*** FOOD ADVENTURES WITH BIG RAGU and THE CREW ***

Blazing the trails in the foodie forums since 2008, Food Adventures has developed a large following…

Today, we add some big players to the mix.  They include Chefs, Foodie Fanatics, royalty and an appetite for Dayton that has never been bigger.  Although we have a couple of new faces, FOOD ADVENTURES with BIG RAGU and THE CREW, is still the same FOOD ADVENTURES you have come to love.  We will continue to have the MUST EATS, killer food photos that make your mouth water, and multiple visits to a place before we write an article.  Will continue to give you “THE SKINNY” on our favorites.  Follow our relentless pursuit of the best eats in the Miami Valley!

Together, your humble Food Adventurers will seek out locally owned restaurants, unique places off the beaten path, and even give our slant on some familiar favorites. Whenever we visit a place, we call it a “Food Adventure.”  You can expect pictures of each Food Adventure we embark on. You can expect us hugging waiters, visiting mom & pop establishments, posting nostalgic blogs, tongue-in-cheek comments and emotionally eating our way through life.   We don’t take ourselves seriously, enjoying the adventure all the way.  “We are not food critics, we just love to eat!”  Food Adventures won’t limit ourselves, we try it all – NO RULES !  We will leave no plate unturned.

You know the Big Ragu already ...

You already know The Big Ragu

We will continue to set the trends, host Food Adventure dinner events, and give our unique spin on Dayton’s best “Mom and Pop” places in the Miami Valley.  Food Adventures with Big Ragu and the Crew will continue to attend and support numerous local food and charity events.   We eat it all, and the photos are ours. No stock pics here.  We aren’t a share and click site.  We are Dayton Originals, so all of our stuff is original content. Often imitated, never duplicated, accept no substitutions.

Our recent “Meeting of the Mouths” happened last Sunday at Lily’s Bistro on Chicken Dinner night.  We will get into the Must Eats from that night shortly, but first…,

Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to MEET THE NEW CREW !

Chef House - expert foodie !LEEANNE HOUSE aka “CHEF HOUSE”:

Chef House or “The Sriracha Mamma” is all about the heat.  Lover of all things spicy she is constantly in the kitchen coming up with fun new ways to whip up veggies and add a little spice.  She is a Dayton native, with lifelong experience in the restaurant industry, working with some of the best chefs in the Miami Valley.  She loves to keep it local especially in the summer when beautiful produce is plentiful. She is a true foodie who knows we have a lot to offer in Ohio!

Chef House’s Top 5 Favorite Local Places for a Food Adventure :

(in no particular order)

1) Meadowlark (they do veggies right!)

2) Rue Dumaine (it never disappoints)

3) Fresco (best chef hands down)

4) Oregon Express (favorite pizza since I was a kiddo)

5) My kitchen ! …  duh!!!!

***************************************************

JACLYN SCANLAN aka “HUNGRY JAX”:

Jackie relocated to the Dayton are in 2006. This Italian from Upstate NY found herself in a very different culinary atmosphere than what she was used to back home in Utica, NY.  However, different proved to be good a she fell in love with not only this “gem” of a city, but also the food and foodies within it! Cooking is a passion of Jackie’s.  She loves to use her husband, John, and two daughters, Coraline and Ashlyn, as her lab rats to test recipes out.  Some of her recipes have even been published in National Food Magazines!  But as much as she loves to cook, she also loves to take a night off from her kitchen and enjoy eating out and letting someone else do all the work (and the clean up)!  Other foodie interests include years of volunteering at the Dorothy Lane Market School of Cooking and being an Alton Brown fan since way back when he wore bowling shirts.  Jackie is excited to be part of the Food Adventures team and is looking forward to experiencing some new eats!

Jackie’s Top 5 Favorite Local Places for a Food Adventure:

1) Lock 27

2) The Cakery

3) Sweeney’s Seafood

4) Dorothy Lane Market

5) Zombie Dogz

 And our final Food Adventurer…
The King - all smilesBLAKE KING aka “THE KING”

After hopping the globe with the Air Force, The King recently touched down in Dayton with his wife and daughters. Flying recon for great local food, the Big Ragu has set the course for his newest wingman, and he is logging some serious mileage. The King is a dessert FREAK! There is no shake too shaky, pie too flakey, nor cake to…cakey for this lunatic. He wants to find the best dessert in Dayton. Please help him. He needs it, a lot.

