Our cocktail history is a long and rich one. Starting with the Pilgrims stopping at Plymouth Rock because they were out of beer, up to the current rise of the craft cocktails, we have seen a little bit of everything. One of the longest runs in our cocktail history is one that for the most part has been forgotten, other than remnants of them in some of the cocktails we enjoy today. It was present up right to the end of the 19th century, encouraging people to gather around and spend a few hours with each other, ladling out glasses of potent liquid to cool off in the hot summer months, and to warm up in the cold winter months. The punch was a staple of the growing United States, being present at every bar and gathering in the country, and for some very good reasons.

Punches originated in India, where the British were stationed with little access to the good alcohols they enjoyed at home. And the British sailors did not like to be separated from their ration of one gallon of beer a day. Or a half pint of rum, whichever they preferred. One of the origin stories for why they called it “punch” was a slant on the Indian word panch (five), the number of ingredients the punch was supposed to have. The drink was created with alcohol, lemon, sugar, water, and tea or other native spices. The alcohol became whatever was handy at the time. It began with wine, but rum, brandy, and whiskey punches were also popular in the various areas of the British Empire. It was so popular that a special bowl was even created for it, called a Monteith Bowl. It had a scalloped edge, which eventually became removable, where a ladle could be kept or the stems of wine glasses could be held.

It spread with the empire. Rum houses sprang up all over the United States and Caribbean islands. The earliest recorded punch in the New World is the Bajan (Barbadian) Rum Punch. It was so popular it even had its own rhyme for a recipe: One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak. One part lime juice, two parts sweetener (usually sugar), three parts rum, and four parts water. Local spices were also added to the mix, recreating the five part panch.  As the drink spread through the country, regional variances changed the flavors, and in some case the potency, of the tipple. The Schyulkill Fishing Company created the most famous variation, known as the Fish House Punch. Possibly for the gentlemen there to enjoy, possibly something lighter for the ladies to enjoy at a Christmas Party in 1848. Punches of all varieties became a staple of dinners, of meetings, of daily life in the young country. At one dinner in 1785, the host reported that sixty-eight people went through forty-four bowls of punch, as well as eighteen bottles of wine and a large quantity of other rums and brandy. Rum was the staple liquor in the colonies, and in many punches, since it was readily available and cheap. The cheapness of the rum was another reason punches were so popular; in the 18th century, rum was still in its infancy. It was awful. The additional flavors and water added to the punch helped to hide the awfulness of the cheap and nearly raw spirit.

Punches started to fall out of favor just before the Civil War. Punches were something to be consumed by a group of people over several hours, and we were starting to roll out across the country. Railroads were being built, gold was being discovered, and acres of land were out there for the taking. This was a growing country, and this was no time to sit and drink. There were more options for drinks as well, and people were looking for something more individualized. They did not want to all have to drink the same thing. They lasted until the beginning of the 20th century as a curiosity, something of a cocktail throwback. They were pushed to the back of recipe books in favor of collins, cobblers, and sours, many of which owe their existence to the recipe of punch. Some of the first tiki style drinks from the 1950’s were also based off of punch recipes. Since then, punch’s non-alcoholic form (which was always around, just not as popular) became a staple at kids’ parties for the same reason it was a staple at dinners; it brings people together around a communal place to drink something refreshing in a social setting.

Punches are still a great way to present something to your guests at a party so they can serve themselves. They can be prepared in advance, and you can make them to taste, taking into consideration the time of year you are serving them. Right now, a nice apple cider punch or something with fall spices like cinnamon and nutmeg would be delightful. September 20th is National Punch and Rum Punch Day. Gather some friends together, stir together one part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong and four parts weak, add a few spices to taste, and enjoy an evening around a fire. Cheers!

Barbadian Punch

1 cup lime juice
2 cups simple syrup (Heat one cup of water, then add a cup of sugar. Mix until dissolved, allow to cool)
3 cups of rum
4 cups of water
A few dashes of Angostura bitters
Nutmeg to taste

Stir all of the ingredients into a pitcher or bowl. Ladle into individual cups over ice, add nutmeg to taste.

