New Year’s Resolutions Alive & Well at Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt

January 9, 2013 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Want to keep your New Year’s resolution’s intact, while satisfying your sweet tooth?  Try visiting the new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt Store located in Town and Country Shopping Center in Kettering.  This nationally franchised company comes to the Dayton area with over 70 different flavors of yogurt and 35 toppings to choose from.  The possibilities of flavor combinations are endless.  Dressed like Olivia Newton John from the “Let’s Get Physical video, The Food Adventure Crew trotted in their 80’s aerobics leggings and grabbed a bite at Orange Leaf after their workout.

The shop is pretty simple, you grab a cup at the self-serve stations and fill it up with one of the flavors offered.  You then may choose from over 35 different toppings.  The final step is to weigh and pay.  The yogurt is sold by the ounce, so you control the price of the item!  The various yogurts run from 20 calories to 47 calories per ounce, depending on flavor.  We tried Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Valencia, Wedding Cake and Banana yogurt, all of which were great.  Orange Leaf  FrozenYogurt is a refreshing treat that will allow you to keep your figure in 2013.  How is that for a guilt free Food Adventure?  We also got a kick out of the inventive little “shovel spoon,” whose ingenuity rivals that of the “spork” from Taco Bell.

The interior decor is sleek, clean and cheery.  It looks like IKEA opened a yogurt store, and we love it.  Also, make sure you register for their rewards card  at OrangeLeafYogurt.com and get a free 8oz cup of yogurt, or as they call it “froyo”.

Orange Leaf is a great place to visit while shopping at Town & Country or after dining at the center’s restaurants Figlio or Buffalo Wild Wings.   Keep your New Year’s resolutions solid and keep your sweet tooth sanity by checking out this new frozen yogurt shop.

The Big Ragu Releases the AMBUCS Chili Cook-off Votes!

November 21, 2012 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Cold beer and hot chili is a recipe for a Food Adventure.   Last Friday night, a large crowd enjoyed all the chili, adult beverages and gambling action they wanted at the 26th Annual AMBUCS Chili Cookoff and Casino night at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.  All the proceeds went to benefit Dayton AMBUCS, a charity service organization that is creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities.  The Big Ragu and the Food Adventures Crew was lucky enough to be asked to be “Special Judge” for the event.   We had a blast, hung out with Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzel, and ate some terrific chili.

First off, we tried each and every chili offered.  We loved the traditional chili from Flannigans, Atrium Grille, Buckin Donkey Grille, Miami Valley Golf Club, Jimmie’s Ladder 11, Elsa’s and Slyder’s.  Our taste buds enjoyed unique meat twists on chili from Smokin BBQ, Vinny’s Bar & Grill, Christopher’s, and Longhorn Steakhouse .  Things heated up with the spicy chili from Scratch Catering and Harrigans Tavern.  Unique tasting chili from The Tropics and Cafe Mexico were nice surprises, too.   There were even great entries from individual cooks like “Deer Slayer” and “Chef Daddy’s Firehouse Chili!”

We loved and finished them all, from white bean chili, to every piece of venison, and every jalapeno.  But, we had to pick our favorites, and here were our choices:

Food Adventure’s Top 3:
1) Deer Slayer
2) Jimmie’s Ladder 11
3) Smokin’ BBQ

After trying all of the chili we ate some hot dogs then tried our luck at Bingo, Blackjack and Dice games.  Most importantly, we donated to a great organization, AMBUCS.  It was great to see local people helping a charity that reaches out to all sorts of people with physical disabilities.  We were honored to be a part of this special event and this was a Food Adventure that will always remain close to our heart.  See you next year !

If you were not there, but want to help out a great cause, visit ambucs.com, and see how you can get involved.

Matera Caffe: One of a Kind Restaurant in Franklin

November 15, 2012 By Dayton937 1 Comment

There is nothing else like Matera Caffe in the Dayton area, and not only because they use two “F’s” in Caffe.  Why is Matera so special?  Because they mill their own flour and wheat on site. Yes, you read that correctly.  It doesn’t get fresher than this, and we have the flour marks on our clothes to prove it!  But that is only one of the great qualities of this eatery.

