April 22, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

After much anticipation and several construction delays, this Texas based chain will open at The Greene this Monday, April 23rd at 7am.  As part of their Grand Opening Event, the first 50 customers get FREE TACOS FOR A YEAR

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop’s corporate-owned and franchise locations are now serving fresh, handmade Baja-style Mexican food in 81 stores across 9 states, with many more to open soon. This one happens to be corporate owned.   All of Fuzzy’a restaurants offer indoor and patio seating, and their specialties include fish tacos, burritos, nachos, queso, and ice-cold beer. • No returns or exchanges.
  • All Sales Are Final.

Celebrating Yellow Springs Brewery’s 5th Anniversary!

April 14, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Saturday, April 14th Yellow Springs Brewery is celebrating their fifth anniversary of crafting and sharing their brews with the super supportive Ohio craft beer community! Fifth anniversaries are traditionally known as the “wood” anniversary so this celebration has a special significance to them as wood serves as an integral part in aging, conditioning and flavoring craft brews. They’ve decided to show their appreciation to our loyal customers with a barrel- and wood-aged Birthday Bash!

Master Brewer, Jeffrey McElfresh has created a limited release white oak IPA in honor of this special occasion and it will be available in 12 oz. cans for $12 per 4-pack. This IPA is aged with American white oak staves giving it a sweet, earthy bouquet with warm vanilla overtones. Dry hopping lends a piney and grapefruit flavor that enhances the soft character of the white oak. And there’s no better way to enjoy this delicious IPA than in their new limited-edition 5th anniversary glassware! This Perl Goblet style glassware features a design by Just A Jar Design Press in Marietta, OH, and has a delightfully low price tag of $10!

This celebration is loaded with opportunities to obtain limited-edition brewery merch and we will feature a series of timed raffles from 2-9 PM. The day-long raffle includes prizes from House of Aum, Current Cuisine, Dino’s Coffee, The Winds and many more! Raffle tickets will be sold as a pack of 5 tickets for $5 or 20 tickets for $10 and all proceeds from the raffle will benefit Glen Helen Nature Preserve. They will also be on site for the Birthday Bash to hand out special gifts to those who become members during the celebration! Culinary options include the incredible wood-fired food of La Pampa Argentinian Grill and Bella Sorella Pizza! There will also be selling a limited-edition woodcut poster, created by Just A Jar Design Press, which will be on sale for $15. Only 100 of these have been printed!

The hit of the day may very well be the selection of some of the area’s most rare and sought after barrel-aged beers that will be featured on our taps! YSB’s resident beer curator, Chris Hutson, has managed to acquire a list of brews that is sure to please the palate of even the most particular beer geeks out there. Two bars will be set up for timed trappings of our celebratory beers. These taps will occur once every two hours starting at 2 pm with White Oak IPA, with the last tapping at 7 pm! Don’t miss out on this anniversary extravaganza, join Yellow Springs Brewery in celebration of 5 years growing with this amazing community!

French Toast Breakfast Taco Trial – Only in Dayton

April 11, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Taco Bell is trying out French toast as a breakfast taco shell with the recently launched test of the new French Toast Chalupa –  available only here in Dayton.

Taco Bell describes the shell as “fluffy and cinnamony.” The French Toast Chalupa comes filled with scrambled eggs, a choice of bacon or sausage crumbles and a side of syrup and is selling for $2.49 each.   Instead of a shell, it has a taco-shaped piece of French toast which is basically a soft flatbread (AKA their gordita shell) shell that’s been deep fried.

The test item marks the latest in a long line of attempts by Taco Bell at making other foods into a taco shell. There was the  Waffle taco shell, the fried chicken shell, a croissant shell, a quesadilla shell, and a biscuit shell.  We’ll have to see if this one is a winner.  Let us know in the comments below if you try it and what you think!

6 Places to Celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day

April 11, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

National Grilled Cheese Day is April 12. Actually, you can celebrate America’s favorite childhood lunch throughout April, which is National Grilled Cheese Month.

Here’s a quick guide on where to find these  crispy, melty, buttery and cheesy sandwiches around town:

Tank’s Bar and Grill, 2033 Wayne Ave

You can order a regular grilled cheese here, or get the  Tanks”My Way” Grilled Cheese which is swiss, cheddar, provolone, american cheeses with lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, mayo, mustard and horseradish on dark rye.

