Warped Wing Brewing Co. and Century Bar Collaborate On Kette’s Pride!

November 3, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Century bar has started construction on Kette’s Kandies. The Century’s new 1920’s inspired speakeasy cocktail bar.

From 1909-1913 the building at 10 South Jefferson Street was home to the Kette and Sons Whiskey Company. But during the flood of 1913, their building was destroyed by fire. Afterwards, Kette, seeing prohibition looming, exited the whiskey trade and opened a candy store. “That inspired the name and store front for our new speakeasy lounge”, said Century’s Joe Head. “It’s a great story and we want people to experience the rich heritage Dayton had during that place and period in time.”

To help kick off the project, Century Bar and Warped Wing Brewing Company have collaborated on another barrel-aged beer. “The Kette’s made and sold rye whiskey, so we decided to use rye whiskey barrels as our aging vehicle”, said Head. “And because my favorite style of beer is Porter, we worked together with Warped Wing’s Brewmaster John Haggerty to develop the beer. “The beer is coal black in color with aromas of cocoa, vanilla and bourbon and notes of dark roasted malt, bourbon and hints of wood with tannins from the barrel”, says John Haggerty. “We’re calling it Kette’s Pride. The name is a tip of the hat to Kette who was and will be remembered as a Dayton icon”, according to Nick Bowman, VP of Sales & Marketing for Warped Wing.  Kette’s is 8% ABV.

This very limited draft only release will be available at Century Bar next Wednesday, November 8th.  The Century will host a toast event at 5pm to celebrate the kick-off of construction at Kette’s Kandies. It will also be available in the Warped Wing taproom.

Luminaries of Dayton: Leslie C. Mapp and Mikesell’s Potato Chips

November 1, 2017 By Angie Hoschouer

Mike-sell’s Potato Chips. A Dayton Favorite!

Mike-Sell’s was founded in 1910 by Ohio native Daniel W. Mikesell. Mikesell was born in Miami County, Ohio, in 1883. In 1906, when he was 23, Mikesell moved to Dayton with the desire to start his own business. He started out working for a wholesale and retail dry goods store before serving a short stint as a collector for the Home Telephone Company. Finally, in 1910, he started his own venture. He saw advertised in the newspaper a used dried-beef slicing machine. He bought the contraption and set up a makeshift meat shop in two rooms next to his home. He started selling dried beef and sausage snack foods that he processed with his machine. He delivered his products to customers via bicycle. Mikesell upgraded his delivery system to a horse and buggy after a few years. At about this time, Mikesell became engaged in the potato chip business when he took advantage of an opportunity to purchase equipment designed to manufacture chips, which were relatively unknown in Dayton at the time.

According to legend, a chef named George Crum invented the fried food at an upscale resort in Saratoga Springs, New York, when railroad baron Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt sent his french fries back to the kitchen, complaining that they had been sliced too thick. Disgusted, Crum sliced thin shavings from a potato and threw them into hot oil. After they had fried to a crisp he sent them back to the table, to Vanderbilt’s delight. “Saratoga chips,” as they were first called, became popular throughout the eastern United States. With help from his wife Mikesell began producing the chips with a few cooking kettles, baskets, and stirrers. The operation was truly vertically integrated, with Mikesell and his wife peeling, slicing, frying, packaging, and then delivering the tasty potato chips to customers.

Customers who tried Mikesell’s unique fried potato chips loved them. Mikesell continued to deliver snack food products other than potato  chips, because most people considered the chips a seasonal picnic item, but it was clear that the chips were a big hit for the fledgling venture. Indeed, the Mikesells eventually employed their four children peeling potatoes to keep up with demand. Mikesell marketed the chips through county and state fairs, and the entire family traveled during the summers to operate the D.W. Mikesell Co. booth at such events. The Mikesells lived in a tent while traveling and sold the chips out of a glass case, scooping them into nickel bags. In 1913 Mikesell purchased a Ford delivery truck. Evidencing Mikesell’s penchant for innovation, his was the first delivery panel truck in Dayton. The side of the truck was embossed with a new, more descriptive moniker: D.W. Mikesell Co. Food Specialties.

