Linden Avenue Eatery Provides Taste of Puerto Rico

November 16, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Update:
This Saturday, November 16, at 7 p.m., Antojitos Criollos will host a “Puerto Rican Christmas” buffet. Pedro “El Jibaro” Rodriguez will step in as musical entertainment. The buffet will include Lechon Asado (roasted pork), Pavo en Fricase (turkey fricasseed in wine sauce), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), yuca al Mojo (yuca in mojo sauce), guinetitos con mollejas (chicken gizzards with green bananas), ensalada de papa (potato salad), ensalada verde (green salad), and pan con ajo (garlic bread)–many staples that can be found in American holiday meals. Yet another reminder that our brothers and sisters across the pond are not so different…

antojitos-criollosCancel your plans for this Saturday night. You’re spending it in Puerto Rico.

If you’re not Hispanic, you probably haven’t yet heard about one of the unsung gems of the Dayton dining scene…but your time, and your passport, have arrived. Tucked away in the corner of a tiny, unassuming strip mall in East Dayton lies a Caribbean culinary oasis: Antojitos Criollos. Spanish for “little country cravings,” this down-home island eatery at 3937 Linden Avenue, directly across from Eastown, slings Puerto Rican food so authentic that even citizens who’ve emigrated from the island say it’s the kind of food you can’t find anywhere else on U.S. soil. And this Saturday, August 24, Antojitos will host its monthly, reservation-only all-you-can-eat buffet, complete with live salsa music.

Francisco Matias and his family

“We opened here four years ago,” said owner Francisco Matias in his native Spanish. “The week before Thanksgiving, 2009. Before that, we were in Cleveland. When my family was there, we went to festivals all the time to cook and serve food, but we did not have a restaurant. Different people from different towns said, ‘Why don’t you come and set up here? Your food is very authentic and we’d like to have you here.’

“We went to many banks for small business loans, “Matias said. “We were always denied. And then we met a man named Miguel Ten [President/CEO of Springfield’s First Diversity Management Group]. He’s Puerto Rican, and he had tried our food before. He helps civic groups and helps people find jobs. We came to him with a business plan, and he immediately said, “How much money do you need?” He’s the only person who ever offered us money. He did not charge us interest; when we made back the money we’d borrowed, we returned it. But he knew Puerto Rican food and had eaten ours – that’s the catch – so he believed in us.”

Antojitos Criollos marinated chicken kabob with rice and beans served at this summer’s Cityfolk and Hispanic Heritage Festivals

That was 2009. Matias did studies in each of Ohio’s major cities, starting with Cleveland – but Cleveland bore tremendous competition in the same style of food. Other cities, like Columbus and Cincinnati, proved too costly. But the family’s food had been a hit at Dayton’s Hispanic Heritage Festival, and Dayton boasted a widespread and passionate food culture, but while Italian and Mexican and Asian and Indian restaurants seemed to flourish at every turn, Dayton still had plenty of market room when it came to island cuisine.

And so Matias learned of the small Linden Ave. storefront. It had not housed an operating business for several months; previously serving Vietnamese cuisine, it was to become a Mexican restaurant, but an immigration issue cut through and sent the staff packing, never to be heard from again. The Mexican restaurant never opened, and Matias found an opportunity.

“We met with the owner of the building,” Matias said, “and we got a good rapport going. We said, ‘We’ve only done sales at festivals, so we don’t know how this is going to work out, and also we would have to do a lot of work on the interior, so can you give us a break?’ And he did. We got two months rent free, and by then, we were on our feet.”

In its short time in the Gem City, Antojitos Criollos has won awards from all over the state of Ohio, and it’s easy to see why: Matias and his crew serve up recipes his wife, Iris Gonzalez, brought with her from the island. The restaurant features the kind of savory meals that feel like someone’s grandmother is in the kitchen cooking just for her family, and you somehow got lucky enough to receive an invite.

A quick glance over the menu will calm the unadventurous while thrilling with its casual twists on the unknown: beans and white rice, flank steak and onions, fried pork chops, sautéed chicken in tomato sauce… While eating at Antojitos, a mind-blowing truth emerges in the most unexpected of moments. You’re eating pure comfort food that seems to warm you to your very soul, and it seems in so many ways like things you’ve eaten a million times going all the way back to your childhood. You look down at your plate in wonder and think, ‘Huh. Somewhere in San Juan, a family is sitting down right now to this same dish’ – but you’re also thinking about when you sat down to a decidedly similar dish with your own family, so many years ago. Everything around you slips away, and you realize that while colors and cultures and languages may vary from one region to the next, when you get right down to it, we really aren’t all that different.

