The Top 16 Spicy Foods of Dayton

November 14, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Big Ragu is sweating again, find out why below…

Dayton’s vibrant food scene is not short on heat.  If you are looking for HOT, you can find it in the Miami Valley.  “Burn Baby Burn” like a Disco Inferno you will, you just have to know where to look.

Did you know Hot Food boosts your metabolism?  It also clears you sinuses, helps ulcers and can lower bad cholesterol.

“See people rocking — Hear people chanting — Feeling hot hot hot” –Buster Poindexter

Chef House (Dayton’s Original Sriracha Mama), Hungry Jax (Utica Grind Red Pepper and Cayenne Guru) and the The Big Ragu (a wing connoisseur) are Dayton’s Food Adventure Crew and have compiled their list of the spiciest dishes in Dayton.

These are not the sweet sixteen, they are the HEAT 16 – Dayton’s best spicy foods.

Duck Curry from Thai 9

These foods are not only incredibly spicy, they are delicious as well.  So, we went not only for fire, but for good flavor too.

Without further delay, let’s see the list of these “MUST EATS.”

THE TOP 16 SPICY FOODS OF DAYTON: “THE HEAT SIXTEEN”

—1) THAI 9’s DUCK CURRY
This is Chef House’s favorite. Order it at the highest hot level and be prepared for scorching, exotic flavors.  Sliced duck meat, with vegetables in a red curry sauce. Coconut milk, pineapples, tomatoes, lime leaves, red and green peppers seal the deal.  Amazing how a creamy sauce can get so hot.  Is your mouth on fire?   It is ok, they have plenty of tea and local beers to put out the heat.

Mike’s Nashville Hot Flavored Chicken

—2) MIKE’S NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN – NASHVILLE HOT WHOLE WINGS:
These wings don’t fool around. Every knee must bow, and every brow must sweat. The thing is, even though it is so hot, you can’t help trying to risk another insane bite. This is not for the timid. If you like crazy hot, with good flavor, this is for you.  This is southern fried comfort food at its most spicy.

—3) MONGOLIAN CHICKEN, EXTRA SPICY at NORTH CHINA:
A dish you must order by special request, and you must order it extra spicy. Also, ask for a side of Chinese Chili Paste and Hot Cayenne Powder. This dish is more delicious than super hot, but if you doctor it up with the hot sauce they provide, you will sweating seeds at the table, and smiling the whole time.  Easily makes the list, as this dish is a classic.

Spicy Mongolian Chicken from North China

—4) VINDALOO FISH at AMAR INDIA RESTAURANT:
This is a delicious dish. Light up your day by getting it at level 5 or ask them for the hottest level. The only thing that will put out the fire is the white basmati rice and the Naan Bread which are both fantastic accompaniments.

—5) “I’M ON FIRE AND READY TO DIE” WINGS at ELSA’S RESTAURANTS:
These wings are so good. They are not breaded, but deep-fried to perfection before the hot sauce is slathered on top. The result is an eye-popping experience, with plenty of napkins. A couple of Bad Juans may help you, but we suggest a couple of Corona Lights at your side to wash things down.  We don’t think you will be cheering on your favorite sports teams.  You won’t be able to talk since your mouth will be full of hot wings, or something dousing the heat.  Oh by the way, you have to sign and waiver and NO refunds!

Elsa’s 911 – Im on Fire Wings

—6) THE EXTRA HOT CHICKEN TENDERS at BARGOS:
Bargo’s will catch you by surprise. Underground foodies know this place is known for their extra crazy hot sauces. It is a place where mild means medium, medium is hot, and hot is crazy hot. So you can imagine what extra hot is. These breaded tenders are tossed in a hot sauce, then rolled in crushed red pepper. What kind of crazy cook is back in that kitchen? Hot food lovers can’t get enough of the tenders but keep the tall draft beers coming. Wowsa, they are spicy!

—7) FISH WITH HOT THAI CHILI SAUCE at THAI9:

The Big Ragu is crazy for Fish with Thai Chili Sauce !