Fast forward to 1965. After the death of Dan Mikesell, leadership of the chip company fell to Leslie C. Mapp. Under Mapp’s direction during the next 30 years, Mike-Sell’s expanded geographically, retained its quality focus, and continued to be an industry innovator.

Les Mapp’s rise to the presidency of Mike-Sell’s was the embodiment of the American dream. His parents had immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s with the dream of owning farmland. They achieved that dream in Ohio, where the elder Mapp became a successful dairy farmer. Mapp received his education in a one-room schoolhouse near Springfield, Ohio, and then attended Bliss College in Columbus for two years before completing his degree at the Dayton Young Men’s Christian Association night school (later named Sinclair College).

Early in his career Mapp was an administrative officer of the Miami Valley Milk Producers Association in Dayton. He helped that organization multiply several times in size during his tenure. It was also through that job that he became involved in numerous trade associations. Mapp, with a broad food industry background, eventually joined Mike-Sell’s and in 1952 was named chief administrative officer. He oversaw the construction of a new manufacturing plant in 1955 and was integral to the implementation of modern manufacturing and marketing techniques during the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to updating and expanding production facilities during the 1970s and 1980s, Mike-Sell’s reached out into new geographic markets on the perimeter of its established customer base. In addition to his success at Mike-Sells, Mapp was a leader in the snack food industry. In 1977, for example, he was elected head of the Potato Chip/Snack Food Association, International, for which he established several new programs including key legislative initiatives in Washington, D.C.

Leslie C. Mapp was born September 15, 1912 and died April 2, 2005 at the age of 92. He is resting peacefully in Section 61 Lot 1624 at Woodland Cemetery.

Daniel W. Mikesell was born March 12, 1883 and died May 19, 1965 at the age of 82. He is resting peacefully at Dayton Memorial Park in Section 2 Lot 490.

All Good Things Must Come To An End…

October 27, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

I can remember when I had my first Zombie Dogz experience.  It was the horror themed truck’s very first outing in the Lowe’s parking lot on Wilmington Pike in 2012 and the idea of a hot dog topped with decadent things like macaroni and cheese, taco meat and fritos  just seemed so decadent.  In talking with Lee VanArtsdalen, who is the co-ower with her husband Dave, we reminisced about that first outing, where they served 68 people, she even remember my order!  Dave’s love of all things Zombie brought them to their second gig for the truck,  serving up their street eats at  the annual HorrorHound Weekend, where they were bombarded with  30,000 people to feed.

Zombie Dogz Food Truck

And from their the legend just grew.  Often the most popular truck at a rally, fans would line up and wait times often hit an hour for the growing list of gourmet hot dogs with an ever changing menu of ingredients.  Their popularity continued to grow and in 2016 they were named “Best Food Truck in Ohio” by Ohio Magazines in the annual readers poll. That same year they finished 2nd as 2016 Hot Dog Vendor of the Year poll in the national contest rum by Mobile Cuisine.

In the winter  of 2016 rumors started swirling about a brick and mortar location of Zombie Dogz and MostMetro was able to confirm the rumors in June and on Sunday, NOVEMBER 13, 2016 the doors opened at 1200 Brown Street.

Business a the shop has stayed steady, menu items have been added (yeah tots and White Truffle Mac n Cheese) and the truck continued to be out and about around town.  The menu continues to rotate with some of the more popular dogs being brought back for limited runs, while new dogs are introduced.  In June of this year they even introduced flights of coney sized versions of the gourmet dogs, so you can enjoy multiple creations.

But Today Zombie Dogz posted this on their Facebook page:

What’s up everybody. So, we are winding down our FOOD TRUCK season and wanted to fill you in a little bit. What we’re about to fill you in on is kind of sad. You may have noticed that we don’t make as many FOOD TRUCK posts lately. Well, there’s a reason………. I think after running long and strong for 5 years our little baby has come to an end. We don’t make posts anymore because we aren’t sure if half the time our trucks gonna make it!!! It’s pulled 12,000 lbs and has several tens of thousands of miles under her belt, and unfortunately she’s coming to an end. She’ll hold up for the rest of this months scheduled events, but after this month, we’re putting her to rest?????. So, with this being said, I’d like to list the rest of our events left for this season.