The third Saturday of every month (do yourself a favor and be mindful of that – August is the third month in 2013 to span five Saturdays, and it is always the fourth, as opposed to the last), Antojitos hosts a special buffet dinner. For a flat rate of $20 ($10 for children 12 and under), an all-you-can-eat spread is set up with a massive, multi-option spread of the best the establishment has to offer. The offerings change each month — and when one dish empties, it is not refilled, but replaced with something new. Mainstays, however, are the stellar rice and beans and their herb-rubbed, roasted pork, which also carries a hint of citrus and is simply one of the greatest dining delights in the Miami Valley region. This weekend’s buffet will also include, among many other things, Greek rice, made in beef broth with bacon and cabbage. Vegetarians, fear not; there is plenty to be had for those who don’t eat meat.

The meal is not the only thing, however, that makes buffet nights at Antojitos Crillojos special. The regular menu is not available, and eating on these nights is available only by reservation, for dishes are made to feed the amount of people expected. This makes it a private party, which means alcohol cannot be served … but it  can be carried in, so this would be the occasion to bring that special bottle of wine you’ve been saving or that craft beer you waited for all season, or even your favorite bottle of rum.

227603_401854803231419_736680623_n

Gina and son del caribe at Antjitos

The most important thing to remember on buffet nights is that you are no longer on the mainland. The buffet opens at approximately 7 p.m., and the band starts at approximately 8 p.m. That can wiggle in one direction or the other as far as an hour or more. Relax, buddy: you’re on island time now. It’s Saturday night. You’ve got amazing, endless food in front of you. If you planned right, you’ve got a good drink in your hand. And at some point, you’ve got a night of free entertainment ahead. What’s your hurry? You’ve dropped twenty bucks, plus tip, for one of the best values and cultural experiences in the entire region. No one’s rushing the night – and neither should you.

“It’s so easy to get lost in the music, food and the joy of the multi-generational crowd,” said Laura Scandura Rea, a program manager at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s air force research laboratory. “I’ve been all over the world, and when I travel, I love to stumble onto small restaurants with amazing music and food – I want to experience the local lifestyle. Every time I’ve gone to the Saturday night buffet at Antojitos, at some point I’ve looked up and thought, ‘I can’t believe I’m in a strip mall in my own backyard.’”

Joni Arnold agrees. A native of Puerto Rico, she learned about Antojitos from coworker Rea, who brought her to a buffet night last spring.

“As a native Puerto Rican,” Arnold said, “I’d say their food is deliciously authentic, our version of ‘soul food.’ Puerto Ricans are very friendly, festive people who like good food, good music, and good company. That’s exactly the experience I’ve had going there for Saturday buffet. It feels like I’m back on the island – “en la isla,” as we say – enjoying a Sunday afternoon with a friend whose mom is a fantastic cook. My husband, Fred, is American, and has been traveling to Puerto Rico for over 20 years, and he feels the same. It’s been a real treat!”

Gina Stough, lead singer of Son del Caribe, cherishes the monthly ritual.

“I brought the band there before or after a gig and made introductions,” she said,” and we all fell in love with the 382535_4907096715714_1865351029_nplace. It’s just like a Mom-and-Pop in Puerto Rico. We jam for fun there because we love it. They feel just like home; their food is home for our musicians. And the same can be same for how welcome we feel. It’s home and family for us. They say in Spanish, ‘Donde no hay familia, se hace una.’ ‘Where there is not family, we make one.’ We fill each other’s need for extended family.”

Lovingly patting the counter, Francisco Matias said, “It’s been okay. We are very happy here.”

Antojitos Criollos is located at 3937 Linden Ave. in Dayton. Hours are 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday – Friday, and 1 – 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Buffets with live music from Son del Caribe are held the fourth Saturday of each month at 7 p.m., by reservation only; adults $20, children 12 and under $10. Music begins at approximately 8 p.m. For more information, call (937) 259-2207, or visit http://facebook.com/antojitos.criollosrest, and to view the full regular menu, visit http://antojitoscriollosrestaurant.net.

Star City Brewing Company Opens Tonight in Miamisburg!