The owners of Matera Cafe have developed a place that is perfect example of why we do Food Adventures.  Inspired by a missionary trip to Honduras, Mary & Larry Rowland decided to open up a coffee house which would later turn into a full blown restaurant.  Close to their missionary work, they named the restaurant after the city of Matera, Italy where the movie “Passion of the Christ” was filmed.  The result is a well groomed restaurant that is as immaculate on the inside as it is outside.  It looks like the “after” pictures from the Kitchen Nightmares TV show.  There is even an outdoor dining area under the overhang.

As we entered Matera, a wonderful baked cinnamon smell greeted our noses, as well as the warmth a wood fired oven.  The chilly day made this a wonderful, inviting atmosphere.   Friendly servers explained the menu and the daily specials.  We were already drooling.

You already know they mill their own flour and wheat to make pizza dough, breads and waffles.  Well, they also make their own salad dressings and pancake syrup.   We tried the homemade waffle and syrup together, and it was great.  The Liege style Belgian Waffles are served with seasonal fruit and whipped cream.  A very unique, fresh tasting waffle was unlike any we have ever eaten.

Our Food Adventure to Matera Caffe would not be complete unless we tried one of the pizzas cooked in the wood fired oven.  We tried the Margherita Pizza, which is topped with roma tomatoes, romano cheese, fresh basil, mozzarella & olive oil.  The pizza was cooked perfectly, and the dough was so fresh that it had an incredible softness to it.  We were blown away.

Another item we loved was the Americano Sandwich.  It starts with their freshly baked ciabatta bread made from scratch.  The sandwich ingredients include fire roasted chicken, roasted roma tomatoes and arugula spinach.   The sandwich was also topped with an incredible pesto sauce that is homemade from herbs grown on site.   We are still raving about the Americano sandwich as one of our all time favorites.

Our Food Adventure ended in a tour of the milling operation.  We were very impressed at the hard work and passion that goes into making this menu.  Matera is one of a kind, so look for this little known spot to catch even more buzz in the coming months.

Dayton foodies should definitely check out Matera Caffe.  The staff and owners go out of their way to accommodate patrons.  They even offered us some wood fire roasted veggies as an alternative to Saratoga potato chips as a side.  Something not to miss, is the full Honduran coffee menu and various teas to compliment any meal.  The prices are affordable and the portions are nicely sized.  We devoured so much food that The Big Ragu actually had a rare “to go container!”  There is much more to come from Matera, as the owners plan to expand the dining area outside and have just recently secured a liquor license.  So take a drive down State Route 73 towards Franklin and experience the delicious cuisine like we did.  It is definitely a homemade experience from start to finish.

Giovanni’s: The Fairborn Legend

October 18, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

With Halloween approaching, many people are stopping at the costume shops in Fairborn.  But The Big Ragu suggests you make another stop, Giovanni’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant.  Located at 215 W. Main Street, this place has been a Fairborn icon for decades.   Since 1953, this local favorite has been serving up pizzas and pasta dishes that will make your mouth water.  Originally owned by Giovanni DiPasquale, the restaurant was purchased by Tony Spaziani in 1994.  Soon after the menu and dining rooms were expanded and they even started a full in-house bakery.  This bakery allows for fresh bread, pasta and dough to be made on premises.  It also allows for homemade desserts that are nothing short of amazing.  Many things at Giovanni’s are made from scratch, the way they ought to be, to guarantee fresh tasting food.

The restaurant is always bustling and the servers are friendly and caring.  In fact, our waiter was the pastry chef, who waits tables on Sunday to stay in tune with customer feedback while making some extra dough .. pun intended.

During our Food Adventures, we have tried the sandwiches and the pastas.   We especially liked the Chicken Parmesan and the Gnocchi.   You can really tell the sandwich bread and pasta is made on site, the taste is amazing and homemade.  The same can be said about their homemade cheesecakes, cannoli, and tiramisu, all produced at the in-house bakery.

