City Sub Champ to Be Crowned June 9th!

May 30, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Come to the Centerville Submarine House Saturday June 9th and watch some people eat some subs… oh and you could win $10,000.

Yes … 10 grand …. and you can rock the night away with local band STRANGER who takes the stage at 7pm.

The Submarine House will crown the 2018 Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge Champion on Saturday June 9th at the Centerville Bar and Grill Location at 503 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd.  The fast and furious action will take place at 5pm.   This is the Finale of the contest and will pit each store champion vs store champion in a chow down showdown that promises to leave no crumbs.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on THE SUPER DUPER CHEESESTEAK CHALLENGE:

CHOMP CHOMP !

For several years, the Submarine House has hosted the annual Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge.  Hungry Daytonians have stepped up to take on the task of eating a 16 inch Super Duper Cheesesteak.  That means a Cheesesteak with triple the meat and triple the cheese, and the works toppings.  To beat the challenge, you have to eat all the deliciousness in 16 minutes or less.  Over the past couple of months each Submarine House location has had competitions to crown a “store champion” with the fastest time.   On June 9th those champs along with a couple of past city champions collide.  Again, this year the Centerville Submarine House is hosting the shindig.  Please come out and join the dozens and dozens who will be in attendance, seeing history take place.

Can anyone beat last year’s champion, CLAYTON NAYLOR, who ate the sub in about 2 minutes?

SUBMARINE HOUSE GIVES BACK:
This is also a celebration with the culmination of all the Submarine House location donations.   One of the most touching moments will be the presentation of a check donation to the Pink Ribbon Girls.  These funds were raised by the cheesesteak challenge and by donations from Submarine House owners, employees and customers.  Over the past few years, the Danner family, who owns the Submarine House, have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to local Dayton charities.  They have solidified their reputation as one of Dayton’s most giving restaurants.  Won’t you come out and support the cause as well?

Also, winners will include Submarine House customers as well.  Submarine House will be raffling off cash prizes of $1,000 and $10,000 dollars respectively.  That would be a nice kickstart to your summer.  You can order a lot of subs with 10 grand… but we digress…

STAY FOR THE AFTER PARTY, LOCAL ROCK BAND “STRANGER”  IN CONCERT !
Do you love 80’s music? Then you have yet another reason to come to the Submarine House June 9th. At 7pm, 80’s cover band Stranger takes the stage. End your night by rocking out to some great tunes.

What a great opportunity to come have dinner and drinks and watch the jaw dropping action.  There will be some big mouths chomping on those “16 inches of heaven.”  Stay for the live rock music afterwards !

About the PINK RIBBON GIRLS LOCAL CHARITY:
Pink Ribbon Girls provides Healthy Meals, Housecleaning, Transportation to Treatment and Peer Support to individuals with breast and women’s reproductive cancers free of charge.  The charity helps local women.  Real Dayton families are supported by them everyday.

So join the fun June 9th – here is the scoop:

BEHOLD THE 16 inch SUPER DUPER CHEESE STEAK

2017 Championships crowd

2017 champ Clayton Naylor with PInk Ribbon Girls charity

Executive Chef Jansen will be able to work with parts of the animal that are often overlooked or discarded and to tap into his team’s creativity to combine rustic tradition with high end preparations.
Bar Manager Amber Brady is assembling an optional craft beer pairing spotlighting local and Ohio-made beers to accompany this whole beast feast!
Make plans now to join Lily’s on Thursday, June 21 to celebrate the whole hog and 5 years in business! Golden Lamb Begins Historic Renovation

May 24, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Golden Lamb announced it is beginning major renovations on one of its four first floor dining rooms and kitchen as part of a master plan to reinvest in and refresh Ohio’s longest continually operating business.

In addition to this project, the Golden Lamb is proud of its recent and ongoing reinvestment into its historic property, including the General Grant Suite, a new hotel suite named in honor of the late Union General and 18th President, Ulysses S. Grant.  The General Grant Suite boasts rich mahogany furnishings, a luxurious private bathroom with marble floor and shower, as well as authentic artwork from the Civil War era. Updates also have been made to:

  • The Henry Clay private dining room, which hosts wedding receptions, private dinners and parties.
  • Refurbishment to the third and fourth floor hotel corridors, including new art that portrays the Golden Lamb’s colorful history and Shaker heritage led by the team at Caza Sikes.  Additionally, the Golden Lamb commissioned two signature pieces from Cincinnati artists Ursula Roma and Suzanne Fisher, now on display.

Renovations for the Charles Dickens dining room are now underway and will be completed by early July. The space will feature reclaimed Ohio hardwood floors, a new lighting package and dramatic wall coverings styled with a nod to Charles Dickens and the Victorian era. A warm library setting featuring keenly appointed furniture, antique lithographs and cherry dining tables from the Workshops of David T. Smith will bring the room together to ensure the feeling of the historic property is kept throughout.

