Crash At Savona Spurs Reinvention- The Twisted Root Opens Tuesday

419057_10151445077586937_1790137366_nIt was about 4pm on Thursday, March 14th  and the staff at Savona were doing their usual pre-shift prep for dinner service, when a car cash crashing through a wall into the dining room.  Chef/Owner Keith Taylor, who was in the back of the restaurant when the accident occurred, said the impact “sounded like a bomb had gone off. I was startled. I went to the front to assess the situation — it looked like the roof had collapsed.”  A collision with a pickup truck sent the car into the building, and the young female driver was shaken up, but injuries to her were minor.  The same could not be said of Savona.  Building inspectors advised that the structural integrity of the restaurant had been compromised and it would be closed until repairs could be made.

Taylor took advantage of the shut down to re-valuate his business and after 5 years he’s retiring Savona.  When the restaurant reopens on Tues, June 11th at 5pm it will be as The Twisted Root restaurant & bar.  Keith says you’ll see a lot of the popular dishes that made regulars out of many of us at 971736_10200902751587429_960849776_nSavona, but also feels this rebirth will give him a wider range with menu’s.  The addition of the talents of  Chef Pete Zorotovic, formerly of Jimmy G’, Tony’s and the Precinct in Cincinnati alongside Sous Chef James Burton, and Taylor in the kitchen promise some truly scrumptious meals in our future.  Can’t wait to see what exciting things they’ll have on the menu! Taylor did mention there will be a chicken and waffles dish, loaded sweet potato hash and a grilled  shrimp cocktail.   The Twisted Root will be open 5-9pm Tues – Thurs and 5-10pm on Friday and Saturday.  Located at 70 S. Main Street, just south of St. Rt 725, reservations are suggested as the eatery only seats about 90.

Banana Split Festival This Weekend in Wilmington

One of the highlights of the Banana Split Festival is the make-your-own banana split booth. The choices begin once you are in line.

How many dips of ice cream do I want – 1, 2, or the traditional 3 scoops? Should it be chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, or … one of each!? Grab your banana and on to the topping bar for a choice of chocolate, strawberry, pineapple, or caramel topping. And don’t forget the chopped nuts, whipped cream, and cherries on top!

Now dig in – Yum, Yum!!

Games for all ages can be enjoyed at the festival. It’s really a street fair in nature – just good old fashioned fun. Remember the dunking booth and the fish pond? We’ve got it all for your family’s fun. Added to inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo and much more, your children won’t want to leave!

June First Friday MIX 107.7 Food Truck Rally!

MVMFA_logo circletagFirst Friday brings the second ever Dayton Food Truck Rally to downtown!  Last month six trucks lined up at Riverscape and on a dreary day that rained off an on all day, no one was sure what to expect.  The food truck operators weren’t sure whether to cancel due to weather, or show up, but how many to prep for?  What they found was an overwhelming turnout, where guests lined up in the rain by the hundreds!  Lines reached from the streets almost back to the pavilion. The turn out  was huge and for some of the trucks it was more than they had on hand.  What they learned is that Dayton loves street food!

So this First Friday there will be a dozen trucks lined up, more food prepped and Synergy Incubators has been working with the Miami Valley Mobile Food Association to help the truck entrepreneurs to work on efficiency, and quicker customer service!  For many of these local entrepreneurs, they are learning as they go.  And they are not the only ones learning- existing local ordinances, laws and regulations pertaining to food service were written decades ago, long before anyone had ever heard of a food truck. Most cities and counties do not even acknowledge the existence of “food truck” in their code, which poses challenges, permitting delays and lack of consistent information for the modern day food truck warrior.  By forming the formal association (MVMFA) they can work together to help navigate and change the laws that allow these pioneers to bring food to underserved areas of town.  They are also educating the public, mobile food now covers so much more than just a hot dog cart with an umbrella (speaking of which Craig’s Pesto Hot Dogs serves up a yummy Reuben Dog).   A colorful, gleaming, fully equipped food truck can cost upwards of $120,000. Add to that the graphics wrap, menu development, gas, maintenance, insurance, truck storage, permitting fees, biz licenses and suddenly, what some may consider a weekend hobby, is now a full-on investment. These restaurants on wheels are creating a whole new business niche, serving up gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, locally sourced foods and gourmet cupcakes.  Many of them aspire to grow into bricks and mortar eateries .  Being mobile allows them to research locations that work best for their particular food offerings.  Many of the trucks have constantly changing menus.  What they all have in common is they love to serve up food and they thrive on the challenges of each outing.