However, all the locals know that the main attraction at Giovanni’s is their pizza.  A semi-thin crust pizza with a unique tasting sauce makes each pie simply scrumptious.  The fresh, delicious toppings offered are plentiful on each pizza.  They even have anchovies for the true Italian style Food Adventurer in you.  Of course, all the dough for the pizzas are made on site, which is noticed on each bite into the crunchy crust.  The prices are reasonable and the product is good.  They even offer 7 inch personal pizzas with up to 3 toppings for less than 6 bucks during lunch time.

The food speaks for itself so check out the photos and click on them to get a larger, tastier view.  Visit this mom and pop restaurant in Fairborn, and find out for yourself what the legend is all about.

Food Adventures Gets Even Cheesier with Murray’s Cheeses

October 3, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Murray’s: Quality Cheeses

When we say the Muensters, we don’t mean a TV show.  We mean aged mold, or as you know it  .. cheese.

Gouda, Mozzarella, and Brie are just some of the dozens of varieties of Murray’s Cheeses available at your local Dayton Kroger stores.   The Big Ragu and Crew were lucky enough to be invited by local Cheese Master, Logan Class, to sample some of their premium cheeses.  How cool is that to be hanging out with a cheese master?   We Daytonians do not know how lucky we are to have Murray’s Cheese Shops, allowing for quality and hard to find cheeses at our fingertips!

Brie and Fig Spread Counter Samples at Murray’s

Murray’s Cheeses is a New York based company and has been making and distributing cheese since 1940.   There are 15 Dayton area Kroger’s that feature Murray’s.   What makes Murray’s Cheeses so special?  The answer is the products used in their cheeses.  For example their mozzarella is made with the same milk used in Ben and Jerry’s Vermont Ice Cream, so we are talking premium tasting milk.  They also carry cheeses from France, Italy, Ireland, England and more.

Cheese Master Logan explained to us that there is something for everyone at his store.   There is a $5 and under selection and cheeses that range from $5.99 to $30 a pound.   Other goodies are McClures Pickles, Bucheron 34 fig Spread, Merlot Salami and Olive Oils.   There is even a connecting buffet display of  peppers, olives, and more.  Food Adventures has previously enjoyed Murray’s favorites such as Jarlsberg Cheese, Javarti cheese with Caraway seeds, and Tabouli with Cilantro.  The Big Ragu had to be pulled away from the free cheese on the various counters so the cheese tasting could begin.

Your Food Adventurers were here to sample these unique and unforgettable Murray’s Cheeses as presented by Cheese Master:

1) Cremont – This was a soft, creamy Vermont cheese made from goats and cows milk.  It was simply divine and dreamy.

2) Cabot Clothbound Cheddar – Made in Vermont.  The wheels of this cheese are covered with cheesecloth and lard then aged for 10 months.  Almost like Big Ragu with a wet blanket.  This cheese is one of the tastier cheeses made with Pasteurized milk, as opposed to most high end cheeses which are made from raw milk.

3) Pleasant Ridge Reserve – A mountain style cheese similar to Gruyere.  This is a raw milk cheese and sells at 30 bucks a pound.   We found this cheese to be rich with flavor.  So flavorful that this cheese won the American Cheese Society and World’s Best Cheese Awards.

4) SarVecchio Parmesan:  Looked like your typical Parmesan cheese, but had an incredible fruity flavor to it.  Definitely an amazing tasting cheese that you won’t soon forget.

Rogue River Blue: One of the Most Complex Cheeses You Will Find

5) Rogue River Blue: Made in Oregon, this cheese won the 2006 award for best cow’s milk cheese.  It is the 1st ever raw milk cheese to be exported to Europe.  That’s right, it is so good, even Europeans want it!  The cheese is made through an incredible process, including scrubbing the outside of the cheese wheel with brine for a meaty flavor.  The cheese is then wrapped in Syrah Grape Leaves that have been soaked in a Pear Brandy. After wrapping, this cheese is aged for a year.  The product is perfection and the best bleu cheese we have ever tasted.  With preparation like this, we could understand the $30/pound price tag.

Hey Food Adventure Fans, here are some quick cheese facts:

— All cheese is made with milk, salt and rennet.

— Cheeses that are aged more than a year are typically the stronger tasting cheeses.

— Softer cheeses have a shorter the shelf life than harder cheeses

Who thought we could get any cheesier?  Well The Food Adventures Crew did, and you can too.  Visit your Cheese Master at your local Kroger grocery and look for the Murray’s Cheese Shop !

Lots to See at Blind Bob’s

September 20, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Italian Burger

Tucked into the Oregon District is a pub with personality called Blind Bob’s.  Cheap drink specials and a unique spin on food has locals becoming loyal regulars.  The Big Ragu first heard of Blind Bob’s through word of mouth, all of which was good.   We were lucky to visit the eatery for a DaytonMostMetro.com Happy Hour event in late summer.   On our next Food Adventure to Blind Bob’s, we ate dinner with Heater from the Dayton Dragon’s.  You never know who or what you are going to see at Blind Bob’s.

You want unique?  How about a cream of pickle soup that is one of their most popular items?  It is sweet, creamy and will leave you wanting more.  Also addicting is the Hummus and Pita Chips appetizer.  You can’t go wrong with homemade pita chips and creamy hummus.

Pickle Soup – This is a must eat !

Blind Bob’s burgers are top notch, with specialty choices like the Italian Burger which is a  half-pound patty, stuffed with provolone, basil, and green peppers. It is then topped with marinara and caramelized onions.  Is your mouth watering yet?  The burger was juicy and the toppings were amazing.  Another specialty sandwich we would highly recommend is the Crabby Patty which includes a handmade crabcake on a bun.  It is topped with sauteed onions, peppers, and provolone cheese, smothered in herbed aioli.  It will have your taste buds rocking and rolling.

Other great menu items worth a try are the Ultimate Falafel Wrap and the Grilled Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich.  Actually, they call the choices “sammiches” on the menu.  You know it tastes good with a name like sammich.  We were pleasantly surprised and “blindsided” by the superb menu that quenched our Food Adventure appetite.

Just a buck on Monday nights – Mickey’s 16oz

Drink specials?.. Yeah they have those.  Everyday prices are $2 Miller High Life and $1.50 Pabst Blue Ribbon beers.  On Monday’s the Mickey’s 16 ounce cans are only a buck!  Happy Hour at Blind Bob’s means $2.50 well drinks and 75 cents off all bourbon.  They have an eclectic selection of a few drafts, one of which Big Ragu loved called Leinenkugel’s  Lemon Berry Shandy.  It was refreshing and fruity, so The Big Ragu checked his man card at the door and ordered another.  We also enjoyed a bottle of “Hop Baron.”

But there is more to see at Blind Bob’s.  Their website calendar is packed with trivia nights, karaoke, open mic nights and live bands.   The historic building lends itself to the charismatic appeal of this locally owned eatery.   Blind Bob’s is definitely a great place to grab dinner and an adult beverage.  With a fun atmosphere inside and the Oregon District right outside, this place is a blast.  So, next time you are wanting something different for a bite and a drink, ask yourself: “What about Bob’s?”

Have you been to Blind Bob’s?  Please comment below and tell us what you thought of this Dayton pub.

Food Adventures: Making History at Culp’s Cafe

March 22, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Culp’s Amazing Pot Roast

One of Dayton’s best kept secrets is Culp’s Cafe located at the Carillon Historical Park.  The original Culp’s Cafe was started in the kitchen of Charlotte Gilbert Culp who sold breads and baked good out of her West Third Street home.  When downtown Dayton boomed in the 1940’s, The Culps opened a cafe by the Arcade building serving homemade food to about 5,000 customers per day.  During the 1960’s, people began moving to the suburbs forcing the Culp’s to sell their beloved cafe due to declining sales.  Culp’s Cafe is alive again thanks in part to Carillon Park and Chef Jose Calzada who puts his modern touches on nostalgic home cooking.  If you are looking for good, homemade food set in a beautiful atmosphere, then Culp’s Cafe is the place to be.

Culp’s Cafe celebrated St. Patrick’s day offering a menu consisting of traditional Irish favorites.  As soon as we heard about this, we knew we had to attend as guest of Chef Jose and the Dayton Historical Society.  The menu included a three-course lunch for $11.75.  The entrees were Irish classics: Fish and Chips, Sheperd’s Pie, and Corned Beef with Cabbage.  The desserts were just as festive including such tasty treats as Irish Cream Chocolate Mousse Cake, Chocolate Guiness Goodness, and a White and Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding with Irish Cream Sauce.

Corned Beef with Cabbage

Our appetizers were brought to the table by a server decked out in a traditional 1940’s waitress uniform.  (Imagine a gray version of the uniform worn by Flo at Mel’s Diner.)  This really brings a nostalgic vibe to Culp’s Cafe!  We were served a simple, refreshing salad and a cup of hearty potato soup.  The soup was the tasty kind your mom used to make, but Chef Jose throws in a little bacon and cheese for added flavor.  We loved our appetizers and waited eagerly for our entrees to arrive!

Our friendly server, Carol, brought out our Fish and Chips and Corned Beef with Cabbage.  The Big Ragu is the known as the “King of Fried Foods” and naturally ordered the Fish and Chips served with a side of house-made Cole Slaw made with pineapple and poppy seeds.  We ordered the Corned Beef with Cabbage.  The dish consisted of three large pieces of Corned Beef that resembled the tongue of Kiss’ Gene Simmons.  (If you don’t understand that reference, we suggest that you Google ‘Gene Simmons Tongue.’)  The cabbage was tender and the Corned Beef was flavorful.  The Big Ragu even took a bite of the Corned Beef — an amazing feat if you’re familiar with the issues Ragu has with certain meat textures.  Too bad we didn’t photograph this part of our dinner…the facial expression was classic.  The Corned Beef with Cabbage was also served with boiled red potatoes leaving little room for dessert!

The Chicken Basil Sandwich is Mouthwatering

As we were waiting for our desserts, we thought we would entertain our fellow diners with our interpretation of “River Dancing”.  Fortunately, we left our tights and curly-haired wigs at home.  As the desserts arrived, our eyes got about as big as our bellies!  The Big Ragu ordered the Irish Cream Mousse Cake — a nice, light way to end the meal.  We ordered the Bread Pudding which we quickly devoured.  The Big Ragu makes pretty good bread puddings, but Culp’s Bread Pudding puts ours to shame.  Chef Jose took it to a whole new level by adding Dark and White Chocolate!  After all of this food, we were feeling “extra heavy”.  We feared the only way we could leave the cafe would be for someone to kindly roll us out to our car!

Incredible Bread Pudding

The Irish Feast was amazing and we appreciate Chef Jose and Elise Hafenbrack from Dayton Historical Society for inviting us to be a part of this great event.  Culp’s Cafe is open seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  Some of the other dishes we highly recommend are the Reuben, Grilled Basil Chicken Sandwich, Original Culp’s Cake, and that amazing Pot Roast.  Culp’s Cafe takes you back to the long lost era of good, homemade comfort food set in one of the most scenic dining rooms in Dayton.  We encourage you to visit Carillon Historical Park and take pride in Dayton History and enjoy a great meal at Culp’s Cafe.

Food Adventures Get Lucky at Dunaway’s Beef and Ale

March 8, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Summer Shandy and a Brooklyn Lager

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, Dunaway’s Beef and Ale in Troy, Ohio is gearing up for their annual event.   With huge crowds and outdoor tents, Dunaway’s  hosts one of the biggest St. Patty’s Day parties in the Dayton area.   Big Ragu and the Food Adventures Crew visited the pub recently and was impressed with the menu and drink offerings.  Since 1991 owners Brenda and Sandy have offered good food and spirits to the Troy faithful.   Known for their roast beef, the friendly staff is always eager to share the daily specials and 11 draft beer choices.  Dunaway’s is a mom and pop place.  It is in an old house facing main street, and is big on personality.

We were seated at our table and promptly ordered a couple of pints.  The Big Ragu grabbed a Brooklyn Lager, which is brewed in Utica, NY, then we went for a Wisconsin favorite, Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy.   We decided to order some cheese and crackers to match our beers.   We grabbed a jalapeno stuffed hot pretzel, because pretzels go well with beer.. right??

Our favorite appetizer of the day was the peel and eat shrimp.  The shrimp were like our own personal pot of leprechaun gold at the end of the rainbow.  Served cold and with Cajun spice on the shells, they were downright addicting and to die for.  The fresh shrimp sparked our taste buds, and paved the way to try some more specialties.

Dunaway’s Pastrami Sandwich

Dunaway’s menu is heavy on sandwiches and pizza.  We ordered an incredible looking pastrami sandwich which was enormous!  This huge, flavorful sandwich was pure heaven.  The Big Ragu ordered a burger with everything on it.  Plenty of toppings adorned the perfectly cooked hamburger, which was more than a handful.

Your Food Adventurers sampled other items like fish, and the very tasty pizza.  The pizza sauce has just the right amount of kick and will satisfy your cravings for a decent pie.  One special item offered on the menu is the “Garbage Truck Pizza.”  This pizza is loaded with toppings including fresh mushrooms, garlic, onions, tomatoes, sausage, pepperoni, ham, meatballs, black olives, green olives, ricotta cheese, banana peppers, and you can request jalapenos!  How is that for a deluxe pizza?

Another menu item worth mentioning is their “6-Pound Sandy-wich.”   They tout this challenge as “1 person, 45 minutes to eat it and it is free.”  This mountain of a sandwich is filled with beef, ham, turkey, corned beef, pastrami, cole slaw, American cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, horseradish and fries.  It is probably easier to find a 4 leaf clover than beat this monster.

The Hamburger at Dunaways

Dunaway’s  also offers soups, salads and has a full catering service for your next party.  They pride themselves on using local meat markets and vegetable farms including Caven’s Meats, Bowman Landis, Fulton Farms, and Troy Meat Shop.

This place has everything you need for a fun, casual dining spot.  Locally owned, with good food, good drink in a unique atmosphere, it is everything we look for in a Food Adventure.  Just a couple of minutes off of Interstate 75 in Troy, put this place on your radar for good eats.  Don’t forget to grab a pint and toast to St Patty’s day, no matter what day it is!

If you could use a little California sunshine in the midst of this cold Ohio winter, consider heading to Centerville ’s West Coast inspired FLAVORS EATERY.   Rich and Elaine LoRusso’s little eatery whose slogan is “LIVE, LOVE, LIFE,” has been a favorite dining spot in Centerville for several years.   Rich and Elaine had a successful string of restaurants in California , but decided to move back to Ohio to be closer to family.  Once they returned, they decided to open FLAVORS EATERY – a restaurant concept which provides diners with healthy menu alternatives in a fast-food-dominated world.  The concept worked and the restaurant has developed quite a following since its inception.

The Incredible House Garlic Sauce

The menu is dynamic and unique like the personalities of the charismatic owners.  The couple know their customers well and have developed many friendships with their returning clientele.  Once inside the restaurant, you are promptly greeted by the highly energetic Elaine LoRusso.

The atmosphere is casual and eclectic with music playing overhead and walls adorned with pictures of the owners with many legendary musicians.  The place has an artsy and relaxed West Coast vibe.

The food is totally unique and bursting with flavor. The menu consists of California-style wraps, homemade soups, subs, salads, smoothies, and burritos.  They even have ice cream and low-fat yogurt.  It is very easy to eat at FLAVORS EATERY if you are watching your weight!  Since both of us could be described as “husky”, this is one of our favorite dining spots.

Monterey Grilled Chicken

We have become addicted to the Weight Watcher friendly Monterey Grilled Chicken –a flatbread loaded with organic chicken and topped with fresh grilled veggies.  If you want a different flavor to your food, they will gladly accommodate your request.  If you love Thai food, ask Rich prepares his Chicken Monterey Grille with a little Thai sauce… delish!

The Big Ragu loves fish and always goes for the heaping Salmon Wrap.  They start off with a Honey Whole Grain Wrap and stuff it with salmon, black beans, organic brown rice, lettuce, and cheese.  The wraps also come with a side of tortilla chips that are topped with the House Garlic Sauce.  If you haven’t tried the House Garlic Sauce, then you are missing out!  We highly suggest you pick up a bottle to take home!  The house-made salsa is also very refreshing and unique as they change the vegetables with each batch!

If the large portions don’t quite fill you up, you can always try one of their many desserts. They offer espresso drinks, smoothies, baked goods, ice cream, and frozen yogurts. One of our favorite desserts is the large chocolate chip cookie warmed and topped with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.  Nothing beats a fresh, warm cookie!

Peanut Butter Cup Shake – click to enlarge

The Big Ragu goes the frozen route and orders up a milkshake.  His favorite is the Peanut Butter Cup Shake that is packed with huge chunks of peanut butter cups.  If you decide to try these desserts, you might want to spend a few extra hours in the gym to burn off the calories! Believe us, every drop of sweat will be worth it!

Flavors is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and closed on Sundays.  A popular lunch spot, you might have to wait a little longer during the lunch rush, but the food is that good.  One taste of their unique food and you will be addicted too.  It’s easy to understand the loyal following FLAVORS EATERY has acquired. Check them out at www.flavorseatery.com or even better yet….stop in this restaurant and give them a try.  They are located at 865 East Franklin Street by Centerville High School in the Centerville East Plaza shopping center.

Food Adventures SMALL BITES for 1/6/2012

January 6, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Every couple of weeks, your humble FOOD ADVENTURERS will give you “SMALL BITES,”   a quick feature of some restaurant items that we love.

SMALL BITES – 1/6/2012 includes these favorite cravings in the Dayton Area:

Click Here to Enlarge the Perfect French Fries

THE FRESH CUT FRIES at PENN STATION EAST COAST SUBS:

Freshly cut, and just out of the fryer, there is something about these “skin-on” french fried potatoes.  Maybe it is because the potatoes are fried in cholesterol-free peanut oil.  Whether you dip them in ketchup, splash some vinegar on them, or eat them plain, these tasty treats always hit the spot!  There is one problem, they always give you that small white  holder of ketchup, and you have to fill up like 4 of them.  Want to learn a “fat kid trick?”  Use a beverage lid and turn it upside down and squirt the ketchup on that.  Problem solved, Big Ragu style..

THE POT STICKERS at CHINA COTTAGE:

Pan Fried Potstickers from China Cottage

Huge on taste and huge on size, you have to try the pot sticker appetizers at China Cottage.  They are the best anywhere in the Big Ragu’s opinion.  Want an appetizer that will awaken your tastebuds and satisy that pre-dinner hunger?  Trust us on this one, you cant go wrong.  These dumplings are filled with pork and garlic spices.   The magnificent creation is then pan seared and brought to your table.  It is served with a soy based sauce and scallions.  Definitely the most memorable appetizer we have had at a Chinese restaurant in a while.

THE CHICKEN WINGS at ELSA’s:

The Big Ragu’s Favorite Place for Wings in Dayton is.. Elsa’s !

Wings at Elsa’s?  HECK YES !  In a place known for their Bad Juan margaritas and their Mexican food like the Super Mini burrito, you would not think to try the wings on their menu.  But let the Big Ragu tell you, they are his favorite wings in the Dayton area.  Another trick is heading out to eat these wings while watching your favorite NFL game and you will not have to fight the typical Sunday sports bar crowd.  The order will definitely fill up the biggest appetites with 10 nice sized wings.  Your humble Food Adventurers suggest the following sauces: either Jamaican Jerk, or Regular BBQ.  You cannot go wrong with these wings in such an unlikely place.   Order them with the sauce on them, or order the wings plain with the sauce on the side for dipping.  you choose, but please save a couple of wings for us !

THE BRANDON BURGER at ARCHER’s TAVERN:

The Brandon Burger comes with Bacon, and Fried or Scrambled Eggs

Our Food Adventures crew enjoy a good burger now and then.  One of his favorites is the Brandon Burger found at Archer’s Tavern in Centerville.  This big burger starts with fresh meat from local Zink’s Meat Market and is loaded with toppings, including bacon and a fried egg.  At a price of $8.64 for the platter, we think it is a pretty good deal.  We also like the taste, which is a juicy, explosion of flavors and defintely worth a try.  With a parking lot full of customers at Archer’s everyday, they must be doing something right!