Plans Integrate Heritage with New Ideas

“For our business to survive and thrive for 214 years, we’ve continuously evolved,” said Golden Lamb General Manager Bill Kilimnik. “This renovation will reinforce our heritage while writing the next chapter in our long history of being the place where friends, family and the community gathers.”

Kilimnik and the Golden Lamb ownership group worked hand-in-hand with an expert team to continue to evolve the vision of casual sophistication for the property in harmony with the heritage of the Golden Lamb.  The team includes Tim Herberth and Herberth Construction, a proven historical contractor, which is leading the project. Jenna Prenger of Reztark is the project designer, accompanied by Greg Snyder of the RDA Group on the architectural work.

“We’re as focused on our guests’ dining experience as we are on the unique ambiance of our property,” Kilimnik said. “With these changes coming to life, we’re as excited about sharing our future as we are proud of our past.”

Spirit of America in a Bottle with Indian Creek Distillery

May 22, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Joe and Missy Duer

It’s not easy putting history in a bottle, but Joe and Missy Duer have resumed a very old family tradition that allows them to do just that with their Artisan Farm Distillery~ Indian Creek Distillery, located in southern Miami County.

“Making whiskey the old fashioned way, not the industrialized way, is an art and flows out of passion and intuition which makes for a very artistic process,” Missy said.

Missy Duer comes from a long line of millwrights and distillers by trade. Her forefathers moved from Pennsylvania and settled in Ohio before it was recognized as a state. Missy’s great great great grandfather Elias and his two brothers built a grist mill along Indian Creek which was completed in 1818. Elias purchased the farm in 1820 and built a brick distillery to utilize the excess grain from the large grist mill. The demand for whiskey was great- a bonus for the ambitious Staley family.  Staley Rye Whiskey became known for its quality and customers traveled for miles to have their jugs filled. The business flourished for 100 years involving 3 generations of Staleys until Prohibition put a halt on whiskey production in 1920.

“From 1933 until about 15 years ago, you could not build a distillery in the state of Ohio, but recent law changes have allowed my husband Joe and I to bring my family’s distilling legacy back to life,” Missy said. “Most importantly was that my great-grandfather, George Washington Staley, saved the stills, mash tubs, fermenters and assorted distilling equipment from the revenuers during Prohibition. We also have the original Rye Whiskey recipe!”

The Duers have a modernized facility on their beautifully preserved family farm where the distilling takes place, but they operate with an “old school, old rules” mentality crafting whiskey like the Staley forefathers, including use of the original  copper potstills.  The stills are the oldest working stills in America today.  They follow an old, open-top mashing and fermentation process where the weather plays an important role in the process.

“There are limitations with open-top fermentation and mashing. You run into weather considerations because changes in the weather give you different yields. The reason being, mashing — which is the conversion of starch to sugar with the mixture of grain and hot water that takes three or four hours — if there is a drop in the barometric pressure, the yield of sugar is reduced,” Joe said. “In fermentation, which is the conversion of sugar to alcohol, there can be situations where there is electricity in the air from thunderstorms that will stop the action of the yeast being used. Once the storm is passed, the yeast can be reactivated but that can delay fermentation and the production of alcohol. All of these limitations and problems could be solved by not doing the open-top fermentation but that’s not the way the old boys did it, so we aren’t doing it that way either.”

There were numerous challenges in figuring out how to make Pre-Prohibition whiskey; Joe did most of the distilling when they first re-opened in 2012 and he had a tremendous challenge learning what the Staleys used to know.

“It was a steep learning curve because we were recreating history, and all the old timers are gone who I could ask,” Joe said. “We had to interpret old letters and recipes where the initial guidelines were to ‘heat your water and cool your water.’ That’s very interesting to me because I didn’t know what that meant until I found that heating the water consisted of being able to hold your hand in the water for one minute and cooling the water meant bringing it down to the temperature of fresh milk from a cow, which proposed an issue, because I didn’t have a cow.”

Indian Creek Distillery’s whiskeys are available at the distillery and in over 150 state agencies in Ohio.  The Duers also offer a delicious locally sourced maple syrup (StillHouse Maple Syrup) that is aged in their used rye whiskey barrels.

“The distillery is open seven days a week and attracts three types of people: historians, whiskey lovers, and whiskey historians,” Joe said. “I have applied everything I have learned in my life to this career because being self-employed can bring surprises. We knew coming into this we needed two things to make this work. First, you need a good product, and secondly and most importantly, you need a story, and we have that here in spades.”

