Food Adventures has a new, original feature called a “Second Helping of…” 

Food Adventures already sets itself apart from the rest, because we dine at a place many times before an article materializes on Dayton Most Metro.   From time to time, we will revisit some of our favorite Miami Valley eateries, and let you know about new specialty items that are delicious, or standard fare that you “gotta try.”   This is not a recycling of an old article, but some new takes on the menu.  You can still expect the same killer “food porn” photos, and “must eats.”

This time, we dive into one of our all-time favorite Food Adventure spots.   So sit down, pull yourself to the table, and enjoy a second helping of.. KABUKI !

You may recall our original article on Kabuki Korean and Japanese Restaurant, in Centerville, if not CLICK HERE.   The restaurant continues to ‘pack em in’, and has a loyal following, like no other sushi spot in the Dayton area.

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Del Sot Bibimbob: A Korean Dish

— Located at 848 S. Main St. in Centerville, the menu is mostly Japanese, with a touch of Korean specialties as well

— The secret to this restaurant’s success is fresh, delicious food.  The kitchen area and sushi bar are immaculate.  We believe that a clean environment is especially important when serving raw food.  It also shows respect for the art of sushi !

— Pay attention and save with coupon specials through email, mail and facebook!

— Warning, peak hours may become crowded in this cozy, tight dining room.

 

Kabuki is a perfect place to get out of your comfort zone and experience a true Food Adventure.   Try something new and wild.  This is the spot to do it !  We have ordered almost everything on the menu and love theses sushi rolls: Boston Roll, Playboy Roll, Mexican Roll, Rock N Roll Roll, and the Spider Roll, along with some other favorites:

 MUST EATS:

Tuna Tataki: Seared for Your Pleasure

— SHRIMP TEMPURA ROLL:  A must eat for the sushi beginner.  The roll is stuffed with cooked, fried shrimp. What’s not to love?

— DEL SOT BIBIMBOB:  From the Korean menu, this is a true Food Adventure pick.  The dish is served in a hot stone bowl.  It includes mixed vegetables& beef served over steamed rice , all topped with a fried egg.  It is served with a side of hot & spicy sauce.  Big Ragu liked it so much, he actually danced and sang a new Hanson  song “MMM Bibimbob.”

— RAW SALMON (SAKE):  This is a slice of uncooked salmon on top of rice.  Yes it is raw, but drip some soy and wasabi on it, and it melts in your mouth.  We don’t know the secret, but Kabuki has some of the tastiest salmon in town.  We just keep coming back for more.

— RAW TUNA (MAGURO): A raw piece of tuna, over a small ball of rice.  So hearty, it is almost like a piece of steak.  So full of protein, one bite will make you feel nourished and alive.  For $2.75 per piece, it is an exotic delicacy.

— ATLANTIC ROLL: A seafood lovers dream, with specialties from the ocean.  This roll is filled with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, & avocado.   On top of the roll is snapper and wasabi sauce.   Grab a pair of chopsticks and work some magic.

Honorable Mention: Not in the mood for experimenting?  Then try the Chicken Teryaki or Katsu Chicken Meal, guaranteed to please the “meat and potato” types who love BBQ Chicken.

 

With healthy eating a concern to so many people, we will share a favorite menu item that will keep you bathing suit ready .. Wear it to the restaurant, we don’t care.

LITE BITES:

Kabuki: One of Dayton’s Best

 — TUNA TATAKI:  This ‘must eat’ is big on taste, light on calories.  It is a plate of seared, ahi tuna, splashed with a citrus vinegar sauce.  A cross between cooked and raw, this dish is a simple ‘back to the basics’ taste of sushi.  The fresh tuna is healthy and pleasing to the tastebuds, which makes it a win-win combination.

Bella Vino in Springboro, isn’t your average wine store.  Sure, they have all the chardonnays, merlots, and syrahs one could dream of.  But now, they have kicked it up a notch.

Under new management, Bella Vino brought in Chef Jen Anticoli, who has introduced some dishes that are fabulous when paired with wine, or even just dining on the patio.  The Big Ragu & Crew are all about good eats outdoors.  If you are the same way, then Bella Vino will quickly become one of your favorite spots for a Food Adventure

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Bella Vino Wine Merchants is open Mon 4-10pm Tues-Thurs 11:30am -10pm, Fri and Sat 11:30am-midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.  They even have a location in West Chester.