The King’s Top 5 Favorite Local Places for a Food Adventure:

1) Taco Loco

2) Jet Freeze

3) Bill’s Donut Shop

4) Hasty Tasty Pancake House

5) Submarine House

Now to the food of the day .. not a typical article for us, this is just about one dinner …. The Sunday Chicken Dinner at Lily’s Bistro

Get your hens ready….

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The dinners go from 5pm – 9pm on Sundays only

— The menu is pretty much fried chicken, with the sides, appetizers, and desserts changing from week to week.

— The prices are $9 for a 2 piece dinner, $16 for a 1/2 chicken dinner, and $28 for a whole chicken

— Sides are $3,  good prices, no clucking around

Now we ruffle our feathers and give you our patented.. Must Eats!

Buttered Johnnycake..

Johnny Cakes at Lily’s Bistro. Click to Enlarge the Goodness

MUST EATS:

— JOHNNY CAKES:  It might have been chicken night, but the appetizers and sides stole the show !  We couldn’t stop talking about the Johnny cakes. Pancakes, as an appetizer? This was right up our alley. The King wished he could have bottled the scent to keep by his pillow at night. Made with jalepeno, for just enough contrasting kick to the sweet buttery mapleness.   These cakes were  slathered in butter and syrup and simply amazing.  Who would have thunk it?   Crispy, sweet and spicy made for a perfect combination, and Chef House’s favorite dish of the night.

— SMOKED SALMON DIP:  Another great appetizer of the night, served with bagel “nuggets.”  We started out polite, then found ourselves thumb wrestling for the last bits.  Addicting, and addiction is an ugly thing.

— HOMEMADE MASHED POTATOES: We are talking the real deal, mashed with decent sized chunks in them.  We wondered why conversation stopped, it was as if all the Food Adventurers discovered these at the same time and were very quietly stuffing their faces.

— COOLDADDY COCKTAIL:  This spicy cocktail is a must.  Who could pass up a drink that features Chef House’s Sriracha sauce? Tequila, handmade pepper syrup, strawberries, cilantro are also among the ingredients.

— BEIGNETS:  Pronounced “Ben-yays.”   Known in some circles as “pizza frite”, “zeppole” or fried dough, these puffs of dough are a perfect end to a rich dinner.  Ever so slightly covered with sifted powdered sugar, Big Ragu had white on his “man bib vest” in no time.

Smoked Salmon Dip with Bagel nuggets - a must eat

Smoked Salmon dip, made in house, with Bagel Bites

Honorable Mention:  The mac n cheese and hand breaded, fried okra deserve a nod!

Your Visit To Local Submarine House Could Be Worth $10,000

February 22, 2014 By Kim Estess Leave a Comment

italian_0What good healthy living guru doesn’t like sub sandwiches? Actually, whether you are into healthy living or not–who doesn’t love subs?  Okay, so we’re clear–everyone loves subs.

Now riddle me this: who wouldn’t want to win $10,000?  Answer: no one.
Submarine House is giving you the chance to enjoy two good things all in one visit to their restaurant.  Enjoy a delicious sub sandwich and stick your name in a drawing for $10,000.  Or don’t eat the sandwich–because technically, no purchase is necessary to enter.  But seriously–how can you pass up their Philly Cheesesteak sandwich? That might not be the healthiest pick on the menu (I’m sure it isn’t) but if you ask me, healthy living is all about balance. So eat the Cheesesteak. Just don’t eat one every day.