Stay Gold Dayton ????✌?

In talking with Lee she shared “this is so bittersweet.  The truck was a dream, we grew and nurtured and Dayton welcomed us.  But after 5 years the wear and tear on the truck and the trailer are dealing showing.  The generator is dying and the repairs to the trailer were becoming to much.  But we have the bricks and mortar location and we can really just concentrate on that now.”  But as we chatted about the changes over the years, and the birth of her 2 children and all the friend they’ve made in the community, and how the storefront has been a game changer for their business. She also let slip, that perhaps, in time, the truck could come back to life…just what we might expect from a Zombie!

Zombie Frappuccino Invaded Starbucks Today

October 26, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Starbucks fans got a new option today- the Zombie Frappuccino.  The green base is flavored with tart apple and caramel with a red mocha drizzle and topped with “brains” made from pink whipped cream.

While we’ve seen mixed reviews online, one thing is sure- Starbucks was thinking Instagram when they designed this one.  We’ve already seen hundreds of photos and it’s only been available for about 12 hours.  It’s available for a limited time only: today, October 26, through Halloween, while supplies last.

“We thought about what you’d serve at a Halloween party, and we settled on dipped caramel apples,” said Jennica Robinson of the Starbucks beverage development team in a release. “It has a tart green apple flavor balanced with a smooth, sweet caramel.”

Starbucks has been offering  Halloween-themed beverages for that last few years, offering a Franken Frappuccino in 2014, and a Dracula-themed Frappula Frappuccino in 2015 and 2016.

New “Gypsy Brewers” Launch A Brewing Company

October 25, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Have you ever felt drawn to an abandoned building, compelled to venture down a seemingly innocuous side street at random, or curious why everyone looks mechanical and mindless walking to work?

These curiosities can be explained by psychogeography; how certain environments can shape the way you think and feel. The art of immersing yourself in new and different psychogeographical environments is called a Dérive, or an urban drift; allowing yourself to be conscious of the objects affecting your current surroundings and how they influence the layers and flow around you. This term perfectly describes what the founders of Dérive Brewing Company hope their customers experience while drinking their beer; an impulse in spontaneity, going against the grain, sticking your noise where it doesn’t belong.

Dérive is composed of Luke Sherrill and Peter Steffes of Columbus, and Michael Coates of Dayton. With over a decade of brewing and craft beer industry experience they bring a wide collective of ideas  and knowledge. Luke Sherrill is currently completing the Master Brewer Program at the world-renowned Seibel Institute in Chicago. Peter Steffes works in Research and Development at a major
International food company holding a degree in Food Science, and brings a wealth of knowledge around wild yeast and bacteria. Michael Coates has worked and brewed in the craft beer industry since 2010 and holds a degree in Business, allowing the company to utilize effective, low cost marketing strategies to enable grass roots growth so they can focus time and energy on quality and product.

Initially, Dérive will have no brick and mortar, no place to call home. They will utilize the space and equipment of various breweries to produce and package their beer known as “Gypsy Brewing”.

Dérive’s brewing process will allow for a unique experience every time; influencing both the brewing process and the way the beer evolves. Their primary focus will be centered around oak aged beers, spontaneously and oak fermented beers, Saisons and sessions. With contract and barrel brokerage agreements in place, their production will begin to steadily ramp up in November.   Dérive’s first two public offerings will at this year’s Festival of Barrel Aged Beers in Chicago, November 10-11th and just recently added to Big Beers and Barelywine in Dayton on November 10th.  Due to FoBAB’s rules and regulations, they are legally bound from releasing the names/styles of their submissions at this time. However, the following offerings will be offered up at select taprooms in Dayton and Columbus later this fall including: a 100% Brett Fermented IPA, Salty Saison, Traditional Mix fermentation Saison, Session Pale and a Baltic Porter. For more information please visit facebook.com/derivebeer and please follow Derivebeer on Instagram for regular updates and news.

Archer’s: 1st in USA to Tap Riegele Beers from Germany

October 24, 2017 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Archers makes International Beer News

Sometimes Food Adventures happen by the glass…

We have some big news in the world of beer, and we do mean WORLD.   It is happening right here in Dayton, Ohio on October 26th.