— Perfect place for patio drinks and dining.  The spacious, outside dining area is a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.  The inside dining room is sleek and contemporary, with a capacity of 80 people.

— Up and coming chef, Jen Anticoli has revamped the menu and added her personal spin on some Italian dishes and more.

— Bella Vino has over 1400 wines to choose from, and is frequently running specials on various brands.

— Summer is bringing new events to Bella Vino, such as “Party on the Patio Nights”, with the kitchen setting up a grill outside.

— Look for more menu expansions like “Strawberry Muscato Lemonade” and Gourmet Subs

We were impressed by the food, and it definitely satisfied our Food Adventure instincts.   Of all the menu items, The Big Ragu did have some favorites.   So let us present, without further adoo, our infamous “must eats!”

 

MUST EATS:

— GOAT CHEESE CRUSTINI:  Creamy, sweet and full of flavor, the fresh tomatoes and goat cheese combine amazingly.  The Big Ragu will go on record, that this is his favorite crustini of all-time !  The sauces and spices added make this a definite ‘must eat,’ and perfect with any wine.  The secret ingredient?   Pistachio Crumbles for the finishing touch.

— CARMEL NUT BAKED BRIE:  Served freshly baked and still steaming, this brie is a delicious starter.  Garnished with berries and nuts, drizzled with honey, and served with bread and crackers, it is a great segway for any vino ! We think you will be hard pressed to share this killer appetizer.

— BAKED POTATO PIZZA:  Flaky crust with toppings that perfectly mimics a good potato skin, this pie is filling for even the big appetites.   Made with chopped garlic, mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese, onions and a sour cream drizzle, we bet you can’t eat just one square.

— BLT PIZZA:  This white sauce pizza is a good twist on an old favorite using spinach instead of lettuce.  Bacon is all the rage, right?  Get your fix on this pie.  Toppings include and tomato, bacon, cheddar-jack cheese and garlic mayo.  We don’t know what kind of wine goes, with a BLT, we just eat the damn thing…..

We were pleasantly surprised at the food offerings at Bella Vino and look for more great things to some.  Chef Jen is starting to carve a name for herself with a style all her own.  Her unique flavors and ingredients make her a diamond in the rough of the Miami Valley’s culinary landscape.

Make sure you check out this little known secret located at 495 N. Main Street in Springboro.  Bella Vino may mean “Good Wine” in Italian, but now it can be known for its good food as well.

Ben & Jerry’s 35th Anniversary Means Free Cones!

Fullscreen-capture-532014-22654-PMThirty five years ago today Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield celebrated surviving their very first year of running their business. To thank those that supported their little ice cream store, Ben & Jerry’s, they decided to give everyone a free cone.  And on every April 8th since then they’ve continued that tradition. The event grows larger every year and this year there are 26 countries taking part with over 700 scoop shops serving free ice cream and frozen yogurt (for those wanting a few less calories) from all participating stores.

Fans can choose any flavor they’d like, but they’ll also be able to try Ben & Jerry’s newest flavors, which include:

  • Salted Caramel Blondie: Sweet cream ice cream with blonde brownies and a salted caramel swirl
  • Hazed and Confused: Hazelnut and chocolate ice creams with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge swirl
  • Cotton Candy: Cotton candy ice cream loaded with cotton candy piece

For me it will be a touch decision between Phish Food (chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, caramel and fudge bits) or Chocolate Peppermint Crunch (Chocolate Ice Cream with Peppermint and Fudge Swirls and Mint Chocolate Cookie Balls) or if I’m trying to be good Chocolate Fudge Brownie (Low Fat Frozen Chocolate Yogurt with Fudge Brownies).

No matter what flavor you pick- the best part is it will be free from noon to 8pm at the ice cream parlor located at 1934 Brown Street. And be warned-  for some silly reason, the Ben & Jerry’s at The Greene never seems to participate in this promotion.

Happy New Beer!