Philadelphia Fish House Punch

1 cup sugar
3 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice
1 (750-ml) bottle Jamaican amber rum
12 oz Cognac (1 1/2 cups)
2 oz peach brandy (1/4 cup)

In a large bowl, stir the sugar into the water until the sugar is dissolved. Then mix in the lemon juice, rum, cognac, and brandy. Put the mixture into the refrigerator for three to four hours until chilled. Serve over a large block of ice for the sake of tradition, or in cups with ice in them. Garnish with wheels of lemon. If you deem this as too strong when tasting it, add more water or black tea.

Lots to See at Blind Bob’s

The Italian Burger

Tucked into the Oregon District is a pub with personality called Blind Bob’s.  Cheap drink specials and a unique spin on food has locals becoming loyal regulars.  The Big Ragu first heard of Blind Bob’s through word of mouth, all of which was good.   We were lucky to visit the eatery for a DaytonMostMetro.com Happy Hour event in late summer.   On our next Food Adventure to Blind Bob’s, we ate dinner with Heater from the Dayton Dragon’s.  You never know who or what you are going to see at Blind Bob’s.

You want unique?  How about a cream of pickle soup that is one of their most popular items?  It is sweet, creamy and will leave you wanting more.  Also addicting is the Hummus and Pita Chips appetizer.  You can’t go wrong with homemade pita chips and creamy hummus.

Blind Bob’s burgers are top notch, with specialty choices like the Italian Burger which is a  half-pound patty, stuffed with provolone, basil, and green peppers. It is then topped with marinara and caramelized onions.  Is your mouth watering yet?  The burger was juicy and the toppings were amazing.  Another specialty sandwich we would highly recommend is the Crabby Patty which includes a handmade crabcake on a bun.  It is topped with sauteed onions, peppers, and provolone cheese, smothered in herbed aioli.  It will have your taste buds rocking and rolling.

Other great menu items worth a try are the Ultimate Falafel Wrap and the Grilled Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich.  Actually, they call the choices “sammiches” on the menu.  You know it tastes good with a name like sammich.  We were pleasantly surprised and “blindsided” by the superb menu that quenched our Food Adventure appetite.

Just a buck on Monday nights – Mickey’s 16oz

Drink specials?.. Yeah they have those.  Everyday prices are $2 Miller High Life and $1.50 Pabst Blue Ribbon beers.  On Monday’s the Mickey’s 16 ounce cans are only a buck!  Happy Hour at Blind Bob’s means $2.50 well drinks and 75 cents off all bourbon.  They have an eclectic selection of a few drafts, one of which Big Ragu loved called Leinenkugel’s  Lemon Berry Shandy.  It was refreshing and fruity, so The Big Ragu checked his man card at the door and ordered another.  We also enjoyed a bottle of “Hop Baron.”

But there is more to see at Blind Bob’s.  Their website calendar is packed with trivia nights, karaoke, open mic nights and live bands.   The historic building lends itself to the charismatic appeal of this locally owned eatery.   Blind Bob’s is definitely a great place to grab dinner and an adult beverage.  With a fun atmosphere inside and the Oregon District right outside, this place is a blast.  So, next time you are wanting something different for a bite and a drink, ask yourself: “What about Bob’s?”

Urban Nights, Downtown’s Biggest Street Party, Returns This Friday

Musicians perform on stage in the Wright-Dunbar Business Village. The area will have different performers on several stages from 5 to 10 p.m.

Fall Urban Nights will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 14, in downtown Dayton, the Oregon Arts District and Wright-Dunbar Business Village. An estimated 30,000 people attend Urban Nights, which is held in downtown Dayton, the Oregon Arts District and Wright-Dunbar Business Village, and there are more than 100 activities planned during the event — including live music on outdoor stages, art exhibit openings, tours of downtown housing, discounts at restaurants and retail shops, and much more. A full list of events is available online. Highlights include:

• Dancing in the Street: First Street will be closed between Ludlow and Main streets to make way for performances by DCDC, the South Dayton Dance Theater, Funk Lab, SMAG Dance Collective, ZumbAtomic and the McGovern Ceili Dancers.

• I Am City Folk: Cityfolk will launch this year-long project that is part of its Culture Builds Community initiative. It will feature mosaics, compiled by local photographer Andy Snow using photos of Daytonians taken by Nicole Christian, on display throughout downtown. Contact Jean Howat Berry, Cityfolk’s education and outreach/Culture Builds Community coordinator, at 937-223-3655, ext. 3008.

Customers eat at the Oregon Express during Urban Nights in May. Many downtown eateries will offer specials and discounts the evening of Urban Nights.

