3rd Chiapas Now Open in Miamisburg

The third areas Chiapas Mexican Grill opened this past weekend on  Kingsridge Drive in Miami Twp. They took over the space that was once Thai Kitchen, and enlarged it into the space next door.  There are 2 brightly colored dining rooms and this family owned business describes themselves as “a vibrant slice of Mexico right here in Miamisburg.”

The restaurant offers a similar menu to the Moraine and Centerville locations, featuring tacos, enchiladas, burritos, fajitas.  Their lunch menu is served Monday – Saturday until 3:30pm.  The bar serves up 4 different margaritas, beer, wine and daiquiri’s.

Duante’s Fond Farewell to his Favorite Dayton Foods – Part 1

All things come to an end, and we knew at some point Duante Beddingfield would leave us.

Many of you know him from his work covering arts and events over the years here at Most Metro or the local newspapers. Some of you may know him from his jazz performances, singing at venues like Gilly’s, Blue Note, and the Levitt Pavilion. Maybe you’ve listened to his Monday night jazz show, Equinox, on WYSO over the last three years, or attended Stivers School for the Arts with him, or salsa danced with him, saw him hamming it up onstage in a play or at a karaoke bar, or maybe he supported you as an artist or small business owner. Maybe he pissed you off at some point. Even if you’ve never met him, you probably knew Duante. 

We’re proud to be the first to announce he’s been hired to be the new arts and culture reporter for the Detroit Free Press. And proud to say we had him first! He’ll be leaving Ohio soon, but he asked if he could write one last thing on the way out. If you know Duante, you know he’s not only a major foodie but was also a professional restaurant writer in town for years, and so we’re presenting his list of the top ten restaurants he’ll miss most when he moves to the Motor City. 

Duante was never known for keeping things short, so we’re posting it in two parts… Here’s part one – see part two here!

Chicken Head’s (aka The Chicken Spot) (3261 W. Siebenthaler Avenue, Dayton)

Decades from now, when we regale our great-grandchildren with stories of The Chicken Sandwich Wars of the Early 2000s – of the Colonel’s ridiculed surrender to General Lee’s, which led to the Donut Treaty; the fall of the Burger King during the Battle of the Black Bun; of the bloody Chick-Fil-A Crusades, which divided a nation and pitted brother against brother – one name shall ring out as the baddest mothercluckin’ in the buck-buck-buckin’, and that name is Chicken Head’s.

Opened just over a year ago as The Chicken Spot (only the name has changed, nothing else) in a tiny storefront on the northwest side in a time when businesses were closing left and right in that part of town, it was seen by many as a high-risk, sentimental move by chef-owner Anthony Head when a downtown or suburban opening would have all but guaranteed major success. And yet, success came quickly anyhow. 

The superiority of the product (which I’ll get to in a moment) was undeniable; that was never in question. What mattered is that it was standing up and providing for an underserved population. West Dayton has received national news coverage for years as one of the country’s largest per-capita food deserts. But not only are fresh groceries too often out of reach for west side citizens; dining options in the long-blighted area are extremely slim. Save for a few low-level fast food shops that have been in place forever, no new food-related businesses open doors in that part of town. I know because I grew up there in the prosperous eighties and nineties, and watched it rot and die around me before I finally pulled up stakes and moved to a more convenient neighborhood across town because I was tired of driving 45 to 60 minutes one way for not only my bougie artisan cheese, but for bread and jeans and movie theaters and someplace I could take a girl on a date. 

When The Chicken Spot opened, delivering a good product, made well, reasonably priced, right there in the hood City of Dayton leadership has firmly ignored and disserviced for years, two things happened among the people who live around there. It sent a message to them saying, “We’re here for you. This isn’t a chain – it’s one store. If other people want us, they’ll have to come to us. We’re here for you.” The other thing is the community recognized that and agreed, “We see you, and we love that you’re here for us. We’re gonna show up for you.” And they did. 

And so did everyone else. Chef Head is no fool. With a deep background in corporate business leadership, a long history in culinary education in the region at both the secondary and collegiate levels, and name recognition in the dining scene as a groundbreaker and rainmaker, he knew what he had, and he knew what he wanted. The shop is nothing to speak of. No tables, no dine-in. Carryout only. It’s a small commercial kitchen with a tiny lobby to wait for your food, which will be handed to you in the kind of greasy, nondescript paper bag that can only mean great times lie ahead. Very low overhead, maximum profit. Not even a website, just a Facebook page. Why pay for marketing when you have a product so good the word of mouth works for you? Head’s name and connections would do most of the marketing. I mean, look…here it is, happening in real time while you read this, and he doesn’t even know I’m writing this.

And the word took mere days to spread. Soon, people of every background and income level were driving in from the far suburbs (places I refer to as “The Deep South,” like Miamisburg, Washington Township, and Springboro) and Way Up North (y’all know who y’all are) to get this damn sammich. Everybody was talking about it. The menu was based around it, a very limited menu that focused on doing a few things and doing them best. 

So let’s talk about The Medusa.

Thick, marinated, breaded, fried chicken breast, on a sandwich bun, topped with home collard greens and mac and cheese, plus pickled onions. An entire soul food dinner on one sloppy, impossible sandwich. I don’t know what to tell you. It’s life-changing. Throw a slice of the pound cake in there for dessert, you got all you need. 

Chicken Head’s praises have been sung by every regional publication. They eventually, reluctantly, joined Doordash, and later expanded their delivery area to seven miles, so you can enjoy the Medusa or a bag of jumbo wings in your home as far away as WPAFB base housing, West Carrollton, New Lebanon, and Brookville. Go to them, bring them to you…it doesn’t matter. The Medusa is the single most talked about menu item of the last year in Dayton. If you haven’t had it yet, get on board. (Facebook)

Pasha Grill (72 Plum Street, Beavercreek)

When I think of Pasha Grill, no matter what I’m doing or how I’m feeling, a smile immediately comes to my face. Mediterranean food, with a heavy emphasis on Turkish, is the focal point of their menu, and it yields some of the most complex, gorgeous flavor profiles you can find within a day’s drive. 

Let me start by saying I have tremendous respect for this place because when it opened in 2008, it was the only locally owned restaurant at The Greene Town Center, Greene County’s sprawling, hotly contested outdoor mall development that opened in 2006 with a flight of chain restaurants, bars, and shops, delivering major blows to downtown Dayton, the Dayton Mall, and The Mall at Fairfield Commons all at once. We saw other locally owned restaurants come and go over the years, unable to keep up with The Greene’s high rent, and a couple of times over the years it’s looked like Pasha was all but done, but they’ve thrived over and over, and they’re still with us. Pasha Grill is a survivor, and that makes me rabidly want to see them supported indefinitely. 

The great thing about Mediterranean food is it’s equally rewarding for vegetarians and omnivores. There are great, delicious options to be had on all sides, and there’s plenty available for the vegan and gluten free. The same, honestly, is true of pretty much any non-American or UK-related cooking, ha. Let me tell you about the Shepherd Salad. Plum tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, bell peppers, and parsley tossed in red vinegar and olive oil. It’s dynamite. There’s a small and a large – but even the small is large, just FYI. There’s the vegetarian mousakka, basically a veggie lasagna with layers of eggplant, potato, carrot, zucchini, and mushroom with bechamel sauce, topped with mozzarella and tomato sauce.

