Stivers Showcase of Student Films

May 8, 2014 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

Showcase14b.sbkOn Tuesday, the 20th of May, at 7:30 pm, at The Neon Movie Theater on 5th Street,
Stivers School for the Arts, Film/Video and Animation Studio
will Present THE SHOWCASE

This eclectic compilation of short films includes absurdly comedic work, as well as hard hitting documentaries.

Some of these films have already won national and regional awards. Following the show, there will be a Q & A with the student filmmakers.

Tickets will be $5.00 during the pre-sale and $7.00 at the door. Tickets are available at the Neon box office and at Stivers in room 1206, the Film/Video and Animation Studio.

The Showcase has been going on for over 7 years and is the culmination of students work for the 2013-2014 calendar year.

These students are in either the Film/Video or Animation class.  They range from 7th graders to graduating seniors.  Most of these students are visual artists taking this class as an elective.

All proceeds go towards updating and replacing equipment in the video and animation studio.  We have a huge turnover of students and have to deal with broken equipment.

Additionally with the constant changes in the industry we also have equipment that just requires updating.  Donations of equipment or money are always accepted.

Alvoro Leite and Alex Mangen are the studio directors.  Both are graduates of the Wright State University Motion Pictures Production Program and have over 20 years of teaching and actual production experience between them.

Local Teen Gets A Lifetime Opportunity With A ‘Can’ Do Attitude

January 20, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

1536590_10202964525783801_159142115_nMadeline Mobarry is your typical teenage girl.  She is in her junior year at Northmont.  She is currently looking at colleges for when she is done with high school.  Madeline hasn’t decided on a school just yet.  She is in the process of trying to tie down on where she wants to go.  In the meantime, she has started doing some college courses through a program that is available for her at school.  This past weekend she was part of the production of “Seussical!” from the Muse Machine, playing her double bass.  She also plays in the Northmont Orchestra, and Northmont Jazz Band.

Madeline, like everyone, has big dreams and big goals that she wants to achieve.

Her determination and drive has led her to reach some goals at an early age.  During the summer between her 7th and 8th grade, she needed to find a way to fund her trip to the class trip to Washington, D.C.  The two fundraisers Madeline could have partaken in were not really helpful so she had to go a different direction.

She devised a plan that was different from what most would do to make money-she started collecting aluminum cans.

Aluminum cans were all around Madeline.  At her home, her school, her families homes, the park, etc.  She received cans from her neighbors, the indoor soccer complex in her hometown in Englewood.  Other businesses helped Madeline with her collecting of the cans.  In the end, she made enough money to go on the trip.

Mobarry has been playing since her 5th grade year when she had to decide on either playing an instrument or singing.  She also picked up on the double bass because her father plays bass.  After a while, she wanted to go and try out for the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Strings group.  The gathering of cans gave her the ability to pay for the double bass that she plays with and she got in.

Over the past few years, she has attended the Mozart Festival in Athens, Ohio, which she spent a week at Ohio University and has also attended the Miami Valley Jazz camp.  With the experiences she has obtained, she decided to go one of her biggest goals to date.

In June, Madeline has been chosen to participate and be a member of the International Youth Symphony Orchestra (a part of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program).  The IYSO – an extension of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp program – encourages creativity and the motivation of young people to achieve  in the arts, while also creating international understanding through the arts. Madeline is the only person in the Dayton group that has been invited.  Rehearsals will be at Blue Lake, which is located in Michigan, and they will be visiting France, Germany  and Luxembourg.

In order for her to pay for the trip, Madeline once again hit the pavement looking to see if anyone would be willing to help  her.  She has contacted  a 100-plus businesses, hoping that they give her the chance to maybe have a shot on making this  dream a possibility.  The amount she needs in order to go is $4750.  One organization received her email, and immediately jumped on board was Involvement Advocacy.

“I received e-mail from Madeline and then I received a call from her shortly after”, explained Peter Benkendorf, who is founder and president of Involvement Advocacy in Dayton.  The group recently held the event Drum Dayton in downtown back in the beginning of November.  “I do not know many teens with the drive and the confidence to do that.”  Benkendorf soon met up with Madeline, and decided that we would help her on the journey towards making enough to go on her trip.   Benkendorf has set up a special scholarship account at Involvement Advocacy allowing folks to make a tax-deductible donation. Madeline has already raised $1250 and the Involvement Advocacy wants to reach the goal balance of $3500.

In the meantime, Madeline is keeping focused on her goal.  She keeps churning out time on her double bass and collecting cans from various establishments and anyone who wants to help.  When you sit down with her, you hear a teenage girl who is well beyond her years.  With this huge goal on her shoulders, you would think that trying to achieve this vision would become overwhelming.  Especially when you have the schedule like she does.

Yet it doesn’t even appear to get to her.

It’s easy to do be that way when you have big dreams that you want to make happen.

Here is how you can help Madeline reach her goal and help her live out a dream:

Together We Are Greater…Dayton

November 11, 2013 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

“Morrison elementary students bring hundreds of cards to Dayton Children’s Hospital as part of Shoes4theShoeless “Kindness Matters” campaign!”