November 15, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

625551_471227849617817_685350317_n-1Originally a sawmill on the Miami & Erie Canal in the 1828, The Peerless Mill in Miamisburg became a restaurant in 1929. After serving up food for over 8 decades, a major fire destroyed a good portion of the building in 2003.  The stone floors and big ceiling beams survived and after a 2 year renovation, the restaurant reopened in 2005. Owner Gary Wiegle had taken out huge loans to rebuild and was faced with  increased competition  and touch economic times, which he wasn’t able to overcome.  The restaurant fell into foreclosure and closed in 2008.  After several misfires, it looks like the newest owners, brothers Justin and Brian Kohnen and Brian Yavorsky made have just the recipe to succeed at 319 S. Second St.

The Star City Brewery joins the explosion of microbreweries that are invading the Miami Valley.  With their grand opening today (Friday, Nov 15th) at 4pm until photo10pm with food catered in from TJ Chumps and Saturday from 1-10pm with a visit from the Harvest Mobile Cuisine Food Truck.   There will be 4 beers on tap to start. I was lucky enough to attend a preview tasting last weekend and enjoyed a flight that included:

Belgian Blonde Ale (ABV 3.8%, IBU 21)  reminiscent of the German style Kolsch.  Light bodied and lager like. $4 pint/$10 growler
Bavarian Hefeweizen (ABV 4/6% IBU 10)  an unfiltered wheat beer with a light banana and clove flavor $5 pint /$13 growler
IPA (ABV 7.4% IBU 56) deep golden in color hoppy with citrus and pine notes. $5 pint /$13 growler
Oatmeal Stout (ABV 5/2% IBU 28) and my favorite by far – with a slight sweetness and roasted hop flavor. $5 pint /$13 growler

Eventually there will be 8 taps, which according to Justin Kohnen will always include the standard four already mentioned and 4 seasonal brews that will rotate.  Food will be catered in from local Miamisburg restaurants, but opening their kitchen is in the plans, “but that’s sometime  in the future,” says Kohnen. He explained that there were a lot of renovations and repairs needed on the 14,000 square foot building and they concentrated on the tap room first.  It is in the plans to continue renovating so they can start to open some of the banquet rooms for special event rentals.

Even before opening Star City began teaching home brewing classes including extract brewing, all grain brewing.  There next class scheduled for Thurs, Nov 21st form 6:30 – 8:30pm will be about Understanding Flavor Profiles.  This class is for aspiring craft enthusiasts and new home brewers who want to understand the many beer styles, origins and tasting profiles.  And class attendees will receive 50 cents off of beer during the class.  $25/person.

Star City offered membership and prior to opening  already had over 60 members.  Aside from declaring yourself a craft beer enthusiast, being a member of Star City Brewing comes with certain members only perks. A few such perks include being the first to sample some of our experimental brews and earning double loyalty points on select days.

The standard Level 1 membership includes:0000012_300

In November of 2011, things changed in South Park.  With the opening of a cozy coffee shop  who focused on high quality, hand crafted beverages and snacks, suddenly  the Dayton community began to flock to this Wayne Avenue location.

Owner Shane Anderson explains that Ghostlight Coffee is a “multi-roaster

Ghostlight Coffee has become a  popular “community minded” coffeehouse, hosting many AfterHours events such as music and poetry and featuring local artists on it’s walls.  It has gained popularity amongst touring musicians for it’s “listening room” atmosphere, different from most bar venues that these musicians frequently encounter.  It also has become the home of the “Gem City Poetry Stage” and previously hosted the popular “Story Slamm” series until they moved to the larger Dayton Black Box theatre. Just recently they opened a meeting room which doubles as a quiet study space for it’s many university students and professors.  The business will soon expand services to offer coffee & espresso bar catering for events and online ordering of coffees and gift boxes for individual and corporate orders.

But with their second anniversary comes another expansion:   Ghostlight at Night in the Dayton Art Institute!

Ghostlight at Night will feature hand-poured, artisan roasted coffees by Ghostlight Coffee and hand-crafted signature cocktails by the Dayton Cocktail Co., as well as a small-plate menu of sharable snacks. Ghostlight at Night hours will be Tuesday – Friday, 3:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., beginning Friday, November 22 and continuing through January 3.

“The holidays are a busy time here at the museum, and this wonderful new partnership with Ghostlight Coffee allows us to offer guests a unique evening experience1470317_392642647533235_1664257405_n in Leo Bistro,” says The DaytonArt Intitute’s Associate Director Jane A. Black. “Ghostlight at Night will complement Elite Catering’s weekday lunch and weekend brunch service at the Bistro.”

Ghostlight at Night will host several evening events at the Leo Bistro location, including:
“The Art of Coffee” Tastings Events, including November 22nd…Tasting of the new Panama Geisha coffee, roasted by Deeper Roots Coffee.  The roaster will be on hand to talk about this rare coffee varietal.
“The Art of the Cocktail” Events, hosted by The Dayton Cocktail Co., including December 5 Repeal Day Party, featuring prohibition era cocktails and punches.
Live Music at Leo Bistro, including December 6, featuring The Soucek Jazz Trio, a popular ensemble comprised of area music educators frequently performs at the Wayne Ave. coffeehouse to a packed house.

10?’s with Rick Schaefer of Brock Masterson’s Catering

November 13, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

284144_1872989506739_274657_nThere’s rarely a festival in Dayton where you don’t find Brock Masterson’s hawking their “Down East” Blue Lump Crab Cakes, “Fatty” Reuben, Grilled Salmon  and Brock’s Legendary 3-Potato Hash.  There’s always a line, yet the food is so good it’s worth the wait. Brock Masterson’s Catering was founded in 1986 by Chef Rick Schaefer, and while catering is his main business, Brock Masterson’s can be found grilling out at over 20 festivals throughout Dayton region. But now you can also find Brock Masterson’s in your grocery store.  “Customers have been asking for years about the special blend of spices that we use to season our grilled meats, so bottling the spices for the customers just made sense,” said Rick Schaefer, Owner & Executive Chef of Brock Masterson’s.

Brock’s Dust, cooking & grilling spices come in four varieties:  Brock’s

4367122

Dust for Poultry, Beef, Seafood and Pork.  Each one is specifically formulated to enhance that type of meat.  Chef Rick suggests sprinkling the meat liberally before cooking, grilling or broiling, and then sprinkle Brock’s Dust again immediately before serving.

Brock’s Dust is available locally at all 3 Dorothy Lane Market locations, both Dot’sMarket locations, through our website www.brockmastersons.com or by visiting our booth at an upcoming festival.

And while we were talking with Rick about his new spice line, we insisted he do  10 question interview:

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

Butter, it just makes everything taste better and it’s God’s gift to the culinary universe.

1478_470331306335239_127566160_n

The Big Fatty- Brock’s reuben Puff Pastry, it’s a pain to work with.

 What ingredient do you dread?
Puff Pastry, it’s a pain to work with.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

Parmesan encrusted Sea Bass with Buerre Blanc Sauce

What’s your favorite pig out food?

 Cheese Burgers of any kind.

What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

I make it a point to seek out and dine at local restaurants.  Some of my favorites:  Golden Nugget for breakfast, Amar India or Ajanta for lunch, and The Oakwood Club for dinner.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Recipes are over-rated, unless baking where exact measurements are critical; don’t be afraid to add your favorite spice or ingredient to make the dish your own.  Plus, always have fun, some of our best dishes we serve were originally “failed science experiments”.  Invite friends and family over to share your culinary creations; this is the perfect time for bonding.  Food is the tie that binds and instills comradery among family.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Well, at a fantasy table where we could intelligently discuss music, science, religion and social issues:  I would invite: Albert Einstein, Mother Teresa, John Lennon, and Carl Sagan.  The reality is that I would give almost anything to just have one more meal with my 4 grandparents.  Some of my very best childhood memories were making and eating holiday meals with my grandparents.

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?37057_10150833109023717_898274413_n

There are just too many to name, but I do have the utmost respect for anyone who can open a local restaurant/business and go through the daily grind of making it succeed.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Day off, what’s that?!? Just kidding.  I love to drive, go for walks/bike rides on the local bike trails, eat out at local restaurants, and because it’s open 24 hours a day, I do find time to sneak away to the Horseshoe Casino to play Baccarat or throw some dice.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

Lucky Break:  I have the very best employees and the greatest staff in Dayton and I love them all.

