Housemade Introduces Peachy Sriracha!

October 27, 2015 By Lee Anne House

12140652_480175028829474_1199866927304909117_nDayton finally has more sriracha! What a long wait it has been. Due to a problem sourcing peppers the original sauce has been off the shelves most of the summer. But now HouseMade Sriracha is back up and running with their newest flavor, Peachy Sriracha. Super ripe peaches combined with Cincinnati grown habaneros makes for a fun sweet and spicy sauce. This is a small batch made at the end of the peach season. When it’s gone it’s gone till next year. Get it while you can!

Owner Lee Anne House  tells us to watch out for a green sriracha to come up next. This is made with a blend of serrano peppers, tomatillos and pineapple juice. Like the Peachy, it made its debut on the Bad Dog Nice Taco cart this summer. It was so well received it’s now on their Kaboom tacos and in the pimento macaroni salad, both of which are on the delivery service available Monday-Friday.12112389_1916222168602094_5300581263957082737_n

You can find Peachy Sriracha at these locations so far:
Arrow Wine- both locations
Belmont Party Supply
Dots Market
Eclectic Essentials
Foremost
Ollies Placey
Olympia Health Food Store
Spice Paradise
The Spice Rack

Chinese & Japanese Restaurant’s Moraine Location Now Under Construction

October 26, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

430641_351657294877594_1503002330_nCJ Chan’s second location is now finally under construction.  The new location was announced back in April, when they signed a lease for the 1,800 square foot location at 2747 W. Alex Bell Road, in the same strip center as the original Chappy’s Tap House.

The original CJ Chan opened up at 536 Wilmington Ave in the fall of 2010 and has earned a steady following of fans serving up a “distinctive menu featuring more than 80 sensational dishes ranging from traditional Chinese favorites and innovative specialties to classic Thai foods from across Asia, using only the freshest, most natural ingredients,” according to their website.  The restaurant has earned positive review for “huge portions, delicious food,  prices that are low and service that is fast,” if you peruse the online sites.

Construction photo’s placed on their website today confirm that  progress is finally under way.  A call to the restaurant said they hope to be open by the end of November.  cjchanmoraine

Pay the Price For Buying Booze With Credit.

October 22, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

LiquorStoreIt may be time to stock up your liquor cabinet for the holidays now.  Starting November 1st Arrow Wines & Spirits will join with the majority of local liquor stores and add a surcharge to liquor purchased with a credit or debit card.  Mif Frank explains,  We’re one of the last stores to pass on the cost of the credit cards to the consumer.  We didn’t want to do it but with the rising cost of health care and  other operational costs, the 5% commission we make on bottles less the 2-3% credit card charges leaves us only 2% profit and we just can’t run our business on that.  That charge will only be on hard liquor, not beer, wine or low proof bottles.”

In checking with other stores in the area, Miami Valley Wine & Liquor charges 50 cents per bottle, Belmont Party Supply charges 3%, Liquor & Wine Warhouse charges 3% and Air City says it’s 50 cents per order.   So start carrying cash or get used to paying a higher price for your booze.

It’s the Great Pumpkin…Spice!

October 20, 2015 By Dayton937

No doubt one of the most popular flavors that takes this season by storm is that of Pumpkin Spice. Most people either love it or hate it.  We here on the Food Adventures Crew vote that we LOVE it and our Gem City gives us plenty of options to indulge! So grab your hoodies, yoga pants and Uggs as we indulge in the areas best seasonal coffees and treats!

Starbucks, the founder of the "PSL", serves up a great latte hot or iced!

Starbucks, the founder of the “PSL”, serves up a great latte hot or iced!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The Pumpkin Spice Latte (aka “PSL”) craze started back in 2003 when Starbucks first launched their newest flavor. Up until that time, their recipe remained unchanged.   The result was Starbucks most successful seasonal item.. EVER.  This year they launched their all natural flavorings for their PSL and this method proves to be superior.

— Many chains, including Saxbys, and local coffee spots  have also created their own versions embracing the higher quality of all natural flavorings.

— Apple and Sriracha are the #2 and #3 most popular fall coffee flavors, respectively.

Hungry Jax, The Big Ragu and Chef House took on the challenge to test out some of areas beloved javas.  So if we seem a little hyper,  you’ll know why!

MUST DRINKS!:

— STARBUCKS: Known as the creator of this seasonal phenomenon, we felt that starting off with them would be most fitting. Starbucks continues to serve up a quality latte proving that their changes to all natural ingredients was a good move! Hot or iced you’ll get your daily caffeine kick with a delightful seasonal twist!