• Dayton, Ohio! You Are Here! This large-scale performance piece will transform the Old Courthouse on Third and Main streets into a work of art through video projection and architectural lighting on the building’s exterior, as well as visual art and performances of dance, music and spoken word inside the historical building. • Over the Edge: Returning to the fall Urban Nights will be this challenge that combines fundraising with adventure. Participants who raise at least $1,000 will rappel over the side of the 27-story KeyBank Tower, which visitors can watch from Courthouse Square. All proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley. For more information, contact Matt McDowell at 937-220-6855.

•Taste of the Miami Valley: This weekend-long event will kick off during Urban Nights at RiverScape MetroPark. Guests can sample food from more than 30 area restaurants. Admission is free, and most tastes are $3 each.

• Downtown in Focus: Winning entries from this annual amateur and professional photography contest will be on display in the PNC Center lobby.

• Business grand openings: Three new downtown businesses will host grand openings during Urban Nights: OinkADoodleMoo in the lobby of the KeyBank Tower, 10 W. Second St.; Brim, a new hat shop at 464 E. Fifth St.; LIVV Interior Designs, a home and office interior design firm at 520 E. Third St. in the Cannery; and Sew Dayton, featuring fabric and patterns, at 16 Brown St.

• Urban Bikes @ Urban Nights: Cyclists will gather at 5:15 p.m. at Don Crawford Plaza in front of Fifth Third Field for, a community ride through the Urban Nights action hosted by Bike Miami Valley and ending at Courthouse Square. While the ride will be in parade fashion with a police escort, it is not appropriate for small children on their own bikes.

A family participates in Urban Bikes @ Urban Nights, a biking group that will ride through the city, meeting at 5:15 p.m. near Fifth Third Field.

This is just a small sampling of the many activities that will be part of the Sept. 14 Urban Nights. The event also includes live music on five outdoor stages, art exhibit openings at galleries and other creative spaces, discounts and specials at downtown restaurants and retail shops, a chalk walk, roaming entertainers, and more. In addition, Greater Dayton RTA will provide free event buses to help visitors get around; bus routes are included in the event map.

Festival Recap: Food Survivial at Dayton Revival

Did you get a chance to sample some of the “street eats” at The Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival?   The Big Ragu did !  In between our favorite musical acts, he experienced a truly unique Downtown Food Adventure.

It is so great not to have to deal with anyone in weird festival mode anymore, or a “sudden health kick for a night.”  You know the ones, who then they eat biscuits and gravy the next day after hiking in Kentucky.  Just eat the festival food and quit trying to impress your girlfriend.

The bash was hosted around 3 separate concert stages with indie bands, Ohio bands and some national feature acts.  Were you  listening to John Legend and enjoying legendary sandwiches? How about listening to Train while eating plantain?  Whatever the case, good food was available throughout the event in a 3 block area.  Some vendors were local, others were in from as far away as Miami, Florida.  The two day festival gave Daytonians plenty of time to sample vendor food in iconic places such as Cooper Park and in front of Memorial Hall.

There were food trucks, grill setups and deep fryers a plenty! The aroma of freshly prepared specialties filled the air at the Dayton Revival.  Food vendors included local favorites like  Bessie’s Noodles, The Dublin Pub, Ritter’s Frozen Custard,  and Smokin’ Bar-B-Que.  Other Dayton based vendors we love included Red Wagon Cafe, Brock Masterson’s Catering and Frickers.

The Big Ragu also sampled food from places we were not so familiar with such as Caribbacanas, The Burrito Bus, D-Fish D-Chicken, Bourbon Street Grill and Cafe, Los Tucanes, Ma & Pa’s Kettle Corn, G’s Barbeque and Enrique’s Place Latin Grill.

Take some time to browse through the incredible photos in the album below to get a taste of what was available for consumption.  From Gyros to fried fish, from beers to jerk chicken wings, we tried almost all of the offerings.  We covered the eats from fried pickles to kettle corn.  On this Food Adventure we learned this: nothing is better than good music, good food, with good friends in a great hometown.  What more could you ask for?

New Dinamita Doritos: Where are they in Dayton?

New Dinamita Rolled Chile Limon Doritos -HOT and ADDICTING!

