HERE’S THE SKINNY ON “THE HOLY CANNOLI”:

— What is a Holy Cannoli?  It is a cannoli shell filled with ricotta cheese and cream, sometimes garnished with chocolate chips, that is dipped in breading and deep fried on the spot.  The result after a few minutes is a gooey, gorgeous, piece of heaven.

— Long time Sons of Italy member, Kevin Sorice actually came up with the idea of a deep fried cannoli.  So let’s give credit where credit is due.

Mark’s daughter, Caitlin Preparing Cannoli

Who’s Your Boo? Boosalis Baking & Cafe !

June 23, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Matt Boosalis, the friendly owner

Where is it? What’s the name again?  It is Boosalis Baking and Cafe and it is in the shops of Cross Pointe Center in Centerville.  If you go there once, you won’t forget this place.  We have been spreading the word for weeks now about this cafe.  Not only do they have delicious, sophisticated baked goods, but their sandwich menu is excellent as well.  It is the perfect place for a Food Adventure.

We were first introduced to the friendly owners of  Boosalis Bakery  at the “Night Market” at 700 East 4th St. at the old “Yellow Cab Building.”   They were selling delicious breads and gave us a great “end of the night deal.”  The breads were delicious and we never forgot them.

The Cranberry Turkey – the best turkey sandwich ever

Then as fate would have it, our new friend and American Idol star, Alexis Gomez asked us to meet her there for lunch… and the rest is a love story.  Boy meets croissant, and girls meet pastries.  Alexis was right, this place is unbelievable.

So let’s get the scoop on this little-known spot for scones and more…

The Pecan Roll

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— This bakery opened 8 years ago, but has been at 175 E Alex Bell Rd #280, in Cross Pointe Center since August 2014.

— Boosalis Baking & Cafe is open Tues – Fri 7am – 4pm and Sat. 8am-5pm

— Owner Matt Boosalis gets up at 3am each day to prepare the bakery’s old world menu.  He is very knowledgeable and constantly taking new classes and traveling to learn European pastry techniques.

The Kouign Amann Pastry – you dont know what youre missing

— The bakery prides itself on doing things the traditional way, from scratch. They are a throwback to the times of local neighborhood bakeries around the corner, using family recipes and time-honored baking traditions.

— The only fat they use in their recipes is from butter.

It is obvious that the people in this organization know what they are doing.  The clean atmosphere, is a welcoming invite to the

The Cross Pointe Chicken Panini – (tip: we substitute Turkey instead)

fantastic food.  But which foods are the best?

Food Adventures has the list in our “MUST EATS” for Boosalis Bakery ….

We have put in our research over the many trips to this Cross Pointe eatery, and here are the results:

MUST EATS:

— THE CRANBERRY TURKEY SANDWICH:  The Big Ragu will go on record saying this is the best turkey sandwich in town.  The

Strorefront in Cross Pointe Center off Alex Bell

bread makes all the difference.  Sliced turkey, piled high with lettuce and mayo.  Simple, yet remarkable.  The home made cranberry bread make the sandwich taste like a fluffy dream.

— THE KOUIGN AMANN PASTRY: You are going to start hearing about these “up and coming” trendy pastries soon.  Pronounced “Queen amann,” they are  a buttery croissant served like a cupcake.  Popularized in Breton, France, these delicate morsels pack a buttery, flavorful punch.  These pastries are one of the best things we have ever tasted.

Incredible Croissants and Cinnamon Rolls

— THE CROSS POINTE CHICKEN PANINI:  Warm, cheesy, toasted goodness with turkey, mozarella, and red peppers with a zip of pesto mayo.   At $6.95 it is a great deal and a very filling portion.  We found ourselves very quiet, as everyone ate this sandwich.  It is the kind of panini that you take a bite and it is so good you close your eyes. ** Here is a secret tip, substitute TURKEY for chicken, we think it is better .. just sayin…

— THE CROISSANTS: We could eat 6 of these huge croissants.

Food Adventure Lunch with American Idol Star Alexis Gomez and her family !

Very French, very old school, they remind us of the croissants we have eaten in Toronto,  Canada.  Curiously buttery tasting and delicious, these are definitely a nod to traditional croissants.

— ARTISIAN BREADS: We loved the French Bread and the Ciabatta most.  Amazing what a slice with a little butter and 10 seconds in the microwave can do to your tastebud’s world.  Great stuff, great prices and made from scratch.

We wish they all could be California … salads ….

— THE CALIFORNIA SALAD:  Healthy does of greens with madarin oranges and cranberries.  A truly unique and refeshing salad if there ever was one.  the balsamic vinegarette dresing is the perfect topping and the feta cheese is the perfect finish.  California here we come !

— PECAN ROLL:  Owner Matt Boosalis says these are best fresh, but we found a couple days later, 10 seconds in the microwave

Some of the best breads in the biz

and they taste fresh again.  At any rate, they probably wont last a couple days, they are that good.  A sticky, nutty taste that is finger licking material.

— THE TUSCANY PANINI:  It starts with homemade French bread.  Then they add Salami, Ham, Mozzarella, Roasted Red peppers and Basil Mayo.  Served toasted as a gooey, specialty panini.  Are you

The Tuscan is full of meat for you carnivores

kidding me?  A huge sandwich for around 7 bucks.  Get your butt to Boosalis Baking & Cafe, you wont regret experiences like these.

All in all, we were very impressed with Boosalis Bakery.  The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is a small deli, with limited seating.  Still it is a fun, cozy place.  Most importantly the food is this incredible homemade menu and the prices are right.  We hope to see more people discover them like we did.  We know we will be back again and again,

Who is your boo? Boosalis of course !

and you will too !  This is what Food Adventures is about at its core.  Finding little known gems, and exposing them to the masses.

Look for our feature articles right here, every week, on Dayton Most Metro.  Food info you can take as legit, because we are so thorough.

For daily food updates, visit our incredibly popular Facebook page here where 7,000 foodies follow Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax each day.

Just anothr rock start lunch at Boosalis !

The Dayton Women of Bocce Ball

June 17, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

If strength is in numbers, then bocce ball is alive and well in Dayton, Ohio.  You may remember we did a story on the Sons of Italy, Bella Villa Hall’s men’s bocce league.

Well move over fellas, it is the ladies’ turn!  Thursday’s in the summer, the bocce courts are ruled by the women.

Now, let’s get rollin’….

Family Fun: Eldora & her grandson enjoy a bocce match

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THE WOMEN OF DAYTON BOCCE BALL:

— You have to be a member of the Italian club, John Pirelli Lodge (click here to join) to be in the leagues.  That means you or your spouse must have some type of Italian lineage in your genealogy.  Sometimes the courses are open to the public like the July 15th Bocce Bash and Bocce Classic Weekend

— The Women’s bocce League plays Thursday nights, during the summer.

Helen Longo (middle) and her longtime bocce teammates

— The league started in 1979, with 2 dirt courts.  Now they are turf and much easier to maintain.

— TRIVIA: The turf on the bocce courts was donated from University of Dayton’s, Welcome Stadium

— Currently, they have about 12 womens bocce teams with 4 players on each team.  There are about 50 – 60 lady players in the Dayton area.

— Players range from 17 years old to 80 years young

Mary D’Amico pointing out the closest ball

— A year end banquet, each year is planned to pass out awards.  Food Adventures is sure some incredible Italian food is served.

Melody Sorice Knostman (right) with a bocce buddy

As we watched the matches and talked with the ladies, there were lots of cheers and jeers going on at different courses.  One thing was for sure, these people were having fun.  Some wore fun hats, while others had family members cheering them on.  Sometimes there are snacks and at special events there are food and beer booths.  We met some great Daytonians and we want to share them with you.  So here are some of the Dayton Women of Bocce Ball !

THE WOMEN OF DAYTON BOCCE BALL:

— ELDORA PERFILIO: She says she is out here to compete, but doesn’t take it as serious as some.  Eldora says she comes for the fun times and friendly people in the league.

Maria Napier (left) measures the distance to confirm a winning point

— MELODY SORICE-KNOSTMAN:  Melody has been playing bocce ball in the back yard, since she was a kid.  Her favorite part of the bocce legue is getting to spend time with the ladies. There were definitely a lot of laughs on Melody’s court as they were having a great time.

— MARY D’AMICO:  She is a tiny little spitfire and has been playing bocce ball for decades.  After hearing some of the women talk, she chimed in “They like to win you know, don’t let them fool you!”  Mary was quick to point out some rules on her court, and seemed to be incredibly

Thursday night fun at Bella Villa Hall

knowledgable about the bocce sport.

— HELEN LONGO: For 36 years Helen has been playing ball in the bocce leagues.  She was one of the first founding members.  She shared the long history of women’s bocce at the club with us.  It has been going on so long innher opinion because it is “just a lot of fun.”

— MARIA NAPIER:  Maria agrees that it is all about having fun.  She has been playing for 2 years, and says it is a great time.  She also enjoyed a cold adult beverage on the hot summer evening.

Julia Hall shows perfect bocce form

— JULIA HALL:   For the past 10 years Julia has been a part of the leagues and again points to the good times.  She enjoys meeting new friends of all ages.  “There are a lot of nice people here.”

The photo definition of “chillin” in the dictionary

That seems to be the theme.  Fun times, good friends and anyone can play bocce ball. Any age, man or woman can adapt fairly easily.  Whether you are a beginner or playing for years, you can still compete with anyone and have fun.

Bocce is a simple game to learn, it is a cross between shufflebord and bowling.  The rules are simple.  you first roll a little yellow ball called a “pallino” to the far end of the court.  You then try to get your bocce balls closest to the small yellow ball as possible, while your opponents do the same.  Whoever is closest to the “pallino” earns points and thats how you win the game.  Typically you play until someone has 21 points.  It is easy to get the hang of it and you will be addicted in no time.

Juggling the bocce balls

If you would like to play bocce ball, there are 2 fun events coming up that are open to the public.

  1. THE BOCCE BASH is for Beginners.  It will be played Friday, July 15th during the  Sons of Italy Food Truck Rally. Teams of 4 can sign up to comepeter for a $200 grand prize.  The Signup sheet is HERE.  You do not have to be a member of the club to play in this event.
  2. THE BOCCE CLASSIC: Want to play in one of Dayton’s biggest bocce tournaments?  CLICK HERE

For the 2 events above, there will be food vendors and beer trucks, and even some live music!  Just want to observe?  Admission is free to come and watch.  Eats and drinks are available for purchase by anyone.  Take the weekend of July 15th-17th to play some bocce, have a few beverages, and taste some of Dayton’s best food.

You may even see the Food Adventures Crew at the Food Truck Rally and Garlic Fest the same weekend.

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON CORNHOLE:

— It is essentially a bean bag toss towards a board, 33 feet away

— You get 4 bean bag tosses each turn

— Object is to accumulate points by throwng your bag into the hole, or landing it on the board

— The strategy is to also keep your opponent from scoring points

— The first team to score 21 points, wins

The following is a list of terms commonly used in cornhole.  (For the record, we at Food Adventures have been using words like “Dirty Rollup” and “Slippery Granny” for years under different circumstances).

  • Ace or cow pie: A bag landing on the board, worth one point.

    Throwing the bags

  • Back door or Dirty Rollup: A cornhole bag that rolls over the top of a blocker and into the hole.
  • Backstop: A bag that lands past the hole but remains on the board creating a backboard for a slider to knock into without going off the board.
  • Have you ever thrown a “Slippery Granny?”

Blocker: A bag that lands in front of the hole, blocking the hole.

  • Cornfusion: When players or teams cannot agree on the scoring
  • Cornhole: A bag that falls in the hole, which is worth three points.
  • Cornucopia: A player possessing a wide variety of skills
  • Dirty bag: A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.
  • Flop: Type of toss without rotation or spin.

    Full House

  • Grasshopper: A bag that bounces off the grass or ground and lands on the board for a point.
  • Screaming Eagle: A bag that flys beyond the board without hitting the board.
  • Slippery Granny: Scoring three bags in a row on the board only.
  • Gusher, double deuce, Cornholio, or Four Bagger: Four cornholes by a single player in a single round.
  • Hanger: A bag on the lip of the hole ready to drop.
  • Hooker: A bag hitting the board and hooking or curving around into the hole.
  • Jumper: A bag that strikes another bag on the board causing it to bounce up into the hole.
  • Leprechaun or Clover: When a player attains all four bags onto the board without getting any into the hole.
  • Po-lice: The cornhole referee

    It’s a family affair

  • Sally or Shortbag: A weak toss that and lands on the ground before reaching the board.
  • Shucker: When a player throws a bag and it knocks an opponent’s bag off the board.
  • Skunk, whitewash or shutout: A game that ends in an 11–0 score.
  • Slider or a White Castle: A cornhole bag that slides into the hole.
  • Swish: A bag that goes directly in the hole without touching the board.

Elvis Tribute band will be performing

  • Shotgun: Throwing all your bags at once.

This isn’t just a great day for Cornhole. It is a great opportunity for a Food Adventure.  And that’s what we will be there for.. Food and live music…

Food Adventure with American Idol Star, Alexis Gomez

May 27, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Alexis Gomez is a Food Adventures Fan !

Good things happen to good people. So is the case with local musician and national American Idol Star, Alexis Gomez.  Hard work and success has paid off for this fun natured, family loving young woman.  She is one of the nicest, down to earth people you could meet.  It isn’t every day that you get to go on a Food Adventure with a music star!

You may remember when she first stole America’s heart with her memorable TV debut, the audition scene where she “made it to hollywood”  HERE IS THE VIDEO.

Alexis took time out of her busy schedule to have lunch with us at one of her favorite spots, Boosalis Bakery in Crosse Pointe Center, Centerville.  Recently, she has been traveling to Nashville and Dayton to write and record music.  Alexis is also gearing up for a slew of concerts this summer ranging from Dayton area venues to the House of Blues, Cleveland!  Food Adventures sat down with Alexis, her mom and sister and of course we wanted to talk .. FOOD

But before we dive into that, let’s get to know one of Dayton’s upcoming stars and 2015 Amercian Idol Finalist..

Hand Tossed Cheese Pizza from Flying Pizza is a favorite

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON ALEXIS GOMEZ:

— She is a Dayton native who has been playing music and singing with her family her whole life.  She has many photos on her Instagram of early years playing shows, or rehearsing with her family.

— Very involved in her church, Alexis and her family believe in giving back to the community.  She has a strong spiritual upbringing, that has made her humble and well grounded, with a refreshing appreciation for life.

Food Adventure at Boosalis Baking & Cafe

— Alexis is definitely a foodie, and told us of her American Idol visits to some cities where she got to sample the area foods.  But many times, the contestants were served a strict diet, some of which included limited selections.   She laughed, telling us she doesn’t like mushrooms for breakfast.  But sometimes that was all they had to offer, so she was grateful when traveling and getting some “outside food.”

— How do you get her music?  EASY! Go to her ITUNES Page Here or her website AlexisGomezMusic.com

 — What’s next for Alexis? Look for more music from her and a busy 2016 tour scene, all over Ohio with a stop in Nashville and even the country of Poland.

From Dreams to Dreems & back again!

The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House, talked food and took some yummy advice from this talented young lady…

Being in the top group for the 2015 American Idol, we thought it would be great for Alexis to tell us about her top 10 favorite places to eat in the Miami Valley, bar none ! SO without further delay…. here are her picks!

ALEXIS GOMEZ’ TOP 8 DAYTON FOOD PLACES:

1) DON PABLOS – Yes, we know it is a chain, but her Mexican roots call out to her current obsession – Don Pablo’s Prairie Fire Bean Dip.  There is a location near the Fairfield Commons Mall.

2) FLYING PIZZA:  She loves the hand tossed classic cheese pizza, a Dayton original!  Alexis also finds their breadsticks and cheese sauce irresistable.

Alexis Gomez  having lunch with some young fans

3) MI BURRITO MEXICAN GRILL:  Located at 8374 Princeton Glendale Road in Mason, Ohio, this place is a little known secret to Daytonians.   Alexis says it is worth the short drive for some amazing burritos, nachos and more Mexican specialties

.
4) AREPAS and CO.:  Sweet Choclo Arepas are her fave at this Columbian restaurant with 2 popular locations in the Dayton area
.

5) CITY BBQ:  Her “go to” is the Chicken Tenders with the

City BBQ, Centerville

Brushfire BBQ sauce!  Alexis hits up the downtown Centerville location, but there is another location in Beavercreek/Fairborn at 2330 N Fairfield Rd. for foodies in that area.

6) BOOSALIS BAKING and CAFE: Alexis told us about an incredible trademark menu item here, and she was right!  The Cranberry Turkey Sandwich served with homemade cranberry bread is one of the best sandwiches Food Adventures has ever eaten.  Also those Kouign Amann pastries, pronounced “Queen Amann,” are delicate, delicious buttery pastries, that are reminiscent of a croissant in a cupcake shape.  You gotta try this place in Cross Pointe Center!

Lock 27, home of an incredible Keener Burger made with local beef

7) LOCK 27 BREWING:  Alexis says the Keener Burger is the best bet here.  Chef House agrees !

8) DIXIE DAIRY DREEM: This iconic ice cream stand in Moraine is a local favorite.   Alexis grew up on the chili dogs and blue raspberry slush floats, which says are some of the best in the world.
.

9) DEWEY’S PIZZA:   Great pizza, started in the Oakley neighborhood in Cincinnati.  Alexis suggests this custom combination to top your pizza: White Sauce, Ricotta Cheese, Banana Peppers and Roasted Red Peppers.

Arepas and Co. is on of Alexis’ favorites too

.
10) ELE CAKE CO. BISTRO and WINE BAR:  Alexis frequents this bistro at Austin Landing for their Ratatouille dish.  It is a friendly and fun atmosphere at this little shop
.
WHEW ! What a list ! We cannot thank Alexis enough for taking time out of her busy schedule to have a Food Adventure with us.
We wish her all the success in the world, and are grateful to have a such a sweet, local superstar in our midst!  Best wishes to her and her family, and we are sure that we will see her out and about and be able to share some foodie talk again soon.. until then, we told you where to find her good music, and now you know some good eats to have while listening to it!

Ickey, Archer’s and Asthma

May 8, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Food Adventures is all about fun, food and the lighter side of life.  We pick out Dayton eatings spots and have great times doing so.  Today however, we want to take time to mention a serious cause.  Chef House, Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu are fans of the restaurants that give back to the community.  Today we recognize another such effort from the owners of Archer’s Tavern in Centerville.

Today we recognize the final hours to get involved with a charitable cause at the 1st Annual Dayton Fairways for Airways a Celeb Pro-Am golf Outing to benefit the Javonte Woods Foundation.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Always involved with local charities

— On August 14th, 2010, Princeton High School Student Jovante Woods died suddenly from a severe asthma attack. His parents, Ickey and Chandra, were inspired to keep his memory alive.   They started the Javonte Woods foundation with the goal of educating and helping prevent others from experiencing the loss of a loved one to this condition.

— ARCHER’S TAVERN and Former Cincinnati Bengal’s Football star ICKEY WOODS have teamed up to hold a golf outing for the foundation at NCR Country Club Monday May 9th.  Last minute golfers may be able to attend, email dan@archerstavern.com

— Some of the celebs expected to be in attendance include:

Ed Young, former UD Basketball superstar

Jim Breech, former Bengal Kicker

Andy Harmon, former Philadelphia Eagles Defensive All Star from Centerville

Ira Hillary, Bengals former Wide Receiver

James Brooks, Bengals former All Pro Running Back

Pete Johnson, former Bengals Running Back

Tom Browning, former Reds Pitcher

Solomon Wilcots, former Bengal Defensive Back and current ESPN personality

Keith Byars, former Ohio State and Philadelphia Eagles star running back and Dayton native

Hanford Dixon, former Cleveland Browns star Defensive Back

The Big Ragu is still looking for his golf ball at NCR North course

NCR Country Club is the perfect backdrop for this event, Monday, with its world class courses.  Thick brush and tricky fairways, will make for a fun and challenging outing.  We wish the participants the best of luck, and the celebs too !

Food Adventures also wishes the foundation and “Fairways for Airways” much success in the future. Thank you to the organizers, like Archer’s owner Dan Apolito, Ickey Woods and the celebs.  Also a shout out to the people who patronize this tournament.  You make the world go ’round !

If you would like to donate or get involved in next year’s event, email dan@archerstavern.com or shop Bengals signed mechandise at the Jovante Woods Store

THE BAD JUAN: A Dayton Legend

May 5, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Outside of the Kettering Elsa’s

Hey Gringo, looking to tie one on during Cinco De Mayo? Then take a sip of a true Food Adventure in a glass. Oh yes, the legendary Bad Juan margarita served exclusively at Elsa’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantinas around town.

Whether on the rocks or frozen, salt or no-salt, every Daytonian has a “Bad Juan” story about themselves or a friend. Hungry Jax, Chef House and The Big Ragu are no different. We have had to push stumbling pals into backseats of cars, or help lift some drunky pants ladies into the back of an SUV after a couple of these drinks. We have felt the wrath of Juan ourselves, having numb lips and the buzz that suddenly creeps up on you with this devilish drink.

Let’s be candid, Bad Juans are a Dayton icon. This badass drink even has its own website, badjuan.com. Here is some more on the man, the myth, the legend.. BAD JUAN !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Since 1981, Bad Juans have been served frozen or on the rocks. They also come in a few flavor variations, but the original Bad Juan remains the most popular.

—Elsa’s has various locations in Centerville, Kettering and Dayton

A Bad Juan on the Rocks: The Legend

— Rumors have swirled about the ingredients. People have been trying to figure out the recipe for years. Food Adventures  may have some inside scoop on the recipe, and although we can’t post it here, we can give you some info. Our inside source tells us that the Bad Juan is made up of only 3 secret ingredients: Triple Sec, Tequila and Lime Juice. We cannot tell you the brands used or the amounts. We can, however, confirm that Mountain Dew is NOT an ingredient, so lets finally put that rumor to bed.

— We believe the secret to the great taste is not only in the ingredients, but in the preparation. The Bad Juan’s are constantly mixed in those plastic, see-through drink machines you are used to seeing at convenient stores or food counters. The thorough mixing of ingredients in these machines blend the drink into that perfect drunken mixture.

— Elsa’s does limit the amount of Bad Juans that a customer can consume (usually 2 or 3 depending on your server). However, urban legends and tall tales have surfaced about people drinking a couple mini pitchers of Bad Juans, or somehow downing a half dozen of them unbeknownst to their waiter or waitress.

— You can even buy Bad Juans in the store, bottled.  Yes, by the bottle in liquor  and grocery stores from as far away as Covington, Kentucky’s famous Party Source. The bottled drink is 21 percent alcohol, or 42 proof.  We believe that the in-house version mixed at the restaurants is a little higher than that. Heidelberg Distributors stats confirm that Bad Juans hold the all-time distributor record for the fastest selling new product.

Time for a breakdown of the baddest drink to grace the Gem City… here is our patented.. “Must Drinks”

MUST DRINKS:

— BAD JUAN on THE ROCKS: Simple, pure and lethal. This is for the heavy hitters who like to get down to business and gulp ’em down. They are however served with a tiny straw and a lime wedge for those who like to sip these slowly and savor the experience.

— FROZEN BAD JUAN: The chilled, traditional version of the legend are just as strong as the ones on the rocks. Served with a lime, it is curiously tasty when the mixture begins to melt. If you drink these too fast, beware of ‘brain freeze’ or a condition known as drunky pants.

— STRAWBERRY FROZEN BAD JUAN: Not big on tequila or margaritas? This flavored Bad Juan masks the alcohol taste, and is probably our favorite version of the iconic drink. Give it a try, we bet you like it! It is also available on the rocks for you purists.

— BLUE JUAN: This holiday season is a good time to give one of these a try. You may have a blue Christmas without it. It has a great taste and is available on the rocks only.

Honorable Mention: The Raspberry Bad Juan, the Watermelon Bad Juan and the calorie conscious “Skinny Juan”

THE BIG JUAN DEBATE: FROZEN OR ON THE ROCKS???

Miami Valley residents have long debated whether Bad Juans are better frozen or on the rocks. For the most part, guys tend to have them on the rocks, while girls seem to prefer the frozen margaritas. But we say…. hell, try them all and get a designated driver.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD BAD JUAN STORY?? PLEASE COMMENT BELOW!

Have an opinion on Bad Juan? Be heard and post it below !

After more than 30 years Elsa’s is still having fun, and this drink is “Still the Juan.”

The New Archer’s Tavern in Kettering

May 3, 2016 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Inside the cleared out dining room

EXCLUSIVE! Drywall is being demolished.  New equipment is being installed.  Things are just beginning to take shape at Archer’s Tavern’s second location, soon to be opened in Kettering.  The new restaurant will be where the old Tumbleweed restaurant was located on Dorothy Lane.   Food Adventures has the first peek inside the renovations, you won’t see anywhere else.   And one thing is for sure… this restaurant is gonna be big, both in size and excitement.

The ownership team of Dan Apolito, Mike Fullenkamp and Scott Dorsten are bringing their winning formula across town, but for now, they have been putting some sweat equity into the project.  Most of the work so far has been done in the kitchen area. Hammering and tossing of scrap material can be heard on any given day, and the owners aren’t shy on grabbing tools themselves, and diving in on the teardown.

It isn’t hard to imagine the new location being packed with new fans of their burgers, pizza, wings, beer selection and so much more.  Being across from Delco Park, “Archers’s 2” is a perfect place for that “after softball game” dinner and drinks.  Archer’s Tavern’s reputation is good food and reasonable prices, from their salads to their chili, the menu is delicious.

Want the scoop on the new location?  ONLY FOOD ADVENTURES HAS THIS EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK!

Dan Apolito & Mike Fullenkamp taking Archers to a new level

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— ARCHER’S KETTERING will be located at 2030 E Dorothy Lane

— The new location will bring that same signature menu that the crowds in Centerville have grown to love over the past 5 years.

— The restaurant will feature 24 draft beer taps, and an eclectic selection of local, familiar and rare beers.

— Archer’s will continue to feature Buckeye Vodka in many of its cocktails and special events.

— The seating area will be much larger than the Centerville restaurant

— The owners plan to open the eatery in July, given that the permits and construction finish on schedule.

MUST EATS:

—SWEET and SEXY WINGS:  You wont hear about these on any other food site, because they aren’t on the menu… it is a special request.  Sweet and Sexy Wings are wings with Dry Rub spice, drizzled with Spicy Garlic sauce, then tossed in Sweet BBQ sauce.  The result is tangy and slightly hot taste of joy.  Probably the best wing sauce we have ever tasted.

The assembled Sticky Burger

— THE STICKY BURGER:  A burger with peanut butter on it? YES!  The result is a unique taste, reminiscent of a Thai Peanut Sauce.   This burger is the Big Ragu’s Favorite.  It also comes with bacon and smoked pepper jack cheese.  This is a curiously good burger that you won’t soon forget.

— THE CHILI – They have a chili cookoff each year, and the winner gets their chili on the menu.  In other words, it is the best of the best.  You gotta get a cup of this chili,  great flavor and zing guaranteed !

—  THE TACO PIZZA: Muey Bueno ...They use enchilada sauce for the pizza sauce.  They add taco beef, cheddar and Monterey cheeses, onion, tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro.  Hot, spicy and ooh so nicey!

—  THE MARGHERITA PIZZA:  Fresh Mozzarella and a smooth tomato sauce is the key to this pizza.  Fresh basil leaves and Roma tomatoes top off this vegetarian pie nicely.  We cant believe we ate the whole thing!

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK: A massive, heaping sandwich filled with meat, peppers and melted provolone cheese.  You can also request cheese whiz on this monster.  We say, go for it.  This is how they do it in Philadelphia.  Your choice of shaved ribeye steak or sliced chicken breast for the meat.

— ARCHER’S BREAD PUDDING:  Made with Bill’s Donuts… need we say more?

Honorable Mention: The Gourmet Grilled Cheese – omg… the dijon mustard is brilliant and makes the sandwich, as does the buttery bread and chewy cheese combo.

Food Adventures is excited for this next chapter in the lives of Archer’s ownership.  They give a lot back to the community, and we wish them continued success.

SPEAKING OF HELPING THE COMMUNITY, TOMORROW WE FOLLOW UP THIS STORY WITH A CHARITY EVENT THAT ARCHER’S HAS HELPED ORGANIZE THAT NEEDS YOUR HELP !!

Do you know the Food Adventures Crew?  The Big Ragu, Chef House and Hungry Jax would like to take a minute and invite you to “like” them on Facebook by clicking HERE.  From food photos, to restaurant events around Dayton, our blog is a foodie’s paradise.

LaRosa’s 40+ Year Spaghetti Pigout Tradition

April 27, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

All you Can Eat Spaghetti Mon & Tues at LaRosa’s

LaRosa’s Family Pizzeria has had the best dinner deal in town, for four decades.  It is called “Spaghetti a  Plenty” Nights.  We decided to revisit this weekly special and see if it is still “bowling” folks over.

We found out, kids love it, grown ups love it.. so what’s going on here?

Oodles and oodles of noodles… enough for several Food Adventures, that’s what’s going on here.  It is a chance to indulge at a nominal price.

Since the 1970’s LaRosa’s has been serving up the Monday and Tuesday “All-You-Can-Eat” Spaghetti deal for adults and for kids.  The Big Ragu remembers those 70’s nights in Centerville and Lebanon taking advantage of the special treat.  If you love pasta, this place has been the mecca for your craving at the beginning of each week.  It is a tradition to “pig out” and loosen your belt after the meal….

Do you love your spaghetti with chunky marinara sauce, full of tomatoes?  Or are you the meat sauce type, even loving a big old meatball in the middle of your spun noodles.  This dinner has all the fixings and is crazy cheap.  How Cheap?  99 cents cheap for kids and $5.19 for adults.  From the Oregano to the Parmesan, this night will have you and your family dancing in your booth seats.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Looks like it is Meatball Mania on this Food Adventure

WHAT: “SPAGHETTI-A-PLENTY” NIGHTS at LaROSA’S PIZZERIA.. it’s ALL-U-CAN-EAT Spaghetti!  Capeesh?

WHEN:  MONDAY and TUESDAY’s from 4pm – close.

COST: 99cents for  kids, $5.19 for adults. (Sometimes they charge you $1 for meat sauce)

Ok , so The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House have super secret codes and we are gonna share with you the way to get the most of this special if you are a pasta lover.  We will channel your inner Italian …especially like the Italian in us!

ROUND 1: DINNER SALAD –  This isn’t your typical “side salad.”  They are generous with shredded mozzarella, covering your mixed greens plate, and serving your favorite dressing on the side.  Dig it, it is cold, refreshing and delicious.  Even served with an olive or 2, make sure you shake, shake shake some of that Parmesan cheese on top.

ROUND 2: SPAGHETTI WITH TOMATO SAUCE:  Order this first.  A big portion, how we like it, with a LOT of sauce.  Buddy LaRosa’s own family recipe of sauce, that has stood the test for 6 decades. Ask for the TEXAS TOAST here and work it into your noodle spinning.  Did we forget to mention.. sprinkle the oregano, hot pepper, and Parmesan cheese on your “Sketty Mountain.”

Salad Included.. Do it up !

ROUND 3: SPAGHETTI with MEAT SAUCE:  Finish strong, even asking for a meatball in the middle.  They serve this and other “refills” as half portions.  So hey, deal with it… meaty, so good.  Ask for the BREADSTICKS option on this round, so you take advantage of all the amenities

**NOTE: Your kids don’t like sauce?  No problem!  They have a butter sauce available, so the noodles are served plain… go ahead, if you want it this way, put your “lunch hooks” in the air and wave…

That’s our system, after this you are on your own.  You could keep going, ordering more servings or eat forkfuls off your kids plates and a pound of spaghetti like Hungry Jax.   Another option is spill half of it down your chest like The Big Ragu, leaving stains as memories of past Food Adventures.

Want something besides spaghetti?  Well we have a few patented “Must Eats” that you want to sink your teeth into.   And away we go ….

Pepperoni Pizza – it put Kings Island on the International food map

MUST EATS: (BESIDES SPAGHETTI A PLENTY)

— PEPPERONI PIZZA: Why just pepperoni? Because it is the pizza that put Kings Island on the International food map.  Come on, the pizza tastes so good.  Whether you are sitting in a wet bathing suit on a bench after “Waterworks” water park, or in a booth with your favorite pizza pal.

— GARLIC FRIES: Dripping with freshly minced garlic and butter, what’s not to love.  Your breath might be rank, but your mouth will be smiling.

— LASAGNA: A brick of lasagna, smothered in sauce and cheese.  Try it and get lost in gooey, cheesey, saucy heaven.  A labor of love, brought to you by Buddy LaRosa.

But this week it was all about the spaghetti.  It was about fork spinnin, sauce drippin’, bread dippin’ good eats.  “Spaghetti A Plenty” is a CHEAP, fun way to get the family together.  It has been going on for 40 years.. why don’t you stop at LaRosa’s Pizzeria and see why ?  See you at tables….