Together, individuals and communities across the region create Greater Dayton. And through working together, we are a greater Dayton. It’s simple. It’s true. And now, that spirit of volunteerism – those people who make Dayton greater – get a moment in the limelight. The Dayton Foundation invites individuals and groups to connect right now through their newest social media campaign.

Last month, The Dayton Foundation launched the “Together we are Greater…Dayton” social media campaign on the Foundation’s Facebook and Twitter accounts to increase engagement and dialogue with fans about the philanthropic and leadership efforts happening in the Dayton Region.

Chris and CP Mentee

“I truly believe in the mission of the College Promise program in helping to give students from lower income families the same opportunities as other kids. My College Promise mentee is such a beautiful and kind young lady. I’m so proud to be helping to lead her to her dreams of an education and a bright and promising future. #Togetherwearegreater…Dayton”

The campaign encourages Dayton-area residents to show how they are making Dayton greater. Fans on the Foundation’s social media pages were asked to share photos and short stories about how their volunteer activities or charitable support is helping to make a difference in the community. Photos get uploaded to the Foundation’s “Together we are Greater…Dayton” Tumblr account.

The Dayton Region has a long history of individuals helping others in times of need. It is this passion and commitment of everyone working and participating together that helps make Greater Dayton great. This was celebrated at The Dayton Foundation’s annual meeting November 6 with highlights demonstrating the camaraderie of donors, not-for-profits, volunteer and the community.

GET INVOLVED: The campaign concludes this Thursday on November 14, 2013.  So, hurry up and snap an action shot or submit a photo and tell The Dayton Foundation (and the wider community) what’s happening to make Dayton GREATER.

S.W.O.R.D. To Hold Charity Fencing Tournament

November 1, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

644168_431850903556281_1243054666_nA fencing and epee tournament benefitting Saint Jude’s will be held on November 9, 2013 at S.W.O.R.D. at 813 Leo Street in Dayton, Ohio.  The event will start at 10 AM with a 9 AM registration time for participants.

S.W.O.R.D. is the South Western Ohio Recreation and Defense School started in 2012 in order to serve the Dayton community of martial artists and has expanded over the year to serve the Dayton dance community as well as providing a venue for banquets, film festivals and film classes.

Fencing has long standing roots going back thousands of years but was codified in the form that is known now across the world in the late 17th Century.  The form developed to allow combat exercises with a sword that were not necessarily deadly but still utilized the same sword combat forms.  Epee is a modification of the fencing tradition which does away with some of the more esoteric rules found in traditional fencing.

The tournament is open to participants who are class C and below as ranked by the USFA rating system.  But you don’t need to be a fencer to attend – the general public is welcome to observe the action.

The price of admission for competitors is $25.00 for one weapon or $40 for two weapons.  There is no admission fee for attending to observe the event.  Prizes for the competitors include USFA rating standings and trophies. Food and drinks are available for purchase during the daylong event.

For more information on this event and S.W.O.R.D. please contact William DeVan, founder of S.W.O.R.D., at 937-223-5569.  More information is also available at S-W-O-R-D.com or on Facebook at SWORDayton.

Rubi Girls Event Features Film

July 13, 2013 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

Film is a powerful medium for education, advocacy and entertainment. Jonathan McNeal, who many know as the manager of The MakeUpNeon Movies downtown, is a filmmaker with a story to tell. He created a short that shared some of the stories of the Rubi Girls and their great work in HIV/AIDS awareness and entertainment. McNeal’s film is a centerpiece of a special event planned for August 3 – their Decade of Decadence Party.

The Rubi Girls documentary premiered in San Francisco in 2003 and has garnered awards and played around the world. In celebration of the tenth anniversary, The Rubi Girls invite you to their Decade of Decadence Party and Film Screening. Combining live performance, interview and archival footage, the documentary not only traces the history of the group and their madcap antics, but also attempts to redefine the term family values. The evening will include the film screening, a live Rubi Girls show and a Q&A followed by the kind of after party you’d expect to be thrown for this milestone event. The after party will include a DJ, a few additional Rubi performances, hors d’ouvres catered by Veritas Events, operator of Roost and Leo Bistro at The Dayton Art Institute, cash bars and other terrific Rubi surprises. (More info and tickets)

The Rubi Girls are Dayton’s beloved, comedic drag troupe…who now have helped to raise over 1 Million Dollars for HIV and LGBT-related causes.  What started as something just for laughs on Rubicon Street in the late 1980’s has blossomed into a FUNdraising phenomenon. FilmDayton spoke to filmmaker and Rubi Girl Jonathan McNeal to learn more about the evening and his experience with how his film has sparked conversation and advocacy.

Q: How long have you been involved with the Rubi Girls and what has your experience been like?

I’ve been with The Rubi Girls since the late 1990’s.  I was a fan first…a groupie even.  Once they found out I was a film student, they asked me to start videotaping their shows.  Eventually, as I got closer with the group, I started taking the camera backstage, too.  (Backstage was just as fun as what was happening on-stage.) After a year or more, I started to really become part of the family dynamic that was happening, and they eventually asked me to start performing with them.  Though I never would have asked on my own, it was what I wanted all along.