Attention junk food junkies: there is a new Dorito in town, but it is like finding a needle in a haystack.  Why?  Because they are so popular that they sell out within a few days.   They are called Dinamitas, a rolled Dorito snack, and the Chile Limon flavor is so hot and addicting that they are flying off shelves.  The Big Ragu has actually only seen these briefly at Wal-Mart stores , but a couple of days later, they are sold out.  Frito Lay’s website supposedly has a search tool HERE where you can see where they are sold, but the two Speedway gas stations listed in Franklin and Springboro, Ohio did not have them.

But what is this addicting snack?  Frito Lay has teamed up with Mexican snack company Sabritas, to present these little taquito shaped munchies in limited release.  The goal was to capture the essence of Hispanic style snacks in a rolled Dorito.  Mission accomplished.  The product, Chile Limon Dinamitas is one of the best snacks we have eaten.   Be warned, you will get hooked on these.  You will have red fingertips and a burning mouth in no time, but you just won’t be able to stop eating them.  The worst part is you cannot get another fix, because they are so hard to find!

They are simply HOT and ADDICTING .. just like The Big Ragu.  Trust us, Chile Limon Dinamitas are a Food Adventure in a bag !

The Big Ragu gets Endless Tail at Red Lobster

Shrimp, that delicate food that can be served so many ways as Bubba told us in the movie “Forrest Gump.”

One of the best ways Food Adventures like it served, is endless.  Fortunately, Red Lobsters in the Dayton area are running the “Endless Shrimp” special right now.   For just $14.99 you can gorge yourself on 5 types of shrimp: Teriyaki Shrimp, Parmesan Shrimp, Garlic Shrimp Scampi, Shrimp Linguini Alfredo and Hand Breaded Shrimp.  Try as much as you like, any way you like it!  The dinner special also comes with salad and the addicting Cheddar Bay Biscuits!

The Big Ragu is happy that the special is supposed to run through November 11th.  Sure, we normally feature Food Adventures about mom and pop places, but sometimes a chain restaurant does something that is worth a mention.   Be warned, if you visit Red Lobster over the next 2 months, you just may see our waitress running for refills!

Beer, Food & Fun at the GermanFest Picnic!

Weinerschnitzel Sandwich -Incredible !

The Dayton Liederkranz know how to throw a party.   This year’s GermanFest Picnic, held  August 10th -12th was no exception.  The festival was hosted by the German Club, to promote and preserve German culture and traditions in the Miami Valley, and it was a playground for your favorite Dayton foodies, the Food Adventure Crew.   The 29th annual event included food, drink, kids areas,  and a 5k event.  Having German roots in both of our Food Adventure families, we appreciated the genealogy assistance area for help with your family tree

We strolled the grounds looking for craft beers and food booths.  We enjoyed tasting various German treats, after all it is our heritage.  Our favorite snack of the day was the Weinerschnitzel Sandwich, which is pretty much a fried pork cutlet.  The tasty treat was topped with onions, sauerkraut, mustard and more.  Some of our favorite beers offered included Paulaner, Widmer Brothers HefeWeizen, and Hofbrau Dunkel.

Food vendors also served authentic root beer, and local restaurant Smokin BBQ was in attendance.  Culp’s Cafe had a presence at the festival serving sweet potato fries and various burger options.  Ullery’s Ice Cream was making handmade ice cream on site.  There were numerous other food vendors and we took our time to explore each one.  Near some of the no-food vendor tents we even met the owner of  Miss Riley’s Cookies.  Her almond flavored, highly decorated cookies hit the spot!

Another attraction of this festival was the recognition of German influence on Dayton history.  Inside the Museum lobby, their were displays of Beer history around the Miami Valley as well as local author Curt Dalton who was displaying his historical novels about the Dayton area.

What is a German Fest without Pretzels ?

At each corner of Carillon Park we tried German Beers and a German Potato Sundae.  The cinnamon almond roasted nuts were fantastic, and the aroma from thje grilled Bavarian Pork Chops filled the entire festival.  From pretzels to dried sausages that tasted like beef jerky, the German Fest Picnic is a Food Adventure for the whole family.   The Big Ragu even received a massage at a vendor booth.  An Italian getting a massage from a Thai woman at a German festival.. only in Dayton.  Make sure you visit this annual event, just follow the lederhosen.

Thyme for a Food Adventure

The Cheesesteak at Steak Thyme

Have you tried Steak Thyme on Wilmington Pike in Kettering?  If not, you are missing out on a sub shop and so much more.  As you may know, The Food Adventure Crew are not food critics, we are just people who love to eat, and we found a gem of a place.  This family owned restaurant has been cranking out good food for the past 8 years.  Steak Thyme’s menu features various Philly cheesesteak style sandwiches.  These sandwiches start with 100 percent pure angus beef and are cooked with a special thyme seasoning from which the eatery gets its name.  The tasty subs are then topped with fresh toppings depending on what was ordered.  Not a steak lover?   Steak Thyme offers ham, chicken, or turkey as your meat substitute instead of angus.  Types of subs range from the Greek Chicken Philly, topped with feta and olives, to the BBQ Cheddar Steak.  Fresh cut fries or onion rings add the perfect side to these comfort food specialties.Thyme Seasoning on the Angus Burgers

Steak Thyme is a little known secret, but regulars realize it is a great place to get a quick, delicious meal.  They even have a convenient drive thru. The Big Ragu is a big fan of Steak Thyme.  It is a great place for certified Food Adventure!  If you have not tried this casual dining spot, it’s thyme you went there!

Chipotle vs. Qdoba: Who’d You Rather ?

In the world of Food Adventures, we rarely hit the chains.  But once in a while, we give our spin on some familiar favorites.  How about some feedback from the thousands of Dayton Foodies out there?  That’s right, The Big Ragu and the Crew want to know what DaytonMostMetro fans think.  What do you like better, Chipotle or Qdoba and why?

Jax’s take: For me it is Qdoba for the simple fact that there are more choices.  More options mean a better variety in my effort to be more health conscious.  The tastes are similar but there are more soups, quesadillas, etc. at Qdoba.  This discussion makes me miss the Baja Fresh restaurant !

The Big Ragu’s take:  I would rather go to Qdoba for two reasons.  First, Qdoba offers a ground beef meat option, while Chipotle does not.  Also the chicken at Qdoba is white meat, while the chicken at Chipotle is a white/dark mix.  Since I am “weird” when it comes to meat, the decision is a no brainer for me.

Nick’s Restaurant in Xenia, a Must Eat !

One of our goals is to inform Dayton Foodies about fantastic dining spots that they may not be aware of.  One of the best examples of a Mom and Pop place that is off the beaten path, featuring incredible menu items, is Nick’s Restaurant.  Located  in Xenia, it is a place with a style all it’s own.  Style is one thing, but Nick’s also has irresistible, addicting food throughout the menu.  The restaurant was started in the 1940’s by the late owner Nick Malavazos and was formerly called “Say How Do.”  Since Nick’s passing, the local ownership has changed the restaurant name, but kept the tradition alive with great eats and friendly service.

How good is their food?  At the recent Kickin’ Chicken Wing Festival at Fraze, Nick’s won 5 out of the 6 awards, including Best Side, People’s Choice Award, Best Wing, Best Sauce, and Best Booth.   The Big Ragu loved their wings and would recommend their “Secret Sweet Hot Damn Sauce.”  Wings are only a small portion of their offerings, and this was just the start of our menu exploration. Nicks has a full bar and has that type of watering hole atmosphere that spills into the dining area.  The drink offerings are vast, but we were here for food.

We tried some unique appetizers including fried smelts.  For those who do not know, smelts are small fish about the size of sardines that are fried whole, but headless.  They are usually served with tartar sauce.  The Big Ragu loves smelts our guests took a bite of the little fish and liked them so much that we had the waitress sit down and try them as well.  Food Adventure accomplished!  Nick’s Restaurant has another spectacular appetizer, the hand breaded deep fried mushrooms.  Light and crispy, our mushrooms were cooked perfectly.  The waitress then  brought out one of the best french onion soups we have ever eaten.  We also enjoyed some freshly cut potato chips.  There are a ton of good appetizers to choose from! Your Food Adventurers were already very impressed, and we had not yet tasted an entree.

The staff then brought out our dinners which were piping hot.  The Big Ragu ordered Pan Fried Walleye.  The piece of fish was huge and overlapped the plate like Ragu’s belly on his belt.  The walleye was superb and served with freshly hand breaded onion rings.  This dinner will satisfy big appetites and we loved every bite.  We tried an entree of Filet-Mignon.  The large steak was grilled to perfection and wrapped with bacon.   Ragu smiled after trying a bite of the steak and devouring a plate of smelts.  Obviously the kitchen knows what they are doing, and it shows in each and every entree.  We upped the ante by trying a unique side of purple pickled eggs and beets.  It was pretty tasty!