Tonight’s event with Miami Jacobs College is Mix 107.7’s Pre-Summer Fest Party, featuring a live band, and ticket giveaways to the June 15th Sheryl Crow show at Fraze Pavillion.  The party will begin at 6pm at 110 North Patterson, and is scheduled to run until 10pm or until the food runs out!

China Cottage: A Food Adventure Favorite + *GIFT CERTIFICATE CONTEST*

This week, The Big Ragu & Crew grab a Tiger by the tail.  Your humble Food Adventurers have been dining at China Cottage restaurant since it opened in 1987.   Hairstyles and music have changed since then, but China Cottage’s menu has stood the test of time and remained one of our favorites.  Locally owned by Chef Tiger Wang, this popular eatery has four locations including Wilmington Pike in Kettering, State Route 48 in Centerville, Springboro Pike and Trotwood.

How did this Dayton original get its start?  In the mid-eighties, while working as a cook at Keeng Wha restaurant in Kettering, Tiger realized he wanted to start his own eatery.   A couple of years later, he opened China Cottage, with the help of his brother.  Tiger’s style of cooking is from Southern China and he was the first to feature General Tao’s chicken on a Dayton menu.  Three restaurant expansions later, China Cottage is still one of the most popular destinations in Dayton, to get your Chinese fix.

So after a quarter of a century, what are some of the little known secrets of China Cottage?  The answer is in the Chef’s Specials section of the menu.  These are original  dishes created by chef Tiger Wang, that you will not find anywhere else.

Fire Cracker Shrimp – an original China Cottage appetizer

MUST EATS:

— Fire Cracker Shrimp – Jumbo shrimp sauteed in a spicy sauce that features cilantro, lime juice, scallions, red pepper flakes and herbs.  It is served with 3 toasts for dipping.  Are you kidding?  Order this and thank us online later.  There is no appetizer like this in Dayton.

— Pot Stickers – Giant, deliciously meaty and perfectly seared.  That is pretty much all you need to know about these magnificent creations and the best pot stickers in the area.

— Hot and Sour Soup – The best in Dayton, hands down.  A spicy mixture of pork, tofu and vegetables make this a peppery soup a great way to wake up your taste buds.

— Medallion Scallops – Large, lightly breaded scallops in a slightly spicy brown sauce that will make your mouth water.  Tiger has a masterpiece with this original dish.

— Golden Calamari – Another signature appetizer from Chef Tiger.  Deep fried calamari, tossed in a ginger, chili pepper and scallion sauce that is beyond tasty.

— Rock Salt Prawns – Don’t like a lot of sauce?  Then this dish is for you.  Shrimp tossed is a dusty, pepper and flour mix with scallions.  The result is a smoky tasting, seared shrimp that was charred at high heats in the wok during frying.

Honorable mention menu items include the one-of-a-kind Creamy Chicken soup, the spicy Mala Pork, and the Happy Family combination of meats, vegetables and seafood served on a sizzling plate.  We would also be amiss if we did not mention the unique Sesame Shrimp dish with a very rich, sinful cream sauce.

All of these wonderful dishes are enhanced by great service, not to mention the fancy, contemporary Asian decor.  China Cottage is a great dining experience, and dare we say romantic place to take that special someone.