— DOROTHY LANE MARKET: Hands down this latte blew us away as one of the best ones in the area! DLM also prides themselves on an all natural version. Made with real pumpkin and spices this is the quintessential version of “Autumn in a Cup”! In addition, we need to give a shout out to another hit seasonal drink of theirs, the DLM Maple Apple Cider made with their own DLM 100% maple syrup! As always, DLM never disappoints!

DLM's all natural flavorings make us like this drink a latte!

DLM’s all natural flavorings make us like this drink a latte!

— WINAN’S CHOCOLATES and COFFEES: This local chain has a Fall drink menu that will make you salivate! Their Pumpkin Pie Latte is more subtle in flavors but leaves your feeling warm and toasty. Other seasonal drinks that they offer are an Ultimate Apple Cider, Stuffed Chai Latte, Hot Buttered Toffee Latte, the Autumn Twilight, and a S’mores Latte! Add any of their amazing chocolates and you’ll be experiencing ultimate indulgence!

— GHOSTLIGHT COFFEE: Located in Historic South Park at 1202 Wayne Ave in Dayton, Ghostlight Coffee maybe not be a chain, but this java stop would no doubt hold it’s own in a coffee throw down! Their seasonal creation is a Pumpkin Coconut Latte made with their own syrup! And Food Adventures got the latest scoop that Ghostlight is currently creating a Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Latte that will kick off soon!  While you’re there, grab a jar of Hawthorne Homestead’s “Lumberjack Pumpkin Butter”!

— THE BOSTON STOKER: One of our most coveted local coffee roasters takes a different spin on fall flavors! While Boston Stoker does not offer a pumpkin spice latte, this season they will whip you up an Orange Honey Latte or Cold Brew Horchata! One of our favorite things to do at Boston Stoker is to ask the barista’s what their favorite drink creation is.  Hungry Jax got to experience a talented barista’s secret iced tea that tasted JUST like an apple pie! So don’t hesitate to go off the menu and trust the creative minds behind that coffee bar!

— SAXBYS: Yes yes, it’s another chain. But it’s important to honor the places that are taking pride in delivering a quality product. And Saxbys is doing just that. They too have jumped on the natural flavorings chain and their Pumpkin Spice Latte packs on the seasonal flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg!

We would be remiss if we didn’t highlight at least some of the seasonal pumpkin treats that are being served up in the area! So after you’ve grabbed your cup of joe, hit up these places to further your pumpkin spice addiction!   So here are a few of our patented MUST EATS for a pumpkin spiced Food Adventure…

Pumpkin Cookie with Caramel Icing is one of the many seasonal treats at DLM!

Pumpkin Cookie with Caramel Icing is one of the many seasonal treats at DLM!

MUST EATS:

— DOROTHY LANE MARKET: No one should be surprised that this local powerhouse also dominates in their bakery department.  To compliment your latte, you can choose to indulge in their caramel frosted pumpkin cookie, pumpkin roll or even a pumpkin cupcake! And let’s not forget “Aunt Dorothy’s Pumpkin Pie” all made from scratch and in house!

— ASHLEY’S PASTRY SHOP: We’re frequent flyers at Ashley’s! And their seasonal treats just keep calling to us! Located at 21 Park Ave in Oakwood, this bakery has something for everyone! Their seasonal delights include pumpkin iced cookies, muffins, cakes, pies, rolls and even pumpkin cheesecake!

— BILL’S DONUTS: This well known Centerville donut shop has also embraced the pumpkin craze! You can choose form a cinnamon sugar pumpkin donut or a glazed pumpkin donut! Or do what we did and don’t choose at all and eat both…

Dunkin' Donut's Pumpkin Muffin is a seasonal favorite!

Dunkin’ Donut’s Pumpkin Muffin is a seasonal favorite!

— DUNKIN’ DONUTS: While Dunkin’ does offer a pumpkin spice latte, we actually are even bigger fans of their pumpkin muffins! This moist muffin is topped with a cinnamon crumb topping and a drizzle of frosting. With some new locations in the area, we want to give a shout out to the longer established Dunkin’ Donuts location on Rt 741 buy the Dayton Mall! Their service is always top notch!

So there you have it fellow pumpkin spice lovers! So many options of seasonal drinks and treats in our area! Be sure to check these out and let us know what others you have grown to love!  Lots of these flavors will go into the fall and some beyond Thanksgiving.

October 14, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

“Buckets and Trucks” every Thursday in October

Each Thursday, for the rest of October, The Dogs Breath Tavern in Kettering will be featuring an event called “Buckets & Trucks.”   On these nights, a couple of featured food trucks will invade the parking lot on 1912 E. Whipp Rd., and the bar will host domestic buckets of beer for 11 bucks.

October 15th, the featured Food Trucks will be Hunger Paynes and Dayton Urban BBQ.  It promises to be a good night for a Food Adventure.  Trucks will be ready to serve by 5pm and will be there until about 9pm.