Coco’s Bistro, 250 Warren St

For the classic combo,  Coco’s Bistro offers up a panko breaded, four cheeses sandwich served up with tomato bisque on their lunch menu.

Dublin Pub, 300 Wayne Avenue

Then Monster Grilled Cheese is cheddar, monster jack and swiss cheeses melted between three sices of toasted sour dough bread (we add bacon to this and order a side of pub fries).  There’s also an option for the Angry Monster which is made with a smoky ghost pepper jack cheese and Irish rashers for those that like it spicy!

The Deli at Webster Street Market, 32 Webster Street

The basic- your choice of any two cheeses on either toasted sourdough or whole wheat bread. Add bacon for 99 cents.  Or for the sandwich pictured below ask for Emily’s Grilled Cheese.

Meadowlark, 5531 Far Hills Ave

Served with fries or vinaigrette-dressed greens Order cheese only, white cheddar, gouda or gruyere, or change up the classic with below additions:
  • Swiss Gruyere with Red Wine and Grilled Onions — Red wine is brushed on the inside of the bread
  • Sharp White Cheddar with Sliced Ham and Homemade Chow-chow
  • Jalapeno Popper Grilled Cheese! Cheddar and cream cheese with grilled jalapenos, chopped Nueske’s bacon, and a drizzle of sweet/tart raspberry sauce

Sonic, 10 locations around town

When you’re on the go this delicious classic cheesy concoction of two thick slices of Texas Toast with classic melted American cheese hits the spot.

Help Make Pups on Patios Legal!

April 9, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Want to drink a pilsner with your poodle or a latte with your labradoodle? While there are some places around town that allow it, currently Ohio bans dogs on restaurant patios due to the health code.   But current legislation is trying to overturn that law!In a letter from one Ohio Health Department they explain “Live animals may not be allowed on the premises of a food-service operation or retail food establishment.  Certain exceptions are allowed, such as a service dog helping a disabled person, as long as the animal’s presence doesn’t pose a threat to food contamination.

The letter concluded that because patios and open air bar-type areas are considered “food premises,” any ”‘pups on porch’ or similar events” are in violation of state health codes.

How You Can Help Change the Law:

A bill has been introduced in both the Ohio house and the senate that would allow the decision to be up to the business owner whether they allow dogs in their outdoor dining areas.

If you are an Ohio resident in support of HB263 and SB182, contact your State Rep. and let them know you want them to vote YES on HB263 and SB182!!

To find your Rep:
Head to www.Legislature.ohio.gov and click on the Contact link; find your 4 Digit zip code extension & contact your rep!

Seafood Shines at Old Bag of Nails

April 4, 2018 By Dayton937

British Style Fish and Chips

A lot of pubs have been popping up around town. One of the most popular has been The Old Bag of Nails Pub in Cross Pointe Shopping Center in Centerville.  The packed parking lot at the corner of Alex Bell and State Route 48 has been steady since the restaurant opening, in November, 2017.

Recently, neighboring Schlotsky’s Deli has closed its doors, making Old Bag of Nails the end cap on Cross Pointe Center.  The Food Adventure Crew has gotten a chance to visit the pub a half a dozen times and have had a good sampling of the menu at different times of the day.  We have found the menu to be pretty seafood dominated, and those were some of our favorite dishes.

Let’s get started giving you the scoop….

HERE IS THE SKINNY on THE OLD BAG OF NAILS PUB:

— The Old Bag of Nails is a chain based out of Columbus.  Owner Mike Purdum and his staff manage 13 restaurants located from Northern to Southern Ohio.

— The menu is extensive and eclectic, featuring favorite pub foods to unique creations you won’t see anywhere else in town.

New England Clam Chowder

— The bar has a great list of craft beers on tap.  Usually from Bells Brewery to local Dayton brews, you can find something for every palate, event the Bud and Miller Lite lovers.

— Located at 101 E Alex-Bell Rd. Suite 191 in Centerville, their hours are 11am-10pm everyday except 11am-9pm on Sundays.

So what’s the best stuff on this big menu?  We can help you there, with our patented .. MUST EATS !

