when the nachos came. It was big enough to serve the five people that were sitting there, and there were enough toppings on it to hold it all together. Even after nibbling on it for the better part of an hour, we did not finish it. It was one hell of a surprise to see on the table, and makes me curious as to what other surprises may be lurking in that kitchen.

Why is this place packed on a Tuesday night? It is definitely more than for just the trivia. Good food and good company are part of the equation, even if you come alone. You have great bartenders to talk with, and there is pool, darts, and on Monday nights, bowling to keep you occupied. You can admire the art show on the ceiling tiles through the building, some of which has been there for years. In the warmer months there is a patio for your enjoyment. For a low key night with friends, it is the perfect place to meet, get cozy, and hang out for a few hours.

Hawthorne Heights puts on a Gem City Music Festival!

Hawthorne Heights presents “Dayton Is For Lovers“, an all ages Gem City music festival tonight.

The band states, “We very rarely get to play a true hometown show, and are super excited to be able to make this happen. Dayton has a lot of very special and talented musicians, so choosing the line up was a difficult process. We tried to choose old friends, new friends, and total strangers that are both talented and working hard within the scene. What we came up with was an eclectic group of acts from a variety of genres. It is important for us to have the show be all ages, and at a venue in the downtown area of the city we love and call home.The Yellow Cab building is a great location downtown with it’s own private parking lot. It’s located just a block behind the post office in downtown Dayton.”

Mikesells: Tins and New Flavors? ! WIN CHIPS !

These tins will be in stores next week !

Mikesell’s Snack Food Company is bringing back the holiday tins for the first time in 15 years! They are also going to introduce some new flavors in 2016 and we have the scoop.

The Food Adventures Crew was lucky enough to sample the new flavors and we are so excited about the throwback tins, that we are giving away some free chips!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Since 1910, Mikesells Potato Chips have been a part of Dayton life, and still remain family owned today by DW Mikesell’s descendants.

— The tins were wildly popular in the 70’s and 80’s, with throwback designs, celebrating anniversaries such as the 75th and 80th years in business.

— Next week, for the first time in 15 years, grocery stores will start carrying Commerative Tins of Mikesells chips, just in time for the holidays. The tins each contain 2 sealed bags of chips. Tins will be available for a limited time only.

Korean BBQ is one of the new flavors being considered for 2016

NEW FLAVORS BEING CONSIDERED for 2016:

Mikesells had been testing flavors at the Dragon’s games and at Unversity of Dayton. Food Adventures was lucky enough to get a private sampling of the candidates, some of which will go into production in 2016. Here are the flavors and our comments on them.

— HOT ROASTED GARLIC and DILL: One of the favorites, look for this one to be a hit. Who doesn’t love garlic?

— JALAPENO RANCH: A nice ranch dusting, not overpowering, with a slight kick at the end. Again, not too hot, just enough to take notice. Chef House, the spicy food queen of Dayton, had a smile after sampling these! This was one of Hungry Jax’s top picks too!

— LOADED CHEESEBURGER: The most complex chip, even down to tasting the ketchup. The flavoring brains behind this chip is brilliant. Hungry Jax simply described them as “Aweseome.”

— HONEY BUTTER: The flavor fad that has hit South Korea, may be coming to Dayton. This Honey Butter chip has a very subtle taste, almost muted. A very easy going chip, and would be perfect with dip.

— SMOKED GOUDA: Probably a long shot, as it seems to have a pretty adult palate. May need some tweaking, but they are definitely on to something unique..

— KOREAN BBQ: Very eatable chip, and such a disctinctly unique flavor. We could see Daytonians eating the whole bag here… Hungry Jax voted this as her favorite and The Big Ragu rated this flavor near the top.

— CREAMY WASABI: This one had more bounce to the ounce than expected. The little zing at the end is a perfect flavor finish. The chip was The Big Ragu’s favorite.

WHAT FLAVORS WILL MAKE THE CUT?

As Luke Mapp, ‎Director of Sales and Marketing explains, we wish we could offer them all, but the problem is limited display space. He said that in grocery stores and other outlets, when you introduce new flavors, it often means you have to yank one of the current flavors. All of it is due to limited shelve allowances. Luke knows his stuff. He is the great grandson of founder D.W. Mikesell and has had a lifelong involvement in the company. We want to send out a special thank you to Luke and his staff for being so accommodating on our taste test and facility tour. It was a fun and fascinating evening.

One last comment, Mikesells is introducing another product in February that we were able to sample. Unfortunately, we were sworn to secrecy about its existence. All we can tell you is that is was probably the best thing we tasted that day. Stay locked in to Mikesells and Food Adventures, and we will spill the beans as soon as it comes out in stores!