Disaster:  Well, we were at a client’s home, and something almost too horrifying to mention happened.  I went to the bathroom, just #1, I swear, flushed and much to my horror, the water started rising.  I reached down below the toilet to turn off the water valve, but this was an older home and there was no shut-off valve.  There was no plunger, coat hanger, nothing.  As the water started spilling over the lid, the most horrifying thoughts were running through my head since the hosts were entertaining just a few feet away in the dining room.  I grabbed the only thing I could, the host’s elegant, embroidered towels and sopped up the mess.  I peeked around the bathroom door and flagged down one of my staff members.  She thought it was strange that I wanted to see her in the bathroom, she walked over, peeked inside, looked up at me with wide eyes and ran to get paper towels and a trash bag.  We cleaned up everything and threw the mess into the trash bag.  Somehow in the midst of cleaning up we got the giggles and could not stop laughing.  We were bent over laughing so hard at how ridiculous the situation was.  I looked at my employee and told her we had to find the washing machine and pronto.  While the guests continued eating, unaware of the scene in the nearby bathroom; I quickly threw the towels into the washing machine.  Once they were cleaned and dried, I hung them back up in the bathroom.  A gentleman had been in the bathroom right before I was and I blame this entirely horrifying situation on him.

Welcoming More Brew Goodness To Our Community – Eudora Brewing Company

November 11, 2013 By Brian Petro 1 Comment

Eudora Brewing Company Logo

Welcome to the community Eudora Brewing!

Eudora, a nymph from Greek mythology, is a bringer of water. She is part of a larger group called the Hyades, daughters of Atlas and nicknamed “the Rainy ones”. Their brother, Hyas, was killed in a hunting accident, and their tears became the rain. They were afterwards turned into a cluster of stars that we can still see in the head of Taurus, also called the Hyades. The water that they bring is one of the four critical ingredients in beer, along with yeast, hops, and barley. The owner and head brewer of the soon-to-open Eudora Brewing Company, Neil Chabut, knows the importance of water to the brewing process, and has integrated water awareness, and a few other surprises, into the fabric of the business.

Neil has been brewing his own beer for over three years, but it was not until about a year ago that he started considering starting his own brewery. He did his research, working at Brewtensils and learning the craft there while speaking to other breweries in the area. He also spoke to many of the other developing breweries in the area, learning about the business side of it and elements he needed to consider as he was going to go into business for himself.

The building itself, located at 4716 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, is very intimate. The brewing vats are in clear view from wherever you are sitting in the room. The brewery offers its five beers that they brew on site, as well as some seasonal beers that will be developed as the business moves forward. The beers they are initially offering are their year round beers:

  • Sundowner Blonde: This is a very refreshing, lightly flavored beer. It has a hint of summer mixed into the caramel undertones.
  • Boomerang IPA:  This National Homebrew Competition finalist beer has all the hops you could possibly want, and then some. The hoppiness hides some other nice spice notes, offering a great flavor even if you do not like aggressive IPAs.
  • Bee’s Knees Honey APA: A balance between the Blonde and the IPA. The honey adds a light sweetness, and the hops in the pale ale add some bite. A delightful beer from start to finish.
  • Mother Fuggle Brown Ale: A tasty, well roasted brown ale. It has a combination of nutty, chocolately, and roasted flavors that make this a complex and flavorful ale.
  • Tunderball Oatmeal Stout: Deep, dark, roasted, smooth excellence. Oatmeal adds some thickness, and the dark chocolate flavor does the rest.
Fight of beers on a wood block

A little something for everyone…which will you try first?

They sell flights of the beers they have on tap, as well as growlers so you can take home your favorites. They are currently working on the ability to offer customers the opportunity to brew their own Eudora beer recipes in five to ten gallon batches. It is still a few months away, but Neil  is looking forward to offering some hands on learning AND the chance to take home and enjoy beer you created! The initial food offering is going to be light snacks and hot dogs, but Neil is looking to partner with local food trucks while working on building out their kitchen offerings.

Helping local brewers and looking to work with local businesses are not the only ways Eudora is looking to give back to the community. They are also a partner with charity:water, an organization that is working hard to bring clean water to the ends of the earth.Three percent of all profits at Eudora will be  going to this charity, and they use all of that money to fund their efforts. Neil knows that water is the biggest ingredient in beer, and that they can make sure some of the beer we enjoy brings water to people that need it.

The Eudora Brewing Company is looking to become another of the big stars in the Dayton brewing scene. Their pro-community attitude and warm atmosphere are going to go a long way to making this a great place to stop for a beer in Kettering. The real draw is going to be the incredible beers Eudora Brewing Company will be creating. Neil has already proven he can make beers that earn national recognition. Starting at the grand opening on November 15th and 16th, from 4 to 11 PM, Dayton is going to get an incredible taste of what one person can do with all the water the Hyades are raining down on us. Go out and welcome them!

Harvest Party at Lily’s Bistro

November 7, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

1383741_228505223978404_1499545334_nJust in time to help you plan your holiday entertaining, Lily’s  Bistro in the Oregon District is throwing a casual tasting party on Thurs, Nov 14th from 6 -8pm.  Lily’s General Manager Emily Mendenhall says, “this will be a fun, easy going way to try some wines, tasting can sometimes be stuffy, and that’s so nut us.”

They will be featuring six wines paired with six seasonal snacks that will allow you to find the perfect wine to serve at home for your celebrations.  Staff will b on hand to help advise you on what wines will best compliment your holiday menu.  Once you choose your favorites, you’ll even be able to purchase them right there at retail prices.  You’ll want to pick up your ticket in advance, they are $30, and it’s a great excuse to stop by the bistro and treat yourself to lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch!

Here’s a tip from DaytonDining on knowing how much wine to have on hand for your holiday meal:

A safe rule of thumb is to figure that each guest will consume one to two drinks per hour. If you’re focused on wine and not serving cocktails before dinner, assume you’ll need enough for an hour of appetizers before dinner (in case that turkey takes a little time getting up to temperature or Aunt Mary arrives late.) Then consider years past: did dinner last 20 minutes and then everyone went back to the football game? Or did Uncle Bob tell stories for so long that everyone ended up eating third and fourth helpings? Are you day-drinkers (and eaters) or is dinner after sundown?

Multiply the number of hours you plan to entertain times the number of guests times two drinks per guest, and you’ve got the number of glasses of wine you might need. If you’re serving standard 750-mL bottles, it’s safe to assume you’ll get about four glasses per bottle, so divide your glass number by 4 to find out how many bottles you need.

Got that? Guests x hours x 2 = glasses.
Glasses / 4 = bottles.

So if you’re hosting eight people and planning to have a half hour of pre-dinner snacks followed by a dinner that lasts about an hour and a half,  figure 8 people x 2 hours x 2 drinks per hour = 32 glasses / 4 glasses per bottle = 8 bottles.

DaytonMostMetro.com will be sending 2 guests to Lily’s Harvest Party.  If you’d like to enter our random drawing to win, like and share this post and fill out the entry form below: [form 55 “DMM Contest Entry – Generic”]

An Adult Trick or Treat? Try Winans Chocolates

October 31, 2013 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Why should kids have all the fun on Halloween?

Why should kids have all the fun this Halloween season?  Adults around Dayton love chocolate and deserve to eat themselves into a sugar high as well.  FOOD ADVENTURES has been hitting Winans Fine Chocolates and Coffees for years, and think this is a perfect time to load up on some of their elegant chocolate specialties.  Go ahead, look at your diet for a day and go “BOO!!”

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Founded near Piqua, this business has been owned by the same family for four generations

— Specialties include chocolate and candy creations, coffees and even a decent wine selection.

— Relaxing, inviting atmosphere to have a glass of wine and some chocolates.  Some stores have decent  patio seating as well.

— These are fine chocolates, and with quality comes a price.  Don’t expect cheap deals, this is the good stuff.

— The candies are made locally with natural ingredients.   We love products made in the Miami Valley, and pure is good too!

— Three area locations:  6735 Miller Lane in North Dayton, 2806 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd(Dayton Mall) and 3510 Pentagon Rd. in Beavercreek.

Break open a Bourbon Cherry from Winans. You won’t be the same.

Winans Fine Chocolates and Coffees captures the elegance and decadence of chocolate in their stores.  The display cases and sitting areas allow for browsing in a rush, or a slow indulgence.  Speaking of indulgence, brace yourself for the “Must Eats” at Winans!

MUST EATS:

— BOURBON CHERRIES:  There is nothing quite like these chocolate covered cherries in Dayton.  Chef House, Big Ragu and Hungry Jax eat enough of these to get a hangover.

— MAINE BLUEBERRY COFFEE:  Yes, you read that right.  Food Adventures will tell you “Don’t knock it til you try it.”  He highly recommends this uniquely flavored coffee.

— WETZELS:  Winan’s chocolate covered pretzels are the perfect mixture of sweet and salty.  You simply cannot eat just one of these delicious treats.

— TRUFFLES:  Stick one on your tongue and let it melt.  The chocolate ganache in the middle is like finding the prize in a Cracker Jack box.   This is a Food Adventure in a bite.

Coffee lovers love Winans

— MINT JEWELS:  Rich, creamy and oh so dreamy.  White chocolate and the texture of the top from the nonpareils makes this a must eat.  More addicting than Candy Crush.

Slobbering yet?  Then turn the tables on the kids and have yourself a little Halloween Food Adventure at Winans fine Chocolates.  Just don’t wear a creepy costume and demand free candy, we wouldn’t want the Mall Police to get involved….

Xenia To Host Restaurant Week

October 28, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

FebNew2013_oval Xenia will have its first Restaurant Week November 3-9, 2013, with nine local eateries participating. The all-volunteer community organization Xenia Eats! created the event for Xenia, basing it on the popular trend of restaurant weeks in cities across the county.  Each participating eatery will offer a special menu selection for a “2013” price. No reservations or advanced purchase is required. The public is welcomed to just show up, order the specials, and support Xenia’s local dining scene. The menu of participating eateries can be found on its Facebook page.

Scott Calhoun, of Xenia Eats!, said restaurant weeks are fun ways to support local eateries and try something new. “Some places are offering great dinner combos for two people for $20.13, while others, such as bakeries, are offering one item for $2.13. There’s even a local winery involved. I’m thrilled that so many local eateries want to be a part of this.”

Building community spirit by eating out with friends is one goal of restaurant week, Calhoun said. Promoting growth is another. “Xenia’s dining scene may be small at the moment, but the eateries are proud of what they do and they have a loyal following. Supporting what we have is a great way to encourage others to open up a restaurant in Xenia. It can show them we care and will eat local.”

Xenia’s City Manager Jim Percival said, “We often hear complaints that there are ‘no places to eat’ in Xenia, from both citizens and employees.  The Xenia Eats! group is helping us be aware that there are good eateries in Xenia. We just need to be reminded about them and urge Xenia citizens (and others) to dine within our city limits!” If you haven’t tried a Xenia eatery lately, be sure to take advantage of the new Xenia Eats! sponsored restaurant week.

Xenia Eats! creator Scott Calhoun said,  “We were surprised to learn ourselves that there are about 20 local, independent eateries within Xenia’s borders. We decided to have a local Restaurant Week to promote staying in Xenia when you want to go out to eat.”

“We are delighted about the new 2013 Xenia Eats Restaurant Week,” said Ronda Houston, chairperson of The Business Enhancement Committee of Downtown Xenia Now.  “DXN’s Business Enhancement Committee has as one of its goals increasing dining establishments in Xenia, so residents have more choices than just fast-food chains and the franchises. Xenians like to eat out as much as everyone else in the region, but they usually take their dining dollars outside of Xenia because often they are unaware of the options in the city.”

Xenia Eats! created by Xenia resident Scott Calhoun, seeks to find and celebrate independently owned, Xenia eateries.  “We share Xenia Eats!’s philosophy,” Houston said, “because DXN knows if we grow the restaurants we already have, we will be able to not only have happier, more profitable restaurants in Xenia, we will attract other quality restaurants as a result of the success of the existing ones.”

The Fearsome 15: Top Guilty Food Pleasures in Dayton

October 24, 2013 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Frisch’s Hot Fudge Cake is Sinful

We all have them, we all need them… guilty pleasures.   As we get older, we try to eat healthier, but once in a while, you gotta splurge.  Dayton is a great place to do so.   Sure, there is fear in seeing the calorie count, and scary scale readings the following week… but sometimes you gotta have a ghastly, full blown Food Adventure.

So without further ado, we present present our list of the Top 15 Guilty Food Pleasures of the Dayton Area:

15) THE FOOTLONG CHILI DOG at THE ROOT BEER STANDE: Long and strong, we came to get the friction on.  This wiener is a mouthful of goodness and a ruined shirt waiting to happen.  Eat it in your car, roll up the windows so no one can see,.  But we know… this is one of your guilty pleasures.

14) FRICKER’S RIBS & WINGS DINNER:  This huge meal comes with a half rack of ribs, those famous fried chicken wings, cole slaw, roll and an side.  Finger lickin’ good, and a naughty belt buster for sure.

13) THE PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAE at JET FREEZE:  Homemade peanut butter sauce, ice cream, whip cream, nuts and a cherry on top.  The peanut butter sauce alone is so sinful that it catapults it onto the list.

12) THE BROOKYLYN BRAWLER PIZZA at JOHNNY’S SLICE of NY:  When you serve a giant, stuffed pizza as big as a spare tire, it has to be a guilty pleasure.  Big eaters of the Miami Valley come from far and wide not only to eat this giant creation, but to see if 2 of them can finish it in 30 minutes or less to get on the wall of fame.  Filled with various meats and cheeses, this guilty pleasure is for serious eaters.

11) THE SEAFOOD PLATTER at TREASURE ISLAND: Deep fried scallops, a cod filet, frog legs, fried shrimp and stuffed crab on a plate with 2 sides.  You can taste it all, but don’t test your cholesterol that day.  The over the top moment of this dinner is when they serve you some drawn butter for dipping.  Oh, behave !

10) ALL-YOU-CAN EAT FISH at the HASTY TASTY PANCAKE HOUSE:  For just $7.25, you can literally fill yourself to the gills.  Breaded and crispy, it is one of the best ‘bangs for your buck’ as far as sinful meals go.   The fish is Alaskan pollock, and when you add the sides, rolls and butter slabs, the wheels come off the diet train.

9) BROASTED CHICKEN at GEORGE’S FAMILY RESTAURANT:  Deep fried in a pressure cooker, this stuff is guilty fun for the while family.  Moist inside, the chicken is always cooked to perfection. Get some heavenly comfort food sides and complete this trip to dream street.

North China’s Crispy Shrimp: Rich, Spicy Flavor with a Touch of Sweetness

8) CRISPY SHRIMP at NORTH CHINA:  One of our favorite Chinese restaurants serves us a sweet sauced, deep fried shrimp dish that will knock you on your socks.  The taste, the crunch, the bites of sauce mixed with rice.  Overdone richness?  Guilty as charged.

7) POTATO SKIN CUPS at ANGIE’S FIREHOUSE:  Stuffed with chili, bacon, onions, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, green onions, jalapenos and sour cream they are a beautiful piece of work.  You will find yourself eating an entire plate of these and passing out in a food coma.

6) BISCUITS & GRAVY at TANK’S:  Delicious, artery clogging goodness.  Although this legendary spot on Wayne Avenue has many treasures, we find this to be our most guilty pleasure.

5)  THE HOT FUDGE CAKE at FRISCH’S:  We know, this is semi-local and more of a regional treat, but it deserves a spot on our list.  Hot, steaming fudge, hitting the cool cake and ice cream.  The feeling of the whip cream and hot fudge on your lips is worth every calorie.

4) THE PANZAROTTI at MAMMA DISALVO’S:  This is pretty much a calzone that is the size of a small kid.  Imagine an extra large pizza full of toppings and cheese, that has been folded in half.  Served with dipping sauce, it is like cutting into a turkey to begin eating.  Go all out and dip your forkfuls into marina or ranch.  It is absolutely delicious.

3) THE HOG BURGER at VOLTZY’s:  Voltzy says he named the burger after his ex-wife.  All we know is that this mammoth 20 ounce burger melts in your mouth, and you find yourself saying “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.”

2) CASSANO’S BIG CHEESE PIZZA:  Like Vic Cassano Sr said “It’s one heck of a pizza.”   That famous Cassano’s crust and sauce, loaded with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, olives and finished off with a m0und of cheese.  The proof is in the taste.

The Big Bo BJ Breakfast Sandwich from B&B Carryout

1) THE “BIG BO BJ” at B&B CARRYOUT:  Get your mind out of the gutter, this is a breakfast sandwich.  And it is one helluva guilty pleasure.  This craziness is a bun with sausage, a fried egg, a hash brown patty, American cheese, strips of bacon and hot pepper cheese.  You won’t feel that guilty, because the every bite is just so darn good.  A handful of greasy, gooeyness, with great flavor.  If you haven’t tried the Big Bo BJ, you need to grab yourself one.

Do you feel guilty yet?  Naughty nibbles indeed.  Honorable Mention to : Paragon Supper Club’s Paragon Supreme Dessert- a peanut butter and chocolate ice cream mousse, Marion’s Super Cheese Pizza – delicious, Tank’s Chili Cheese Fries-out of this world, and Submarine House’s Super Duper Cheesesteak– triple the meat and cheese & 16 inches long.

DID WE LEAVE ANY OUT?  WHICH OF YOUR FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURES SHOULD WE HAVE INCLUDED IN OUR LIST??