Q: How did the idea for a documentary come about?
I did research on a different documentary for about a year, and I determined it would be too expensive to pursue.  A friend said, “There’s a great story happening right in your own backyard.  It might be familiar to you, but it’d be a fresh story for a lot of people.”  That’s when I decided to start exploring the idea and asking if The Girls would be game.
 McNeal1
Q: Even as a group insider, did you learn anything from the process of creating the film?
I was still relatively fresh to the group when we started filming.  Though I had performed for almost two years with the troupe, I had missed out on over a decade of their evolution.  Asking questions and digging for answers taught me a lot about the history that I didn’t know.  In addition, the process of making the documentary helped me realize why the group was personally so important to me.
Q: Where has the film been shown and what kind of reception have you gotten?
The movie premiered in June of 2003 in San Francisco.  Immediately after that first screening, numerous LGBT film fests invited THE RUBI GIRLS to screen at their festivals.  That was a really great way to see the country…it played in Seattle, Chicago, Reno, Atlanta, Fire Island and many other cities.  Audiences loved the movie and loved the Girls, and a few awards were garnered along the way.

Q: What’s your feeling about bringing this film back to the public 10 years after its creation?
It’s great to bring the film back to the community where it all started, but interestingly, the movie has had continual play since its premiere.  Several colleges and organizations have used the film over the years for various reasons – either as an educational tool or part of a festival or celebration.
Wigs
Q: What’s the goal of the evening for you?
The goal of August 3 is true with the mission of The Rubi Girls.  We want to create a space that is vibrant with fun and creativity…that also allows us to spread the word about what’s important to us and our causes.  We always bring some component of HIV/AIDS awareness to our shows, and fundraising is a major aspect of what we do.  The Rubi Girls have now helped to raise over 1 Million Dollars for HIV and LGBT-related causes…and that’s something we’re very proud of.  The money raised during this event will be split between The Dayton Art Institute (to be used for sound upgrades in their auditorium) and RubiBenefits (to assist with a variety of causes that we support).
Q: And anything else you’d like to share/add?
The support of the Dayton community has been incredible.  The love from the press, the admiration and generosity from the fans, and the willingness to assist from so many local businesses has been instrumental to our success.  This embrace, combined with the success of the documentary, has allowed us to spread our message to numerous cities across the country, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.
Join the Rubis on August 3 to support RubiBenefits and help with sound upgrades for the DAI auditorium.

McKenzie’s 8th Annual Lemonade Stand for Cancer

June 7, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

ddn061710hzlemonade_714643aCan’t believe this is the 8th year for McKenzie’s lemonade stand. McKenzie has raised almost $20,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This year we are going back the where it all began at Bill’s Donuts and holding our stand in conjunction with National Lemonade Days, which is when Alex’s parents hold their stand too.
This is the first year that McKenzie will have a committee of her peers and they will do most of the planning! If you have any suggestions or would like to donate a raffle item please let me know.
The story behind it all!

When McKenzie was 4 years old I came home from a business trip in Las Vegas with a colorful butterfly pin. Attached to the pin was a letter from Volvo with the story of Alex and her amazing Lemonade Stands. Alex was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma when she was a year old. When she was just 4 years old she told her parents she wanted to have a lemonade stand and send the money to doctors to help find a cure. Alex passed away in 2004 at the age of 8 after raising over a million dollars by selling lemonade. Her spirit and drive to find a cure are continued on through her foundation, alexslemonade.org.
After hearing Alex’s story, at the age of 4 McKenzie said she wanted to have a lemonade stand too! This is McKenzie’s 8th year holding an Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
With your help she can break the $20,000 mark this year!!!

Comedy For A Cause at Funny Bone

June 3, 2013 By Nikki Nett 2 Comments

ok2We have all seen the destruction caused in Oklahoma by the recent tornadoes. Many have wondered what they can do to help. Well, it looks like you can laugh to help out.

No, we aren’t being mean. The Dayton Funny Bone is donating proceeds from not one, but TWO shows this week.
Thursday, June 6 and Sunday, June 9 the always hilarious, Vince Morris will be headlining these fundraiser shows.
[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGNeJ-yx1TY’]
Dave Glardon will be the feature comic both nights. Chris Alan with be the emcee on Thursday will Adrian Cosby filling that role on Sunday.

The Funny Bone is even allowing 2 guest comedian spots for these shows. One slot is being filled by Tracy Cooper, and the other spot will be filled by a local comedian that is really trying to get the word out via social media. Who might that be? The organizers say they will award that spot who doses the best job promoting this show and they will  announce that soon (in the meantime, comics…they’re watching you).
Tickets are $5 each, and all proceeds will go directly to the United Way in Oklahoma.  If you can’t make it to one of these shows but would like to make a donation, you can call the Funny Bone at (937) 429-5233 and tell the ticket agent you’d like to “buy” tickets (at $5 each), but will not be able to attend.  That way they can take your donation, but leave the seats open for somebody who will be able to attend.  The club will also accept donations at the door if you feel inclined to give a little extra.