A world-renowned German Brewery, Brauhaus Riegele, is introducing 2 of there beers into the United States.  Riegele Brewing Company, The 2017 International Craft Brewer of the Year has chosen ARCHER’S TAVERN in KETTERING and CENTERVILLE as the VERY FIRST RESTAURANTS in the UNITED STATES to serve two of their beers.

These two beers are:
1) AUGSBURGER HERREN PILS:
The brewing process guarantees the delicate freshness of this premium pilsener, which is unparalleled. Delightfully hoppy and flowery, it has a wonderful aroma. It is tingling and balanced while being lean, soft and drinkable without any bitterness.

2)RIEGELE AECHTES DUNKEL:

German Brewery

A shiny dark craft lager, this one is a real and rare Bavarian specialty. In Germany it is one of the most sought after of the dark German styles, Aechtes “Genuine” Dunkel has built a reputation on years of craft brewing with only the finest and rare double-toasted Bavarian malts. This elaborate procedure guarantees the balanced, roasted, and aromatic taste. The beer is unpasteurized, dark, and real.

Riegele Brauhaus in Augsburg, Germany

Both beers will be tapped on

Thursday October 26th,
6pm at Archer’s Kettering – 2030 East Dorothy Lane

Thursday October 26th,
7pm at Archer’s Centerville – 9496 Dayton-Lebanon Pike

David Klass, CEO of Luxe Brands and importer of Riegele, will be on hand at both restaurants for the tappings.

Archer’s Tavern has always been known as a fantastic spot to get Ohio beers, and beers from around the United States.  Now they make an international mark too.

We can’t wait to get a pint of the new beers…

Food Adventures will be on hand at the Kettering location and hope to see some familiar faces.

As always, both restaurants will be serving up their signature affordable tavern fare, with attentive service.  If you feel a nice burger, wings or pizza in our future.. that’s just the start of the full menu they offer for the whole family.

National Bologna day is Tuesday the 24th.

October 23, 2017 By Bryan Suddith

There is a short list of foods that defined my childhood. My father was born and raised in Alabama and my mother is a native Ohioan with roots in Appalachian Southeast Ohio. I grew up on beans and cornbread (Alabama influence) and midwestern staples like Meatloaf, Salsbury Steak, and Tuna Casserole.

However, for a quick lunch, nothing hit the spot like a good Fried Bologna sandwich.  We ate them two ways. Fried with mustard on white bread or with breakfast on toast with a fried egg. We never had it with cheese. If we had cheese we just ate a cheese sandwich. Fried bologna eaters fall into two camps. Those that cut the bologna halfway across the diameter and those that don’t cut. The Suddith’s are solid no cut people. Of course, the bologna curled up into a big dome and the edges got a bit more done than the middle, but that is how we do it. We are split on toppings. No cheese ever, but we waffle back and forth between mayo and mustard. Always on white bread, never a bun.
This week I am celebrating and I invite you to as well. Hasty Tasty is my go-to for fried bologna on sandwich bread. Georges on North Dixie does it really well and they dress it up with lettuce, tomato and make it a bit prettier.
I have also found a good sandwich in the least likely of spots, and that is local wing joint Frickers.
Here are the details. Celebrate responsibly and let us know in the comments, cheese or no cheese, mustard or mayo.
Hasty Tasty
or as the old timers call it, Bunny’s.
3509 Linden Ave, Dayton, OH 45410
5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily
Bologna as a side for breakfast. One of the few in Dayton. Off menu, ask for the bologna sandwich. Trust me. They’ll make it.

George’s Family Restaurant
5216 N. Dixie Dr. Dayton, OH, 45414 (937) 275-0705
Monday – Thursday 7AM-8PM
Friday and Saturday 7AM-9PM
Sunday 7AM-3PM
It is located low on the menu, dressed with lettuce and tomato, and comes with cheese, chips and a pickle, $5.75. Hard to beat this classic sandwich in a classic American diner.

Fricker’s
Locations across Dayton
Open daily 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.
Yes. The Wing and Beer place.
Yes. Fried bologna on a bun. You can add a special sauce but I opt for mustard. The bun is nice and holds up well to the thick slab of bologna.