And for the true meat lovers, there’s the grill section of the menu. There are nine different types of kebab, all ranging from roughly $15 to $22, and depending on which one, they come with veggies and sauces and such. But if you order the Mixed Grill Kebab for $31.95, you get half portions of FOUR types of kebab (made from chicken, beef, and lamb, each with different seasonings and flavors), plus a bunch of pillowy fresh bread, rice pilaf, and grilled vegetables. It’s an absolute steal, enough to feed two or three (or four, if you’re light eaters or just kind of picking at it as tapas with wine), and is probably the best value in Dayton for the amount and variety of food you get. It’s worth it to pay a couple extra bucks and tack on an extra side of rice pilaf and an extra side of grilled vegetables. They literally bring you an entire, huge tray of just different meats. God, it’s glorious.

They’re also on Doordash. And, let me tell you…on a chilly evening, a delivery from this place can really light up your night. They deserve our support. (website)

 

9. Chiapas Mexican Grill (298 N. Main Street, Centerville)

When it comes to tacos around here, you simply cannot beat the ultra-authentic, soul-warming offerings made in-house by the folks at Chiapas. For five years running, downtown Centerville has been blessed with the flavor and value this place brings, and a new second location in Moraine will celebrate its one-year anniversary next month. They feature my favorite chorizo queso (they run a little small here; I always order two), and their chicken and al pastor tacos never fail to satisfy (though they also have steak, chorizo, carnitas, fish, shrimp, and tongue, if that’s how you get down). The tortas (super flavorful Latin sandwiches) and soups (don’t miss the pozole!) are wonderfully down-home in their approach, and as with any Mexican restaurant, there are a number of familiar dishes and combos…but make no mistake, this is not just any Mexican joint. 8. El Meson (903 E. Dixie Drive, West Carrollton)

When it comes to other forms of Latin cuisine, look to this popular regional destination that’s still got new things to say in 2020. “El meson,” in Spanish, can mean a country tavern, but it can also refer to an inn, or a large table. Any or all of those feel appropriate here, where the Castro family invite you in as gracious hosts to enjoy a meal with them. 

The staples remain over time, things like the overstuffed empanadas, addictive chicken tinga nachos, Cuban sandwiches, and famed tortilla soup. But the thing I’ve always had tremendous respect for is that El Meson never rests on its laurels, with the Castros complacent to keep a winning formula the same with the old “If it ain’t broke…” attitude. They’re always changing things up, always finding new ways for people to experience and interact with food and culture. Entrees rotate on and off the menu regularly. In non-Covid times, elaborate trips are organized annually to take groups of customers to Latin countries where they dine like citizens and delve into the lifestyles that gave birth to the dishes we love. Fun and informative, themed tastings and catered dinners are held almost weekly. They’re still among the only brick-and-mortar restaurants to take advantage of the food truck explosion, with vehicles traveling the area frequently. And this month, they’ll introduce Viva La Vida, A Recipe for Life, a video subscription streaming service where Bill Castro and chef Mark Abbott will provide monthly content about food, wine, cocktails, cooking techniques, and traditions from around the world. 

The paella, a time-honored Spanish dish, is the jaw-dropping, signature house specialty (and the tart and tangy, vegan-friendly aji dip, which can also be purchased by the container, is always a big hit). A favorite for me is the carne asada fries, a rich, messy, smoky pile of punch-in-the-mouth flavor priced for one, but big enough for two and leftovers. Have it with a big, bold Spanish or Argentinian red wine. 

It’s cool that El Meson always delivers the things you love, exactly as you remember them. But what’s even cooler is that the Castros use that consistency and comfort as a platform to continue pushing themselves and the restaurant forward, and to bring us along with them, so that while you’re never let down, they never give you the same experience twice. 7. Zombie Dogz (Food truck)

Damn, damn, damn. One of the first, and certainly one of the most seismic, casualties of the Covid-19 among the local restaurant scene was Zombie Dogz, which operated in brick and mortar form on Brown Street after rocking the region since 2012 as a food truck that cultivated a monster following for its premium hot dogs with wildly inventive toppings and horror-themed names. (The Dogz boast over 40,000 Facebook followers, equivalent to around 30% of the City of Dayton’s population; the Dayton city government itself has fewer than 35,000 followers on Facebook). 

Though the restaurant has closed its doors, the beloved truck still preys by day and stalks the night, appearing at all corners of the metro area to serve long lines of customers, some of whom drive in from other counties or cities to carry back stacks of dogs for friends and relatives. I’ve waited for hours in freezing temperatures and pounding rain to scratch that itch that only the Dogz can, and I know many of you will continue to. 

I’ve got a soft spot for my early favorite, the Dead Dixie, with diced green apples, barbecue sauce, bacon, and bleu cheese hitting an insane four-points combination of sweet, sour, salty, and umami. And I love the Waking Dead, a breakfast dog with bacon crumbles, sausage gravy, a fried egg, and maple syrup drizzle, taking the trophy for messiest meal in the Valley. But the big winner is the seasonal Germanator, a stunner topped with garlic-crusted beef, homemade beer cheese, and fried onions. And keep an eye out for the holiday season, when the Poultrygeist becomes available for a limited time. A giant hot dog heaped with white meat turkey, Stove Top stuffing, homemade gravy, and drizzled with original cranberry sauce? That’ll make your heart and your stomach grow three sizes, trust!

6. Old Scratch Pizza & Beer (812 S. Patterson Road, Dayton)

A giant from the moment it opened, this place slings high-quality, creative pies that keep people coming back again and again. I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve picked up from them for family nights during the pandemic. Old Scratch’s team of master pizzaioli take great pride in their work and can be seen from anywhere in the main dining hall as they work their craft in tandem,  like a fine tuned machine. Beer on tap, wine by the carafe, and a full bar with bartenders who are always fun and highly skilled make this as great a place to stop in for a happy hour with friends as it is for dinner with your household. Winning appetizers are the meatball tray and the whole roasted cauliflower. You can’t go wrong with any of the pizzas, but – and this is surprising coming from a red-sauce junkie like me – the white pizzas are where their innovation really shines, with options like the prosciutto arugula, which basically comes with a huge arugula salad on top of an already sumptuous pizza, and the Brussel Crow, with brussel sprouts, wilted shallot, taleggio cheese, bacon, and an apple cider reduction. The salads are massive meals unto themselves (not joking – they’re very, very big), and a soft-serve machine by the door sends kids home smiling. As the next cold spell moves in during 2017 and you are craving a soup to warm your heart, consider this list.  The Food Adventures crew, Chef House, Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu, have compiled our list of Dayton’s Best Soups for 2017.  From the first steaming spoonful, to that little bit of liquid left in the bottom, these are the best bowls of chow that the Miami Valley has to offer.  So, all you serious eaters, get a spoon, get some crackers if need be, and check out our list of MUST EAT soups.

1) CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP from FRESCO:

A top soup from one of Dayton’s top Chefs and caterers, Jenn DiSanto.  She starts with homemade chicken broth from scratch.  The soup is stocked with fall off the bone chicken pieces, vegetables, and tortilla strips. End it all with a dollop of sour cream on top.  This is one of those moments where you lose yourself in a heavenly bliss. This is the best chicken tortilla soup we have ever eaten.  This soup is Chef House’s favorite !

2) THE GUMBO at RUE DUMAINE:  
This one HAS to be on the list..  The owner/Chef Anne Kearney studied under Food Network superstar, Emeril Lagasse.  Needless to say, when it comes to New Orleans’ flavors, she knows what she is doing.  This award winning chef has a menu unparalleled n Dayton.  We have found the perfect start to a meal at Rue Dumaine.  This pick is an obvious one.

3) THE CLAM CHOWDER at JAY’S SEAFOOD:  
When a soup is a Dayton icon and a Dayton staple for decades, it has to make the list.  Whether you are 8 years old, or 80, people love this soup and have fond memories associated with it.  The creamy broth, the chunks of fresh clams, and the perfect dash of pepper make this soup.  Crackers or not, you are in for a treat when you sit down for a cup or bowl of this deliciousness… so go for the bowl.  As you take a spoonful, the nostalgic atmosphere of Jay’s restaurant helps make it that moment in time where the world is in perfect balance.

4) THE SIZZLING RICE SOUP FROM CHINA COTTAGE:  
For decades they have been serving this white meat chicken, fresh vegetables and steaming rice kernels in an unforgettable broth.  This is on the appetizer menu as a soup for two.   Sure you can get this soup as an appetizer for two, but who wants to share something this good?  Get the soup for your meal, like we do !  The flavor is a perfect balance of mushrooms, carrots, other vegetables and rice in a white meat chicken and broth mixture.  Another great creation from Chef Tiger Wang.

5) SATE SHRIMP AND PORK SOUP with RICE NOODLES from LITTLE SAIGON:  

This Vietnamese style “Pho” soup is a spicy bowl of broth, rice noodles, shrimp, pork and vegetables.  Served with a side plate of cilantro, lime and bean sprouts, it packs some heat.  Not hot enough?  Doctor it up with the table side chili paste or a homemade in-house sriracha sauce.  This is a meal sized soup, with an appetizer price tag.

 

6) DUBLIN PUB’S “WORLD FAMOUS POTATO SOUP”:

It must be world famous, because it is downright incredible.  It is rich, filling and sinful.  We suggest getting it in the Sourdough bowl and add cheese and bacon on it.  We also recommend taking a nap after you eat it.  This soup has a cult following in  Dayton, and is Hungry Jax’s top pick!

 

7)  THE CABBAGE ROLL SOUP from VOLTZY’s ROOT BEER STAND:
The best soup in a root beer stand in the United States.  Voltzy homemakes this stuff with cabbage, tomatoes, rice and his signature burger meat. In his words, it is so delicious,  you will sing “Touch me in the Morning.”  Cabbage rolls not your style? Then try his almost equally delicious “Cheeseburger Soup” or “Cream of Vandalia Onion Soup.”  Yes, Vandalia like the city… Voltzy is nuts, it is undeniable.

8) THE TURTLE SOUP at THE AMBER ROSE:
This soup is exotic, thick and hearty.  It is a  old recipe, passed down by Elinore, the previous owner of the restaurant.  We absolutely love Amber Rose’s take on this old school favorite.  It is beyond good.  This is one of those things that you eat and immediately want more.  Visit Joe Castellano and his chefs and try it for yourself as an appetizer to one of their Eastern European meals.  Extra points for uniqueness on this one.

9) CLAM CHOWDER at SWEENEY’S SEAFOOD: 
Creamy and thick with chunks of clams and potatoes, this is a filling bowl of soup.   Paprika and other spices, finish the flavor, making this soup one of our favorites.  We already are in love with many of Sweeney’s appetizers that owner Lisa Long and her chefs knock out of the park.  Add another star to the list.  Hungry Jax can’t get enough of this one.

 

10) SEAFOOD CHOWDER from DOROTHY LANE MARKET:  Maybe because it

simmers all day, it enhances the flavor.  Whatever the reason, we are entranced with this self serve option to go at Dorothy Lane Market for this incredible soup.  Rich and creamy and two terms that simply cannot be stressed enough.  Chunks of fish and more fill the soup with corn and other vegetables. This is a nice, thick soup. We can’t inhale it fast enough on hungry rainy days.  If there ever was a bowl you wanted to lick clean, this would be the one….

11) CHICKEN GUMBO from DISALVO’S DELI:
Another homemade soup from scratch.  Chef Ronnie DiSalvo himself makes the soup with perfectly carved, generous chicken pieces, in a delicately light broth.  The bowl is filled with a treasure trove of vegetables and tremendous flavor.   This deli takes pride in its food, and this is another example of their incredible creations.  Their motto is “made with love from the heart.” And we like to add, and straight to your mouth!

 

12) THE SHRIMP and PORK SOUP at LINH’s BISTRO:  

The Shrimp and Pork Soup from Linh’s Bistro

A big fan following for this soup.  It is an enormous bowl with filled one of the classic Vietnamese “Phos” (soups) offered at Linh’s Bistro.  This meal sized magical creation contains broth, shaved pork and pieces of shrimp.   Sure you can get it with clear rice noodles, but we prefer the egg noodle option (#34 on the menu). Vegetables and scallions also line the bowl, but that’s not all.  The soup is served with a side plate of jalapenos, bean sprouts cilantro and lime.  Separate some cilantro leaves from the stems and drop them into the bowl.  This soup defines the words Food Adventure.

 

Doubleday’s French Onion Soup

13) THE FRENCH ONION SOUP at DOUBLEDAY’S GRILL & TAVERN:
Lets be honest.  Any one of Doubleday’s soups could make this list.  In a restaurant known for their homemade soups, this one is a favorite.  Dayton  regulars have stuffed the restaurant for decades, and many have felt the hot, gooey dripping flavor of the french onion soup.  It is easy to get lost in Doubleday’s large menu, but dont overlook this “must eat.”  The steaming pot of soup is perfect for a snowy day.  Try their Chicken Pot Pie Soup and Potato Soup as well.

 

14) THE NEW ORLEANS STYLE GUMBO at JIMMIES LADDER 11: 

The New Orleans Gumbo from Jimmie’s Ladder 11

Hearty, rich and just the right spiciness, this soup is one of those “OMG” moments when you take a bite.  Owner Jimmie Brandell is no stranger to soups, having managed one of the iconic “Upper Krust” locations for years.  The soup is perfect.  They really hit the mark on this one.  Order a bowl and wake up your taste buds.  Goes perfect with their craft beer selections and sandwiches!

15) THE CLAM CHOWDER AT BULLWINKLE’S: 
Clam Chowder at a rib place?  The answer is yes, young Jedi.  This soup is homemade and downright addicting.  Generous chunks of clams in a mix of potatoes and cream sauce make this one of our “Must Eats.”  Not many people know about this soup, but now you do.  We are not responsible for any addictions.  Make sure you start your meal here with this savory favorite.  Their menu is filled with amazing items like this one.