This bar was about to become really busy…

December 5th, 1933 is the official day that liquor flowed back into the very dry veins of the United States. No more sneaking whiskey across the frozen Detroit RIver, no more gin made of questionable liquor, no more rum runners sneaking hooch into the country through Florida. This country could get back to the business of distilling and selling liquor, creating jobs and giving a financial shot in the arm during the long dark days of the Great Depression. Before that day there were some cracks in the dam. Trickles of legal liquor started to flow from wineries, which was not a big surprise. The religious leaders of the country made sure that communion was not interrupted by social change. Brewers, on the other hand, were able to clean out the tanks and fire up the bottling machines for the first time in over a decade earlier in the year.

Representative Thomas Cullen (D-NY) and Senator Pat Harrison (D-MS) put together a bill that allowed the brewers to stop making ice cream and malt syrup and get back to brewing. The Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law on March 22nd, 1933 by FDR, and allowed breweries to brew alcohol at a strength of 3.2%. Still very low by our standards, but at the time it was a glass of water after a long trip to the desert. This law went into effect on April 7, 1933, and tavern owners could not have been happier. Ever since that initial celebration, every year we as a country have come together and celebrated that day as National Beer Day, or New Beer’s Eve.

If you are paying any attention, you may have noticed that there are a few new breweries in Dayton. One, two…maybe about nine that are in operation. We are going to celebrate National Beer Day by taking a look at these outstanding new breweries and asking them about their favorite brews and most popular beers.

You don’t have to drink them all today, but here are some suggestions.

Hairless Hare Brewery: The brewery of the north, working their magic in Vandalia, is drawing fans from all over the Miami Valley. Their fans are raving about the Hoppin’ Hare IPA, and they have just recently started to serve delightful food you can wash down with their beers.

 

Eudora Brewing: Located in Kettering on Wilimington Pike, their space contains some big flavors. They are working towards allowing members of the community to use their space to brew, but in the meantime are creating their own outstanding brews. Their Boomerang IPA is one of their best sellers, with the Thunderball Stout coming right behind it. The brewer I spoke with suggested the easy drinking Bee’s Knees Pale Ale. It is a light, crisp beer brewed with local honey.

Star City Brewing: This group of local Miamisburg brewers saw some potential in the old Peerless Mill Inn. They set up shop and the beer started to flow. They have a core group of four taps that have been pleasing the crowds. And those crowds are drinking down the Oatmeal Stout and Bavarian Hefeweizen the quickest. On their rotating tap, their Milk Stout gains quite a bit of interest.

Lock 27 Brewing: The brews here rotate on a regular basis, but there are a few that people make sure they follow. Their Map Reader IPA is a big hit with the people who seek it out, and the Bear Trap brown ale is high on the list of beers to keep an eye on. Fortunately Lock 27 makes it easy to follow what they have on tap through BeerMenus, who will email you when their taps rotate. Try their food while you are there. We hear it is as good as the beer.

Toxic Brew Company: Celebrating your one year anniversary is great for any business. This new Oregon District staple just celebrated theirs, and they show no signs of stopping. They offer an incredibly wide selection of beers, but a few rise to the top of the menu. Abby’s Cure, a Belgian Tripel, is one of them that rises, as well as Porn or Pawn Pepper Pale Ale, named after an old Oregon District drinking game (which I will someday learn). Another staff recommendation? The Practice Yoga IPA, named after another local business and a gentle introduction into the world of IPAs.

Warped Wing Brewing Company: Let’s stay in downtown Dayton and welcome the newest addition to the local beer community! Their following has been growing, and they can see some great things coming in the near future for their brewery and the local craft brewing scene in general. The Flying Rye has received excellent reviews (and is a top seller), as well as Ermals. Keep a look out for the return of the Red IPA, which was released in a limited batch and could come back soon.

Yellow Springs Brewery: Surrounded by nature and also to the north, this brewery has been growing at a rapid pace. Not only are their great beers available in their tap room, you can find them in bars and restaurants all over the city. What to choose from on their extensive list? Their most popular requests are the Captain Stardust saisson and Wyatt’s Eviction English-style pale ale. Fans of hop may also look for their Wobbly Wheel or Breaking Edge IPAs. They also have an award winning smoked brown ale, Smokin’ Handsome, which makes special appearances. You just have to be on the lookout.

Dayton Beer Company: The first one to the party is the anchor of our list. Right on Dorothy Lane in Kettering, they were the first new brewery in the area. They have been building their small batch magic into some award winning palette-pleasers. Their Mad River Milk Stout has been a hit with their patrons, as well as the Investor’s India Pale Ale. Their influence continues to expand, spreading out to local hot spots in Dayton and Columbus.

The craft beer boom keeps growing, with even more great beers on the way from Fifth Street Brewing Coop getting ready brew, and Carillon Brewing Company getting ready to open later this year. There has been such a boom of breweries in the Gem City, you can even take a tour of them via Dayton Brew Tours! These are what the brewers and bar tenders of these establishments know are their best beers, but what about you? What beers do you think are the best local ones in Dayton? Spring Menu Has Arrived At Lily’s Bistro

Lily’s Bistro, located at 329 E. Fifth Street in Dayton’s Oregon District, has launched their latest seasonal menu featuring springtime fare.

 

General Manager Emily Mendenhall says, “everyone is so beyond ready for spring time, and we are thrilled to have a new menu that reflects the season. I love root vegetables but we’ve been eating them for months.  Our new menu drops them in favor of springtime produce like asparagus and sugar snap peas. Additionally, our wine, beer, and cocktail offerings have changed with the season.  No more apple cider in cocktails, and a lot more focus on refreshing, crisp white wines.

Executive Chef Mariah Gahagan says “This menu is a big milestone for us.  We opened late last spring, so thisis the first time we’ve brought back an existing entrée, which is the Cobia surf n’ turf.  Cobia is a meaty white fish and it’s served with Spanish chorizo and fingerling potatoes in a sherry broth—kind of my version of a bouillabaisse.  We’ve also brought back lamb chops, which to me are the perfect spring protein.  We are serving them grilled over a light chickpea and tomato stew with roasted asparagus, then topped with flash fried kalamata olives  and harissa-a Tunisian hot pepper chili paste.”

 

Lily’s Bistro offers their seasonal lunch menu Tuesday-Saturday from 11am-3pm, and their full dinner menu Tuesday-Thursday from 5-10pm as well as Friday and Saturday from 5-11pm.  On Friday and Saturday they also have a full bar and late night kitchen until 1am.  On Sundays, Lily’s serves their brunch menu from 11am-3pm, and has “Family Style Fried Chicken Dinner” from 5-10pm, a more casual dinner menu focusing on local, free-range fried chicken and assorted sides with a good deal of southern influence.

Pete Rose & Cassano’s Team up for a Food Adventure

Chip Cassano, Chris Cassano and Pete Rose Announce a  Promotional Partnership

The Hit King and the Pizza King were together again for a mini press conference held at the Cassano’s offices on Stroop Rd. today promoting a Food Adventure of sorts.

 

Dayton Most Metro’s own Big Ragu was on hand and even asked Pete Rose “What’s Your Favorite Toppings on a Cassano’s Pizza?”

Pete Rose’s replied with a smile,  “Pepperoni and Extra Cheese.”

 

The hit king was in town promoting his “4192: An Evening with Pete Rose LIVE” event to be held at the Fraze June 24th, 2014.  Cassano’s was also celebrating their 60th Anniversary, and giving away a corvette June 24th as well.

 

It was nice seeing Ohio icons like the Cassano family and Pete Rose, side by side.  Pete told stories of  playing baseball in Dayton in 1960, before he signed with the Reds and how  Cassano’s pizza was a favorite of his.  He is definitely no stranger to the signature thin crust and square slices.  At the press conference held Tuesday April 1st, Pete told a couple of stories about what Dayton means to him.  He also told tales of baseball, Tony Perez and his hopes for his son, Pete Jr. to someday manage the Dayton Dragons, and maybe even the Reds.  We hope so too Pete !!

Incorruptible, The Next Release From Warped Wing

The name, Incorruptible was inspired by James Ritty’s cash register invention in 1879 called ‘Ritty’s Incorruptible Cashier’. This IPA is hazy, golden in color with bubble gum and herbal aromas and flavors from the German Sapphire hop. The malt character is light and crisp and the special abbey strain of yeast adds a fruity, banana note that supports the bubble gum aroma of the hops. 77 IBU & 7.7% ABV. See you Thursday….Cheers!