What’s a Food Adventure Without Purple Pickled Eggs?

Our meals, menu sampling and Food Adventure was a complete success.  We love this place!  The staff and owners of the restaurant could not have been more attentive.  Good restaurant service is an art, and you will find assertive waitresses and waiters here.  Nick’s has a reputation for great food, and we discovered why they have such a loyal following.  When  you go Nick’s, it is obvious they take pride in what they bring to diner’s tables.  The variety is there, and the taste is there.  Can you think of another restaurant that has purple pickled eggs, beets AND smelts on their menu?  It is truly a unique eatery! Nick’s is another perfect example of why Food Adventures exists, and we are happy to shed light on this unbeaten stairway to taste heaven.   We were very impressed and now we understand why Nick’s website is gotonicks.com.  It is because you HAVE to go there !  It is American style pub food with a gourmet twist.  Trust us on this one, a jaunt down North Detroit Street is your ticket to a meal that will fill you up and have you raving.

Columbian Comfort Food at 2nd Street Market

Arepas & Co has opened its doors at the PNC Second Street Market in downtown Dayton to introduce members of the surrounding communities to a new, flavorful food concept known as Colombian comfort food. Our menu features informal, popular dishes such as arepas (white corn patties), Colombian platter (home-cooked style meal), empanadas (yellow corn turnovers), and patacones (fried green plantains) that cater to patrons looking for something new, tasty and affordable. Arepas & Co also offers Calentado (Colombian-style breakfast) on Saturdays, Tres Leches (three milk) cupcake for dessert, and fruit-flavored colas. Our dishes are vegetarian and vegan friendly as well as gluten free.

Arepas & Co will be celebrating its official grand opening July 19th, 20th, and 21st which coincides with the celebration of Colombia’s Independence Day on July 20th.

Whats up? Doc’s Place in Lebanon

Just south of Dayton, in the town of Lebanon, is a place where pub meets grub.  Doc’s Place isn’t your usual watering hole.  For example, they have a chef, Carlos Silveti who has culinary experience in Spain and Italy.  The result is a fresh menu in a historic building.  Doc’s place is located among the shops of  Downtown Lebanon.  The menu ranges from wings, salads and soup to steak and fish entrees.  Truly a treat, and truly a spot where foodies feel welcome.

Our Food Adventure ran the gauntlet of much of the menu, as  The Big Ragu tried fillet mignon, crab cakes, and fried green beans.   All of the menu items were spot on, even pub favorites such as wings and fried calamari.  The restaurant has personality, located in a building that was erected in 1896.

Half of Doc’s Place is a bar, and the other half is a dining room.  The popular place is not very large, so you can expect a small wait at peak times.  We suggest you get there early, bring a group of friends, and share the tastes of this family owned eatery.  Whether you try a hand cut steak, or some specialty items made from scratch, Doc’s Place is another Lebanon treasure.  Stop in and get a prescription for your appetite, because the food here is just what the Doctor ordered.

Food Adventure to Benjamin’s the Burger Master

The namesake of Benjamin’s the Burger Master

Who is the master of making burgers and other things in Dayton?  The answer is Benjamin’s the Burger Master on North Main Street in Dayton.  This unique restaurant is in old building that used to be a “Red Barn” in the 1970’s.  The menu not only has burgers, but they have some Southern, soul food offerings.  The Big Ragu loves to stop in for lunch and it is worth fighting the busy crowd for a taste of some good home cooking.

The burgers are nice and juicy and never frozen.  They are hand pressed, made to order, and the meat melts in your mouth.  However, many people are finding out that Benjamin’s the Burger Master offers incredible southern cooking that is just as good, if not better than their burgers!   Want authentic  soul food?  They have perfectly cooked Southern fried chicken and skillet cornbread.  Other sides like fried okra, white beans and collared greens put the exclamation point on a great lunch or dinner.

The homemade menu does not stop there.  Benjamin’s the Burger Master offers a Fried Fish Platter every Friday.   They also sell BBQ Beef Ribs everyday by the rack or by the bone, in either sweet, spicy, or smoky sauce.  How is that for Southern cooking?  The meals are very reasonably priced, which keeps us coming back for more.