“Our national history is a very personal one, at least it is for me,” Missy said. “Staley Mill Farm & Indian Creek Distillery tells the story of our country and of my family, one generation at a time. This beautifully preserved pioneer complex is a remarkably intact view into a vanishing landscape. My husband Joe and I share the past, the present and the future of our true heritage, timeless history and the spirit of liberty. We are preservationists by choice, pioneers by birth, dreamers of things to come and we are proud to produce America’s spirit… a true sip of history.”

Indian Creek Distillery is open year round at 7095 Staley Rd, New Carlisle, OH 45344. Hours are: Tuesday & Wednesday 12pm – 5pm, Thursday & Friday 12pm – 7pm, Saturday 12pm – 7pm (Tours available on Saturdays only at 12, 2, 4 and 6pm). Salar’s Chef Margot Invites You To Dinner at Her House!

May 16, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

While the repairs are being done to the Oregon District eatery that was damaged in a fire in late December, Salar Chef and Owner Margot Blondet is hosting a series of 3 pop up dinners at her home.  Guests will get to experience a five course dinner, that will feature a few Salar favorites as well as some brand new dishes being considered for the menu when the eatery reopens sometime this summer. No exact date has been set yet, but stay tuned for updates.

Damage was pretty extensive, so while the repairs were done, Chef decided it was also a good time for to refresh the look of the restaurant.  Gone will be the dark feel in the bar and dining room,  it will be light and bright, according to Chef.  She also shared she’s very excited about being able to expand the patio and add a pergola.

You can find out more from Margot herself by attending one of the three planned dinners coming up.  You can make a reservation by emailing with your choice of date to [email protected].

Here’s the menu for the first one this Saturday night:

The Belle of Dayton Distillery will soon be expanding operations to include craft cocktails featuring its locally distilled spirits.  The distillery’s craft cocktail room is driven by House Bill 351 passed in 2016 sponsored by State Representatives Rick Perales (R-Beavercreek) and Anthony DeVitis (R-Green), allowing Ohio distilleries to serve their distilled spirits and other alcoholic beverages by the glass to be consumed on the facility’s premises.

The ‘Van Buren Room’ located at the Belle of Dayton (122 Van Buren St., downtown Dayton), will be adjacent to the distillery operations in the current tasting room/gift shop.  The Van Buren Room will be an intimate space, including windows looking into the federally bonded distillery, with an early 1900s look and feel.  The cocktail room will pay homage to the original Belle of Dayton bottle uncovered in pile of broken glass across from the secret downtown Dayton Prohibition-era speakeasy.

The Van Buren Room menu will feature classic cocktails with Belle of Dayton spirits along with rare and experimental releases.  The craft cocktail bar will also showcase locally produced craft beer in cans and bottles, other Ohio distilled spirits, and an extensive selection of the highest quality Gins, Bourbon, Scotch, & Rye Whiskies.

Since opening in 2014, the Belle of Dayton Distillery has won numerous international awards and recognition for its pot distilled, small batch spirits along with the prestigious Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco Wine and Spirits- the Best Spirits in the World.  The Van Buren Room will be set up and held to the same standards of quality, along with flawlessly executed drinks to create a world-renowned craft cocktail bar right here in Dayton.

The Belle of Dayton will continue distilling and bottling throughout renovations, but the tasting room/gift shop will be closed to the public until tentative opening date set for August 2018.  The Belle of Dayton is currently looking for qualified candidates for Bartenders who share the same creative passion for spirits. Quest For The Best BBQ

May 13, 2018 By Bryan Suddith

BBQ is personal. BBQ is communal. BBQ at its core is primal. Meat slowed cooked over smoke. Simple. But not easy to do correctly.

BBQ is the only food that has a definition codified in Federal Law. Title 9 of The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) defines it this way in Chapter III, Subchapter A, Part 319, Subpart C, Section 319.80

“Barbecued meats, such as product labeled “Beef Barbecue” or “Barbecued Pork,” shall be cooked by the direct action of dry heat resulting from the burning of hard wood or the hot coals therefrom for a sufficient period to assume the usual characteristics of a barbecued article, which include the formation of a brown crust on the surface and the rendering of surface fat. The product may be basted with a sauce during the cooking process. The weight of barbecued meat shall not exceed 70 percent of the weight of the fresh uncooked meat.”

I love BBQ and have traveled thousands of miles eating the best of Memphis, Alabama, St. Louis and Kansas City. I have learned a few things about BBQ. It is intensely personal. Whenever a chef or pitmaster spends 8, 10 or even 15 hours preparing a cut of pork or beef, you are eating the real fruit of labor. The rub, the mop, the sauce, all come from family recipes tested and tasted and tweaked over time.