Free Breakfast Coffee at McDonald’s Through April 13th

149155_170676636284530_3435237_aCoffee, java, morning mocha– whatever you call it, you can get a free cup of it at McDonalds on Monday.

The campaign, which kicks off today, Monday March 31st and will give customers at participating restaurants a 12-ounce small coffee at no charge through April 13. It will be up to each McDonald’s location to decide if customers get just one cup or refills on the free coffee.

 

McDonald’s coffee gimmick follows  Taco Bell’s breakfast rollout of its first-ever breakfast menu, which it dubbed as the “largest menu expansion in Taco Bell’s 50-year history.”  Taco Bell’s move could take a big bite out of Mickey D’s breakfast sales.While McDonald’s remains the country’s largest fast-food chain, it is trying out new things in an effort to stay on top.

McDonald’s said the free coffee is its way of encouraging new guests to try McCafe Coffee and “surprising them in unexpected ways all year long.” The company said that starting in mid-April, it will surprise a Twitter follower every day for the year with McCafe coffee and prizes.

Zombie Dogz Comes Out Of Hibernation For Walking Dead Finale at Taggarts

the-walking-dead-Ready for some Sunday night fun?  Taggarts Pub, at the corner of Wilmington and Patterson, is hosting a celebration of the season ending of the post-apocalyptic horror drama television series Walking Dead starting at 7pm.

With a Zombie Walk down Patterson Boulevard, a Tap Takeover by Toxic Brew Company and prizes for the best Walking Dead costumes, and the final episode of season 4 starting up at 9pm,  what more could you want?

Food, well ok, just to feed all the undead, Zombie Dogz will make a special appearance about 7:30pm.  Featured dogs of the night will be:

The Juan of the Dead: BBQ pulled pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard.
The Greek Freak: kalamata olives, feta cheese, tomato jam, tzatziki sauce, pickled red onions, and dill.

 

Grambee Zombee: Frankie’s freaky taco dip, shredded lettuce, cilantro sour cream and corn chips.
Debuting- The Evil Ash: roasted shiitake mushrooms, goat cheese, bacon crumbles, baby arugula tossed in a sherry vinaigrette.

 
There will also be truffle Mac n cheese sides available.

Corleone’s: A Menu You Can’t Refuse

Well,  The Big Ragu & Crew are here to do a service for you.  Today, we share with you a place you may not know about.  A kitchen that produces some great pizza, pasta and more.  In other words, let the Food Adventure peeps be your consigliere on this one.

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Corleone’s has two Locations, one at 725 Lyons Rd. and the original at 966 Patterson Rd.

— Homemade dough everyday.  This ensures not only fresh pizzas, but tasty pasta dinners.

 

— Amazing Specialty Pizzas.  These are mafia boss of the menu.  Deluxe toppings, and themed pizzas like the Taco Pie, Greek Pie, Steak Pie will make your day.  There are many more unique creations with white or red pizza sauces. 

— Calzones and Hoagie Sandwiches are the dark horse on the menu, and will “whack” your tastebuds.

— Unique menu items that only New Yorkers typically see, like Pepperoni Rolls and Sausage Rolls.

— Carryout is available, and they have Delivery Service as well.

 

MUST EATS:

 — MANICOTTI:  Served piping hot , this meal is liberal on cheese and sauce.  It is absolutely delicious, and it is the Big Ragu’s favorite choice on the menu.

— TACO PIE:  Corleone’s serves a great version of taco pizza.  The fresh lettuce, olives and tomatoes make all the difference.  Send your hitmen in for one of these babies.

— BUFFALO CHICKEN PIZZA:  Tasty, tangy and even a kid pleaser.  Again a good version of a unique pizza spin.

— WINGS:  We were super surprised at how good the breaded wings were.  They are crunchy, crispy and ready for dipping in your favorite sauce.  Best of all, they are cooked all the way through !

— SPINACH CALZONE:  Served with marinara, the key is again in the fresh dough.  Filled with ricotta cheese (like a real calzone should be), it is a flavorful, filling meal.

Honorable Mention: 

The Eggplant Hoagie is a good sub, capesh?  Did we mention it is a monster?  So split one with your favorite wiseguy and see what all the fuss is about.

The Wedgie: Want a Food Adventure in a plate?  Try a Wedgie!  No it is not the “grundy” you used to give your classmates.  It is a calzone with no ricotta cheese or tomato sauce.  It is cooked and then topped with lettuce and onions.  Call it an Italian version of the mini-super burrito and fagheddaboutit.

 

Surprisingly Good Wings at Corleone’s !

One warning, if you have a large group coming to Corleone’s, you definitely want to call ahead so they are properly prepared for your group of friends or paisans.  Also, the wine and beer selections are limited, so beware if you are looking for something special to drink.

Now “youse guys got” some good direction from The Big Ragu on a little known secret.   What’s not a secret is that practically all of the pizzas we have tried, during our numerous visits have been great.  From the top your own, to the seafood pizza, it is up to you to find your own favorite.   All we can do is lead you to the good stuff.   Trust us, it’s the best pizza and pasta spot that you’ve never heard of.   It is definitely a menu you can’t refuse…

Support The Beer Bill To Allow Ohio Brewers To Make & Sell Higher Proof Beers

ohio-craft-beerHow many times have you heard of a friend making a beer run to Kentucky?  It’s often because beer drinkers can hop across the Ohio River to buy beers such as Samuel Adams Utopias and Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, which aren’t available in Ohio.

For Rep. Dan Ramos, a Democrat from Lorain, west of Cleveland, that story is too common, so he recently introduced House Bill 391.  Also known as the  “Ohio Beer Bill” passage would increase the maximum percentage of alcohol allowed in beer sold or produced in the state from 12 to 21 percent. That would bring it line with alcoholic beverages like wine and the low-proof liquors often sold at grocery stores.

Of the 12% current  limit in Ohio, Nick Bowman, one of the co-owners of Dayton’s ohio_beernewest brewery, Warped Wing Brewing Co. says , “besides the fact that it holds some brewers back from creating some higher gravity beers,  the 12% ceiling is irrelevant in today’s craft brewing environment.  14% is really the standard ABV ceiling that most craft breweries can hit (if they want to).

Bowman continues, “I think the biggest reason the change is needed is to prevent craft beer fans from traveling to other surrounding states like KY, IN and PA to seek out these higher gravity beers.  Let’s face it….they probably aren’t spending the gas money just to buy one or two beers above 12% and are most likely buying other beers on these hauls therefore increasing the loss of tax revenue for the state of Ohio.   Let’s keep it local!”

In 2012, 58 Ohio craft brewers produced an estimated 980,696 barrels of beer — fourth nationally and 7 percent of national production — bringing $1.2 billion to the state economy, said Mary Martineau, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association.

Aaron Spoores, Ohio  Sales Manager for  Cavalier Distributing says, “I think brewers are being held back..  If a beer happens to land over the 12% mark they either have to dump or be dishonest..neither of which they want to do.  There are already a few breweries producing beers over the limit but not a ton.  People will seek out what they want and what they want is being sold in all states surrounding us like IN, KY and PA, so they are driving and spending money in these states.

Spoores also shared, It still cost the brewers an enormous amount of money to produce a high abv beer.  Money that will be passed on to the consumer.  So it’s not likely that there will be a fleet of new high abv that is going to hit the shelves.  Bottom line I guess its like telling a painter they can’t use a certain color paint..does the artist always want to use that color?  No, but when the time is right and and they want to create something special..  That paint is there for them.”

If passed, sales of beer with an alcohol percentage between 12 and 21 would begin a year after the bill’s passage; brewing could begin immediately. Beer over 12 percent alcohol could not have caffeine or other stimulants in it.

Ohio House Bill 391 proposes to increase Ohio’s outdated 12% alcohol-by-volume (ABV) restriction on beer to 21%.   We think all craft beer fans in Ohio should support this bill  and it’s pretty easy to show your support in 3 quick and easy steps as outlined on  OhioCraftBeer.com.