Stop into any local Submarine House store between now and April 5 and simply fill out an entry form for your chance to be entered to win $10,000.  If that isn’t reason enough, Submarine House is also donating a portion of their sales from now until April 5 to Dayton’s Children’s Medical Center.  Repeat after me: Good food. Good cause. Chance to win cash. Done and done.

cheesesteak

Finally, if you want an additional chance to win some cash, you can attempt to qualify for the Super Duper Cheesesteak eating challenge.  I’d recommend running at least a 10k before you attempt to eat the thing–that way, you’ll be totally famished and it might help your chances! But seriously, to qualify for the eating challenge and win first prize of $1,000, contestants have until March 23 to attempt to become a store champion at any Submarine House location. Contestants will attempt to eat a 16-inch Super Duper Cheesesteak — more than three-and-a-half pounds of food — in 16 minutes or less. Successful participants win their sandwich for free, along with a T-shirt. The 10 top qualifying times from each location will win a spot in their store’s semifinals during the week of March 24. At the semifinals, a store champion will be crowned by determining the person who can eat the 16-inch Super Duper Cheesesteak in the fastest time.

So whether you’re interested in vying for the Super Duper Cheesesteak crown this year or just dropping your name in for a chance to win $10,000, take a minute and drop into your local Submarine House before April 5.

Favorite ‘Kids Eat Free’ Places in Dayton

August 22, 2013 By Dayton937 7 Comments

Still feeling it in the pocketbook from all those back to school clothes and supplies?  Then listen up, because we have some Food Adventure scoop for you.

We have compiled a list of The Big Ragu’s and Crew’s favorite “Kids Eat Free” places.  Gather up the gang, but make sure you know these basic guidelines:

— Generally each “free kid’s meal” is earned with 1 paying adult.  So if you are in the Brady Bunch, it looks like only Bobby and Cindy get free grub.  Well, unless you bring Alice and Sam the Butcher.

— Also, there are age limits on the “kids” (typically 10 and under).  Don’t expect your Senior Prom King son to get a zero cost meal anytime soon.  Make him mow some lawns or something.

Without further ado,  here are our favorite KIDS EAT FREE spots in the Dayton area.

Whether your kids are angels or brats, it won’t cost you a dime at these Miami Valley eateries:

STEAK THYME: Kids eat free Wednesdays after 5pm at this underrated restaurant in Kettering.  May we suggest a cheesesteak?  If not, how about a burger or gyro ?

LA PINATA:  Niño’s eat free every Sunday at this hot spot in Centerville.  Kids love the free chips and salsa.   It really doesn’t matter what they order, it will be a delicious combo of corn tortilla, beans, rice and cheese.  Great, cheap Mexican food here!

THE SUBMARINE HOUSE: Kids eat free everyday after 4pm at this East Coast style sub shop .  We don’t suggest they try the super duper cheesesteak challenge until they are 21.   Instead they will want to go with winners like the cheese pita pizza or the chicken tenders and fries.

FRICKER’S: Every frickin day, kids 10 and under eat free.  Wings, chicken chunks, boneless wings and burgers are the most popular.  Gourmet kids love the Frickin Chicken Pizza.

OINKADOODLEMOO: Tuesdays, kids eat free in the Oakwood restaurant.  That is a good deal, because good bbq isn’t cheap.

SKYLINE CHILI: Wednesday nights, kids eat free!  Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that this Cincinnati style chili place is an acquired taste.  Finicky kids will eat the plain hot dogs all day long !

DE’LISH CAFE: Kids eat free Thursdays until 8pm.   This is an upscale bistro, with some gourmet dishes.  Show your kids the great food photos on the website, before you go there.

FLYBOY’S DELI: Tuesdays and Thursdays 5-8pm, no cost for kiddos.   Like the marquee says, “Eat in New York City, without leaving historic Dayton.”  They offer 4 pizza choices and 4 panini choices.   From Buffalo chicken pizza to ham sandwiches, make sure you take them to the rooftop seating area for a fun Food Adventure.

Kids Eat Free every Frickin’ Day at Frickers

EARTH FARE: Thursdays 4-8pm, kids eat free.  The organic, gluten free and healthy food choices here are endless.

WG GRINDERS: Kids eat free everyday.  This Columbus based eatery has great sub sandwiches.  Some are colossal creations!

CHAIN FAVES:
QDOBA MEXICAN GRILL – Fun atmosphere at Qdoba where after 4pm on Sunday nights, you guessed it, kids eat free !!  Get the kids involved topping their own “lil burrito.”  Good, Mexican street food and it’s pretty healthy!
BEEF O’BRADY’S -Already a kid’s paradise, this place features a  ‘kids eat free’ night on Tuesdays from 4-8pm.   The chicken nuggets always score a touchdown with the little ones.