16) THE CHILI AT ARCHER’S TAVERN:
Every year, Archer’s holds a chili cookoff.  The winning chili goes on the menu for a year.  All proceeds from the contest go to the Centerville High School’s Culinary Arts Program!  The result is an amazing chili and a charitable donation!  The current chili is a meaty concoction with a little bit of heat. It is topped with cheese and Fritos.  Probably the spiciest of the delicious soups and one of our favorites.

 

17) THE MUSHROOM BISQUE at CHRISTOPHER’S RESTAURANT:

Vegetarians  rejoice!  This Dayton soup is for you.  A fresh, home made delicious recipe means a warm feeling in every spoonful.  The taste of the fresh mushrooms is incredible  Christopher’s thrives on making quality, homemade soups, and this choice is the star.  Check it out and pair it with one of their delicious sandwiches.  The restaurant atmosphere is homey, and lends to the comfort factor of feeling at home with this warming soup for the soul.

18) THE WILD MUSHROOM SOUP FROM HAWTHORNE GRILL:
It is pure comfort in a bowl.  The soup is creamy, bold and flavorful.  Hawthorne Grill puts out some great dishes, and this is one you need to get your hands on.  This weather is the perfect time to try this unique, homemade item.  Chef Candice Rinke has established herself in the upper tier of Dayton’s chefs.  This soup is an extension of her hard work.

19) THE PICKLE SOUP from BLIND BOB’S:
Don’t be fooled by the sound of it, don’t judge a book by its cover.  This is one of the best soups in Dayton.  The flavor isn’t sharp, it is surprisingly mild and rich.  If you like cream of broccoli soup, this is an even better spin on it.  We congratulate Blind Bob’s for not only the uniqueness, but for the amazing taste.  This is a great warm up right before you try one of their burger selections!  Also, Blind Bob’s many craft beers go great with this soup!

 

Vegetarian Chili and Tequila Chili from Lucky’s Taproom

20) TEQUILA CHILI at LUCKY’S TAPROOM:  
Unique blast of flavor from the kitchen at Lucky’s.  Owner Andrew Trick has developed an underground following for his terrific food. This chili is a highlight on the menu and one of the most loved items.  Lucky’s offers a regular or vegetarian option.  Recommendation: There is no better pairing on this list than the Tequila Chili and one of Lucky’s numerous craft beers.  So go to Lucky’s, thumb through the beer booklet, pick one out, and thank us later.

 

21) THE GUINNESS ONION SOUP AT NICK’S RESTAURANT:  

French Onion Soup at Nick’s Restaurant

Gooey, warm, and wonderful soup that is the pride of Xenia.  The soup is always made from scratch buy their “soup nazi.”  This soup is served in a unique bowl, with a mound of cheese and few gigantic croutons.  But what hit us most is the rich flavor.   Hot broth dripping down your chin, as you swallow some of the cheesey strings.  Take a spoonful and you will immediately see why this soup made the cut.

22) THE COCONUT SOUP at SIAM PAD THAI: 
Another exotic choice on this list.  Cherry tomatoes, lime juice and mushrooms highlight the ingredients in this soup.  The tangy, light flavor make this soup the most refreshing on our list.  Owner, Fon Chrisman is a culinary genius in Thai food.  If you have not been to Siam Pad Thai, we suggest you pair this soup with one of their Thai dishes, or specialty sushi rolls. We promise you will be craving this soup in no time.

23)  THE HOT AND SOUR SOUP at YOUNG CHOW:  
We scald ourselves every time, because we cant wait to get into this soup’s shredded goodness.  A perfect balance of tofu, pepper and pork, this hot and sour soup is fantastic.  This soup made the list because it is just that good.  And guess what else, the price is nice.   We looked at your fortune cookie, it says you need to go to Young Chow.

 

24) TANTANMEN RAMEN at RAMEN RICKSHAW: Also known as “Peddler Noodles,” this soup is the epitome of homemade.  Freshly made, daily noodles seeped in a pork broth that has simmered for 12

hours. Flavorful secret spices and green onions finish off the soup.  Served in a small bowl, we can use a fork, spoon or even drink this delicious soup, just to get it in our bellies.

 

25) TOM YUM SOUP at TIK’s THAI GRILL:  A spicy broth filed with mushrooms and green scallions.  They also call this “Lemongrass Soup.”  It also includes a secret combo of Thai herbs, lemongrass, tomato, and lime juice.  The lime juice packs a punch right back to the lime juice that started the whole thing.

26) TOM YUM GOONG SOUP from HOUSE OF THAI:
Shrimp and mushroom in a hot and sour broth is the amazing menu item featured at this hidden secret in Beavercreek known for their Pad Thai.   Not many people are familiar with this delicious Thai restaurant, but the soup deserves a spot on this list.  It is obviously an old family recipe, and it is as fun to eat as it is to say the name.  This is chin dripping, grab your napkin style good eats.  If you are going to do it up, do it up right at the House of Thai.

27) CURRY UDON NOODLE SOUP from ARIAKE SUSHI BAR :  A thick, soup with curry flavors and a nutty aroma.  Slices of pork, egg slices and wheat noodles fill the bowl.  It is a challenge to eat this without getting your chin or shirt dripped on, but the noodles are fantastic.

28) THE SPICY VEGETABLE SOUP from KABUKI:  This soup is complimentary with big dinner orders.  It is a fantastic mix of spicy pepper broth, bean sprouts and onions.  This can clear your sinuses and make your cold feel better all at the same time.  It is the perfect tune up for a sushi feast.  Enjoy the color and aroma of the soup, it tastes as good as it looks.  We have come to learn that at Kabuki, everything is great.

29) THE POZOLE from CHIAPAS MEXICAN GRILL:  The owner of Chiapas tells us this is his grandmother’s recipe for a chicken and hominy soup.  The broth is soothing yet spicy.  The chicken is tender and shreds of it soak between hominy corn.  Radishes float on top of this beautiful looking soup.  One of the most unique soups on this list, it is authentic Mexican fare.

30) PULPO CAMARONES COCKTAIL en SALSA (Seafood Gespacho) from TAQUERIA MIXTECA
Served cold, this tomato based soup is stocked full of seafood.  From huge shrimp, to baby octopus and calamari, it is not for the squeamish.  Hardcore seafood lovers, however, will eat it up.  It is served in a gigantic goblet and is easily enough for two or more.  The vegetables and slices of avocado make the soup.

 

We have two honorable mentions:

With the wacky weather lately, the saying, “Chilly today, Hot Tamale” applies here.  Of all of the Mexican eateries in town, only a handful can claim to be “authentic” to the Mexican people’s tastes.  These menus are not Americanized, but are true to the way people dine in Mexico City or Chiapas, Mexico.  Simple, fresh ingredients and simple, homemade recipes.  Authentic is the case of Chiapas Mexican Grill in Centerville on State Route 48. The small diner is a perfect atmosphere for an authentic, Mexican Food Adventure.

As you know, what makes our food blog different, is that we visit a restaurant many times before we write a thorough article.  If a place shows promise, we revisit, and go on different hours, and different days and try almost every dish on the menu.  That way, one can

REALLY get the feel of the place.  Not just a one or two plates and a forkful of a friend’s dish, we are talking full Food Adventure experiences.  That is our philosophy to share with you reliable feedback on the very best spots in the Miami Valley.  After at least a half dozen visits to Chiapas Mexican Grill, we are here to give you the full scoop and some incredible photos.