BBQ is best enjoyed with family. Splitting plates. Telling stories. Savoring time around the table. Slow. Just like the preparation.
I’ve done some research and found that you don’t have to drive far for authentic BBQ. We have some great ‘cue right here in Dayton Ohio. Let me tell you about them. These are my favorites and if you like slow cooked smoky meat, they will be yours too. There are another 1/2 dozen places to get bbq in Dayton (that doesn’t count some remarkable food trucks). These folks are smoking ribs, brisket, pork, chicken and sausage over a real fire with real smoke. That’s the standard.

Hickory River BBQ (Regional Chain 6 locations Illinois and Ohio)
135 S Garber Dr, Tipp City, OH 45371
Hickory River in Tipp is worth the drive. Its a big family place and reminded me of the bigger Kansas City joints I have visited in recent years. By far the friendliest of my visits. My son and I split 4 ribs, brisket, a pulled pork sandwich and a 1/4 pound of the smoked sausage with two sides and drinks for under $30 dollars. My favorites here were the ribs and sausage. The pulled pork had a good amount of bark full of smokey flavor. My son says the mac and cheese was as good as he ever had. The slaw was fresh and made in-house.
Did I mention the prices and friendliness? I can’t wait to get back there. Tuesday’s are buck a bone rib nights.
Gotta Try: Smoked Sausage

Texas Beef and Cattle Company
1101 W Third St, Dayton, OH 45402
Texas Brisket and Texas attitude. By far the best brisket I have had in Ohio. Peppery, slow cooked, sliced right. Smoke ring and it had a good pull to it. Tender, but not pot roast falling apart. The sauce is kept behind the counter, ask for samples of both offerings. The sausage was great and the pulled pork sandwich was full of smoke and tender. Careful ordering the menu here. It get’s pricey fast. Pulled pork, sausage and a portion of brisket with two sides set me back almost $40 bucks. Ribs are sold by the slab and 1/2 slab only so we didn’t get to try them. Wings need to be ordered ahead by 20-30 minutes. Drink offerings are limited but beer is an option.
Gotta Try: Brisket

Fatbacks Barbecue
1334 Linden Ave, Dayton, OH 45410
Fatbacks is my go-to. It’s set up like the smaller joints in Memphis, which I love. His brisket is always tender and the best pulled pork is found here. His ribs have a sweet finish which I prefer. He also has a thing he calls a pig pop. It is the lower shank smoked slow and covered in a sweet sauce that almost candies on the rendered skin. Get one. No. Get two. Sides here are always great, from greens to slaw to beans.
PS. This guy is building smokers like the pros use when he isn’t feeding lunch to locals on Linden Ave.
Gotta Try: Pig Pop

OinkADoodleMoo (4 locations and WPAFB)
912 E Dorothy Ln, Dayton, OH 45419
I’d put Oink’s ribs against anyone in Dayton. I wish I could figure out the rub he uses there. The founders of Oink studied BBQ in Kansas City brought their newfangled smoking technology back home to Dayton and we benefit from that. Their ribs are never overcooked and always have a great smoke. I find their brisket to be a bit overdone and falling apart. Still tasty on a bun though! Wings. Get the wings. Smoked tender and soft and full of flavor. Not like your normal bar wings. The corn pudding should be a mandatory side. Brisket, wings, pulled pork and a few ribs and sides under $30 again. Perfect for a date or father/kid outing. Oink is also making burnt ends. A Kansas City invention.
Gotta Try: Ribs and get a side of the smoke potatoes

Combs BBQ Central
2223 Central Ave, Middletown, OH 45044
I really can’t say enough about this place. It’s out of range for lunch during the week but it quickly becoming my favorite on Saturday’s.
This laid-back spot is part of Downtown Middletown’s rebirth. These ribs are legit, always cooked perfect and the pulled pork has texture, great flavor and that spicy bark you want in every bite. Brisket doesn’t happen every day. Recently I was there when they had smoked an entire pot roast. Delicious on a bun with a touch of sauce. Prices are good and the service is tops and fast.
Gotta Try: Pulled Pork and Ribs
Company 7 BBQ
1001 S Main St, Englewood, OH 45322
Brisket. Check. Ribs. Check. Pulled pork. Check. The best wings in Dayton? Yes. You’ve got my word on it. They smoke wings in a marinade (a wet smoke) then cool them and deep fry them when you order. If you’ve never had them, get up there today. Crunchy outside with a soft smoky interior the wing is in a class all its own. The team of Company 7 is pushing the envelope with lunch specials and a drive-thru. That’s right. A bbq sandwich from a drive-thru. I’ve not timed it from Kettering, but I am considering it.
Bonus at Company 7…beer. More than 20 craft beers in cans and bottles and always a few Company 7 Brews on tap.
Gotta Try: Smoked Wings
I’m always looking for a new spot for great BBQ!  Tell us where yourgo-too place is for great ribs, brisket, pulled pork or barbecued chicken.