ALMOST FREE:
LAROSA’S – Kids get unlimited spaghetti dinners for 99cents on Mondays and Tuesdays !  Buddy LaRosa’s gang will make your kids smile with this deal.  We see sauce stained cheeks in your future.

Kids Eat Free at La Pinata on Sundays !

Nothing beats good free food.   It is a great money-saver for families on a budget.   So take advantage of these deals,  especially at the restaurants you may already frequent.    Maybe there is such a thing as a free lunch!

Want more food, fun and serious eats with couple of kids at heart?  Check out FOOD ADVENTURES on Facebook, HERE !

Food Adventure’s Small Bites for 2/16/2012

February 16, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Banana Rum Crunch Crepe

Welcome to FOOD ADVENTURES‘ bi-weekly feature called

“Small Bites,” which is simply a quick take on some of our favorite local food items.

Here are our “Small Bites” for 2/16/2012:

THE BANANA RUM CRUNCH CREPE at BOULEVARD HAUS:

We appreciates fantastic food from German heritage.  Boulevard Haus in Dayton’s Oregon District is a favorite stop.  This German restaurant, with a contemporary twist, has developed one of the greatest desserts that we have ever eaten.    It is called the Banana Rum Crunch Crepe.  This monstrous crepe is $6.95 and can be shared among your entire table.  It is loaded with bananas, white chocolate, rum sauce, and is topped with pecan brittle and whipped cream.  This dessert is a MUST, and sticks out among the other amazing menu items at Boulevard Haus.  The crepe tastes so good that it is like an Oktoberfest in your mouth!

THE PEEL AND EAT SHRIMP at DUNAWAY’s BEEF and ALE:

Perfect Peel and Eat

Nothing beats a great appetizer to get your taste buds tingling.  Food Adventures has found one such joy at Dunaway’s Beef and Ale in Troy, Ohio.  Their Peel and Eat Shrimp are fresh, crisp, and spiced just perfectly.  This addicting menu item goes perfectly with a pint of beer, and Dunaway’s has a great selection of drafts.  These shrimp are definitely one of the best cold appetizers around.  The Cajun spice dust on the shells helps create the perfect flavor that will have you craving more.  The shrimp are large and can be ordered by themselves, or part of a full dinner deal.  Check the specials, and you may get to have this treasure at a reduced price.

THE BIG RAGU SUGGESTS:

99 Cent Hand Rolls at Saya

THE 99 CENT HAND ROLLS at SAYA:

In Fairborn, one of the best kept secrets is a restaurant called Saya.  Located on Kauffman Road, they have some of the freshest tasting sushi around.  Their most superb deal is the 99 cent hand roll.   Let’s face it, sushi can be expensive, so take advantage of this item’s bang, for less than a buck.  The Big Ragu prefers the spicy tuna hand roll.  Put Saya on your Food Adventure Hit List, and you wont be disappointed in their selection.

THE SUPER DUPER CHEESESTEAK CHALLENGE at THE SUBMARINE HOUSE:

16 Inches of Heaven

Let the Big Ragu suggest a tasty, food challenge for those with big appetites.  The Submarine House has held a yearly event called the Super Duper Cheese Steak Challenge.   Actually, it is going on right now until March 18, 2012.  If you can eat a 16 inch Super Duper Cheesesteak in 16 minutes,  it is FREE !  The “Super Duper” version of the cheesesteak means 3 times the meat and cheese as their normal 16 inch sub.  The cheesesteak must be topped with the “works,” which means mushroom, onion, hot peppers, mayo, lettuce and tomato.  If your time is good enough, you can move on to the finals at a later date!  The Big Ragu ate his sandwich in 6 minutes, but was nowhere near the champion’s time of 2 minutes.  The cheesesteak is fantastic and the event benefits Children’s Medical Center of Dayton.

Have you had one of our favorite SMALL BITES ?  Please feel free to comment below and let us know what you think !