From Horchata cinnamon like milk drinks with our friend Elsa, to Chimichangas and Enchiladas during Sunday football, we ate it all and are ready to share the goods.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on CHIAPAS MEXICAN GRILL:

—Located in the heart of Centerville at 298 N Main St.  The quaint dining room seats about 50 people.

—Locally owned operation by a family from Chiapas, Mexico.  One of the owners used to work at Las Piramides restaurant in Centerville.  He finally convinced family members to get in on his plan to own their own authentic restaurant.

—Menu features family recipes and dishes from their town of Chiapas, which is at the most southeastern part of Mexico, near Guatemala.

—They are open 7 days a week with special prices on Margaritas on Mondays and Fridays.  All tacos

Each meal starts out right, with warm tortilla chips and some excellent salsa, packed with fresh cilantro.  Now that your tastebuds are warmed up… We present to you the best of the best of their menu… our patented feature ………… MUST EATS !

—TAMALE’S:
The best tamales we have ever had, hands down, Chico.  We know their secret.  They use banana leaves instead of corn leaves.  The bbq sauce, the corn mush and the pulled pork combine for a taste we have never experienced before. Our mouths are watering for more.

 

—IN HOUSE HOT SAUCES: IMPORTANT! Take advantage of the 2 homemade in house hot sauces, one red one green.  They are great to add to your salsa to thicken things up, or squirt across your dinner of choice.  Also dive into the bottled sauces on the table called El YucatecoXXX and Cholula

—TACO’S – SOFT and CRUNCHY:
The soft tacos are incredibly authentic, and are made with soft CORN tortillas which is, of course, the difference.  No cheese on the soft ones, just meat, onions and cilantro.  All tacos are served with lime quarters.  Grab these quarters, and squeeze every bit of lime juice onto your taco meat.  It makes the whole thing.  All the taco meats are good, but our top 4 soft taco meat choices you “must eat” are : a) Chorizo, b) Shepard Style (rotisserie pulled pork), c) Chicken and d) Carnitas (steak).  Don’t forget to add some salsa or house hot sauce.

The crunchy ground beef taco is delicious and loaded with lettuce and shredded, white, Mexican cheese.  Don’t forget to order one of those.

Get your butt in here on Mondays, when all tacos are $1.99, for a feast you will not soon forget.

 

—CAMARONES ALA DIABLA (Spicy shrimp): Large, perfectly pan seared shrimp, in a plate with hot sauce, rice and beans.  We got lost for a moment in our plate.  What woke us up was the  powerful flavor and HEAT! This is definitely a MUST EAT.  Good dish, make sure a soft drink, water or beer is near, Gringo.  Wow, was this dish something to write home about.

—CHICKEN FAJITAS: Served sizzling from the kitchen, the result is a nicely seared collection of chicken, green peppers, onions and tomatoes.  Served with lettuce and tortillas on the side, along with sour cream and guacamole, you have the building blocks for an epic fajita creation.

 

—CHILE RELLENOS CHIAPANECOS:
Oh man, this dish is the best of both worlds.  It is two, large stuffed peppers on a plate.  One is filled

with cheese, and the other is filled with ground beef and potatoes.  The results are one of the best chile rellenos plates we have ever eaten.  It has plenty of cheese sauce, salsa and rice so you can use the extra tortilla chips to make your own nacho scooping end to this dinner.

 

—TORTA DE MILANESE (chicken):
A huge sandwich, with a lightly deep fried chicken breast inside.  This is a big, delicious sesame seed roll, with all the fixins.  Each half could be a lunch sandwich on its own.  Eating this will have you yelling “Arrriba.”

 

—FLAN:

Flan, an incredible dessert

A delicate little dessert.  Like carmalized vanilla pudding with whip cream and cherry, the caramel drizzle sauce is naughty too.  We are not going to lie, we each could have eaten four of these, they were that good.

 

Honorable Mention:  

—POZOLE:
The owner’s favorite.  It is a spicy soup filled with chicken and hominy.  The warm, red broth will soothe your soul. The recipe is a family tradition from Mexico and like almost all of the menu items, a recipe from their Grandmother.

—THE GOLD MARGARITA: 
A family favorite.  Try it frozen, walk out smiling.  No shortness of tequila here.

 

**Note: We learned something on our trip to Chiapas.  Every table has a ketchup bottle from a company called “Tip Top Ketchup.”  We read the label and realized it was a local condiment company from Tipp City.  It went perfect with the fries on the Torta plates and kids cheese quesadilla plate.  We have found ourselves a new ketchup alternative.

The small sign in the window says Taqueria, which means a place where tacos, burritos, and other Mexican dishes are made and sold.  That is an understatement.  This place is a treasure.  The building has housed eateries from Poor Richards and the Hungry Elk to Wrapsody, Roc-a-Fellas, and House of Kabab.  We look to see this one stay a while. Chiapas Mexican Grill, you’ve come a long way, baby!

The Quest For Dayton’s Best Taco!

DaytonMostMetro.com joined up with Bryan’s Burger club and set out to find the best taco. The afternoon started at one of Dayton’s newest Taquerias, Chiapas Mexican. Located on St. Rt. 48 in Centerville, near Bill’s Donuts we easily found space for 10 on the patio.

We surprised them with 10 people so service was a little slow but the tacos were great. Soft and warm corn tortillas were filled and full of flavor. Chicken and beef were the favorites. Chiapas has a very nice Chorizo taco that is almost sweet behind the spice of the Mexican sausage. Beef tongue is a classic choice and was enjoyed by two members of the Taco Crawl team. These tacos are served with cilantro and onion. A salsa verde and red hot sauce are on the table as well. I like mine with a little of the house salsa and nothing more. Chiapas tacos are the real deal at were at the top of the price range at $2.75 each. If you are south of town, this is your stop.

Our tour took us into the heart of downtown to the famed Taqueria Mixteca. Located on East 3rd St, Mixteca is a downtown staple. Located just east of Keowee a few blocks they serve a top-notch taco. I was impressed with the chicken taco. Great spice and cooked well. Other favorites of the group were the fish taco, Chorizo with some spice, and the ground beef. Again, cilantro and onions are standard. Tacos are $2.35 each, fish, tongue, and shrimp are in the $3.00 range.

We were in an out of Taqueria Mixteca in record time to catch the Taqueria Garcia Mobil food truck located a block away before it closed at 3pm. $2.00 tacos out of a food truck and this place was the crowd favorite. They serve a Chorizo/Chicken taco that has the best of both worlds in one fold. Spicy Chorizo and savory slow cooked chicken under some cilantro and onion with a squeeze of lime. Add their Salsa Verde and grab two napkins. We got there late so they were out of Tripe, the group tried the other offerings, the steak (Asada) and pork (Al Pastor). For the price and service, you can’t beat this food truck.