The Big Ragu is speaking from experience here, as China Cottage has always been a “go to” place for a great Food Adventure.  Take our advice, try something new and exotic.   Steer away from your standard, tired sweet and sour entrees and go for the menu section that says Chef’s Specials.  Here is another secret.  China Cottage maintains their quality because Chef Tiger splits his time each week between the four locations.  His continuous training of employees and supervision ensure that high quality standards are maintained.  If you have never stopped in China Cottage, give it a shot.  If you you visit this establishment frequently, then you know what we are talking about.   Just like the sign says at the Centerville location, this spot is “One of the Best.”   Chef Tiger, you have definitely earned your stripes as a Miami Valley culinary superstar!

The Affligem Pouring Kit or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Being a Sell Out

The Affligem Pouring Kit

If you have a blog long enough, people will hit you up about all kinds of things: events, guest posts, “affordable marketing”, “long term SEO options”, and a whole bunch of other stuff that you will tend to ignore. However, I recently got an email that I didn’t ignore. It was from Affligem, a Belgian brewery that has apparently been making beer for 950 years, though I had never heard of them. They offered to send me one of their pouring kits free-of-charge. Me being the snob that I am, I am skeptical of any brand of beer that I haven’t heard of, much less one that has enough cash to send free stuff to me for my little dog-and-pony articles. But I’m not so snobby that I’d turn down a free Belgian Blond (or Blonde). Heck, most of the Belgian Blondes I’ve encountered charge by the half-hour. So, I decided to be a complete sell-out and write about their pouring kit. Street cred be damned.

Affligem Kit in the MailI opened my package to find a large Belgian chalice, an adorable little glass, a wooden serving tray, and a bottle of their Blond. I ignored the fact that had zero verification to see if I was over 21 and decided to watch the video that explains what all this extra stuff was for. As it turns out, one is supposed to pour 90% of the beer into the big glass, then pour the remaining 10% (which has the yeast) into the little baby glass. The drinker can then decide whether to drink the beer without yeast, mix the yeast into the beer, or drink the yeast by itself. Admittedly, this gimmick is a pretty neat idea. You always hear about how you’re supposed to drink the yeast in some beers and leave it out in others, but why not have the option of both? Plus, it seems like it’s a good way to really understand what kind of flavors the yeast adds to bottle-conditioned beers. Sure, it’s not really practical to drink out of two glasses at the same time but who am I to judge? I’m drinking out of two right now (if you consider a flask and a mason jar to both be glasses, that is).

Affligem Blond is 7% ABV, and is classified as a Belgian Pale Ale. It is produced year round, and the company that produces it is owned by Heineken (which is probably why they have such a big budget and why I’ve never heard of it). And after hearing it pronounced 50 times in that video, I now know that it’s “Ah-Fleh-Ghem”, not “Ah-phlegm” like my brain kept wanting to say.

I did the whole shebang and poured the beer and yeast separately, smelled them both, tasted them both, then combined them. Here is my impression of the whole experience

Affligem BlondBlond (sans yeast)

The Blond poured a clear deep straw color, almost like a Budweiser that is about twice as dark. It was visibly effervescent and had a rather large white head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was pretty typical of a Belgian Blond; it had a lot of banana and clove, as well as some slight citrus and other sweet spice character. The flavor followed the nose pretty closely, with banana and clove being the dominant flavors. There was some cereal flavors that reminded me of corn flakes. The 7% was very well hidden, and the carbonation level was high and left a prickly feeling on the tongue. Overall, it was kind of watered down and sort of average. Tasty, but average.

Yeast

The yeast was quite a bit cloudier than the regular beer for obvious reasons. It smelled almost the same, though it was a bit more muted overall and had some nice bread character that was missing from the base beer. The taste was, as you would expect, pretty much the same though it had a bit more bitterness and less citrus. It had a lingering flavor that hung around in the mouth that reminded me of bread dough. The flavors were somewhat muted compared to the regular Blond.