MUST EATS at THE OLD BAG OF NAILS PUB:

— BRITISH STYLE FISH and CHIPS:
Everyday is a fish fry at Old Bag of Nails Pub. This dinner is their big daddy, this is their house specialty. It is a filling plate too, with two huge whitefish filets, thick steak fries and a scoop of cole slaw. If you try one thing on the menu, this should be it ….

— THE NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER:
Oh it is good. Nice and creamy and loaded with clams and potatoes. There is a hint of bacon, but the recipe stays true to showcasing the clams.

Mussels and Shrimp Appetizer

— MUSSELS AND SHRIMP APPETIZER:
Over a pound of Mussels with Shrimp steamed in white wine and butter. The plate is served with Garlic Bread and is a delicious combo.

— BLACKENED SALMON CAESAR SALAD:
A generous slab of salmon over a Caesar Salad bowl (ask for a small salad). The salmon is cooked slightly rare, so if you do not like that, let the server know you want your salmon cooked more.

— DYNAMITE SHRIMP DIP APPETIZER:
An interesting and unique dip made of shrimp, cheese and hot sauce. It is a little bit oily, but strangely addicting. Served with toasted pita triangles, you will find yourself spooning heaps of the dip onto your chips.

—FRIED OYSTER BASKET:
These Oysters are delicious and plump. We recommend this over the Oyster Po Boy because the oysters get lost in the sandwich, sub bun and toppings. The basket is the way to go, but this may be a special and sometimes not available on the menu. Ask your server about this one. The scallop and chips dinner is ok, but the oysters are much better.

—DEEP FRIED CORN ON THE COB SIDE DISH:
This dish is a side option to many meals. It is an option you MUST EAT. Deep fried corn on the cob. It has a splash of butter and Parmesan cheese. Easily our favorite side dish.

Dynamite Shrimp Dip

We have tried many other entrees and apps, but those are the best of the best. We have an extensive photo gallery below of dishes for Old Bag of Nails so please check them out below. The prices are a little higher, but that is because seafood specialties are typically higher in price. Shrimp Lovers will love that Wednesday nights is an all you can eat shrimp and chips deal, so they can get their bang for their buck.

If you aren’t a seafood fan, go for the Specialty Cheesburgers.  Old Bag of Nails has a couple big options with lots of delicious toppings.

The decor is nice and open.  Service is sometimes slow, but that is because a lot of the menu is homemade.  Good things come to those who wait….

Salar To Return This Summer

April 3, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Salar Restaurant and Lounge co-owner and executive chef Margot Blondet announced that she has signed a lease for her popular chef-driven concept, marking her comeback to Dayton’s diverse culinary scene. Salar will re-open in the summer in its former Historic Oregon District location on 400 E. Fifth St.

The upscale French-Peruvian fusion eatery suffered devastating loses after an early morning fire broke out on Dec. 29, forcing the staff to cancel more than 350 New Year celebration reservations and the restaurant to shutter temporarily.

In asking Chef how she’s been filling her time, she shared , “I think I’ve worked harder in the last couple months working with the insurance company, re-negotiating the lease and dealing with the architects.  It’s been a real roller coaster of emotions, and by the way I don’t like roller coasters or surprises.”

“It’s time to get cooking again,” says Blondet, “The love and support that the Dayton community has shown me and my restaurant family is overwhelming. Now, we’re ready for the renovation journey that will refresh Salar with new ideas while honoring what our guests have come to cherish from our culinary and bar program.”

She says they’ve been cleaning and packing away things that can be salvaged to get ready for the renovation and making manuals for the new vision.

The interior design vibe will evolve to embrace current trends, with a color palette that’s lighter, airier and more inviting. The new layout begins with a lobby that leads to a new wine and main bar area that will accommodate more guests than before, complemented by an expanded wine and spirits menu. A larger outdoor dining area will enhance the experience of customers wishing for an al fresco ambiance.

“While the loss was heartbreaking, starting over has given me the opportunity to dream bigger, to be more creative and to take more risks,” adds Blondet. “Dayton, I’m coming for you. Expect to be wowed.”

The construction phase will commence soon, pending permitting, and will continue through the next few months.  The building will be getting new a new HVAC system, new electric and plumbing.  It will be like a brand new building  with a grand re-opening expected in the summer. Construction updates and new information will be posted as it becomes available on Salar’s social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.

Hurry up, we can’t wait Chef Margot!