Tired with three stops under our belt, or over it, we made our way to Taco Loco located on Burkhardt near Spinning Road. By far the friendliest service by the nicest staff. 10 of us stopped in on what had become a cold rainy afternoon. The place was full with families enjoying full plates of Mexican fare. The quickly rearranged tables and set about getting us more tacos. Tripe is available on weekends and their steak and chorizo tacos were enjoyed. None of us has the nerve to try the gizard taco.  The chicken was nothing to write home about and was the only low point of the day. The atmosphere and service made up for it. Prices as low as $1.90 for beef, chicken, pork, and chorizo, tongue and tripe tacos were in the $3.00 range. Great service and a great menu make this a place to return to.

Did we find the best? Positively. Our group agreed they loved each place and enjoyed tacos at every stop. The food truck won our hearts and stomachs. The staff at Taco Loco won us over with hospitality and patio dining at Taqueria Mixteca and Chiapas is a great way to spend an afternoon with friends. Now a gastro intestinal look back at the food year that was… 2015.

Who burst on the Dayton food scene in 2015?  Who left us forever, breaking foodie’s hearts?  The Miami Valley saw a lot of comings and goings this past year.  Food Adventures is here to review the list and get your comments on the gains and losses in 2015.

The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House, have put their heads together for “The Year in Dayton Food.”

WHO SIZZLED ONTO THE SCENE in 2015?

BAD DOG, NICE TACO:  It is part “on site food vendor” and part catering/delivery business.  This company has really turned some heads with the delicious dogs, tacos, nachos and omelettes served at various events and breweries.  Co-owner is our very own Chef House who has evolved the business over 2015 to include delivery and catering.  Fresh, local ingredients is the philosophy of Bad Dog, Nice Taco and the inventive toppings and salsas are sure to excite your taste buds.  Launched in July 2015, we look for more innovative food from them in the new year.

BAGGER DAVE’S BURGER TAVERN: A chain with big burgers and regional craft beers.  They boast no walk in freezers and serve all their meat fresh.  Did we tell you that they make their own soft drinks too? Every Thursday, Bagger Dave’s features 50% off craft beers.  Expect this place to be packed with thirsty patrons!  The Big Ragu says – Get an appetizer of deep fried artichokes and stick to their specialty burger menu page, you won’t go wrong.  Also, some of the best chili in town.

BENNETT’S PUBLICAL: Miamisburg’s newest sports bar just opened at 67 S. Main Street.  Coined a “family sports pub,”  The atmosphere is very nice with a wood, oak and old brick rustic feel.  Yet it keeps an inviting elegance about it.  We love sports bars and their specialty is wings with spiced breading.  They also have gravy fries.  Yes Dayton, gravy fries.  We need this place in our life.  Did we mention bacon wrapped, Gorgonzola stuffed dates? The Big Ragu  says cancel all of his appointments… see ya there.

 

CHIAPA’S MEXICAN GRILL: “Authentic” Mexican food comes to Centerville.  The buzz has been good, with raves about the tacos.  A small, clean casual joint, Chiapas is a perfect place for a quick bite or a relaxed meal.  We look forward to trying it as soon as the opening crowds subside.  Early feedback says it is similar to both Taco Loco and Taqueria Mixteca.

 

CHUY’S TEX-MEX:  A chain restaurant that invaded both Austin Landing and Fairfield Commons Mall this year.  Known for great guacamole, huge portions and a strange Elvis shrine & Mexico connection, it is a fun, party atmosphere. The Elvis love continues with Menu items called “Green Chile fried chicken” and “The Elvis Presley Memorial Combo” featuring enchiladas.  With other entrees named “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” and Burritos “as big as yo’ face,” how can you not love this place?

Dayton Beer Company opened a huge location downtown on Madison St. featuring 36 Ohio beers on tap !

CORNER KITCHEN: If your food is made with love from scratch, people will crave more.  That is the philosophy of The Corner Kitchen on the corner of Fifth St and Wayne Ave.  Great excitement surrounded the opening of this restaurant, and they have delivered with a delicious menu.  We look for big stuff in the future from the culinary duo of owners Jack and Natalie Skilliter.

 

DAYTON BEER COMPANY, DOWNTOWN: This new location could not be more different than the original Dayton Beer Company on Dorothy Lane.  The downtown location on Madison Street, is huge.  It is a warehouse atmosphere with a Hofbrau house feel.  The giant facility features an outdoor patio, brewing area, seating and the enormous bar.  The bar showcases a huge selection of 36 beers.  The beer menu is listed on wooden planks above the bar.  Only Ohio beers are featured,  As kegs blow, workers will scramble to climb a ladder and replace a plank with a new beer choice or replacement.  This is what a brew house should feel like.  Congrats to owner, Peter Hilgeman!

 

DONA MARGAROTA’S:  A Mexican restaurant that opened in Yellow Springs in 2015 has been catching some rave reviews. The owners have transformed a former KFC into a nice little Mexican diner.  We here the steak tacos are a must eat !  The place definitely has personality and people with a passion for food behind it.
ELE CAKE BISTRO & WINE BAR:  This sleek little bar in Austin Landing also serves small plates from ribs to ravioli.  Of course besides a nice wine and beer selection, they have a full line of coffees.  But this is Ele, the legendary desserts here are a must to either eat in or take home.  A great place to treat yourself after a rough work day, or a perfect place to meet a friend for a drink!

FRONANA: Robert Walker has a hell of a product.  A healthy, all natural banana based ice cream like dessert that is healthy and tastes sinful. In 2015, he went from just a bike/cart peddler to a brick and mortar business on West First Street.  One of the most inventive guys we have met, his personality and service with a smile has attracted ice cream lovers from all over the Dayton area.  Did you know you can find his stuff in Dorothy Lane Market and Dot’s Market, too ?

 

GREAT STEAK & AMERICA’s TACO SHOP: A split store featuring the old mall food court standard “Great Steak and Potato Company” menu and the edgy chain of “America’s Taco Shop” who features Tacos al Pastor and Carne Asada.  Cheesesteaks and Tacos anyone?  Sounds like a great Food Adventure stop.

 

IHOP: After 3 decades, The International House of Pancakes is back and plans to expand locations in Dayton.  Get ready for more whipped cream as the Miami Valley is going “Rooty Tooty Fresh n Fruity.”  Does anyone remember the IHOP on the corner of 725 and 741 where Waffle House is now ?   We do and wonder do they still have the strawberry, blueberry, butter pecan, and boysenberry flavored syrups?

KETTERING GRILL AND CAFE:  An extensive menu, and they serve breakfast all day?  We just fell in love.  From the pasta dishes, to the breakfast, our meals have always been stellar.  Located at 3800 Wilmington Pike, we look for some more great food to be served by this spot in 2016.

 

MACK’S TAVERN: Owner Mackenzie Manley has a passion for serving good food and drink.  Mack’s Tavern first burst on the scene before they opened by winning the “Best Bloody Mary in Dayton” competition.  Since then she has been tweaking her family recipes and coming up with inventive menu items.  From the Boar Bites to the inventive pizzas, or signature Mack n cheese dishes, this menu is perfect for tasty late night food or lunch.

MARILYN GRILL: A new soul food restaurant is in business on 143 N. Main Street,  They even feature a Sunday buffet.  Ribs, Wings and Pulled Pork are some of their specialties. Mouthwatering photos of Cheesesteaks on their Facebook page warrant a visit by themselves!  We have a Food Adventure date reserved in 2016 for these guys!