An absolutely huge piece of Walleye is served (you get choice of Tilapia or Walleye, but we always go with the walleye). The fish is deep-fried and topped with red chili paste, Order it at the hottest level. The fish is amazing and the sauce makes the whole dish. Served with rice, the portion is so big, we bet you get a take home box. But the walleye is so good, you might finish the whole, big thing.

—8) FRICKIN EX-SCREAM KILLER WINGS at FRICKERS:
The local king of wings has an entry to the list.  Breaded and ready to roll, you have to order these babies WELL DONE.  The result is crispy hot wings in an extreme sauce.  Dip them in ranch for some relief, but resistance is futile.  You may have met your frickin match on the hot scale.

Frickin Ex-Scream Chicken Wings – goodnight Irene !

—9) SPICY CHICKEN AND PORK SATE SOUP at LITTLE SAIGON:
This unsung restaurant has some of the best food in town.  This is a meal sized soup.  Choose rice or egg noodles, and choose pork, shrimp, chicken or a combo of meats.  The Sate soup means spicy and you must ask for hot sauce as well, so they bring out the squirt bottle of Asian Vietnamese Sriracha.  Drizzle that on top of soup and add some hot chili paste that is sitting on the table in a clear plastic container.  Your nose will be running as the steamy soup clears your sinuses.  Drink plenty of cold ice water provided, that will help keep things in check, as will their Oolong tea.  This meal is perfect on a cold day.  Many of us believe it has special immunity boosting and healing powers as well.  Try it and tell us what you think.

Sate Soup from Little Saigon !

—10) THE RED SALSA at TAQUERIA GARCIA MOBIL:
Located in Huber Heights near Harshman and Burkhardt by a Shell Gas Station, or on E. Third St., this mobile food truck is gaining a following.  The cup of red hot salsa is a hot, yet delicious addition to any taco, huraches, sopes and Tacos Al Pastore.  Try the red hot salsa .. it will slap your butt and call you Sally.

Hinder’s Ass Kickin Wings

—11) ASS KICKER WINGS at HINDERS SPORTS BAR & GRILL:
There is a cult following for this place of heat and eat in Tipp City.  We love sports bar with beer and wings.  Who doesn’t love hot spicy food and cold beer?  In the land of delicious wings, the Ass Kickers are the hottest option at Hinder’s, who many say are the best wings in Dayton. See for yourself and wear your big girl pants when you order this sauce.  Napkins … Ready !

—12) CHICKEN PAD THAI at HOUSE OF THAI:
Chef Dang, a well schooled owner in Beavercreek has gained a small following in the area, but still

House of Thai has incredible, Pad Thai – order it EXTRA spicy !

this restaurant is relatively unknown.  They pride themselves  with no pre-packaged sauces, no MSGs, and no pre-chopped, frozen vegetables. Every single meal is carefully prepared from scratch in traditional Thailand customs.  We have had pad Thai many places, from Vegas to California and New York.  This is some of the best we have ever eaten.  Get it at the hottest level and light your pants on fire.

—13) EL TORO’S SPICY HOUSE TABLE SALSA (SERVED BY REQUEST):
Spicy salsa with seeds floating in it is the hallmark of this restaurant.  The key is, you have to request the spicy salsa, which they bring out separately.  The dipping of tortilla chips immediately becomes more intense.  The salsa has slightly brown tint compared to the traditional red one.  And it is much spicier.  Sprinkle the sauce over enchiladas, tacos, burritos and more for a full appreciation of this hot sauce.  An absolutely delicious way to kick you meal up a notch is to drizzle the salsa over your dinner plate, for shizzle.

A Cheeseburger with Hot sauce and sweet heat mustard at Voltzy’s

—14) SMOKED WINGS WITH HOT HABENERO SAUCE at LOCK 27:
What goes great with the great beers like Mouth Breather at lock 27? The answer is the smoked chicken wings. Hot food lovers love these wings because there is an option for Hot Habenero and the plate is served with an in-house sriracha sauce.  Foodies Unite, these wings are sure to be a favorite of your taste buds.