Hunger Paynes is known for their “croquette” style menu and the BBQ from Dayton Urban is terrific, especially the pulled pork sandwich.

Here are our TOP 5 MUST EATS for the night:

— PULLED PORK SANDWICH from DAYTON URBAN BBQ:
Good, and a little sloppy when that cole slaw is added.  You won’t care, it is worth every bite.

— SALMON CROQUETTES from HUNGER PAYNES:
Crunchy on the outside, soft and tasty on the inside.  A Food Adventure favorite.

Dayton Urban BBQ Food Truck will be at Dog’s Breath on Thursday 5pm

A Mountainous burger, slapped with cheese in between.  A Big burger that will fill you up, and make you smile.

— MAC n CHEESE CROQUETTES from HUNGER PAYNES:
Gooey, and hot.  Love it served on a handful of homemade Saratoga chips.

Flavors from Philly cheesesteak, to pulled pork and ham n cheese, these hand rolled egg rolls are stuffed with various favorite fillings on site.

Top 5 Must Eats at this Weekend’s Sauerkraut Festival

October 9, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Get the German Sundae and it supports the American Legion Hall

More than seven tons of  sauerkraut is expected to be served at this weekend’s Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville.  But, this isn’t some locally named gig.  They call it the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival, so listen up from Cleveland to Chillicothe and from Pisgah to Perrysburg.  These hungry people are coming to celebrate the German food and heritage, and of course, the almighty Sauerkraut.  That’s right, they are all on a Food Adventure.  Who knows better about food than Hungry Jax, The Big Ragu and Chef House?

Let’s get down to it and discover what all the fuss is about the Sauerkraut Festival.  Let’s head on down, close to where State Route 48 meets State Route 42.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— More than 350,000 people are expected to attend with over 400 vendors of all sorts from more than 30 states.

WHEN: Always the 2nd weekend in October, this year’s dates are:
— Saturday, October 10th 9:00am – 8:00pm
— Sunday, October 11th 9:00am – 6:00pm

#1 Must Eat – Sauerkraut Donuts

WHERE:  Downtown Waynesville, North Main Street area.  LOTS of WALKING as the festival stretches the entire length of Downtown

What the heck is Sauerkraut?  Answer : Fermented cabbage.  Some complain about the smell or the taste.  But we cut right through the whiners and found the best eats… even the crankiest festival goer will enjoy these top 5 mouthwatering suggestions…

Drum roll please, strike up the Oompa band as Food Adventures delivers our patented Top 5 MUST EATS for The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival.

MUST EATS:

— SAUERKRAUT DONUTS:  #1 by a landslide… not even close.  Warm, soft, sugary and sweet.  They are amazing and we aren’t sure where the sauerkraut is, but the donuts are tremendous.   Get these damn donuts if you do nothing else all day.  But we warn you, get there early as the line get long.  Kids love them, and adults love them more…

— PUMPKIN FUDGE:  Find the fudge trolley.  Run, don’t walk.  They have various fudges, but here is the unique opportunity to get some pumpkin fudge.  When else in a Food Adventure do you get that chance?  Very rich and delicious, the fudge will have you craving something to drink, but you wont be sure what you want to drink.

Pumpkin Fudge – oh yeah, take some home too

— GERMAN SUNDAE: This is a bowl of chopped Potatoes, Sauerkraut, Cheddar Cheese, Sour Cream, Bacon Bits and an olive.  It looks like a sundae, but the bowl is a hearty, savory and salty favorite.  Can’t lose with this winner.  Great for sharing on the go.. a walking treat.

— HAWG DAWG:  A Giant hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard.  One of the biggest dogs we have even seen and stop with the jokes.  Take a bite outta this wienee and support Waynesville Athletic Charities.

— PULLED PORK  & KRAUT POTATO SKINS:  The dark horse out of nowhere, is the potato skins.  They have some pulled pork and sauerkraut on them, and the result is a tasty twist on your typical potato skins.  Worth a try, they are one-of-a-kind.

There are so many more food choices, but these are our TOP 5 MUST EATS for the fest.   Please note, some area spots like Stone House Tavern may have a limited or adjusted menu during the festival.  Our advice… GET THERE EARLY.. you won’t beat the crowd, but the crowd will be slightly less.

Where are the Outdoor Refreshment Areas?

October 8, 2015 By Ohio Beer Counsel

On April 30, 2015, Gov. John Kasich approved a new law which permits municipalities and townships with a population greater than 35,000 to create outdoor refreshment areas (“ORA”). Much press surrounded this new law as it was introduced in the Ohio House and signed into law less than three months later, an incredibly fast moving bill. Representatives from the Cincinnati area were pushing for the new law so an ORA could be established in time for the All Star Game on July 14, 2015. Many were intrigued about the possibility of “Bourbon Street” like atmospheres around the State as open container laws are relaxed within an ORA and passengers on a commercial quadricycle can drink (if certain standards are met). What’s not to love about this new law!?