NELLY’S CHICKEN: A family owned business that really just changed locations from West Carrollton to 79 S. Main St. in Centerville in 2015.  They also kicked up their concept a notch.  Bolivian spiced, rotisserie chicken is the mainstay of the menu.  Authentic Bolivian side dishes add to the exotic menu as does the atmosphere.  The Santillan family are friendly and own the eatery. They have incorporated many family members into the business.

NIBBLES:  Chef Maria Walusis has a fine dining menu that you must try.  Her restaurant is turning heads at 105 S. 2nd Street in Miamisburg.  From crab cakes to creme brulee, this gourmet restaurant even hosts private events.  Also check out the cocktail selections while you are there.

NIDA THAI CUISINE:  Locals say this new Thai spot is beginning to get a cult following.  Located at 853 E. Franklin St in Centerville,  the restaurant hits the basics of Thai cuisine, soups, curry, stir fry, noodle and pad dishes.  We have put this eatery on our hit list of new ones to try, and a Food Adventure is in order.

 

OLIVE MEDITERRANEAN GRILL:  Also known as Falastin Cuisine and Mediterranean Hookah, this family owned restaurant is at 6129 N. Dixie.  Owned by a husband and wife team, they hope to bring fresh tastes of exotic cuisine to the area.  They have some of the best looking Kufta Beef kabobs we have ever seen.  We are looking forward to a Food Adventure visit to this spot, soon!

 

OLLIE’S PLACE: A wonderful beer store, and a restaurant with an unparalleled beer selection.  The restaurant features 60 beers on tap and about 95 bourbons to choose from.  That doesnt even count the extensive bottled beer slelction.  And food, whoa the food is good.  Very unique menu items from bacon tempura asparagus to the cranberry spring rolls.  With a store next door of 1800 beers, where do you think we stocked up our beer supplies on New Years for our parties??  Check this place out on 725 in Centerville, and prepare yourself for brew overload.

PARK CITY CLUB:  Chef Dana Downes of Roost has a great reputation, and big things are expected out of her new restaurant near Fraze Pavillion.  The menu is affordable gourmet cuisine and even features a Sunday brunch.  We will be visiting Dana and her staff soon and cant wait to try some of the creations like the “Carribean Fried Chicken Thighs.”  See you at their 580 Lincoln Park location!

Ollie’s Place burst into 2015 featuring 80 beers on tap and a carryout next door

PERSIS INDIAN GRILL:  This is a chain restaurant with its first Ohio location at 9486 Springboro Pike.  We have not had a chance to try the food yet, but the atmosphere looks very nice.  Their specialty is a “Dum Biryani” style entree with your choice of meat.  It is over rice and sounds like the main spices are lemon and tumeric.  This is a perfect place for a Food Adventure!

 

RAPID FIRED PIZZA: Locally owned concept of a quick “build your own pie” with various ingredients.  Think of it as a “top your own” thin crust which is then cooked by a wood fired oven.  Fresh, quick and delicious are the hallmarks of this parlor.  Based on the crowds, it seems to be a pretty popular new spot.  Signature salads are another popular draw here.

 

SG 75 BISTRO: Formerly “Sooo Good Cafe,” they went for plan “B” this time.  We mean “B” as in Burgers, Bacon, Brews and Bourbon.  That is their menu mantra, which includes some killer signature sandwiches that feature a fried chicken breast or portbella mushroom.  We have heard great things about this place and will report back after an extensive foodie investigation.

SONG’S SUSHI:  A Korean and Japanese restaurant, well known for their sushi.  With one of the more elaborate Korean menus in town, this place will give any foodie a fun chance to explore their tastes.  Lots of good online buzz about this place on Airway Rd.

SPENT GRAIN GRILL: Food at Warped Wing Brewery?? YES !  Andrew Trick from Lucky’s is partnering to bring food made from scratch to thirsty and hungry patrons.  The name spent grain, refers to the leftover malt after the brewing process, and they will be using it to make flour.  The buns, soft pretzels, tortilla, pizza dough and more is made with the in house flour.    But we think there wont be much leftovers here as the menu looks delicious.  We will be having a Food Adventure with the owners soon!

TWIST CUPCAKERY: A Confectioner that opened downtown specializing in cupcakes, wedding and birthday cakes.  Their motto seems to be “baking is our passion.”  By the looks of their prodcuts, they are some talented, passionate baking artists.  We need to try these guys out !  They are located in the heart of downtown at 25 S. St. Clair St.

THE SPICY OLIVE: This amazing shop features dozens of infused flavor olive oils, and balsamic vinegars.  If you like to cook, this place is a dream world, and will make your life so much easier. The fresh oils and flavors will kick anyone’s home meals up a notch.  Out of Cincinnati, this is the 3rd shop opened by owner Melanie Cedargren.

THE SUSHI CLUB: All-you-can-eat sushi? YES!  Made to order? YES!  The first of its kind in the Dayton area, this concept has evolved and now includes all-you-can-eat hibachi, appetizers and even desserts as part of their “endless menu.”  So now you don’t have to be a sushi eater to enjoy the place.  If you love sushi, this is your Disneyland, on Alex Rd in West Carrollton.  If you are a beginner, it is a perfect opportunity to explore, sample and experiment with various options.

WINAN’S CHOCOLATES, CENTERVILLE: A nice coffee and chocolate shop has opened near the corner of Far Hills and Whipp Rd.  It has all of the favorites you have come to love from Winan’s.   Yes, “Wetzels” have finally come to Washington Township.  For some of you it brings your cravings much more closer to home.

WRIGHT WING, KETTERING: This is an expansion of the Fairborn restaurant and is located on Wilmington Pike in the old Buckin Donkey Grille.  This is a manly menu with wings, subs and pizzas.  We hope them continued success in 2016.

ZOUP!:  A soup and salad joint that was part of the big reconstruction on Miamisburg Centerville Rd where Whole Foods was erected.  This chain restaurant features salads, but the main draw is soups.  From Lobster Bisque to Chicken and Dumpling Soup, this pace has the gourmet soups, to comfort soups, to everything in between.  A great place to visit when you are on the go.

WHAT RESTAURANTS THAT CLOSED THEIR DOORS in 2015?

 

ADOBE GILAS:  Mexican party place at the Greene that seemed to have a fiesty, fiesta crowd each day for 8 years.  Rumors swirled as to why it abruptly closed, but nothing was ever confirmed.  The food was ok, it was the drinks that will be missed.

ANTICOLI’S GUILLIANO TAVERN: This Italian eatery never gained the following of the original Anticoli restaurant.  Classic and delicious Italian dishes like lasagna and manicotti were some of our favorites here.  It was sad to see the iconic Dayton family have to close this restaurant.

 

ANTOJITOS CRIOLLOS: Dayton’s Puerto Rican Restaurant on Linden Avenue had promise, but seemed to be open spotty times and never regained itself from various stumbles.  Internet rumors swirled as to why they closed, but no official reason was given.  They had the most incredible fried chicken bites called “Chicharrones de Pollo.”  The owners are also active in the “A World A Fair” Puerto Rican booth, so we hope to see them remain involved.