—15) VOLTZYS CHEESEBURGER WITH SWEET HEAT MUSTARD and HOT SAUCE:
You have to ask the hamburger wizard for this “off the menu” specialty. But, he always lights up with a smile when people ask him to add hot sauce. “You’ll wake up singing touch me in the morning.” Voltzy always says.  His burgers are hearty sliders, yet kind of small.  If you go hot, get his 10 cheeseburgers for $12 deal and make them all hot sauced.  You can split it with a friend or take home half of them.  It’s the hot way to go in Voltzy’s land of steamed onions, cheese, fresh ground chuck and insults.

The sports peppers on this Chicago dog are gonna get you , but good !

—16) THE CHICAGO DOG from CHICAGO GYROS and DOGS:
Holy hot peppers Batman.  Mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes and those damn hot sports peppers! Served whole on the dog, this will light you up like Christmas!  Enjoy the heat on a hearty bun, with a delicious hot dog.  It is good, and so hot, but you cannot stop eating it.   A power packed dog full of flavor.  This is the kind of thing that makes Dayton food choices so great.

Bargo’s Chicken Tenders are Hotter than Hell

There you have it, the HEAT SIXTEEN !  The best of Spicy Dayton as picked by the Food Adventures Crew.

Honorable mention to the SPICY BROCCOLI side at MEADOWLARK !  Chef Wiley will sometimes offer this as a side to one of her fabulous dishes.  If you see it , get it!

Bourbon Street Cafe: Oooh, That Chicken….

October 6, 2016 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Bourbon Chicken – Their signature dish and main draw

Bourbon Street is again on Brown Street, and has been for a while.  The Bourbon Street Grill and Cafe is in a no frills dining room where the line can get long, but it goes fast.  From UD Students, to locals, people come from all over.  Whether for a work lunch, or taking dinner home, people are getting wise to this place.  Why? It is simple – GOOD FOOD, GOOD VALUE!  And …. oooooh that chicken, …. people go crazy over it !

This place is EXACTLY what Food Adventures is about… a locally owned spot where practically everything on the menu is a winner.  We should know it, because in the 6 or 7 times we have visited, Bourbon Street Grill & Cafe, we have tried practically every menu item.  And that’s what sets our blog apart.

Located at 1043 Brown Street

HERE’S THE SKINNY on BOURBON STREET GRILL & CAFE:

— Located at 1043 Brown St. in Dayton, they are open everyday from 11am-9pm, except Sundays when they are closed.

— Owned by Hassan Abdalla, who moved to Dayton as young adult from the Middle East.  He always had the dream of being a pilot.  His father passed away unexpectedly, forever prolonging that dream and Hassan found himself working in kitchens to make ends meet.  He worked himself up

Blackened Salmon over Corn and Potatoes

to high end restaurants, like L’Auberge.  He then decided to open his own business, for years doing catering and festivals.  He opened a restaurant on W Second Street, then took an opportunity on a new location on Brown Street.

— They still cater and make several festival appearances during the year.

— Note that their chicken is grilled thigh meat, that is pulled and finished on the flat grill and cubed.  The result is a one of a kind, almost melt in your mouth taste.

— Helpful and hard working staff, always busting their butts to fill orders.

We first were exposed to these guys at festivals, and after eating their food at Big Brews and Blues, then Garlic Fest, we have been hitting the brick and mortar location regularly.  Over time, the Food Adventure Crew has developed a list of Bourbon Street Grill and Cafe’s absolute best dishes.  Or as we call them, our patented “Must Eats.”

Spicy Chicken over White Rice

MUST EATS at BOURBON STREET GRILL & CAFE:

— BOURBON CHICKEN:  The signature dish.  The mother ship on a plate.  We suggest white rice or spicy rice with this, although many enjoy lo mein noodles or steamed vegetables as a side.  When they serve this chicken, they scoop it up, then get another scoop of sauce and drizzle it over top.  We drool every time.

Sides served right out of the piping hot steamers

— BLACKENED SALMON:  Cajun spices dust the pan seared salmon filet.  Again we suggest it over rice, but there are so many choices from beans to corn to potatoes, the sky is the limit.  But the Salmon… holy cow is it good.

— SPICY CHICKEN:  This is the Big Ragu’s favorite dish.  He sweated in the summer heat and got lit up at a couple of festivals but it was worth it.  He likes the spicy chicken poured over white rice, to cool down some of the heat.  But choose whatever side you want.

Havent had cornbread this good since Burbanks

— CORNBREAD: An incredible throwback to southern style cornbread.  One slight problem, they do not have butter on site.  So if you are eating in, byob – “bring your own butter.”  We could eat a brownie pan of this stuff.

— THE CHEESEBURGER: A 1/3 pound burger patty loaded on a sturdy bun with all the fixins.  They top it off right.  A delicious mix of flavors, napkins recommended for this one.

Honorable Mention:  — The PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH is a nice surprise (get extra mayo).  Also, the BLACKENED SEA BASS is delicious.

Even their Burger surprised us

From salads to beans, to edible fried tortilla bowl options, you have an open canvas.  With so many good entrees and sides to choose from, you can get lost in their menu.  One thing you wont lose, is a lot of money, because the menu is a great value.

Now you know about this stellar place on Brown Street.  Go check out Bourbon Street Grill & Cafe and make your own combinations.  It is a great place, with an incredible owners story behind it. A story of hard work and perserverence.

Make sure you browse the photos below in our picture gallery.  Our food pics are incomparable.

Remember, we are not food critics, we are 3 people with a passion for food.  Follow Food Adventures on our Facebook Page by clicking HERE.  It is a foodie’s paradise.  Also, catch our upcoming appearances on DaytonFoodies.com since 2008.

Hot House! Local Chef Heats Things Up With New Sriracha Sauce

May 30, 2014 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Hot stuff in Dayton

Dayton Chef LeeAnne House, with her Housemade Sriracha Sauce !

We’ve got the boss with the hot sauce right here!  Want to heat up your Food Adventures at home?  Then look no further.

Local chef, our own LeeAnne House has made her mark in the kitchens of upscale area restaurants. Now she is out on her own, with a new company called Housemade.  Her first bottled product is a popular one, called Housemade Sriracha Sauce. She started experimenting with new sauces in her apartment kitchen and the batches grew, and so did the demand.  Now she has taken her saucy self corporate.

Believe it or not, sriracha is a style of sauce, and not a brand name.  We are all familiar with that plastic bottle with the rooster and green spout.  This gives that sauce a kick in the pants.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— LeeAnne grew up in the food industry.  Her parents at one time owned various restaurants like Lincoln Park Grille, Oregon Express, and others.  LeeAnne worked her way up from bussing tables to chief hottie.

bottling plant

Bottles of Housemade Sriracha, Ready to be Labeled

— The sauce took a year and a half to perfect.  Originally home cooked and home produced, she is now off  to the big time with the same, natural recipe.  Food Adventures have been trying her home batch sriracha sauces for months, so we are especially happy to see her recent success.

— This sauce won 1st prize in the 2014 Louisiana Cajun Hot Sauce Festival, for the best specialty chili sauce, and is being blogged about nationally from California to Nashville.  Foodies and Food Adventurers agree, it’s fantastic!

— A bottle of this sauce goes a long way, good thing there is a 2 year shelf life.

WHY IS THIS SAUCE A MUST EAT?

— FLAVOR:  That is the most important thing, right?  Not just heat for the sake of heat, but good flavor is what a sauce is all about.  Housemade Sriracha is sweeter, hotter and meaner than the sriracha you are used to.   There is a good amount of tang and zing to get your tastebuds rolling.

 — ALL PEPPERS in this sauce are Thai Chili Peppers, and the sauce has NO STEMS.  This is huge, because most mass produced sauces have stems ground into them, thereby changing the flavor of the sauce.  Housemade keeps the flavor truer to the pepper itself with the tedious process of stem removal.

— NATURAL INGREDIENTS:  We wont give away the recipe, just read the side of the label for the natural ingredients.  Did we mention it is vegan and gluten-free ?

— LOCALLY MADE – Whenever possible local ingredients are used, local farmers, and the sauce is assembled from Dayton to Chillicothe.  Hello, support local, buy local.  Expect different sauces from Housemade in the future !