Affligem Taster GlassBlond/Yeast Mixed

This was pretty surprising – this was quite a bit different than the separated elements. It was similar to the Blond without yeast, though it had a fuller flavor and, oddly enough, a bigger perceived mouthfeel. The strong flavors of the regular Blond were there, and the added bitterness and bread flavors from the yeast added complexity. The mix was by far my favorite version of the Affligem. If you were to try this beer out of the bottle, I would recommend dumping it all in rather than excluding the yeast.

Overall

This was a mildly fun learning experience. The whole thing was pretty cute, but I wouldn’t go bang down the doors of your favorite beer shop to get your hands on the pouring kit. I guess it would be cool for a classy beer bar to have one or two of these on hand. Or, maybe you could whip it out at a tasting to show people what kind of flavors are produced by yeast. Or maybe you could show it off to someone you are trying to get in the sack. Or maybe you got it for free in the mail randomly and write a blog post about it. Whatever the case, I don’t think I’ll use it other than this one time. At the very least, I’ll use the little baby yeast glass more than anything else in the kit. It holds just about enough to get a good taste of something at a bottle share. Plus, look how stinkin’ cute it is. It’s adorable! It’s like a glass for fairies or something.

I don’t want it to sound like I’m sitting here bashing Affligem for this. In fact, I think they are doing a great job with their marketing. Almost everything about what they are doing with this pouring kit is pretty impressive. It’s just a little gimmicky, and frankly kind of faux snooty. But really, I guess my point for this whole thing is that I really love getting free stuff, especially beer. So if anyone wants to send me free beer, for the love of God get ahold of me. I might even write a stupid blog post about it.

Salar Is Now Open

480999_164515687048312_1882105122_nIt’s been a long time since Dayton has gotten this excited about a new business opening, but if the over 500 guests that packed out the VIP Grand Opening Reception for Salar Restaurant and Lounge on Wed  are any indication, this Oregon District Restaurant will be a hit.  Chef/Owner Margot Blondet has created a menu inspired by Mediterranean, Peruvian and French cuisine, the interior has been remodeled  and the cocktails have gone upscale, courtesy of  three star Michelin rated mixologist Brian Van Flandern.

While I usually am the first one to say “never judge a restaurant in the first few weeks“, we celebrated my friend Nicole’s birthday last night at Salar, on the first night they were open to the public.  It always  takes a while for the staff and kitchen  to learn the ebb and flow of the restaurant. Seven of us arrived with anticipation and excitement, and since most of the group have worked in restaurants we agreed not to judge too hard.  Other than a few timing issues, we all were quite impressed with the feast of flavors we shared.

We started with a few appetizers to share:

Shrimp Wonton’s with a spicy peruvian chili pepper and passion fruit dipping sauce
crispy rings of fried calamari,  marinated in smoked paprika served with roasted pepper garlic aioli, Peruvian Empanadas-  beef  tenderloin filled turnovers with a Peruvian kick, Chorizo in Sherry – chorizo onions and red bell peppers served with a sliced baguette and an old favorite I was glad to see on the menu: Seafood Pizza- shrimp, scallops, mozzarella and provolone with fresh basil and baby spinach- or ask my friend Karen said when I posted this picture on Facebook- Seafoodorgasm!

The portions were plentiful and we all decided to move right into entrees, agreeing to each order a different meal and share.  Words can ‘t do the food we enjoyed justice, and these photo’s don’t really convey the beauty on the platings either.  Remember, we were celebrating a birthday and not really there to review Salar, but we wanted to share, because so many people have been asking.

 We also had a Pork Filet Mignon, but for some reason  I don’t have that picture.  The Cabernet Sauvignon reduction served with the Duck Ravioli and the Chardonnay and Saffron sauce that was served with the Salmon were so good, we asked our waiter to bring us bread so we could dip and enjoy the sauces, after we’d devoured our meals!  Our server Benjamin was great and very helpful, keeping our waters full and replacing silverware as needed.  Great attention to detail this early on is a great sign of good staff training.

And of course a great meal is not complete without sampling desserts.  We orded each of dessertsthe desserts listed on the menu.  As a group we all agreed our favorite was the Lucuma Croustillant – a pecan pavloca with lucuma mousse topped with chocolate ganace (served in a martini glass).  The Chocolate Shades mousse cake came in second followed closely by the Passion Fuite Tres Leches cake.  We all agreed the Volador was our least favorite, the combination of thin crackly pastry with creamy dulces de leche.  It was just a little dry and might benefit from a cream anglise or fruit sauce, but that was the only miss of the entire meal!

Salar is open Monday – Saturday starting at 5pm. Reservations are most definitely suggested- you can call 203-3999 or reserve online with OpenTable.  For now Salar is just serving dinner, lunch will be added soon. Kudos to Chef Margot, Harry and the staff- you’re off to a great start!

Fleurs Et Vin: A Great Success at Carrillon Park

Did you miss it?  Endless wine tasting and all the food samplings you wanted were featured at the 2013 Fleurs et Vin Festival held at Carillon Park on May 19th.  The Big Ragu was on hand with Dayton Most Metro’s staff, greeting the massive crowds and sample the various offerings.  It was a Food Adventure paradise in the heart of Dayton, and a must eat on our list of events.

Here’s the Skinny:

— FLEURS ET VIN is Dayton’s Premier Wine and Gourmet Food Festival, typically held each year on a Sunday in May from 1-4pm under the tents at Carrillon Historical Park.  It is an all-you-want tasting event with a loyal following.

— ALL of the food and wine was donated by locally owned restaurants, allowing 100% of the proceeds to benefit AIDS Resource Center of Dayton.  A Food Adventure with a cause

— Admission price allowed you access to over 400 wines from around the world and taste menu samples from 20 local restaurants, along with a Belgian Beer Garden area !

— Live and Silent Auction areas allowed even more funds to be raised for this worthy cause that focuses of prevention and education about AIDS, along with service programs that help those in need with HIV/AIDS.

— Live music filled the air and added to the warm ambiance.

With so many good wines and so much good food, below are our picks for the best of the best from this spectacular event!

Crab Rangoon from Thai 9.  Our Favorite Rangoon in Dayton.

OUR FAVORITES  (THE FOOD):

Thai 9’s Crab Rangoon and Chicken with Rice:  In our opinion, the best crab rangoon in the Dayton area were these incredible samples from Thai9.  Stuffed full and deep, and served with a sweet side of Thai sauce, we found ourselves returning to this line often.  The Thai chicken dish was also incredible at this station.  It was a Thai pepper chicken, served in a brown, curry house sauce over a bed of white rice.  We told them we loved it, but our mouths were so full that they couldn’t understand us.

The Dock’s Crab Cakes:  Slowly seared on their portable flat top grill, these were flavorful, hand-packed circles of love.  The sauce that topped the crab cakes was the secret ingredient that kept us coming back for more.  The staff of The Dock probably wanted to file a restraining order against us for hanging out by their grill as much as we did.  We could not resist seconds of these scrumptious bites of crab heaven.

Hawthorn Grill’s  Sorbet and Strawberry ShortCake: All of the desserts at Hawthorn Grill are homemade by Chef Candace and her staff.   Her sorbet was a perfect, refreshing break during this hot event.  The bite size piece of cake, topped with a strawberry sauce also hit the spot.

Scratch Catering’s Beef Brisket and Carmelized Onion Bruschetta:  When doesn’t Chef Matt Hayden please the hungry crowds?  This delicious, slow-cooked sampling was just as pleasing to the eye, as it was to our taste buds.  The hits from Scratch Catering just keep on coming ….

OUR FAVORITES (THE WINES):

Canella Blood Orange Mimosa:  Talk about refreshing!   This tasty, bottled mimosa was the perfect drink, on this hot day.  The server at this booth had to be tired of us by the end of the event.   Probably our favorite offering from the Vintage Wine Distributor.  This Italian wine cocktail is made from grape wine and the juice and pulp of blood oranges from Sicily.

Heron Chardonnay:  A crisp, white wine made from 22 year old grape vines.  The winery is a female owned, family vineyard run by Laely Heron.   One of the few American women who made wine in France, Heron’s products are also produced in California.

Spreitzer Riesling 101:  This German Riesling comes from a winery owned by two brothers who have been honing their craft since 1997.  It was a cold, refreshing sip of sparkling goodness in the warm weather.

The Belgian Beer Garden: Although this was a wine festival, Heidelberg Distributing distracted us with some great beer selections.  Food Adventures enjoyed a couple of  Stella Artois beers in a souvenir pint.  The Big Ragu went for some Hoegaarden beer and an Ommegang Witte Beer.

All in all, this is Dayton’s “Wine me and dine me” Festival.  We loved being a part of a wonderful event, that supported a locally based AIDS charity.  Good local food and world class wines, what more could one ask for?   So let us end this Food Adventure, by raising our glass with a toast.. “Whether you love Merlot or Chardonnay, here’s to seeing you at Fleurs et Vin, next May!!”

Dewey’s Pizza School To Benefit A Special Wish Foundation

For only $25, with 100% of the proceeds going to ASSW, participants go behind the glass where the pizza professionals teach the art of pizza dough tossing and once a “perfect” crust is achieved the pizza is loaded with the sauces and toppings of the participant’s choice. All pizzas are served buffet style along with Dewey’s amazing salads. Soda and iced tea is also included. Beer is available for an additional cost. The 2013 Dewey’s Pizza School will help grant the wish of 4 year old Jacob who is battling leukemia. Jacob’s very Special Wish is to go to Walt Disney World and meet Mickey Mouse. West Carrollton Farmers Market Debuts Tues, May 28th

FM sign webA ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, to kick off the city of West Carrollton’s first Farmers Market located at 833 E. Central Ave.The market will begin on May 28 and continue through October 22 – open each Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. Eight vendors are signed up to participate during the season. Some vendors will begin later in the summer when their produce is ripe.Those eight vendors include:
Blairquist Speciality Meats (dairy shares, meat) of Hollansburg;
Bubbles, Bows & More (handmade detergents, soaps) of Moraine;
El Meson Restaurant (fruits, vegetables, herbs, baked goods) of West Carrollton;
Karolyn’s Gardens (fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies, soaps) of Springboro;
Silva Scensations (soaps, shower gels, foot cream, body cream) of Centerville;
Spring Valley Farm (fruits & vegetables)of New Madison;
Tom’s Garden (hot sauces & mustard) of Xenia;
Downing Fruit Farm (fruits & vegetables) of New Madison.
Additional vendors will be accepted as the season progresses. However, prior to participation, vendors are required to file an application permit, as well as pay a fee of $175 per 22-week season or $20 per week. The market will be held on a vacant lot, formerly a McDonald’s restaurant site, which is owned by the city. “This seemed like the ideal location because it’s easily accessible and has right the combination of green space and pavement for parking,” said Brad Townsend, city manager.

According to statistics from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission, about 13,000 vehicles pass the site each day.  “With our newly improved interstate access at Exit 47, we are excited to be able to showcase our community as well as provide fresh fruits and vegetables to our residents and visitors,” Townsend said.

Walk/Run Through the Vineyards… with your family!

This is very exciting! Join us for this annual event when our vineyards will be open to the public for charity. Grandpa will be leading the trek through the vineyards, guiding us along…he’ll be motorized of course! Stroll through the rolling hills and grassy meadows, or run along the marked path and sweat for a good cause! At-the-door registration beings at 9:00 a.m. and the walk/run starts promptly at 10:00 a.m. The funds collected from registration go to support The Hamilton Township Police Department’s ‘Shop with a Cop’ Program and all their good work. There will be several areas where staff will be set up with bottled water, and available to answer questions you may have about the vineyards.

PubFest 2013 + Ticket Contest

183676_10152845000755397_317810763_nThe Pub at The Greene is hosting PubFest 2013,  a tasting extravaganza on Sunday, June 2nd from noon to 4pm.  Advance tickets  run $35 and will include a chance to sample over 30 craft beers from across the country, enjoy selections fromt the food buffet that have been specifically selected to pair with the regional beers. Tickets on the day of the event will run $40.

Not a beer fan?  Wine tastings will also be available, as well as cigars from The Wharf.  Brew Master Steve Shaw from the new Morrow Brewery Cellar Dweller will be on hand to introduce new brews and answer questions as well.  And what’s a party without live music?  Dayton’s own Skilless Villains will be playing from 1-4pm.

Recap: Big Brews & Blues.. and FOOD !

Big Brews & Blues – one terrific event

Drinking craft beers while listening to a regional blues man hum away on his harmonica.  What better way to raise money for  Diabetes Dayton?   The annual Big Brews & Blues event was held last weekend at Carrillon Park and hundreds of attendees enjoyed dozens of craft beers.  There were Big Brews, there were Blues, and of course, there was food.   We were on hand for another Food Adventure supporting a local charity.   Pouring beer in full force were the staff of  Dayton Most Metro and Lisa Grigsby with Dayton Dining.  Tickets were $30 in advance or $35 at the door.  The event went from 5pm – 9pm and each guest received a souvenir beer tasting glass.  Full pint tickets were also available for a special price.

The crowd danced and drank.   They ate and socialized.  They sipped and quipped.    So which brews were our favorites?  What food items blues.. (ahem) blew us away?  All that is coming, but first a summary.

 

If you didn’t attend Big Brews & Blues…

HERE IS WHAT YOU MISSED:

—Endless samplings of almost 50 craft beers from local and national breweries.  A detailed list of the beers may be found HERE.

—Blues acts with roots from Chicago, Tennessee, Detroit, Cincinnati and Columbus.  It was an incredible night of good blues music.  Groups included Joe and Jack Waters, Them Bones, Johnny Mack & the Heavyweights, and finally Big Joe Blues.

—Food Vendors.  This is our thing, so we enjoyed the likes of Brock Masterson Catering, Hickory River Smokehouse, Fressa Food Truck and Kaimelsky’s Food Cart.

— Breweries Represented:

What goes better with beer than a Nathan’s hot Dog from Kaimelsky’s Food Cart?

There were so many good beers and decent food, that we were pressed to pick just one favorite, but here we go…

OUR FAVORITES FROM THE FESTIVAL:

HUNGRY JAX’s FAVORITE BIG BREW:   The Sam Adam’s Honey Queen Braggot was her top pick.  It is made with 3 types of honey, and had a nice hoppy flavor.   They tapped the keg right in front of her, and she was in heaven.  It was one of those “Damn, this is good!” moments.

HUNGRY JAX’S FAVORITE FOOD OFFERING: What goes better with beer than a Nathan’s hot dog from Kaimelsky’s Food Cart?  This hot dog was topped with spicy mustard, onions and Sriracha sauce.   It was worth it.

THE BIG RAGU’s FAVORITE BIG BREW:  Whippet Wheat from Thirsty Dog Brewery gets his vote for its crisp taste with touch of banana flavor.  It was the first time we had a Thirsty Dog beer on tap since the mid 1990’s.  It was like a flashback, so we put on some MC Hammer pants and danced in the tent until security showed up.

THE BIG RAGU’s FAVORITE FOOD OFFERING:  Hickory River’s Pulled Pork Sandwich is Ragu’s pick.  The slow cooked pork was great, but the real secret was the incredible BBQ sauce.  Choices of topping were Sweet, Hot or Mixed sauce on your sandwich.  We chose mixed, and that made all the difference.

This was a fun filled night.  We poured a few beers for MostMetro.  We had delicious crab cakes from Brock Masterson’s catering, and some tasty buffalo chips with blue cheese dip from Fressa Food Truck.   We talked at length with the owners and managers of  Star City Brewery, which will be opening in the former Peerless Mill site before the end of 2013.   Event photographer Sarah Browning, also chatted with us, while snapping  a few pics of  The Big Ragu.

We even had an ‘America’s Got Talent’ moment, when we were getting our groove on near the stage with the blues band.  We even snapped a photo of the lead singer during one of the blues sets.   You won’t see that anywhere else,  unless they copy our soulful dance moves.

Here’s to not having to hear about hiking and heartburn anymore ! Brews & Blues is a blast

The best part of this event is that it benefits Diabetes Dayton each year.  Proceeds from the Big Brews & Blues help uninsured local residents with diabetes.  Funds pay for desperately needed supplies.  Diabetes Dayton also educates people in the Miami Valley who are suffering from diabetes, as well as paying for summer camp for diabetic children who just want to lead a normal, active life.  Thank you to Diabetes Dayton Executive Director Susan McGovern for welcoming us as special guests to this benefit.  Canned Soft Drinks and  Bottled Water were for sale benefiting the Dougie Apple Tree Memorial Scholarship Fund.   Dougie was a local resident, who passed away from diabetes at just 26 years old.

Local Cakeshop To Appear on Cupcake Wars

970422_495379397194474_777159743_n-13eff68_f6c3291c5aad8a884805431a828c4c05.png_srz_176_190_75_22_0.50_1.20_0This Sunday Night at  8pm the Food Network’s Cupckae Wars will air an episode featuring Germantown baker Amy Barkalow and her mother,  competing for the chance to have their cupcakes center court at a huge fan event for the Harlem Globetrotters.  In season eight of the popular show, AmyCake & Cookies is up against New Jersey’s Simply Sweet Cupcakes and Simply Cake form California.

While Amy  can’t tell us what happens on the show, we do know that she’s got a big move coming up in her future.  Amy will be transitioning from being a home baker to a bricks and mortar shop in downtown Miamisburg by the end of June. AmyCakes will open their doors at 80 S. Main, next to A Taste of Wine, and is currently in the process of hiring up to 4 additional employees for the new business.  Amy credits her love of baking to her mom and growing up in a home where the mixer was used more often than the microwave.  She’s even gotten her boyfriend into the business and she claims fondant is his specialty.   AmyCakes specialize in wedding cakes, cupcakes, cakepops, cookies and even do cheesecakes, cookie cakes, buckeye candies and more.  To check our her gallery and get general pricing info, check their website.
972250_497191993679881_740295680_nIf this  sounds familiar Amy and her mom Cheryl are the third local mother/daughter bake team to appear on Cupcake Wars.  Brittany Moore, owner of Moore Desserts Please and her mom have made  their first appearance on the  Food Network cooking show and used that publicity to launch her Oakwood shop.  Alyssa Logan and her mother Julie competed in season five’s Tony Hawk episode and again in season seven’s Cody Simpson episode, then followed it up by opening  up ’83 Sweets in Lucasville.

TASTE OF MIAMISBURG – MAY 17th 5PM-9PM

Are you looking for a fun, family event to attend? If so, the Taste of Miamisburg is what you’re looking for. This event is Friday, May 17 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park in downtown Miamisburg. Bring the family and enjoy food from 16 various food vendors in the downtown area. After dinner, enjoy the music of Weird Science (bring your lawn chairs). The Fit & Fun Bus will have activities for children.