Benjamin’s the Burger Master is another Dayton Food Adventure opportunity, that cannot be missed.  Eateries like this is why our blog exists.  We love informing foodies about locally owned places, that they may not know about.   Get to Benjamin’s the Burger Master for some good grub on North Main Street.  Now you know, they have mastered more than the burger!

Third Shift Beer Now Available in the Dayton Area

Third Shift Lager available on Draft in Dayton

A new draft beer has come to town and is available at local Dayton eateries.  The beer, called THIRD SHIFT, and is an amber lager that is 5.3 percent alcohol by volume.  Third Shift is the first beer released on a large scale in series of gold medal award winning beers brewed by ” Band of Brewers.”

Why the name Third Shift?  Because the brewers’ love of beer, and passion for brewing doesn’t stop when the day shift is over.  Third Shift describes their beer as  “an amber lager that is complex, yet well-balanced with a sweet maltiness that dominates slightly over a clean, hop bitterness.”  Sounds good, right?

The Rig Ragu loves the term foodie and craft beer. He has a passion for tasty brews that spills past our normal work shifts, so we had to try this lager.  We first tasted Third Shift on tap at Brixx Ice Company in Dayton, and we loved it. Third Shift, noticed our mention of their beer in the Brixx story and kindly sent us some bottles of the product.

Hungry Jax’s Take on Third Shift : It definitely has a bold taste and I am a fan of amber lagers.  It will be interesting to see if this beer makes a mark in the “craft beer” industry.

The Big Ragu’s Take on Third Shift :  It is a light, refreshing, smooth and easy drinking lager that packs some flavor.  I prefer lighter beers, and this beer is a perfect start to a Food Adventure meal during these summer months.  It also has a beautiful color.

Food Adventure fans can now find a limited-release introduction of this well balanced lager at local bars, pubs and restaurants.   We think you will like it’s toasted character with subtle hops taste.  According to their website, Third Shift has been also been introduced on draft in limited quantities in other cities such as  San Francisco, Reno, Sacramento, San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas.

Make sure you try this tasty new draft offering at your local restaurant or watering hole.  It gives new meaning to the phrase “workin the third shift.”

Coopers’s Deli: The Big Apple Comes to Dayton

Want to have a taste of the NYC in the DYT?  We know a Food Adventure spot that lights up our appetites like a sign on Broadway.   Cooper’s Deli recently opened in the Shoppes of Oakwood and is creating quite the buzz.  The restaurant specializes in New York Style deli sandwiches as well as  homemade soups, salads, a kids menu, and desserts.  In addition to top notch food, the restaurant offers delivery within a two mile radius, an incredible rooftop patio, beer, wine selections, wheelchair accessibility, and two levels of indoor seating.

The Big Ragu spoke with, co-Owner Dan Apolito who traveled to New York City on a “Deli” tour in 2011, tasting various meats and securing the best for Cooper’s Deli.  New Yorkers take pride in their deli’s and Apolito is bringing that mindset to Dayton.  Cooper’s Deli uses the same corned beef and pastrami that is used in the world famous Stage Deli in New York City.  The meats are shipped directly to Dayton from New York City.  The Corned Beef and Pastrami served here are not your typical run of the mill deli meats.  The proof is in the taste.

The Cooper’s Salad is loaded with everything under the sun, pulling no punches.

The pastrami melts in your mouth…you won’t get that at your local $5 sub shop.  Other sandwiches that we tried included: The Reuben which is quite possibly the best reuben that Dayton has to offer.  The Corned Beef is flavorful, plentiful and further proof of the quality of food that Cooper’s Deli is serving.  The Turkey sandwich is basically a mound of turkey breast stuffed between a layer of herbed goat cheese and cranberry-orange chutney on Challah bread.   Vegetarians may enjoy the Garden Grilled Cheese, which consists of four cheeses, artichoke, tomato, and spinach.  We would highly recommend all four sandwiches.

Every menu has a monster dish and Cooper’s is the “New Yorker Sandwich.”  This big sandwich sells for $15.50 and is large enough for two people, like most of their sandwiches.  The “New Yorker” consists of 12 ounces of pastrami and corned beef, sharp cheddar cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing, all on fresh marble rye bread.  For deli connoisseurs, this is the promise land.  How lucky we are to have the taste of Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx shipped fresh to Dayton via Cooper’s Deli.   These sandwiches are not only fresh, they are piled high and thick.  Be careful not to unhinge your jaw biting into one of these marvelous deli features.  Click here to view their entire menu.