The Big Ragu knows you can get Housemade Sriracha at Foremost Seafood

The Big Ragu knows where to get Housemade Sriracha, and now, you do too !

The Big Ragu loves the sauce on chili, shrimp, wings and anything mexican (nachos, tacos, tortas, burritos and sopes).

LITE BITES: Try the sriracha on egg white omelettes, roasted veggies, homemade vegetable soups, and quinoa.

Housemade Sriracha Sauce has made its way into local restaurants and has been appearing on specials at Lily’s Bistro, and pizzas at  Oregon Express to name a couple.  We expect more locally owned restaurants to follow this trend.  In fact, the demand has been so good, that a second batch has already gone into production.

WHERE CAN YOU BUY THE BOTTLES OF HOUSEMADE SRIRACHA?

— Arrow Wine & Spirits

— Clash Consignments

— Eclectic Essentials

— Foremost Seafood

— Healthy Alternative Markets

— The Spice Rack

— Yankee Street Market

In more ways than one, it is the hottest product in Dayton.  Housemade Sriracha, we love you, you hot thang you ….

Speaking of hotness, check out Food Adventures on Facebook  and “like” them HERE

A Second Helping of .. KABUKI

April 17, 2014 By Dayton937 4 Comments

Fresh Salmon and Fresh Tuna at Kabuki: Test Your Food Adventure Limits

“Please, sir, I want some more.”  —Oliver Twist

Food Adventures has a new, original feature called a “Second Helping of…”

Food Adventures already sets itself apart from the rest, because we dine at a place many times before an article materializes on Dayton Most Metro.   From time to time, we will revisit some of our favorite Miami Valley eateries, and let you know about new specialty items that are delicious, or standard fare that you “gotta try.”   This is not a recycling of an old article, but some new takes on the menu.  You can still expect the same killer “food porn” photos, and “must eats.”

This time, we dive into one of our all-time favorite Food Adventure spots.   So sit down, pull yourself to the table, and enjoy a second helping of.. KABUKI !

You may recall our original article on Kabuki Korean and Japanese Restaurant, in Centerville, if not CLICK HERE.   The restaurant continues to ‘pack em in’, and has a loyal following, like no other sushi spot in the Dayton area.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Del Sot Bibimbob: A Korean Dish

— Located at 848 S. Main St. in Centerville, the menu is mostly Japanese, with a touch of Korean specialties as well

— The secret to this restaurant’s success is fresh, delicious food.  The kitchen area and sushi bar are immaculate.  We believe that a clean environment is especially important when serving raw food.  It also shows respect for the art of sushi !

— Pay attention and save with coupon specials through email, mail and facebook!

— Warning, peak hours may become crowded in this cozy, tight dining room.

Kabuki is a perfect place to get out of your comfort zone and experience a true Food Adventure.   Try something new and wild.  This is the spot to do it !  We have ordered almost everything on the menu and love theses sushi rolls: Boston Roll, Playboy Roll, Mexican Roll, Rock N Roll Roll, and the Spider Roll, along with some other favorites:

 MUST EATS:

Tuna Tataki: Seared for Your Pleasure

— SHRIMP TEMPURA ROLL:  A must eat for the sushi beginner.  The roll is stuffed with cooked, fried shrimp. What’s not to love?

— DEL SOT BIBIMBOB:  From the Korean menu, this is a true Food Adventure pick.  The dish is served in a hot stone bowl.  It includes mixed vegetables& beef served over steamed rice , all topped with a fried egg.  It is served with a side of hot & spicy sauce.  Big Ragu liked it so much, he actually danced and sang a new Hanson  song “MMM Bibimbob.”

— RAW SALMON (SAKE):  This is a slice of uncooked salmon on top of rice.  Yes it is raw, but drip some soy and wasabi on it, and it melts in your mouth.  We don’t know the secret, but Kabuki has some of the tastiest salmon in town.  We just keep coming back for more.

— RAW TUNA (MAGURO): A raw piece of tuna, over a small ball of rice.  So hearty, it is almost like a piece of steak.  So full of protein, one bite will make you feel nourished and alive.  For $2.75 per piece, it is an exotic delicacy.

— ATLANTIC ROLL: A seafood lovers dream, with specialties from the ocean.  This roll is filled with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, & avocado.   On top of the roll is snapper and wasabi sauce.   Grab a pair of chopsticks and work some magic.

Honorable Mention: Not in the mood for experimenting?  Then try the Chicken Teryaki or Katsu Chicken Meal, guaranteed to please the “meat and potato” types who love BBQ Chicken.

With healthy eating a concern to so many people, we will share a favorite menu item that will keep you bathing suit ready .. Wear it to the restaurant, we don’t care.

LITE BITES:

Kabuki: One of Dayton’s Best

 — TUNA TATAKI:  This ‘must eat’ is big on taste, light on calories.  It is a plate of seared, ahi tuna, splashed with a citrus vinegar sauce.  A cross between cooked and raw, this dish is a simple ‘back to the basics’ taste of sushi.  The fresh tuna is healthy and pleasing to the tastebuds, which makes it a win-win combination.

Looking for a great lunch or dinner option that isn’t the same old thing?  Then take advantage of the offerings at Kabuki like we do, and have yourself your own Japanese and Korean Food Adventure.  You will not be disappointed.  With a website name like EatAtKabuki.com, you know this stuff is good.

What a Gas! AMBUCS Chili Cookoff Winners Announced

November 27, 2013 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Jimmie's Ladder 11 Chili was the Peoples Choice for # 1 (served with a jalapeno corn muffin)

Ladder 11 was the People’s Choice Winner (served with a jalapeno muffin) Click to Enlarge

The people have spoken at the 27th Annual Charity Chili cookoff and Casino Night for AMBUCS.  And they were tooting more than their horns the next day!

For the 2nd year in a row, JIMMIES LADDER 11 was the people’s choice for best chili.   BUT NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS ….. THE FOOD ADVENTURES CREW with THE BIG RAGU have their takes on the chili contest and it may surprise you.

Your humble Food Adventurers were asked to be special celebrity guest judges and we ate every station, every bowl and left no pot unturned.  We also had hot dogs, coney dogs, wine, beer and soft drinks.  The frigid evening was PERFECT for chili tasting.

There was spicy chili, mild chili, chicken chili, no bean chili, .. there was even a gumbo !   Topping options were cheese, onions, hot sauce some had sour cream ! …  So Poopsie, how do you like your chili ?

THE BIG RAGU’S WINNER: Tie between THE BRUNCH CLUB and THE TROPICS

The Brunch Club had an amazingly sweet chili that was delicious.  The Tropics entry was just as addicting.  It was a  with a hearty, traditional chili with great flavors.

Honorable Mention to the other great chili’s: Longhorn Steakhouses’ Brisket chili, and of course the chili from Jimmie’s Ladder 11.  The Spiciest chili was Harrigan’s chili.  Other great, hearty traditional chili’s included Elsa’s Restaurant and Slyder’s Tavern.   Buckin Donkey Grille’s traditional chili was great, and they even served chicken sausage gumbo that was to die for.  Even amateur entries like Chef Daddy’s Firehouse won hearts with their chicken chili.

The real winner here was the AMBUCS charity who raises money to help disabled children and adults in the Miami Valley.  It is a local chapter and the funds stay local to help those in need in the Dayton area.  If you have never attended this event, it is a complete blast.  There was chili, beer, hot dogs, wine and pop (all you can eat).   There were casino games like blackjack, showdown, dice games and spin the wheel games.  The upstairs area even had a Bingo area !

It was a true Food Adventure and Gamblers paradise!   You have 12 month to get your gastro-intestinal tract in shape for this one.  Don’t miss this event next year, it truly was a gas !

Want more photos and tongue in cheek fun from the one and only FOOD ADVENTURES CREW?  Then  “like” us on FACEBOOK by clicking HERE.

We are not food critics, we are two “foodies in our forties” who love to eat !    This is not our job, this is our hobby, so we don’t have an agenda !  That’s why our stuff is original!  Often imitated, but never duplicated you can find us every week right here on Dayton Most Metro !

As always, check out our gallery photos below for some amazing food shots !