ASIA HOUSE SUSHI BAR & GRILL:  This Centerville sushi house located in Washing Park Plaza, just off of Lyons Rd., was formerly Ichiban Seafood Buffet.  It closed its doors in 2015, after never quite catching enough clientele.

BELLA VINO:  This wine bar had an incredible selection of vino, but just couldnt build up enough regulars to stay in business.  Known for a nice patio and some recent menu improvements, we were sad to hear of their closing.  They still operate a location in West Chester.

BUCKIN’ DONKEY GRILL: We cried when this place on Wilmington Pike closed.  From the Frosted Flake French Toast to thew Pierogi Burger, to the incredible pies and desserts, this place was special.  Owner Sean still caters and sells pies, and says you never know if you might see the Donkey again at another location.  We hope to see it happen!

 

Goodbye to Puerto Rican restaurant “Anojitos Criollos” & their fried plantains

CORK WINE & DINE: Formerly the Wine Loft, this place was beloved by many for the drink and comfortable ambiance.  Owners out of Columbus closed the shop late this year.

 

CRAZY MANGO BAR & BISTRO: The former owners of Bahn Mai, opened this restaurant at the Greene.  Unfortunately, this beautifully decorated restaurant closed in July 2015.  Who else is gonna miss those long Crab Rangoon Sticks?

 

DENNY’S: Oh how the mighty have fallen.  From the after hour diners leaving the 1470 dance club for some food, this Denny’s was busy late into many nights.  We know it’s a chain, but we loved a grilled cheese and onion rings at 2am.  Denny’s corporate office orchestrated the restaurant closing in December for unspecified reasons.  It is hard to believe that you cant get a Grand Slam Breakfast in Dayton anymore.  Goodbye to an era and an icon.  

 

DOMINIQUE’S BISTRO and BAR: Lack of business forced this upscale restaurant to close in 2015, in Oakwood.  Formerly “C’est Tout,”  the owner had been in business for 12 years.  Lack of business was the reason for the shut down.  It is very sad to see the persons affected, and good things that go away in Dayton.

 

Denny’s – we will miss your pancakes, and late night meals with drag queens

FRIENDLY’S: Oh say it ain’t so !  Not the Reece’s Pieces Sunday, nooo.. Corporate offices called for all 5 Dayton restaurant chains to close.  No more clamboats, no more Fribbles… Doesn’t it just make you want to stand up and scream for ice cream??  We will miss this place.  Goodbye old friend….ly.

 

GRANNY C’S BAKERY: This Huber Heights favorite had to close after more than 5 years in business.  Increased costs forced the owners to close the place.   Known for strawberry donuts, cakes and pumpkin rolls, they also rode the cupcake craze.  We wish the McDaniel family (owners) the best in 2016.

 

HOUSE OF KABAB:  In May 2015, the restaurant closed.  For some reason, the menu did not catch on as much as they hoped after almost 5 years.  Specializing in Persian and Mediterranean dishes, they had some excellent hummus and appetizers.  We will miss this place.

 

NEW YORK PIZZERIA: An immigrant owned pizza place on 5th Street closed its doors this summer.  No reason was given for the closing of the business that had been around about 5 years.

 

OINK-a-DOODLE-MOO: The Kettering location was closed in 2015, yet a couple area spots are still open.  Owners had previously indicated re-opening in another location.  Stay tuned in 2016 for future developments.  Affordable BBQ will always be missed, we hope they re-open soon.

OLIVE, an URBAN DIVE: This closing might have rocked the Dayton area the most in 2015.  A true locally devoted business with a huge following of regulars, Olive was a beloved restaurant.  Located in the old Wympee building.  Owner Kim Collett said she was unable to come up with a rental agreement to stay in business.  She also said she planned to take a break from the restaurant industry and try something new.  We wish her the best of luck.

 

PASHA GRILL II: Opened 2 weeks before it closed.  We hardly knew ya!  The owner realized shortly after opening that he would be unable to run 2 restaurants at once.

 

PATRIOT STEAKHOUSE: A family owned business in Lebanon that went for high quality cuisine at reasonable prices.  For some reason the increase in sales did not meet the needs for the operation to stay in business.  The result was the loss of another good eatery in 2015.

 

PONDEROSA STEAKHOUSE:  For decades this steakhouse chain has had a hold in the Miami Valley.  At one time the CEO lived in the Dayton area.  Not even that could help the steakhouse recover as it fizzled year after year.  We will miss the tin plates, ribeyes and chopped steaks.  We will miss the dinner rolls and fighting for tongs at the crowded salad bar.  So long partner, as you ride off into the sunset.

QUAKER STEAK AND LUBE: Buckets of wings and tons of flavor options was the signature of this chain.  Now, after 13 years, the Atomic Wing Challenge is no more.  Popular with bikers and Wright State Students, the reason given for the close was the selling of real estate where the restaurant was located.  Well, that sucks.. we will miss those tall mugs of beer, and those addictive wings.

 

RINALDO’S BAKERY: The true loss of a legend, this bakery closing will have effects reaching into the Italian festival.    Many may know that a portion of the Italian Fest desserts are made by Rinaldo’s Bakery.  The Stolfo family operated the business for 50 years.  Due to health concerns of the son, the family decided to close their doors.  They simply couldnt handle the workload at their ages.  We will forever miss the Italian Wedding Cakes, half moons, and the adult cakes that would fly out from time to time.

 

Ponderosa – we will miss your 70’s style chopped steaks and 80’s style salad bar

ROUSH’S FAMILY RESTAURANT: A Fairborn staple closed in 2015.  Mike and Joyce Gharst had bought the business fro the Roush family, and were looking to retire.  The business was up for sale for a year with no buyers.  This restaurant was a throwback family restaurant with the 1950s and 60’s style.  Simple, delicious, comfort food.  You could order of the menu or try the “hot buffet.” There really are no more places like this anymore.

 

SAMMY’S EL PUEBLO:  Popular burger and Mexican food spot in Springboro closed to make way for another Doubleday’s Restaurant.  We will miss the chile relleno and the Mafia Burger.

 

SMOKIN ACES BAR & GRILL: Formerly “the Filling Station,” this bar and grill closed in 2015.  We do not know much bout the close, but we hope that someone will fill the vacancy shortly.

 

SPRINGBORO FISH MARKET:  After 8 months, the owners of this seafood store decided to close.  Their specialty was fresh seafood and cited a lack of business as the reason for ceasing operations.

SUMERA: Locally owned idea of sushi mixed with traditonal or non-traditional American items.  They had a delicious menu, but sadly cited weak sales as a reason for the closing.  We loved the staff, menu and mangement.   We were sad to see them go.  The tuna and salmon at this store was amazing as was the Peanut Butter and Jelly sushi roll !

 

ULBRICH’S HOMETOWN BAKERY: Donuts were the specialty of this family owned business.  Although this location closed, there are still locations in Huber Heights and Englewood. Such tasty treats, sad to see them go.

 

UNDERGROUND SPORTS BAR: Troy restaurant owned by the Cheeky Meat Pies establishment, closed its doors in 2015. No reason was given for the sudden close, but we hope the best for the owners in 2016.

ZETLAND STREET:  Their commitment to serve , farm-fresh local foods wasn’t enough to keep this Bellbrook eatery afloat.  Ever wonder if some locations truly are cursed?