ORA_KCC

Well, five months have passed since creation of the new law and we are not aware of any ORA established in Ohio (not even Cincinnati). Like any law, especially those involving alcohol, the devil is in the details. For starters, an application for an ORA must include the following:

  • A map/survey of the proposed ORA in sufficient detail to identify the boundaries, which shall not exceed 320 contiguous acres or one-half mile;

  • A general statement of the nature and types of establishments located within the ORA;

  • A statement that the proposed ORA will encompass no less than 4 “qualified permit holders” (think breweries, wineries, restaurants and/or night clubs);

  • Evidence that uses of land within the ORA are permitted by master zoning plan/map of municipality or township; and

  • Proposed requirements for the purpose of ensuring public health and safety within the ORA.

After public notice of the application and perhaps a public hearing, the municipality or township determines whether to approve the application. If approved, notice must be given to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control and the Ohio Department of Public Safety of the approval and description of the area provided in the application.

The Division of Liquor Control is then required to issue an ORA designation to each qualified permit holder located within the ORA at no cost. However, issuance of an ORA designation is not the end of the process as a municipality or township is also required to adopt an ordinance or resolution which establishes requirements “necessary to ensure public health and safety” within the ORA. Requirements necessary to ensure public health and safety must include all of the following:

  1. The specific boundaries of the area, including street addresses;

  1. The number, spacing, and type of signage designating the area;

  1. The hours of operation for the area;

  1. The number of personnel needed to ensure public safety in the area;

  1. A sanitation plan that will help maintain the appearance and public health of the area;

  1. The number of personnel needed to execute the sanitation plan; and

  1. Beer and liquor may only be served in plastic bottles or other plastic containers in the area.

The responsibility to comply with public health and safety requirements falls on each qualified permit holder within the ORA. Many of these requirements will result in additional cost and expense to permit holders, municipalities and townships. These additional “burdens” may cause many to question the benefit of an ORA and may be a major roadblock in the creation of any ORA.

Municipalities and townships are free to create more requirements than above to ensure public health and safety within the ORA. In fact, the City of Dayton passed a resolution on July 29, 2015 establishing the procedure for the designation of an ORA. While the entire resolution can be found here the City of Dayton’s procedure requires more than above.

For instance, petitions for an ORA are submitted to the Department of Planning and Community Development and require petitioners, among other things, to consult with police, fire, public works, neighborhood groups and the Downtown Dayton Partnership before submitting the petition. The ORA Petition Review Committee then makes a recommendation to the City Manager who then determines whether to submit an application to the City Commission for consideration.

BeerCounselThe question remains – will any Ohio city or township approve an ORA in the near future? It will require much planning, cooperation and patience. However, the City of Dayton has taken a proactive first-step for the establishment of an ORA. Hopefully it won’t be long before we’re all riding quadricycles!

Happy Hour Sliders at Jay’s Seafood A Hit!

October 6, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

jaysslidersOne of Dayton’s best deals is also one of its best kept secrets: happy hour at Jay’s Seafood on Sixth Street in the Oregon District. Introduced over the summer to entice more early evening guests, happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 5 – 6:30pm  and features $4 domestic craft beers, $3 domestics, $4 house wines, $4 well drinks, $6 martinis, and 25% off all appetizers.
But the real gems of this new program are the sliders, small burger sandwiches served two at a time. “Small” is relative, though — together, any two of the sliders equal to more than a normal-sized burger. I went in on an empty stomach and couldn’t finish the second slider on my plate. There are three kinds: kobe beef with white cheddar is the most popular, and tuna and salmon are available as well. An order of sliders is just $5, or for $8 you can get a sampler plate with one of all three varieties.

“There’s been a really good response to the new sliders,” owner Amy Haverstick said of the tuna and salmon, which were added last month alongside the popular beef offering. “One of our chefs has been with us for 34 years, and another has been here for 31. We sat down together and they came up with the happy hour menu items. We’ve gotten great compliments on them all.”

Jay’s also offers a monthly 3 course meal deal  and here’s what’s on the menu for October for $27:

First Course
Beef Barley Soup -or- Herbed Ghost Pepper Créme dressing on grilled Romaine with roasted beets and walnuts

Second Course
Pumpkin Seed-Crusted Salmon with a spicy pumpkin curry sauce served with roasted redskin potatoes or vegetable du jour  -or-    Pan Seared New York Strip steak with au gratin potatoes and herb butter

Third Course
Almond Pear Tar  -or-  Peanut Butter Pie with Chocolate Ganache

Jay’s is also know for their quarterly wine luncheons, and there’s one coming up this Saturday:
