Corleone’s: A Menu You Can’t Refuse

March 28, 2014 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Manicotti Dinner at Corleone’s is a “Must Eat” (click to enlarge)

“Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. ” – Don Corleone “The Godfather”

Well,  The Big Ragu & Crew are here to do a service for you.  Today, we share with you a place you may not know about.  A kitchen that produces some great pizza, pasta and more.  In other words, let the Food Adventure peeps be your consigliere on this one.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Corleone’s has two Locations, one at 725 Lyons Rd. and the original at 966 Patterson Rd.

— Homemade dough everyday.  This ensures not only fresh pizzas, but tasty pasta dinners.

— Amazing Specialty Pizzas.  These are mafia boss of the menu.  Deluxe toppings, and themed pizzas like the Taco Pie, Greek Pie, Steak Pie will make your day.  There are many more unique creations with white or red pizza sauces.

— Calzones and Hoagie Sandwiches are the dark horse on the menu, and will “whack” your tastebuds.

— Unique menu items that only New Yorkers typically see, like Pepperoni Rolls and Sausage Rolls.

Great specialty pizzas like”Buffalo Chicken Pizza” at Corleone’s

— Carryout is available, and they have Delivery Service as well.

MUST EATS:

 — MANICOTTI:  Served piping hot , this meal is liberal on cheese and sauce.  It is absolutely delicious, and it is the Big Ragu’s favorite choice on the menu.

— TACO PIE:  Corleone’s serves a great version of taco pizza.  The fresh lettuce, olives and tomatoes make all the difference.  Send your hitmen in for one of these babies.

— BUFFALO CHICKEN PIZZA:  Tasty, tangy and even a kid pleaser.  Again a good version of a unique pizza spin.

— WINGS:  We were super surprised at how good the breaded wings were.  They are crunchy, crispy and ready for dipping in your favorite sauce.  Best of all, they are cooked all the way through !

— SPINACH CALZONE:  Served with marinara, the key is again in the fresh dough.  Filled with ricotta cheese (like a real calzone should be), it is a flavorful, filling meal.

Honorable Mention:

The Eggplant Hoagie is a good sub, capesh?  Did we mention it is a monster?  So split one with your favorite wiseguy and see what all the fuss is about.

The Wedgie: Want a Food Adventure in a plate?  Try a Wedgie!  No it is not the “grundy” you used to give your classmates.  It is a calzone with no ricotta cheese or tomato sauce.  It is cooked and then topped with lettuce and onions.  Call it an Italian version of the mini-super burrito and fagheddaboutit.

Surprisingly Good Wings at Corleone’s !

One warning, if you have a large group coming to Corleone’s, you definitely want to call ahead so they are properly prepared for your group of friends or paisans.  Also, the wine and beer selections are limited, so beware if you are looking for something special to drink.

Now “youse guys got” some good direction from The Big Ragu on a little known secret.   What’s not a secret is that practically all of the pizzas we have tried, during our numerous visits have been great.  From the top your own, to the seafood pizza, it is up to you to find your own favorite.   All we can do is lead you to the good stuff.   Trust us, it’s the best pizza and pasta spot that you’ve never heard of.   It is definitely a menu you can’t refuse…

Dine and SLASH with Local Filmaker Henrique Couto + ***TICKET CONTEST !!***

February 20, 2014 By Dayton937 9 Comments

Local Film Maker Henrique Couto with a Cheesesteak at Sidelines Bar & Grill

Want 2 free tickets to see a locally made, horror film, called “Haunted House on Sorority Row” ??  Then comment below on this story to be entered into the contest.  One winner will be chosen at random tomorrow at noon.

Now on with the scoop:

Food Adventures first met Henrique Couto at a Chinese Buffet in Centerville.  He was wearing pajama pants.  We saw his ukelele records in stores and heard about his local trivia shows and local concerts. We even wrote a Food Adventure story about him after we tried his homemade ginger ale – SEE HERE.  He is a local celeb, with his trademark hair, mustache and rubber banded beard.  Let’s not forget the glasses and flamboyant shirts for a style all his own.  Did we mention he is a great guy, with a witty sense of humor ?

His other directing credits are as follows:

Marty Jenkins and the Vampire bitches
Faces of Schlock
Bleeding Through
Depression the Movie
Bulldog for Christmas

Meet the Cast and join The Big Ragu for the World Premier this Friday !

Fast forward to 2013, where we attended the World Premier of Couto’s slasher film, “Babysitter Massacre.”  …Of course we bought the DVD !

Now, his scariest film to date “HAUNTED HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW” is having its World Premier this Friday !!

WHAT: Local Horror Movie “HAUNTED HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW” WORLD PREMIER

WHEN: FRIDAY FEB. 21st, 10pm

WHERE:  ENGLEWOOD CINEMA, 320 W. National Rd., Englewood, Ohio

COST: Admission is $8

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER !!!

Henrique Couto is a Dayton native like us.  He has been interest in film making since he was a kid.  In fact, he used to sell DVD’s to fellow classmates out of his trapper keeper at school.  By the age of 16 he was formatting DVD menu catalogs that were going into Blockbuster Stores.  Now you can buy his movies online at Blockbuster.  You can also buy his titles at Hastings, Amazon.com, FYE Stores and even streaming versions on Amazon Prime.  You can also find his films at local Game Swap stores and his personal website Hen.Storeenvy.com   Henrique’s philosophy is make the films locally and sell them nationally.  He gives crowds what they want: slashers, suspense, and thrilling scenes and even nudity.   He gives his movies, descriptive, detailed concepts in the titles.  Why? Because he doesnt advertise with millions, instead he uses thousands of dollars to make and distribute his movies.  And when they are next to a box office blockbuster, he wants his movie to stand out.

Henrique is of Portuguese descent, and is a foodie as well.  His favorite Dayton spot is Siam Pad Thai, which was unfortunately closed due to weather, so we went down the street for a FOOD ADVENTURE to new sports bar SIDELINES on Wilmington Pike in Kettering.

Deep Fried Ribs? AMAZING! Click to enlarge

********* SIDELINES *********

HERE’s THE SKINNY:

— New restaurant at 4090 Wilmington Pike, with fresh recipe twists on sports bar food

— Great service.  The friendly, attentive staff  ensures a great meal.

— Lots of UNIQUE dry rubs and one-of-a-kind sauce choices for you chicken wing lovers

— The prices were decent and didnt “scare” our wallet

MUST EATS:

— DEEP FRIED PORK RIBS:  Oh man, oh damn .. succulent twin bones of baby rack ribs, breaded and deep fried then tossed in your fave sauce.  Are you kidding?  Nothing like it in Dayton.  People who loved BURBANK’s “Fribs” aka “Flying pigs wings” will love these things!  Sinful, yet sultry…. like The Big Ragu

— THE FRESH CUT FRENCH FRIES:  Delicious, and addicting. You have been warned !!  The fresh cut makes all the difference.. slasher !

— GRILLED SHRIMP WRAP:  A healthy choice that wont bust your waistline, yet will give you all that flavor to savor !  A tasty treat for the soul.

Grilled Shrimp Wrap from “Sidelines”: Good Stuff

— PHILLY CHEESESTEAK:  Loaded with peppers and onions, this sandwich is big and would fill  Jason Vorhees’ appetite.

— THE WINGS:  The secret here is the sauces and dry rubs.  May we recommend the “Dry Ranch Rub” or the “Salt & Vinegar Rub.”  As for sauces, our heads roll for the “Kentucky Bourbon” sauce and “Tropical Rum” sauces respectively.

— We hear the burgers are great, unfortunately this wasnt our typical Food Adventure, as we almost always try a restaurant numerous times before posting anything online.  We aren’t one plate Nate’s, one dish Trish or one Trip .. uh Trip’s … As the group Train sings “this is not a drive by..ey ey eye eye.”  Yeah, we dont do fly by articles, you deserve more.  So “cut” us some slack this once …

Sidelines restaurant was a nice surprise in a pinch.  We will definitely be back and may do a follow up “2nd helping” article.  We suggest you try the flavors and menu items you find at any other sports bar in Dayton.  Live it up!

The Bad Juan: A Dayton Legend

December 26, 2013 By Dayton937 5 Comments

The man, the myth the legend ...

Click to enlarge: Mr. Bad Juan

Hey Gringo, looking to tie one on during the holidays?  Then take a sip of a true Food Adventure in a glass.  Oh yes, the legendary Bad Juan margarita served exclusively at Elsa’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantinas around town.  Whether on the rocks or frozen, salt or no-salt, every Daytonian has a “Bad Juan” story about themselves or a friend.  The Food Adventures Crew are no different.  We have had to push stumbling pals into backseats of cars, or help lift some hotties into the back of an SUV after a couple of these drinks.  We have felt the wrath of Juan ourselves, having numb lips and the buzz that suddenly creeps up on you with this devilish drink.

Let’s be candid, Bad Juans are a Dayton icon.  This badass drink even has its own website, badjuan.com.   Here is some more on the man, the myth, the legend.. BAD JUAN !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Since 1981, Bad Juans have been served frozen or on the rocks.  They also come in a few flavor variations, but the original Bad Juan remains the most popular.

Outside the Kettering location

Elsa’s has various locations in Centerville, Kettering and Dayton

— Rumors have swirled about the ingredients.  People have been trying to figure out the recipe for years.  Food Adventures believes they have some inside scoop on the recipe, and although we can’t post it here, we can give you some info.   Our inside source tells us that the Bad Juan is made up of only 3 secret ingredients: Triple Sec, Tequila and Lime Juice.  We cannot tell you the brands used or the amounts.  We can, however, confirm that Mountain Dew is NOT an ingredient, so lets finally put that rumor to bed.

— We believe the secret to the great taste is not only in the ingredients, but in the preparation.  The Bad Juan’s are constantly mixed in those plastic, see-through drink machines you are used to seeing at convenient stores or food counters.  The thorough mixing of ingredients in these machines blend the drink into that perfect drunken mixture.

— Elsa’s does limit the amount of Bad Juans that a customer can consume (usually 2 or 3 depending on your server).  However, urban legends and tall tales have surfaced about people drinking a couple mini pitchers of Bad Juans, or somehow downing a half dozen of them unbeknownst to their waiter or waitress.

— You can even buy them by the bottle in liquor stores from as far away as Covington, Kentucky’s famous Party Source store.  The bottled drink is 21 percent alcohol, or 42 proof.  We believe that the in-house version mixed at the restaurants is a little higher than that.  Heidelberg Distributors stats confirm that Bad Juans hold the all-time distributor record for the fastest selling new product.

Blue Juan !

Blue Juan – Tasty Twist on an Iconic Drink

MUST DRINKS:

— BAD JUAN on THE ROCKS:  Simple, pure and lethal.  This is for the heavy hitters who like to get down to business and gulp ’em down.  They are however served with a tiny straw and a lime wedge for those who like to sip these slowly and savor the experience.

— FROZEN BAD JUAN: The chilled, traditional version of the legend are just as strong as the ones on the rocks.  Served with a lime, it is curiously tasty when the mixture begins to melt.  If you drink these too fast, beware of  ‘brain freeze’  or a condition known as drunky pants.

— STRAWBERRY FROZEN BAD JUAN:  Not big on tequila or margaritas?  This flavored Bad Juan masks the alcohol taste, and is probably our favorite version of the iconic drink.  Give it a try, we bet you like it!  It is also available on the rocks for you purists.

Strawberry margarita

Strawberry Frozen Bad Juan – Delicious !

— BLUE JUAN: This holiday season is a good time to give one of these a try.  You may have a blue Christmas without it.  It has a great taste and is available on the rocks only.

Honorable Mention: The Raspberry Bad Juan, the Watermelon Bad Juan and the calorie conscious “Skinny Juan”

Miami Valley residents have long debated whether Bad Juans are better frozen or on the rocks.  For the most part, guys tend to have them on the rocks, while girls seem to prefer the frozen margaritas.  But we say…. hell, try them all and get a designated driver.

DO YOU HAVE A GOD BAD JUAN STORY??  PLEASE COMMENT BELOW!  Have an opinion on Bad Juan?  Be heard and post it below !

After more than 30 years Elsa’s is still having fun, and this drink is “Still the Juan.”

The Fearsome 15: Top Guilty Food Pleasures in Dayton

October 24, 2013 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Frisch’s Hot Fudge Cake is Sinful

We all have them, we all need them… guilty pleasures.   As we get older, we try to eat healthier, but once in a while, you gotta splurge.  Dayton is a great place to do so.   Sure, there is fear in seeing the calorie count, and scary scale readings the following week… but sometimes you gotta have a ghastly, full blown Food Adventure.

So without further ado, we present present our list of the Top 15 Guilty Food Pleasures of the Dayton Area:

15) THE FOOTLONG CHILI DOG at THE ROOT BEER STANDE: Long and strong, we came to get the friction on.  This wiener is a mouthful of goodness and a ruined shirt waiting to happen.  Eat it in your car, roll up the windows so no one can see,.  But we know… this is one of your guilty pleasures.

14) FRICKER’S RIBS & WINGS DINNER:  This huge meal comes with a half rack of ribs, those famous fried chicken wings, cole slaw, roll and an side.  Finger lickin’ good, and a naughty belt buster for sure.

13) THE PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAE at JET FREEZE:  Homemade peanut butter sauce, ice cream, whip cream, nuts and a cherry on top.  The peanut butter sauce alone is so sinful that it catapults it onto the list.

12) THE BROOKYLYN BRAWLER PIZZA at JOHNNY’S SLICE of NY:  When you serve a giant, stuffed pizza as big as a spare tire, it has to be a guilty pleasure.  Big eaters of the Miami Valley come from far and wide not only to eat this giant creation, but to see if 2 of them can finish it in 30 minutes or less to get on the wall of fame.  Filled with various meats and cheeses, this guilty pleasure is for serious eaters.

11) THE SEAFOOD PLATTER at TREASURE ISLAND: Deep fried scallops, a cod filet, frog legs, fried shrimp and stuffed crab on a plate with 2 sides.  You can taste it all, but don’t test your cholesterol that day.  The over the top moment of this dinner is when they serve you some drawn butter for dipping.  Oh, behave !

10) ALL-YOU-CAN EAT FISH at the HASTY TASTY PANCAKE HOUSE:  For just $7.25, you can literally fill yourself to the gills.  Breaded and crispy, it is one of the best ‘bangs for your buck’ as far as sinful meals go.   The fish is Alaskan pollock, and when you add the sides, rolls and butter slabs, the wheels come off the diet train.

9) BROASTED CHICKEN at GEORGE’S FAMILY RESTAURANT:  Deep fried in a pressure cooker, this stuff is guilty fun for the while family.  Moist inside, the chicken is always cooked to perfection. Get some heavenly comfort food sides and complete this trip to dream street.

North China’s Crispy Shrimp: Rich, Spicy Flavor with a Touch of Sweetness

8) CRISPY SHRIMP at NORTH CHINA:  One of our favorite Chinese restaurants serves us a sweet sauced, deep fried shrimp dish that will knock you on your socks.  The taste, the crunch, the bites of sauce mixed with rice.  Overdone richness?  Guilty as charged.

7) POTATO SKIN CUPS at ANGIE’S FIREHOUSE:  Stuffed with chili, bacon, onions, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, green onions, jalapenos and sour cream they are a beautiful piece of work.  You will find yourself eating an entire plate of these and passing out in a food coma.

6) BISCUITS & GRAVY at TANK’S:  Delicious, artery clogging goodness.  Although this legendary spot on Wayne Avenue has many treasures, we find this to be our most guilty pleasure.

5)  THE HOT FUDGE CAKE at FRISCH’S:  We know, this is semi-local and more of a regional treat, but it deserves a spot on our list.  Hot, steaming fudge, hitting the cool cake and ice cream.  The feeling of the whip cream and hot fudge on your lips is worth every calorie.

4) THE PANZAROTTI at MAMMA DISALVO’S:  This is pretty much a calzone that is the size of a small kid.  Imagine an extra large pizza full of toppings and cheese, that has been folded in half.  Served with dipping sauce, it is like cutting into a turkey to begin eating.  Go all out and dip your forkfuls into marina or ranch.  It is absolutely delicious.

Click to Enlarge: Broasted Chicken from George’s Family Restaurant

3) THE HOG BURGER at VOLTZY’s:  Voltzy says he named the burger after his ex-wife.  All we know is that this mammoth 20 ounce burger melts in your mouth, and you find yourself saying “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.”

2) CASSANO’S BIG CHEESE PIZZA:  Like Vic Cassano Sr said “It’s one heck of a pizza.”   That famous Cassano’s crust and sauce, loaded with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, olives and finished off with a m0und of cheese.  The proof is in the taste.

The Big Bo BJ Breakfast Sandwich from B&B Carryout

1) THE “BIG BO BJ” at B&B CARRYOUT:  Get your mind out of the gutter, this is a breakfast sandwich.  And it is one helluva guilty pleasure.  This craziness is a bun with sausage, a fried egg, a hash brown patty, American cheese, strips of bacon and hot pepper cheese.  You won’t feel that guilty, because the every bite is just so darn good.  A handful of greasy, gooeyness, with great flavor.  If you haven’t tried the Big Bo BJ, you need to grab yourself one.

Do you feel guilty yet?  Naughty nibbles indeed.  Honorable Mention to : Paragon Supper Club’s Paragon Supreme Dessert- a peanut butter and chocolate ice cream mousse, Marion’s Super Cheese Pizza – delicious, Tank’s Chili Cheese Fries-out of this world, and Submarine House’s Super Duper Cheesesteak– triple the meat and cheese & 16 inches long.

DID WE LEAVE ANY OUT?  WHICH OF YOUR FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURES SHOULD WE HAVE INCLUDED IN OUR LIST??

Food Adventures does “Dinner and a Ghost!”

October 21, 2013 By Dayton937 3 Comments

Is Snow Hill Country Club Haunted ? Have dinner and decide yourself

Ever had dinner with a ghost?   Well here is your chance, Ghost Hunters!   Snow Hill Country Club is haunted, and had been serving up “Dinner and a Ghost” nights on Fridays in October for the past 12 years.    In fact, the place is so legendary, that it was featured on an episode of the Biography channel’s “My Ghost Story.”  The country club is located just outside of Wilmington, on State Route 73.  The “Dinner and a Ghost” nights feature food, fear and even an overnight stay.

The Food Adventures Crew have eaten in many scary places, but this was our first “Haunted Food Adventure.”   The food is pretty straight forward.  On our two trips to the country club, buffet items included turkey and ham, while another night they featured ribs and salmon.   The meal is rounded out with salad, a couple of sides and a dessert plate shared by the table, or possibly some cake.

But we weren’t here for the food, we were here for the ghosts.  And Snow Hill delivered….

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— “Dinner and a Ghost” features appetizers in the bar and a buffet style dinner.    The menu has improved since the 1820’s and they wont be serving  rabbit, steamed onions, venison and beef tongue anymore.

One of our dinners featured Ribs and Salmon

— After dinner, the hosts take you on a guided tour complete with historical information, sound recordings of unexplained voices, and even a couple of photos believed to be “supernatural.”  Tour gurus include historian Kathleen Madison and Ghost expert/Paranormal Investigator Shelly Suittor.   Supporting cast includes Ghost Hunters Kat Powell and Alicia Soich.

— After the tour, guests are encouraged to look around for about an hour and explore for themselves.  During this time a few notable unexplained “phenomenon” have been known to occur.

— Attendees may purchase alcohol at a full service bar on the main level.

— There are 6 guest rooms, and groups may make reservations to stay the night for about 100 bucks per room.   Included in the stay is “ghost hunting” all night, if you have the guts to roam the halls late at night.   Even golf may be arranged during good weather.

— Snow Hill Country Club is located in New Vienna, Ohio at 11093 New Vienna Rd (Daytonians know this as State Route 73).  Famous visitors have included Henry Ford, Eleanor Roosevelt, and legendary 1920’s golfer, Walter Hagen.

— Minimum groups for ‘dinner and a ghost’ are 12 people.  Cost of dinner and tour is $45 per person.

Click to enlarge: What you think of the “orb” in this photo. Is it the sign of a spirit ?

MUST SCREAMS:

— Snow Hill was built and owned by the Harris family in 1820.  It was a popular Inn and tavern up through the 1900’s.  One of the oldest running businesses in Ohio, the country club is said to be haunted by spirits of past owners, family members and past guests.

— Many stories abound from the 70’s and 80’s like a man whom believed he hit a pedestrian in the road, but noone was found.   Or records of police and firefighters responding to alarms and seeing unexplained light and movements throughout the house.

— The Food Adventures Crew had a few unexplained happenings during our two tours:

Big Ragu was taking photographs in the dark, damp cellar thought to be a passage for the underground railroad.   In some of the photos, some circular orbs appeared, one very prominently.  We were told that many ghost hunters believe these are tell tale signs of “spirits” in the room.   To be honest, we do not know what to think, other than the orbs were strange and not in photos taken of the same place seconds earlier.  The prominent orb in the photo had a distinct outline and almost looked to have “veins” running through it.  Odd indeed.  Is it a spirit?  You decide.

The Big Ragu was in the storage area of the basement, when the door next to him opened about an inch and then slammed quickly.  He looked around the room at the handful of people near him and they had that “oh crap” look on their face.  Ragu opened the door and saw a dark empty hall with a staircase, there was nobody there.  There was also a moment where the Big Ragu felt something grab his back pocket.  He was unsure if this was a  fan who liked his behind or a ghost.

Elegant, yet Spooky: Stay the night… if you dare

— During our 2nd visit to Snow Hill, one of our fellow guests took a photo of what appears to be an apparition in one of the bedrooms.   Again, unexplained and just plain weird.

— Employees tell stories of glasses shattering, chandeliers swinging violently, and various apparition sightings.

— Recordings of various unexplained voices gave us goosebumps, especially one particular ghost that whispered the word “Becky” as clear as day on the recording.  The voice was creepy like Golem from Lord of the Rings movies, or like someone who ate too much at Golden Corral.

— An 1880’s portrait photo of an man was found in a cupboard, and when locked away, would keep appearing in various open areas of the country club.  One of the tour guests recognized the photo as her ancestor Thomas Wilson, a Civil War vet.   Since being identified, it was found out that he was a former owner of the country club, purchasing it at auction in 1898.  Since being identified, his photo has ceased moving inexplicably.

— A candlemaker tool levitated and slammed to the ground on a couple of occasions in front of various dinner party guests a few years back.   The theory is that the ghost of the original owner, Mrs Harris, might not be keen on a “peasant tool” being allowed in her formal dining room as decor.

With Halloween around the corner, this is the perfect time for “Dinner and a Ghost” at Snow Hill Country Club.  We were skeptical going in, and realized after 2 visits, some things happened that we couldn’t explain.  Were they spirits from lives past?   Look at our photos, listen to the recordings in person.  Is the place haunted?  Did we see “ghosts?”  You decide…. and check it out for yourself,  but we suggest you don’t go alone.

Click to enlarge: On our 2nd trip to Snow Hill a fellow guest took this pic. Is is a ghost?

Who’d You Rather.. FRICKERS or ROOSTERS ?? **$20 Gift Certificates**

September 27, 2013 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Boneless Wings at Fricker’s

Want to win a $20 Gift Certificate for your own Food Adventure to Fricker’s or Rooster’s?  Today these perennial sports bar favorites go beak to beak, feather to feather, cluck to cluck.  Which one do you like better?

You can’t deny local wing kings Fricker’s and Rooster’s have been enjoying success in the Miami Valley for decades.  Rumor has it that the Fricker brothers had a falling out.  As a result, one of the brothers went off on his own and opened Rooster’s restaurant as a result.  The family feud was Dayton’s gain.

So Food Adventure fans – we want to hear from you..  which of these saucy sports dives is your favorite?   Whether you like boneless or bone-in, whether you like breaded or grilled chicken, comment below and let your voice be heard.  Why? Because 2 people will be picked at random to win a $20 gift certificate to Frickers and Roosters respectively!  Oh and we wanna see which place has a more loyal following…

The Food Adventures Crew sound off on their favorites:

Wings at Rooster’s

Hungry Jax’s Take:  Rooster’s has a bigger salad selection, which is important to me.  I also like the fact that they have more pizza offerings and more sub options.  My vote is for: ROOSTERS”

The Big Ragu’s Take: ” To me it is all about the traditional wings and the sauces.   In my opinion Fricker’s runs away with it on those categories alone.  They have better burgers and better boneless wings as well.  My vote goes to: FRICKERS”

We know that both spots have their strengths like WINGS , BONELESS WINGS, and a great venue to watch sporting events, but lets recap our take on the differences between these two:

The Burgers at Fricker’s are surprisingly good

FRICKER’S STRENGTHS:

— Fricker’s offers Ribs.  And guess what, they aren’t bad for a casual sports bar!

— Fricker’s special’s are superior.  They have 40 cent boneless wing specials on Monday nights and 40 cent traditional wings on Tuesdays.   Fricker’s offers a sirloin steak for only $5 on Wednesday nights and $5 chicken chunks on Thursdays.  Also kids eat free everyday.  Saving money is good.

— The Brew City Fries, onion straws and fried zucchini are 3 decent appetizers only found at Fricker’s

— Cheaper beer prices at Fricker’s.  They feature the $2.42 large domestic drafts.  Nothing like a cold one and big screen football.

— The burgers at Fricker’s are bigger.  Quite frankly we think they are better as well.

ROOSTER’S STRENGTHS:

Asian Chicken Salad at Rooster’s

— Rooster’s has “Dumpster Fries” which we think is the best appetizer found on either menu.  Try them for a taste of awesome indulgence.

— Rooster’s has a better selection of Sandwiches.  More choices, more options, especially for those counting calories.

— The salad offerings at Rooster’s are more complete.  For those trying to eat healthy, you will have more options at Rooster’s.

— Rooster’s pizza’s are better.  Again, more options for toppings, etc.  If you haven’t eaten their pizza, you will be pleasantly surprised.

— Rooster’s gets the edge in soups.  Something you may not know is that both places have some incredible chili and pretty good New England Clam Chowder.  We have been eating those as a start to a Food Adventure for years.

Food Adventures with The Big Ragu and Crew gave their opinion -now it is YOUR TURN !  Who’d you rather get it on with: Frickers or Roosters?

Al’s Smokehouse: Ribs at 4am? YES !!! **$20 Gift Certificate Contest**

June 20, 2013 By Dayton937 10 Comments

Ribs that make you say “DAMN!”

You’re tipsy.  You are out late with your friends at the Oregon District or downtown, and you need  some food.  Well, Al’s Smokehouse and Cafe is the word on East Third.   Open until 5am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, it is the perfect spot to satisfy your late night hunger pains.   This little known Dayton secret serves up tasty, soulful selections from Ribs to Burgers at incredibly cheap prices.   Located  at 140 E. Third St, Al’s Smokehouse is also a great place to catch a quick lunch.  A Food Adventure is in order here ANY time.

Owner Al Shamburg learned cooking from his father who was from Treasure Island, Jamaica.   Al honed his culinary and catering skills over the past 20 years, building quite a reputation in Dayton and Springfield for incredible tasting food.  Through the years, this self-made-man worked hard to buy his equipment and finally open his own restaurant.  He has hired a great staff like his sister Stephanie, and head cook Tyrone, who worked in Dominic’s kitchen for 17 years.  The result is a delicious, affordable menu, with consistent quality.

HERE’s THE SKINNY:

Owner Al Shamburg & Head Cook, Tyrone

— Al’s Smokehouse Menu features fantastic BBQ, and delicious soul food like bourbon chicken and collared greens

— Open LATE on weekends til 5am for all you fellow Food Adventurers

— Breakfast served ALL DAY

— Prices so cheap, you won’t believe your eyes

— Friendly servers, veteran cooking staff and a no frills, casual atmosphere

MUST EATS:

— Banana Pudding: We are going to start with a homemade dessert that knocked our socks off.   Deliciously sinful, this is the real deal.  No canned stuff here!  Don’t expect us to share !

— The Smoked Pork Chop – Smoked and drizzled with secret marinades, it is almost like a steak.   The Big Ragu says this is the best pork chop he has ever tasted.

— The Ribs:  They are smoked for 8 hours, they are brushed with a signature bbq sauce.  Meaty and moist, they pack a wallop of flavor and the namesake of this restaurant.  Only problem is, they are so good that sometimes, they sell out!

“The Shamburger” – hand made, fresh patty

— “The Shamburger”: Hand packed and never frozen, the juicy burgers are good deal at 4 bucks.  Want to go full out?  Get the “Cry Baby” which is the Shamburger with a fried egg and cheese.

— Baked Mac n Cheese: Homemade and so good you will flip. Somebody in the kitchen knows what they are doing at Al’s Smokehouse!

— The Wings: Big and juicy, but the secret is in the tangy sauce.  Get the BBQ wings and be ready to lick your fingers.  You can try the other sauces later, like Jamaica Jerk or OMG Hot wings.  On Monday night the 50 cent wing deal is a steal !

— The Shrimp Cheesesteak: A seafood version of the famous sandwich.  Resembling a Shrimp Po’ boy, it is one heck of a sub.  Delicious!

Honorable Mention:  The Pulled Pork Sandwich is a solid choice.  Also,  we like the homemade Greens for an authentic soul food side.  Want to know a secret?  Al’s has a killer Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, and it isn’t even on the menu.  Ask for it by special request.

Food Adventures has found yet another unique spot for good food at reasonable prices .   We are serious eaters. We don’t do a “drive-by” one time visit to a restaurant and then write our articles.  Instead, we visit a place multiple times before it is worthy of a  Food Adventures share on Dayton Most Metro.   Al’s Smokehouse in no exception.  We have eaten almost everything on their menu.   From the Fish and Grits to the Pancakes and Home Fries.  The popular Bourbon Chicken has a honey and spice flavor with hint of Jerk seasoning.  You get a slight touch of Al’s Jamaican roots with this dish.   Al explained to us that his Bourbon Chicken is made with ‘small hen meat.’  He feels they taste superior to regular chickens.

Who else in Dayton makes Fish and Grits???

The story of this restaurant is simply a hard working family, who is putting their heart into this locally owned eatery.  So what are you waiting for?  If you are anywhere near downtown, or want a casual trip to the city for some grub, check out Al’s Smokehouse.  It isn’t fancy, just some tables and chairs.   But the FOOD.. aw the FOOD.. is some great decor, for the stomach!

Want to see more of Food Adventures?  “Like” them HERE on Facebook !

Who wants a $20 Gift Certificate to Al’s Smokehouse?  One lucky fan who comments below will be chosen at random.  Please tell us your comments about Al’s Smokehouse, below!  Let us know why you love Al’s, why you would like to try Al’s, or why you want that gift certificate ???  GOOD LUCK !!

Lucky’s and Wings host Eat to Win Contests this Weekend

March 8, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

joey chestnutWhen you say Extreme Eating Contests, most people envision Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, held each4th of July at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York.  ESPN broadcasts this and Joey Chestnut has captured the title six times, most recently by eating 68 hotdogs, buns and all in 12 minutes.

While Dayton hasn’t gotten quite that extreme, we do have our share of eating contests that exist. There’s the E-I-E-I-O challenge from OinkADoodleMoo:

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZVymAlJ4dU’]

Johnny’s Pizzeria in Centerville offers a Brooklyn Brawler Challenge, has seen a half-dozen two-person teams succeed in polishing off the eight-pound, meat-stuffed pizza within 30 minutes, Voltzy’s has the Bill Clinton Divorce Finale challenge: A 14-pound burger with a half-pound of onions and 20 slices of cheese on a one-pound bun.  Eat it in an hour and Rick Volz pays you a $100, if not you owe $40 for the food.  Quaker Steak & Lube has their Atomic Wing Challenge- eat 6 atomic wings and you’ll get t-shirt and a sticker, but you still have to pay for your wings.  Submarine House has their Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge going on, eat your 16 inch cheesesteak in 16 minutes and it’s free, you’ll get a t-shirt and you’ll qualify for the semi-finals to be held March 24th.

And if you’re in the mood to see how you do at one of these eating challenges there are 2 happening this Saturday:

As part of Wings Sports Bar & Grill‘s 15th birthday celebration they will be hosting the
7 MINUTES IN HELL-HOT WING EATING CONTEST.  For a $20 entry fee the person who eats the most hot wings in 7 minutes will win $100.  Contestants should check in by 7pm for the 8pm contest, all participants must read & sign contest rules. Entry forms are wingslocated at the bar.  The Winner last year, Jared Price, finished off 26 Hot wings in 7 minutes. Give this guy a challenge!
If you’d rather just watch the festivities, and enjoy the band, Shadow Facts will play live and rock the house at 8pm. There will be a 50/50 raffle for the Nick Aycock Benefit going all day. There will also be drink specials, food deals & giveaways all day.
Lucky'sLucky’s Taproom and Eatery has been celebrating their 2nd anniversary all week long with special beer tappings and on Sat they too will host an eating contest. The Death by Dog eat off will be won by the first person to finish 3 pure beef dogs wrapped in cheese, wrapped in bologna breaded and deep fried.  Entry for this contest is $10 and the winner will get their name on a plaque, a t-shirt and a set of dog tags, as well as bragging rights!
Happy eating! And if we missed any eating contests, tell us about them in the comments below, please!

Meet Our Gal, ‘Juicy Lucy,’ at Romer’s Bar & Grill

March 7, 2013 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Romer’s – Much More than Beer-thirty

Food Adventures found another locally owned place, you gotta try.  It is watering hole called Romer’s Bar and Grill, located at 4439 East Franklin Street in Bellbrook, near Wilmington Pike.  When you think of bars, you don’t normally think of homemade food.   That is where Romer’s beats the stereotype, because most things here are homemade.  The atmosphere is hopping and usually loud.  We have been to Romer’s for happy hour drinks, benefit concerts, and Thursday trivia nights.  But, our favorite is visiting during non-peak hours and just having some good food.  During our latest visit, owner Greg Romer came out from the kitchen to tell us he is a Food Adventure fan!  He also explained that many of the dressings, food items and sauces are made in the kitchen from scratch.  Greg grinds the hamburger meat himself and personally shaves thin slices from roasted beef to make their specialty sandwiches.  So which homemade items make us smile?  Here is a breakdown of Romer’s best from your favorite Dayton Foodies.

Romer’s Bar and Grill first made an impact on us at the Chicken Wing Festival at Fraze Pavillion, two years ago.   If you like wings, you gotta try Romer’s.  We would suggest the “Asian Persuasion” wing flavor.   Appropriately named, the sauce is made in-house and delivers a sweet thai pepper taste with a light touch of heat.  The wings here are crunchy and cooked just right.  We also recommend the hot bbq sauce and the dry rub option.  The wings are available breaded, but we prefer them naked… who doesn’t?

Hand Breaded Jalapeno Poppers

We digress into another inappropriate topic when we talk about Turkey Balls.  They are not what you think.  Food Adventurers recognize this interesting name as a homemade appetizer at Romer’s.  We tried these delicious appetizers which are pretty much “Thanksgiving dinner rolled into a ball.”   The turkey balls are made with dressing, mashed potatoes and of course turkey.  The mixture is rolled into a ball the size of a large meatball, and is coated with panko crumbs.  The turkey balls are then pan fried, and covered with a light brown turkey gravy.   As we sliced the turkey balls, steam rose and we fought over the turkey gravy for dipping rights.  These heavy appetizers are perfect for sharing, and are as addicting as Saturday Night Live’s “Schweddie” skit brand name.

Looking for something a little more spicy?  Romer’s  hand breads their own Homemade Jalepeno Poppers.  What other restaurant in the Dayton area does that?  The heavy breading and spicy insides make this a good choice if you are hungry and want to heat things up.  Another fantastic appetizer that is the Big Ragu’s favorite is the Memphis Fried Pickles.  Hand cut into chip like slices, then hand breaded, these pickles are served with a dipping sauce.  They are a very addicting, yet very filling appetizer that you have to try.

The Beef N Cheddar – Slow Roasted Beef, Sliced in-house

There is no doubt of what the specialty is at Romer’s.   It is homemade, slow-roasted, beef sandwiches.  There are three of these special sandwiches, and they are “must eats.”   Chef House is our resident expert on shaved beef , and her favorite is the Beef N Cheddar.    This sandwich is made sliced to order, so it is fresh and delicious.  Romer’s also does it right.  They top it with cheddar cheese sauce.  The experts in Philadelphia do it this way, and so does Romer’s Bar and Grill.   The sandwich is served on Sour Dough bread and is simply magnificent.  The beef is delicate and moist.  The sandwich will fill you up and is a great meal deal at under 8 bucks.  Most get a side of saratoga chips, but we suggest the waffle fries with these sandwiches.  You won’t be disappointed.

Inside a ‘Juicy Lucy’ Burger

Continuing with our favorite things at Romer’s, we dive into the topic of  Burgers.  All the burgers are ground in-house to ensure great taste.  What burger is best?  Sure, you can build your own burger or chicken breast sandwich with toppings, cheese and sauce.  But wouldn’t you rather  step it up to the big leagues?  Then order a burger at Romer’s that will knock your socks off,  the Minnesota Juicy Lucy.  Owner Greg Romer developed this after seeing a similar sandwich on a food show.  The Juicy Lucy is a 1/2 pound burger stuffed with provolone, pepperoni and jalapenos.  The result is a tasty burger that oozes cheese with every bite from inside the burger.  This is a true Food Adventure item for taste and uniqueness, which is what Hungry Jax, Chef House and the Big Ragu are all about.   Make sure you grab a Juicy Lucy.

We do have one tip on what not to grab.  Don’t grab a seat by the door to the smoking patio.  Since Romer’s gets busy, many people come in and out of that door to smoke.   Take advantage of their selection of beers on draught, but don’t sit by the patio door unless you want a wind draft.   Be forewarned the place gets noisy during peak hours.  It is a fun atmosphere, but if you want quiet conversation, hit this place during slow times like early lunch hours.

There are many other good menu items we like at Romer’s that are worth mentioning.  The Reuben is good, how could it not be with the slow roasted touch?  They also have good thin crust pizzas.  They are a popular with kids and a good value at $11 for a large cheese pizza.  Even with our many trips to Romer’s we have not completely tapped the constantly evolving menu.   Currently they are featuring a Lenten menu insert and feature a fish fry on Friday’s with thick, pub style battered fish.  Romer’s Bar and Grill is yet another locally owned  gem, that many people may not have heard about.  Take the time to stop in, and visit the friendly staff like Lanette, who is our favorite server.  Next time you are hungry, tell your friends you want to grab some turkey balls and see your friends Reuben and Juicy Lucy!

Have you been to Romer’s Bar and Grill?  Please comment below on your experiences with their unique menu.

Food Adventures Meets the Gem City Rollergirls

August 25, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Action was Fast and Furious !

Entering the Orbit Fun Center in Huber Heights, chants could be heard on the other side of the ticket booth wall.  Walking into the arena,  The Big Ragu and the Food Adventures Crew thought “what the hell have we gotten into?”  The answer: The Gem City Rollergirls!  Nothing is more “Dayton” than these hometown roller derby divas!  Even though we had arrived early, the roller girls were already stretching out while their competitors, the Youngstown Little Steel, were skating laps warming up.

Sweaty concession stand hot dogs !

We made our way past the droves of fans and said hello to some of our rollergirl friends like “Racey Rocker,” “Outer Spacey,” “Manson’s Maiden” and “Cozza Frenzy.”    We then walked past the crowd to the concession stand.  After all, we are foodies in our forties.  We grabbed a hot dog, some drinks, and a slice of pizza from the friendly Orbit Fun Center staff.  we talked to some hardcore fans and then made our way to the seating area.

The Filling Station on Linden Ave: Gem City Roller Girl’s “Home” Bar

There were fans encircling the entire skating rink.  Some held signs, some cheered on their favorites, others just took it all in.  We even sat next to a bachelor party!  Then, the lights dimmed and introductions began.  We recognized names like “Supersonic,” Flirtini Tease”, “Punky Rooster” and “Demolition Curvy.”  The action began shortly after introductions and we learned this game requires a lot of skill and talent.  The match was full of speed and quick moves.  The match also had it’s share of bumps and bruises.  There were elbows, hip checks, blockers, jammers and the action was fast and furious.  The Big Ragu and Food Adventure Crew had a blast as we watched the Gem City Roller Girls win their hard fought match!  The event benefited “Luv-a-Bulls” which is a Pitbull-Bulldog-Mastiff rescue organization.  What a great way to support a great charity!

After the match,  the local superstars invited us to an after party, so of course we turned it into a full blown Food Adventure!!

Raspberry Walnut Salad at the Filling Station

The Gem City Roller Girls’ “home bar” is The Filling Station on Linden Ave.  This eatery is known for it’s bar, food and game room.  There were some great drink specials at The Filling Station, including $9 buckets of beer.  On the awning outside, we noticed print that read “unforgettable wings.”  We decided to try the Habenero BBQ wings, southwestern egg rolls and a raspberry walnut salad.  The food was great, and the beers were cold!  It was a perfect end to our action-packed evening.  We had a blast pairing our Food Adventures with another Dayton Original, the Gem City Roller Girls.   The Big Ragu is definitely a fan who highly recommends this experience !!

Want to experience Dayton’s own Gem City Roller Girls?  The next match is at the Orbit Fun Center in Huber Heights on September 8th  vs. Heart of Appalachia (Charleston, WV).

Click through the photos below to check out the rollergirls and some great photos from the Filling Station.

BW3 Introduces Breaded Chicken Wings to Dayton Area

May 29, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

NEW ! Breaded Wings at BW3

Hey Food Adventure fans, we have a tip for you!  For a limited time only, in the Dayton area, Buffalo Wild Wings (formerly BW3) has added a breaded wing option to their menu.  Chef House, Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu took a moment to try them, and we think they are great !  They are a cross between KFC’s hots wings, and BW’3 boneless wings.  Curiously, these wings have only one bone, not only the “drums” but the “flappers” too!  This makes for easy eating.

Breaded wings may be ordered in any sauce, or ordered dry with a side to dip.  Any way you fry them up, we think they are pretty good.   According to Buffalo Wild Wing’s Website, the breaded wings will not be a permanent menu item, and are only available in a few select cities.  Try them out for yourself, and let us know what you think.   May we suggest a large draft beer to help tune up your taste buds, or put out that spicy fire on your tongue.  Are you unfamiliar with Buffalo Wild Wing’s sauces?  Food Adventures recommend the Spicy Garlic, Sweet BBQ or Asian Zing sauces as our three favorites.

If you have tried the breaded wings option at BW3, please comment below and tell us your opinion.
